Brevard Zoo to host 'Dino-mite Sensory Night'BREVARD COUNTY – For families

with sensory sensitivities, finding a place to share and enjoy common outdoors experiences can be a difficult task.

So Brevard Zoo and KultureCity have come together to offer a ‘Dino-mite Sen-sory Night’ for children and their families to enjoy.

The zoo will host the event from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 23, at 8225 N Wick-ham Road, Melbourne.

“We’re making the whole zoo really very accessible and sensory-sensitive for everybody,” said Lindsey Mathisen, spe-cial needs coordinator for Brevard Zoo. “We’ve partnered with KultureCity, and

they are part of the Sensory Initiative, so we have jumped on board. What they do is send out individuals to train everybody in what sensory-sensitive issues are and how to handle and deal with them, so we train our staff.

“I’m actually a behavioral analyist, so I’ll go and do ongoing trainings [as the demand for sensory-sensitive guests requires],” Ms. Mathisen added.

According to officials, “The Zoo will provide a low-stimulus evening for those families by providing a fun and a ‘dino’-mite experience for the whole family."

“This event offers individuals with sen-sory needs an exclusive time at the Zoo with a low-sensory environment that oth-erwise may not be possible during regular operational hours,” Ms. Mathisen stated

in a recent press release. “During this time, we will have limited participation in order to minimize crowds. Sounds and movement will be reduced on the Dino Trail to reduce overstimulation and ven-dors from the community will provide an activity to engage families throughout the evening. The Zoo will provide an experi-ence for families who may need a few accommodations to fully engage in this unique opportunity.”

The Dino-mite Sensory Night experi-ence offers Quiet Zones, as well as a safe environment for families with sensory sensitivities.

Sensory-sensitivity areas and Quiet Zones will be scattered throughout the zoo, and even those without sensory needs can enjoy the areas.

“We also have scheduled free-play days in an area set aside that we encourage families to come and play in,” Meg Lieth said. “Families can come and have that one-on-one experience with one another in a natural habitat. It’s safe because the kids can actually run around without their parents having to be on top of them.

“It’s just trying to get families to be out-side rather than inside, and really creating moments together,” she added. “We know that a lot of growth academically as well as socially occurs outside, so we’re really pushing for families to come back outside and play.”

For more information, call (321) 254-9453, ext. 229.

I wouldn't teach in Brevardwithout military protection

I want to wish all the best to all the teachers in Brevard County.

You could pay me $1 million a day, and I would not be enticed to walk into a public school in Brevard. You could pay me $1 trillion, I would not walk into a public school unless I had a full platoon of Marine bodyguards, or the 101st Air-borne as my human shield.

Call me a coward, that is fine by me.Have a nice day in the Gunshine state. I

mean the Sunshine State.

Pedestrians, bicyclists need to take safety measures at night

Is it dark outside? Well then you need either a flashlight or

some kind of reflective clothing, Vehicles CANNOT see you. Whether you are walking, biking, etc. If

your one of the above, take responsible measures to ensure your safety and don't always think we see you, because most of the time, we don't.

There are several ways to help those in crisis

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is attempt-ed 1.1 million times annually. Unfortu-nately, every 12.3 minutes a person com-pletes suicide, totaling 117 lives per day, nearly 43,000 lives per year, making sui-cide the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. And, for ages 15-24, suicide is the third leading cause of death.

The aforementioned statistics are often

perceived as merely numerical represen-tations, but they have a deeper signifi-cance. These numbers represent a collec-tion of loved ones gone too soon.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reported 90 percent of those who completed suicide had a diagnosable psychiatric disorder. In essence, many battled with emotional and psychological problems.

Statistics are screaming for PROAC-TIVE measures.

There are ways to help those who are in crisis and may struggle with suicidal ide-ation. Do the math. Do not let these num-bers go unnoticed. Be the one to help save a life.

Start the Conversation by being there for someone in crisis! STOP. ASK. LIS-TEN. ACT.

Fixing sewer sustemshould be top priority

Just reading about all the money put into resanding our beaches and how it disappears so fast. Another way of throw-ing money into a useless cause.

My rants also are about money spent on projects not as necessary as trying to get our sewer systems up and running so our rivers and ponds are not destroyed beyond help.

Who approved the two high-rise con-dos across from Publix knowing about our desperate sewer problems?

In the past few months, three projects have taken place that were really not top

priority. Makes me think maybe only to provide jobs and keep workers busy.

1. More than 100 palm trees planted along the Pineda Causeway and exits.

2. Turn barriers dug in the middle of State Road A1A from Pineda to Mel-bourne Beach. It's very dangerous and difficult to see at night. There is no room for emergency vehicles to maneuver safely and the weeds have to be maintained.

3. Putting in new sidewalks along West side of South Patrick Drive, then digging them up, install some pipes (sewage?) then rebuilding the sidewalks again.

There are lots of poor planning going on in our county. who is responsible? Sewerage should be our top concern. Wake up voters.

Time change turmoil no problem for local tire company

I just want to give a big thank you to the staff at Tire Kingdom on 1500 Wickham-Road in Melbourne.

They are very nice, professional and really care about people and their vehi-cles.

With the daylight savings time change, their computers triple booked online appointments on Sunday.

Even with the extra work and confu-

sion, the staff and mechanics rose to the challenge and kept their cool.

They were patient, kind and under-standing about my vehicle situation and worked with me to take care of my vehi-cle's needs.

I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for caring, understanding, reliable and dedicated mechanics and staff.

They know what they are doing and take care of their customers.

Residents need to stop dumping litter everywhere

I am utterly disgusted with the amount of trash and dumping throughout our city (including residential and canal areas).

From people walking, driving, land-scapers and assorted other trucks and passers by people are just throwing their trash wherever they feel like it. It is very disappointing and disrespectful to say the very least.

My husband and I pick up trash in our neighborhood only to see more the next day.

Come on, people — where is your pride? Stop the littering. Take your trash with you and dispose of it properly.

Big trucks, bigger dreams

Every year around tax time, reports of email phishing scams increase.

Phishing is the act of using com-puters to fraudulently acquire sensitive information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and user names & passwords. To accomplish this, thieves will send electronic communications designed to look like they are coming from a trustworthy entity.

Here are a few examples of phishing scams:

IRS or Treasury Department tax scams. These e-mail scams will typically warn you of a problem with an individual’s tax return, which can only be resolved after confidential information has been sent to the scammers. These scams may also be threatening and use scare tactics such as the threat of criminal prosecution if the information is not sent. Such scams may

also include virus attachments within the e-mail.

Fast food entity voucher scam. Some fast food entities have announced that fake e-mails, which ask you to respond to a survey in exchange for a gift voucher, are being sent. The survey scam asks you for confidential personal information, which is then used for identity theft.

Disaster relief phishing scams. These scams exploit the terrible tragedy a geo-graphic region where a disaster has occurred. E-mails claiming to be from

humanitarian relief organizations ask you to respond with confidential information in order to complete a charity donation. Other related e-mails have also been known to contain viruses or hyperlinks to viral websites.

Listed below are a few recommenda-tions you can follow to help protect your-self from phishing scams both at work and at home:

Never reply to a phishing e-mail. Delete any suspected spam or phish

from your mailbox.Remember, legitimate organizations

and government agencies will never ask you to provide confidential information via e-mail.

Do not open e-mails from unknown senders. Do not click on attachments or hyperlinks within e-mail from unknown senders.

Be wary of e-mail promising gifts or money in exchange for participating in surveys or by providing confidential information.

Investigate all charities or donation requests thoroughly before sending any money.

You can participate in helping to stop these kinds of scams by sharing this infor-mation with your family, friends, and co-workers.

Titusville asks Congress to support national parks

BREVARD COUNTY – Between the St. Johns River and the Indian River Lagoon, the Mid-Reach down the shoreline and Barrier Island, Brevard County has many environmental trea-sures.

Recently, the Titusville City Council passed a resolution that asked Congress to support local and statewide national parks.

“The resolution calls on members of Congress to dedicate a reliable and pre-dictable stream of resources to help the National Park Service (NPS) address deferred maintenance at its more than 400 sites across the country,” officials stated in a press release. “It is estimated that the current backlog of overdue park repairs — including crumbling roads, rotting historic buildings, eroding trails, outdated public buildings, and safety hazards such as deteriorating water and electrical systems — totals $11.3 bil-lion.” After a thorough explanation of the benefits of supporting these parks, the

resolution asks Congress for its support.“Now, therefore, be it resolved,” the

resolution reads, “that the City of Titus-ville City Council strongly encourages Congress to create a reliable, predict-able stream of resources to address deferred maintenance needs in Ameri-ca’s National Park System.”

Titusville Mayor Walt Johnson said civic leaders fought in the 1960s and 1970s to preserve “the pristine coast-line” that is now Canaveral National Seashore.

“A half-century later, we are every bit as committed to its continued preserva-tion. Congress must find a way to fund deferred maintenance projects in our national parks,” Johnson stated. “For Titusville, this funding is essential to protecting priceless cultural artifacts and a diversity of plants and animals found in few other places in the world.”

Church offers ‘Blessing of the Bikes’ after Bike Week

BREVARD COUNTY — Bike Week in Daytona Beach is an exciting time of year when tens of thousands of bikers gather, and it can be fun to spot the different kinds of motorcycles people are riding around these days.

Some bikers will pass through or end their journey in Brevard County after the festivities are over, which will give them a chance to catch Pastor David Jahn’s “Blessing of the Bikes” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 17, at Advent Lutheran Church, 7550 N. Wickham Road, Suntree. The church is between Interstate 95 and U.S. 1.

The blessing itself should only take a few minutes as bikers ride through the church parking lot to a road in front of the church, where they will be greeted by Rev. Jahn or one of his colleagues.

“They will be asked if they have any-thing for which they would like prayer [and] the minister involved will then pray

for God’s blessing on the bikes and those who ride them,” Rev. Jahn said. “They will then receive a small token gift to remind them of the presence of God with them always.”

As a motorcycle enthusiast himself, Rev. Jahn has attended Bike Week in past occasions and currently enjoys rebuilding his old bikes. He has been riding motor-cycles since 1981 and can be seen around town with his Honda NC700X.

“I enjoy seeing the amazing artistic work people have done on their bikes as well as just enjoying the fun, carefree cul-ture that gathers around motorcycling,” Rev. Jahn said.

“As a motorcycle enthusiast, I most enjoy the total immersion of the experi-ence of riding,” he continued. “All of my senses are involved all the time. I really take in the whole journey when I ride. For those who have never done it, I ask them to imagine riding securely sitting on the top of their car as they go along a scenic route. The wind, the aromas, the

Alex Schierholtz/staff photographerRockledge Gardens’ Farmers Market recently was named one of '3 of the Best Farmer’s Markets' in Florida in AAA Living magazine.

Farmers market named one of Florida's best

BREVARD COUNTY — In a recent edition of AAA Living magazine, Rock-ledge Gardens’ Farmers Market was named one of “3 of the Best Farmers Mar-kets” in Florida.

Rockledge Gardens’ Farmers Market is run by co-owners Kevin and Theresa Riley.

“My father and mother started the busi-ness over 60 years ago,” Mrs. Riley said of Rockledge Gardens at 2153 U.S.1, Rock-ledge. “Kevin and I have been a part of the business for 40 years. We met in high school and I got him a job here picking weeds.”

At the Farmers Market, guests can pur-chase items such as jams and jellies, cheese, bread, pasta, fresh eggs, as well as handcrafted items. Tools and gardening supplies are available in the Garden Cen-ter.

What really makes the Farmers Market stand out among its competition are its unique vendors.

“A big benefit of our market is the ven-

dors who join us,” Mrs. Riley said. “They all have a permanent display table which allows them to show their product during the week, not just on market days. There is a wonderful sense of community with our vendors and our customers.

“The fact that it is at the garden center allows customers the chance to get their garden supplies and plants when they visit the market,” Mrs. Riley added. “They can also get excited about growing their own vegetables and fruit and home.”

The market is in its sixth year, having started at the Riley’s home farm. The mar-ket was moved to a shaded facility in Rockledge Gardens 18 months ago.

“It came as a total and wonderful sur-prise to us,” Mrs. Riley said. “We feel that there are many markets deserving of this honor. It means a great deal to us.”

The Farmers Market is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. On the second Saturday of each month, the market also offers Farm and Friends, where additional vendors are available.

Relay for Life to feature a Mardi Gras theme

BREVARD COUNTY — Attendees at an upcoming Relay For Life event will have the opportunity to catch some bead necklaces and enjoy a variety of fami-ly-friendly activities, all while honoring those who have been affected by cancer and helping to raise money for the Ameri-can Cancer Society.

Relay For Life of North Central Bre-vard, a Mardi Gras-themed gathering, will be first of four Relay for Life events set to take place in Brevard between now and May.

The event will be from 2 to 11 p.m. Sat-urday, March 24, at Sand Point Park, 101 N. Washington Ave.

The day will include live music, a kid zone, a lip-sync battle and a flash mob, along with two signature features of Relay for Life events: the relay itself and a lumi-naria ceremony.

The ceremony involves lighting lantern bags as a way to honor cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle with the disease.

“Sand Point Park provides a beautiful space for our evening Luminaria Ceremo-ny,” said Andrea Boudin, community development manager for the American

Cancer Society’s Southeast region. “We encourage the community to come and join us as we honor those we have lost.”

The relay will begin at 2 p.m. The kid zone with inflatables will also open at 2 p.m. and will remain open until dusk.

The event’s opening ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. and a dinner for survivors and caregivers will be at 5 p.m.

A parade of teams will additionally be at about 5 p.m. followed by a lip-sync bat-tle, which will be open to anyone who would like to participate.

The band My Remedy is scheduled to play from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and 8 to 9 p.m.

The last activities on the agenda, the luminaria ceremony and the closing cere-mony, will take place at 9:45 and 10:30 p.m., respectively.

Participants can RSVP to attend the dinner or register to take part in the relay at the event, or ahead of time by calling (321) 253-2944 or online at www.relayfor-life.org/northcentralfl.

Christian music festival returns for day of funBREVARD COUNTY — Slides, bounce

houses, Christian music and food will make for an exciting weekend of fellow-ship without being preachy at Cocoa Vil-lage.

Residents and visitors are invited by Club Zion Community Church to attend a safe, family-friendly day at the park as part of its 12th annual Spring Praise Fest, also known as the Contemporary Chris-tian Music Festival.

The free non-denominational Christian music festival will take place all day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Riverfront Park Amphitheater in Cocoa Village, 401 Riveredge Blvd.

Spring Praise Fest is a “free Christian music festival in a relaxing, picturesque, family-friendly, alcohol-free, safe envi-ronment,” according to its website.

The event was started by Chris Herrn-kind, Mike Reed and Norm Channell as a way to give back to the community a day of fun and positive energy.

Riverside Presbyterian Church in

Cocoa Beach hosted the event for nine years before passing the torch to Club Zion Community Church. The event is made up of volunteers who give their time and effort to put on a family-friendly event each year.

“We could not do this event without Greg and Lisa Geiger,” said Lorena Dugan, media and vendor relations for Spring Praise Fest. “They donate the sound equipment and we couldn’t do it without [Greg’s] coordination of the talent. He

goes after bands he know are good.“For the leadership team, it’s a gift to

the community,” she continued. “We’re happy to donate our time and expertise in order to have a day where you can just go and sit back and listen to music. That’s how all of us got involved. We went to one and enjoyed it.”

The band lineup will include local tal-ent such as Three of the Thirty, 11th Hour Culture, Club Zion Worship Band, KD3 and ECCC [East Coast Christian Center] Metal Church Worship Band.

In between bands, an emcee will enter-tain the crowd with games, and food trucks will be around to provide a variety of flavor. Guests can bring blankets and lawn chairs.

Club Zion Community Church will be accepting items such as clothing, non-per-ishable food items, and bathroom prod-ucts like shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, deodorant and toiletries. These items will be donated to House of Hope on Mer-ritt Island.

looking forward to it.”In previous years, Mr. McDonald has

performed on St. Patrick’s Day in Pitts-burgh, Boston and Buffalo.

John McDonald & the Irishmen will play Irish traditional music from U2, the Wolfe Tones, the Irish Rovers and the Clancy Brothers.

Mr. McDonald will be joined by local drummer Kevin Kornicki and out-of-town musicians Dale Cinski from Pitts-burgh and Rob Theodore from New York City.

The band regularly plays Tropical Rock from the inspiration of Jimmy Buf-fett, Bob Marley, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Sting, as well as original music.

After visiting Florida for several years, Mr. McDonald finally made the move to settle down in the Space Coast. He grew up in Boston, listening to different genres of music from his family mem-bers.

“My mom, dad and brother each had different tastes, so they each liked different kind of pop music,” Mr. McDonald said. “From my brother, I heard the Beatles and rock, but my mother had most of the Irish records. So, I listened to everything and anything as a child.”

Throughout the years, different musi-cal influences shaped Mr. McDonald’s interest in music. He added that when Paul Simon released his album “Graceland” in 1986 and used South African musicians, it added a kind of world dimension that captured his attention.

John McDonald & the Irishmen are set to perform from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., 1:30 to 3 p.m. and 4:15 to 5 p.m. at Meg O’Malley’s.

call outfits,” Mr. Nelson said.He added that concertgoers are welcome

to move their feet to the music that moves them throughout the evening.

In honor of American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birth-day, the Melbourne Community Orchestra will be playing selections from his award-winning musical “West Side Story.”

“When you think of American music classics, one cannot deny the influence of one of our greatest composers, Leonard Bernstein,” Mr. Nelson said.

“His landmark musical ‘West Side Story’ magnified the ‘melting pot’ reputation that

has made America great.”The 50-plus member orchestra is made

up of volunteer musicians who perform sev-eral free concerts each season. The group often plays a variety of music from sym-phonic to pop and show tunes to opera.

Mr. Nelson has been a conductor for orchestra ensembles throughout the U.S. in the past 40 years.

He co-founded the Community Band of Brevard and had a hand in creating the American Music Theatre Program for Bre-vard Public Schools.

Mr. Nelson is currently writing his doc-toral dissertation through Boston Universi-ty.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Dhuit! That is, in the Irish language, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! (It’s pronounced, “LAW AY-luh PAW-dray-g SON-a gwitch”).

St. Patrick’s Day, on Saturday, March 17, is almost upon us, and most of the local businesses are preparing with shamrocks and banners of green to celebrate.

How many people, however, ask them-selves what St. Patrick’s Day actually cele-brates?

For some, it may be a day of merriment and fun, where you might pinch your friends for not wearing green and have a pint of green beer. For others, it’s a day of celebrating being Irish or having Irish heritage, when you can cook up a cabbage stew and wash it down with a Guinness, and perhaps even sing a traditional Irish tune.

The real question is not what St. Pat-rick’s Day is, but who was St. Patrick? For that we must go all the way back to 5th century Ireland.

Generally speaking, St. Patrick was a man (possibly a Welshman, in fact) that spent his life converting the Irish to Chris-tianity and therefore became a saint— but there’s more to the story than simply con-version.

St. Patrick himself tells us his story in an autobiographical text, ‘Confessio,’ or, “I Confess.” Here, St. Patrick humbly begins to describe his life with the words, “I, Pat-rick, am a sinner, a most rustic person, and the least of all believers . . .”

According to St. Patrick, he was stolen by Irish pirates as a boy and sold into slav-ery to a farmer, where he tended sheep and pigs somewhere in the northern reaches of Ireland.

Although Patrick wasn’t entirely a pious boy, he began to pray to God until he grew in his faith to such an extent that God came to Patrick in a vision. Here, God showed Patrick ships that were waiting for him across Ireland, and Patrick escaped his bondage.

After having reunited with his parents, Patrick was once more visited by God in a vision and called on to go and minister to the people of Ireland.

In Ireland, Patrick earned great success and renown, converting many of the native Irish people.

In one instance, found in the Book of Lismore, St. Patrick was converting a local pagan king, Oengus. As St. Patrick was blessing Oengus’ head, he accidentally stabbed his staff right through the foot of the king, who remained silent. After the blessing, St. Patrick saw Oengus’ foot and

asked why Oengus hadn’t told him. “It seemed to me,” Oengus said, “that it was a rite of the faith.”

What makes St. Patrick important isn’t simply his conversion of the people of Ire-land, but the radical change that Ireland underwent as a result of that conversion.

With the coming of Christianity came the advent of writing to the Irish, who previously had been an exclusively oral society. The Irish immediately and natu-rally took to writing, produced great works, and even invented their own sys-tem of writing, called ogham.

Through Christianity’s systems of social class and the promotion of education, Ire-land became a center for Medieval "higher education," in what were essentially the world’s first colleges.

St. Patrick’s conversion of Ireland even-tually led to the preservation of education and many, many important documents throughout the Dark Ages.

Not only was education available, but it was also open for all classes of society.

This preservation of education, espe-cially in a time of violence and often harsh conditions, is as Thomas Cahill so popu-larly puts it in the title of his book, “How the Irish Saved Civilization.”

The conversion of Ireland allowed edu-cation to foster and grow, while much of

the rest of the known world was tor-mented by plague, war, and the ravages of ignorance.

Today, St. Patrick is honored for his life’s work on St. Patrick’s Day, which has since added a new twist to the old story.

Today, we not only remember St. Pat-rick, but we also celebrate the Irish culture that came from St. Patrick’s efforts, such as the plethora of Irish writers, scholars, artists and thinkers. St. Patrick’s Day is also a celebration of being Irish, whether by heritage or proxy alone, for as the say-ing goes, “everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day.”

If you’re looking for a good place to celebrate on Saturday, Nolan’s Irish Pub is hosting an all-day party with food, music,

dancers, and the Brevard Police and Fire Pipes & Drums, at 204 W. Cocoa Beach Causeway, Cocoa Beach.

In Melbourne, Meg O’Malley’s Restau-rant and Irish Pub is hosting a Breakfast Bunch, music, dancers, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians St. Patrick Day Parade, all at 812 E. New Haven Ave.

So, as we look back on St. Patrick this March 17, be sure to raise a cheer and a glass, and enjoy all of the Irish festivities. Do take a moment, however, to keep in mind the man that did so much for Ire-land, her people, and our society— because without St. Patrick, the world may have remained a very dark place indeed.
