From white sand beaches to lush rainforests and rhythm-filled metropolises, Brazil is a country that has a rich history and varied culture. It is also a country with a long medical history. Brazil’s research into tropical diseases accelerated at the start of the twentieth century, with many seeing the fight against tropical diseases as Brazil’s pathway to moving forward into the modern era.

This tour, led by Dr Eduardo Massad, a Brazilian doctor and Honorary Professor of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It examines Brazil’s long involvement with tropical medicine, how traditional medicine is still an important for some communities and how modern research is making its mark. Starting in São Paulo, explore the vibrant metropolis to see the Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina at the University of São Paulo and the Butantan Institute. Travel north to the Bahian capital of Salvador and see how outpatient clinics are dealing with the recent Zika virus outbreak. Head to Manaus, the gateway to the Amazon, where you will explore the jungle and visit a local tropical medicine hospital. The tour ends in the colourful city of Rio de Janeiro, where you will visit the Fiocruz Institute – the birthplace of tropical medicine research in Brazil.

Arrive in São Paulo and spend your first evening at leisure. The following day set out to explore the world’s third largest city. This vast metropolis is also a city rich in art and culture and has a burgeoning reputation as a world-class gastronomic city. Starting at the municipal market, join the local Paulistanos as they shop for the many tropical delicacies that this country has to offer, with opportunities for

Explore the city’s bohemian neighbourhood, Vila Madalena, and stop for a coffee tasting to learn about this famous Brazilian export. Later in the afternoon explore Ibirapuera Park and take in the city views from the Contemporary Art Museum. In the evening enjoy a welcome dinner with the group.

The following day is devoted to professional visits. In the morning visit the Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina at the University of São Paulo, the largest hospital in Latin America with 3000 beds. After lunch continue to the Instituto Butantan, one of the major scientific centres of the world. Visit its museum of poisonous animals, watch snake milking, see the arthropods lab and visit the vaccine plant. Partners will visit the MASP

Transfer to the airport the next morning for the flight north to Salvador, the capital of the Bahia State and former capital of Portugal’s great New World colony. Check into your hotel, located in the heart of the old town, and take a short walking tour of the area to get your bearings. Dinner will be at the hotel restaurant, which is run by the prestigious Brazilian chef, Terez Paim.

Start the following day with a visit to the Instituto de Medicina Social and a paediatric outpatient unit to see how Brazil is handling the recent Zika virus outbreak and how it has affected families in the area. Visit a traditional Candomble temple and see how they still use traditional and holistic medicine. Partners will spend the morning exploring the lower districts of Salvador, including residential areas, Bonfirm Church and the local markets, for a real sense of the everyday life of this vibrant city and its people. The afternoon is at leisure for the partners to visit the city’s many museums, take a walk along the seafront or relax at the hotel.

buildings of Pelourinho and visit the Afro Brazilian Museum, which is housed in the first medical school at Terreiro de Jesus. Enjoy a traditional Bahian lunch before visiting a local social project that offers art programmes for vulnerable youth. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.

Next day is reserved for you to take part in the lodge’s activities, including jungle walks, visiting local communities up river or canoe excursions. Partners will take a guided tour of the city, including the grand Manaus Opera House and the famous banana market that includes fresh items brought in from communities along the river. After lunch return to the lodge for time at leisure.

The next day leave the Amazon and fly to Rio de Janeiro, a city of golden beaches, lush mountains and samba-filled streets. Arrive in the evening and transfer to the hotel, which is near Copacabana and Leme Beaches.

Rio de Janeiro is effortlessly spectacular. Spend your first morning in the city taking in its breath-taking views, starting with a train ride to Corcovado Mountain, where the statue of Christ

the Redeemer towers over the city. After lunch take the cable car to Morro da Urca, the first stage en route to Sugarloaf Mountain, to take a pleasant walk to the second stage with a superb panorama of Guanabara Bay, Copacabana and the surrounding area.

The next morning visit the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, founded in 1900. Its original objective was to produce vaccines against the plague, but over the decades its activities expanded to include research and experimental medicine. Learn how tropical medicine practice and research has evolved over the last century.
