Thanks to an established tradition of Easter racing in South Australia, there’s nothing like a day at the races during Autumn. The Oakbank Easter Carnival and the Clare Races are local favourites and in this issue you’ll discover what’s new at each in 2011.

ackyard barbecues and beach gatherings were alive and kicking around the country

this Summer, but following the devastating floods that ravaged Queensland and parts of Victoria in January, it was the goodwill of millions of Australians during those tough first weeks that truly reflected our patriotism.

People reached into their pockets while others got out to lend a hand - and the racing industry was no exception.

The South Australian Jockey Club led the way, waiving admission fees at Allan Scott Park, Morphettville Racecourse

on Saturday, 29 January and instead asked racegoers to donate upon entry. Earnings from a prize raffle at the event were given to the cause as well, helping to amass a $17,193 contribution from the Club.

And they weren’t alone. Across the State, thoroughbred racing pulled together in support of flood victims, with an eventual goal of raising more than $75,000 this year.

The Murray Bridge Racing Club pitched in, rallying the bikini-clad crowds to dig deep at the annual Murray Bridge Australia Day Beach Party races on our favourite public holiday. They raised their margarita glasses and over $2000

to the flood appeal through gate donations and collection tins.

The good people of the South East generously got behind the Penola Racing Club to generate more than $10,500 through entry donations and auctions at the Coonawarra Vignerons’ Cup. With torrential rain bringing the day to an early close, racegoers got a small taste of the devastation our compatriots face, and dug deep to help out.

the Betfair Strathalbyn Cup on January 16, with more than 4000 fashion fiends and racing fans heading to the Fleurieu Peninsula town for the event.

Labelled the most glamorous provincial race meet in the State, the day featured a fashion parade by iconic local designers George Gross and Harry Who, hosted by Glam Adelaide’s Kelly Noble.

livia Nunn is the princess of local racing tracks. She’s stylish and

sophisticated with a flair for fashion and a natural eye for picking a winning horse.

And despite attending no less than 20 race meetings every year - she never tires of all that’s unique about a day at the races.

“What’s not to love about the races?”

“It’s a great day out with friends or family, an opportunity to dress up and win in Fashions on the Field, a chance to taste some great local wines and produce and see real horsepower in action.”

“But above all I probably do love the excuse to dress up and wear a hat or fascinator.”

With three major Fashions on the Field titles to her name and a handful of judging opportunities awaiting her, Olivia’s fashion sense has certainly made a mark trackside.

In fact, her recent win on Adelaide Cup day 2009 led her to represent South Australia in the National Melbourne Cup Myer Fashions on the Field later that year – a highlight of her racing experiences to date.

“Going to represent SA in the Myer Melbourne Fashions on the Field competition was spectacular,” she says.

“I appeared on Sunrise the morning of the Cup, met Olivia Newton John at the Melbourne Cup Parade and won a nine-day package to enjoy all the spring racing action in the celebrity-filled Birdcage – it was quite the experience.”

Of course – being a star of Fashions on the Field does come at a cost, but as her own stylist Olivia’s got it worked out to a tee.

“I’ve never had my outfits styled or been dressed by a designer, I’ve always self styled and pulled my outfits together by myself – it’s part of the fun,” she says.

“I do wear elements of my outfits again and work with accessories to make outfits look different each time.

“Coordinating shoes, handbags and hats but keeping it simple is key and above all – it’s about the headwear, a hat or fascinator is a must.”

It certainly is.

Olivia has a hat collection that puts racing royalty to shame – and it continues to grow.

“I have mostly bespoke pieces made by my Milliner Amanda Mercer of Adelaide Hatters,” she says.

“I started creating a new piece each year to match my outfit for Adelaide Cup and then started adding to this for Spring Carnival and Melbourne Cup events.

o “I love the creative stylish aspect of pulling an outfit together and would love to undertake a millinery course – but for now I’ll leave that in the capable hands of my milliner!”

But there’s more to Olivia than meets the eye. While she certainly enjoys what happens off the track – she is also just as interested in what’s happening on it, an interest that was ingrained from a young age.

Catch Olivia trackside and while she’ll most certainly have a champagne in one hand, she’ll probably have a racebook in the other and she may even be cheering on one of her own horses.

“Until the age of 10 I lived with my family on a cattle station, Anna Creek in the far north of South Australia where we had horses as pets rather than dogs or cats, so I’ve been going to racing events of varying kinds progressing from dirt to grass tracks all my life,” Olivia said.

“We bought our first racehorse, Miss Akatone, in 2003 and since then we’ve added to the brood with three foals bred from Miss Akatone one sired by Street Cry – also the sire of 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking.

“And while we haven’t had any big wins yet – we certainly live in hope and it adds to our experience of the races.”

With the racing season in full swing and some of the big festive events on their way, Olivia is looking forward to nothing more than experiencing a little bit more of what South Australian racing has to offer.

“I’m really looking forward to attending more local meetings this year – I couldn’t think of a better way to spend Easter with family and friends than at Oakbank or Clare,” Olivia says.

“Port Lincoln is also on the cards this year and I’m especially excited about getting dressed up again for the Adelaide Cup.”

e know it as a fisherman’s gold mine and a holiday hot spot, but Port

Lincoln is also home to one of the State’s best provincial race meetings.

On Wednesday March 2 and Friday March 4, thousands of spectators will be suiting up and stepping out for the 2011 Carlton United Port Lincoln Cup Carnival - a celebration of all that is great about this buzzing port city.

Whether you’re a racing fan, a tourist or a fashion victim, the Port Lincoln Racing Club has partnered with businesses around town to bring you four days of entertainment and an occasion to suit all tastes.

Festivities will kick off on the Tuesday night (March 1) as visitors from around Australia converge on the Navigators Motel for an evening of wining and dining, followed the next day by the first of two exciting race days.

Cup day on Friday is the week’s main attraction, drawing upwards of 3,000 people on average. And we advise getting there early because for a gold coin donation the Club is turning on a hot barbecue breakfast trackside – the perfect way to line the stomach, secure a top picnic spot and support the rebuild effort in Queensland, with proceeds going to the Flood Appeal.

Punters can expect a top field of horses and an impressive prize

pool totalling $200,000, including the $40,000 Port Lincoln Cup and the $20,000 Challenge Sprint.

And in what is becoming a Port Lincoln Cup tradition, the Carlton Clydesdales will parade between races for the third year running – a highlight with the kids. Those who prefer the social side of racing are sure to enjoy one of the Club’s marquees, all serving fresh local seafood and great South Aussie wine to complement.

A friend of mine was talking about chestnuts, bays and greys. Can you help me with the official colours of horses?

Thoroughbred horses are categorised by the following colours: Bay (the most common), Chestnut, Brown and Grey (least common). Sometimes horses can have traits of two colours and will be therefore classified accordingly (ie. Bay/Brown).

Do horses still need to be ‘broken in’ before they start racing?

Yes. Horses are broken in at roughly 18 months of age. This process takes about a month and teaches them to accept a saddle and a rider on their back. It is a critical part of a horse’s education.

When breeding horses, what percentage is done by insemination versus ‘mother nature’?

With thoroughbreds, there is no AI (Artificial Insemination) allowed. The theory against AI is that if allowed, a lot of breeders would want to use the same types of bloodlines. This in time will shrink the gene pool. Therefore, we breed horses the ‘old fashioned’ way! During the breeding season (September to December) a stallion can cover up to 4 mares a day (one every 6 hours).

How many foals can a mare have?

A good performing, sound breeding mare can breed horses into her early twenties. If a mare

starts as a 5 year-old and only has a couple of ‘rest’ seasons, she can theoretically have 14 or 15 foals. Generally speaking, the majority of mares would have between 8-10 foals.

1. No evening or cocktail wear! Chiffon at the races does not work, trust us. Choose a well-cut dress or smart suit but no floaty evening wear please!

2. Wear a hat. What other chance do women have to wear hats and dress-up? Go and find yourself a great style that suits you and your taste and please stay away from fascinators!

3. Make sure you have comfortable shoes. This does not mean they have to be low-heeled or not fashionable, just something you can spend the day in and still look great at the end of it. If they are new heels, wear them every day the week before so on race day you will be perfectly comfortable.

4. Behave yourself. Have fun, enjoy the party but remember that at the end of a day, drinking too much can be very tacky. Avoid that and learn to fall-over gracefully if you must.

5. Come and visit our stores and stockists. Our staff know all there is to know and can point you in the right direction for every aspect of your outfit. Not only will you look fabulous come race day but it will be easy and stress free - the perfect way to start your day.
