The World of Online Motorsport Games

Interview with Steve Hood Creative Director at Codemasters F1 2012

    DRIVER PROFILENeo_JACK96

Is the next TRL member to share his

    thought and experiences with us.

What do you enjoy most about racing

    online?

Being competitive, and aiming to beat

my friends on driving games. I also like

the interaction with other people from

    around the world.

What would you say is your greatest

    achievement so far?

My greatest achievement is either a B

main win in Catalunya 2012 or the 4th

in A main in Canada 2012. In Catalunya

i went pole by half a second and led

from the front. I was consistently very

quick whilst managing to keep my tyre

longer than others. A safety car came

out with 10 laps left but I again got the

hammer down and won by 7 seconds

What would you say is your favourite

    driving game?

I would say the F1 2011 game from

    Codemasters.

What motorsport are you interested in

    real life?

I'm interested in BTCC, NASCAR and F1

What would be your Dream job in

    Motorsport?

My dream motorsport job would be a

    commentator or driver

What Driving Game in the Future woul

you be looking forward to the most?

Definitely F1 2012, Im pretty sure its

going to be everything that it promises

    to be

I would like to start by saying a big thank you to Steve for taking the time to answera few questions for our Newsletter.

As of the start of July you have been able to demo the COTA track at E3 how far

now are you into completing the game.

I would say that we are now 75% complete, we are running tests on most of the

tracks now and come across about 40-50 bugs that we can quickly resolve at any

one time. This is not on top of getting the game ready for three different platforms,

    however we are on schedule.

Will there be a much wider range of set up variables in 2012?

Well this time around we have stepped closer to the real thing by you not being

able to change your set up between qualifying and the race as you are inevitably in

parc ferme. I can say the only thing you are able to change is tweeks to the front

wing and tyres if youre outside the top 10.

Some online racers use automatic gears because of pad and some use manual will

there be changes to make it easier to get the right gear going into a corner?

Yes, we looked at this and this time around you can override the auto gears by up

    or downshifting yourself.

Free practice is only available offline have you considered making this available

online as a lot of league racers would benefit from this rather than the 15 mins of

quail we get before a race?Yes we considered online practice from comments made before by you a while

back and this time Im pleased to say that this will be part of a larger featured set

at a later date for us to reveal. (Mums the word so to speak)

I know its been mentioned before but to confirm will there be a parade lap?

    No!

    Short and sweet I guess(laughing)

Yeah we thought about it and then decided it was 3 mins not needed in the

    game.

A lot of people I know are hoping that you will be able to introduce online replaysfor multiplayer. Is this going to be in for 2012?

Unfortunately I cant confirm or deny that at the moment!

In our League racing we found that certain cars were always quicker than others, is

    this now rectified for 2012?

We are working on it and I have paid particular attention to this as a lot of tweets

my way before were about the unequal equal cars.

Will there be New Helmet Designs in the Game

Yes we have changed and added a few more to the choices you can have.

Junes Month of Racing Online in TRL

Driving Game review of the Month

    Ridge Racer

    Unbounded

An old member of the family has

returned, or so we are led to

believe. Ridge Racer is nearly 20

years old. Starting in the arcades

then being one of the first driving

games for the PS One. So how

does it fair now in its latest form?

Well to start, dont assume it has

    remained true to its original

    concept. Unbounded is not that

game. Instead it's all tight, filthy

    streets under a constant twilight,

    muscular vehicles smashing into

walls and each other from every

    which way without particular

regard for safety. It's a down and

dirty street racer, so those of youwho are familiar with developer

    Bugbear's Flatout series will be

    more on the right track.

    Multiplayer is all about track

creation and for some this will be

why they want it. I found it tedious

and after a while very boring. Add

to that going into other peoples

    creations was difficult as they

would win 9/10 because they were

familiar with what they had made

always leaving you at adisadvantage. Many people left

    after 1 race.

    Score Breakdown

    7.2 / 10Multiplayer

    7.8 / 10Final Verdict

Single player feels more fun, if youlike your music Drum and Bass. Ifyou like huge explosions, Then buyit.

So Junes month of racing seems to have

been a bit on the sparse side. We had a lot

to compete with this month with England

making it into the quarter finals but not

going further at the end of the month. The

turnout for the GT5 races were of a similar

turnout to the F1 races of this month, both

seemed to be compromised by things that

drivers had to do elsewhere. All in all though

the racing was still of a high caliber without

the familiar moans and grumble of disputes

between drivers. Seems like everyone who

wants to race is racing and having fun.

Still as we enter the month of July and we

are in for 4 more races one of GT5 and three

from F1, might I take this as an opportunity

to encourage you all to start to think about

how we can increase the numbers wether

its individually for GT5 or F1 or people

who are willing to race in both series.

If TRLbLOG was to pick out the outstanding

race of the month I think it would have to be

Montreal F1 race when at lap 62 of 72 the

safety car came out made it anyones race

at the end as all finishers crossed the line

within 10 seconds taking out the penalties

incurred by Scotpags and Shizzle right at the

end next to the wall of champions
