Breaking Up or Making Up?

By Mary Ivie

As middle school students, I’m sure many of you have had or are in a relationship. Well, I will go ahead and tell you they don’t always work out, but that is nothing to worry about. I have advice for you!

If you have ever broken up with someone, or have been broken up with I would advise you not to take it hard. If you are involved in any activities, stay involved. Dropping out of activities will cause you to lose support. You can always count on friends from the groups you are involved in to help you out during a break up. Friends always seem to help and give good advice because they are usually the ones who know you best.

After a breakup, it’s not always good to move on so quickly. Try to take time before you move on to the next guy/girl. If you move on too quickly more than likely, people will start to say things about you that you don’t like too much in other words, it can ruin your reputation. Also if you move on too quickly that might jeopardize being friends with your ex.

Also after experiencing a break up, don’t put yourself down. Keep your head up. Something you could do is reminding yourself what’s good about you. Take a piece of paper and a pen-cil/pen and make a list of your strengths. This will make you feel

better.

I asked 8th grade student, Chandler Davis what she thought about this topic. Are you in a relationship or single right now? “Single” When you went through the last breakup with your boyfriend, were the feelings mu-tual (did you both want to break up)? “At the time yes” Did you take the breakup hard or did you live your life normally? “Hard” Do you regret that? “Yes.” Do you have advice for people experiencing a breakup? “Try to work it out first, and if it’s not working just end it.”

When you suffer heartbreak, and you are having a hard time, it’s not good to go through it alone. Go to a friend and ask for help. If they can’t help you, go to a teacher or counselor. Never be scared to ask for help, because in the long run it will help you out.

Sometimes relationships do work out, but never let a guy or girl take over your life. In many cases having a boy-friend/girlfriend gets in the way of friendships. It happens most often with girls. How many of you girls out there have gotten in a fight with some of your BESTFRIENDS over a silly little guy? I know I have! That is never a good thing to do because boyfriends come and go, but friendships are something you need for a lifetime.

I interviewed a 7th grade student who is in a relationship. Are you single or in a relationship right now? “In a relation-ship.” Are you happy in this relationship? “Yes.” Do you put your friends or boy-friend first? “Friends” Do you have any advice for people in a relationship? “Be yourself.”

I hope my article was beneficial to you. If you experience a break up just remem-ber be strong and don’t be scared to ask for help.

Label or a Promise?

By: Hannah Mosher

Is being best friends a label or a promise?

To some, it might just be a label others it’s more than that. Our best friends have experienced everything together. Some of us have had the same people we’ve hung out with since kindergar-

ten. Once we came to the middle school, you might have grown apart from your best friend. You might not have as many classes as you did last year with your best friend or you and you friend might have gotten into a fight and don’t

talk anymore. Either way, best friends don’t leave you; real friends will stay with you no matter what, no matter how stupid the fight you had with each other. People may come in and out of your life, but true friends leave footprints in your heart.

to be competitive when they play each instrument. She hopes they will play with a passion and want to con-tinue playing their instru-ments. The class will be per-forming December 14, 2010, during the BCMS Visual and Performing Arts Showcase.

In Advanced Music class, the students are being taught to play instruments that are played in orchestras and most students are not in the school band. They class is also learning to read music, and Ms. Powell hopes to have the entire class playing at level 2.

She also wants them

“The thing I like most about advanced music is getting to play my instru-ments,” said Advanced Mu-sic student Alex Sargent.

Where did Halloween come

from?

Halloween came from the

holiday, All Saints Day. It was

originally a religious celebra-

tion, but was changed slowly

though out time. Today we

celebrate it as a holiday where

we dress up and scare

people for candy.

Centuries ago, Hal-

loween wasn’t like it is today. It was believed

to be a day when the dead

came back to life for one day.

Families and friends would

gather from all over to cele-

brate their loved ones deaths

because back then dying was-

n’t a sad thing. It was happy because it was another way of

life. They would dress

in animal skins and

pelts for their cos-

tumes. If they weren’t

at home, they had a

jack o’ lantern to supposedly

protect their homes from evil

spirits. Today, we carve them

for fun instead of old beliefs.

Today, we dress up as goblins,

witches, and other monsters of

the night for the fun of getting

to be something that you are

not. Halloween is just another day full of fun, laughter, and

frights in the middle of the

night!

'reenact' Thanksgiving by dressing as either pil-grims or Indians and sharing a meal of some sort. All of this is wonderful for helping create a sense of family, national identity, and of course remem-bering to say thanks at least once a year. So re-member what Thanksgiving is about and Happy Thanksgiving.

What do the 8th and 7th graders have to say about their family’s Thanksgiving Day? I asked 7th grader Adam what he eats for Thanksgiving, he said, “turkey”. Then I asked what do you and your family do for fun on Thanksgiving and he said “he and his family goes hunting on Thanksgiving

Day for fun.”

Then I also asked an 8th grader Wendell where does his family celebrate Thanks-giving at he replied at his Grandpas house, then I asked what do you and your family do for fun on Thanksgiving he replied and his family plays pool for fun on Thanksgiving.

I also asked 8th grader Kimberly what does her and her family eat on Thanksgiving she said “Turkey, ham, mash potatoes, and dressing” Then I asked her what do you and your family do for fun on Thanksgiving, she replied, “After we eat we all get together and go to the Grand Ole Opera Hotel to see Christmas lights”

Happy Thanksgiving BY: Barbie Cowles

What is Thanksgiving? It was made an official holiday on the fourth Thursday in No-vember in 1941.Today, Thanksgiving is cele-brated the same as it was from 1541, a gathering of friends and family in celebration, regardless of the date. It requires the use of such traditional food as turkey and ham, squash, peas or green beans and carrots, mashed potatoes, cranberries, and apple sauce. Dessert tends to be pumpkin pie with ice cream, and drinks to be cider. It revolves around a warm atmosphere of friendliness and thankfulness.

Thanksgiving is seen as a time to get together with loved ones, eat a ridiculously large amount of food, watch some football, and of course give thanks for all the blessings in our lives.

Schoolchildren across America will

The last BCHS band competition was on Saturday, November 6, 2010. They competed at the Mid-states Band Associa-tion Championship in Dayton, Ohio. The marching championships feature bands from Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Michi-gan. In 2008, at this same competition, the BCHS band was named the AA Champi-ons. In 2009, they moved up the ladder to win the AAA and received 1st place overall. For the third year in a row, the BCHS band has successfully defended their title as the Grand Champion in class AAA, scoring a 93.3 (the highest score achieved by the BCHS band at any previous competition!)

But, this band didn’t become winners overnight; Mr. and Mrs. Crowder have put in a lot of time with their band students. I interviewed Leah Willis about what they do in band. “We practice three times a week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.” This practice, while very hard, paid off. As I told you before, the BCHS band is number one in the AAA division. I also asked Leah how many competitions they have had this year, since their last competition was on November 6th. “We

have had about 7-8 competitions this year. But that’s just a guess.” On every competi-tion, the BCHS band was very successful.

We are proud to have 11 students from the middle school who actually go and compete with the high school band. They are:

On October30th the Seventh grade football team played North Pulaski for the state championship! Coach Stephens, 7th grade coach said, “I haven’t slept because I have been watching film and pre-paring for the big event up ahead!” Stephens also stated, “I have lost over 26 pounds since the sea-son has started!” I asked Stephens if he ever prac-ticed with the players and he said, “I do. One time Gunnar Eaton and I hit heads so hard that I thought I was going to pass out.” The week before the big game he said they practiced every after-noon. He said they work hard and they are an excellent team! Stephens said that he thinks they have a good chance at winning the game, and if not, they will always be successful!

I also had the opportunity to interview some players! The players I interviewed were: Seth Groce, Tanner Long, Justin Stergeon, and also Grayson Hyatt. All the boys had the same thing to say. They are so excited, and they think they have a good chance at winning the game against North Pulaski. The school has been very supportive of the team and how much they have accomplished this season! We also wish good luck to all the cheerleaders. They will be competing in a state wide competition in spirit, cheer routine/sideline cheer.

For some students here at BCMS they have the love of golf. Spencer York 8th grade golfer stated,

“My goal is to be the best I can in golf.” Caleb Rich 8th grade golfer said, “I would love to go to the

PGA.”

BCMS golf team practices at

Barren County State Park. The golf coach is Robert Bauer. Golf started

on July 15th and ended at the end of September. Mr. Bauer stated, “We had a great year, but fell short of our

ultimate goal of reaching the state

tournament. However, we continued to build the youth in our program who have helped to lay a solid foun-

dation for several years to come.

The golf team’s record was

17-2. They won the Barren Co Invi-tational and the 15 District tourna-ments, 2nd Warren East Inv, 2nd Met-

calfe Inv, 4th Glasgow Inv and 4th in regional tournament. Even thought

golf has already end, they still prac-tice to get better for next year.

coach also said that they lost those two games, but it was still a great eye opener of what to expect in the coming weeks. “We were victorious

for 3 games in a row: Monroe County (6-1), Warren East (2-1), and Glasgow (4-1).” Coach Nyekan stated, “We are a family looking out for

one another.”

BCMS students are on the soccer team and take it very seriously. Jake Dillon stated, “My goal is winning the re-

cord.” Dylan Mitchell stated, “My goal is to make the high school team.” Next season’s starting time is in the month of July and the ending is

around October. The boy’s soccer coach here at BCMS is Coach Bobbie Nyekan. The girl’s soccer coach is Coach
