Choosing a trucking company to drive for

requires more than just a pen and paper. Some con-sideration to the “unseen” is also necessary.

I’m a fairly avid fan of Dragon’s Den. Nearly ev-ery dragon has written at least one book, and I’ve read them all, except I’m not quite finished Herja-vec’s second book “The Will to Win” and I haven’t picked up David Chilton’s updated “Wealthy Bar-ber” yet (though I’ve read the original). Other than that I recommend them all for reading.

I’d like to make one special note about Brett Wilson’s book “Redefin-ing Success” (he was a prior three season pan-elist). Brett focused a significant portion of his book on the concept of charity. He presented charity as a lifestyle not

just as an event, means of self-promotion or a simple tax write off. Charity as a lifestyle is a character issue not a business decision.

Choosing a business associate requires careful scrutiny of character not just “business smarts”. Charity requires commit-ment to principles that at times conflict with bottom line profits or “business smarts”. Embracing solid life principles develops trust in all relationships. If people see that an indi-vidual adheres to values other than solely selfish gain, they will trust and invest in the individual’s ventures. Even Suzie Or-man in her book and TV program often talks about the benefits of charity (apart from a tax deduc-tion). It’s a universal prin-ciple of success.

Trust brings oppor-

tunity. Mistrust restricts opportunity by driving people away.

If one follows wealthy people around, we will eventually see some ex-ceptional levels of disci-pline to character/charity issues. Many wealthy peo-ple are driven to a lifestyle of charity, not for self-promotion but genuine compassion and empathy. These are the kinds of people who cultivate posi-tive opportunities through trust in principles, not selfish personal gain.

In choosing a trucking company, take a careful look at the character of the owners of the com-pany you are thinking of

driving for. Are these the kind of people you are comfortable helping to get richer? Drivers like your-self bring in profits for the company. Do you trust they will be used well?

Money is just an ampli-fier of that which is in the human spirit. If money is more important than peo-ple it will be reflected in every decision they make. If they are driven for com-passion and betterment of society, it will be evident as well.

Every driver must be comfortable with the character of the people they drive for. This is not a simple step. It’s a deep-ly personal one. It can be

avoided, neglected or ig-nored, but will not bring the level of confidence that careful consider-ation will bring.

The trucking industry has a wide arrangement of different characters. Some will agree with our values, others will not. This choice may not al-ways be considered im-portant by some, but in the broad industry pic-ture it can create signifi-cant long term conflict or benefit.

For those who drive for publicly held compa-nies this may be difficult. They cannot point to one person or family. They are owned by many nu-merous and sometimes voiceless shareholders. In this case one should scrutinize the Board of Directors and senior management team. Prop-er assessment is much more dependent on each individual’s level of per-sonal control. A pub-lic trucking company is

much more subjective to evaluate than a privately held one.

Take the time this hol-iday season and consider the character of the own-ers of the company you drive for. Take the time to thank those who sup-port the same values you do.

Also take the time to evaluate your own associ-ation with charity. It’s the counterintuitive part of business that stands on its own and defends its own virtues very well. b

INCREASE YOUR BUYING POWERBy reducing your equipment purchase to a simple periodic lease payment you’ve increased the buying power of your budgets. For example, a $300,000 annual equipment budget can be leveraged up considerably with leasing, in comparison to applying the total amount to just a few purchases outright. You can also add extra features or add-ons to your equipment for very small increases in your payment. Discover what’s possible at nationalleasing.com

Home Hardware driver Rob Marshall from Water-loo, Ontario, beat all com-petitors at this year’s Na-tional Professional Truck Driving Championships to win both Grand Champion and Rookie of the Year titles for 2013. Manitoba won the Team Trophy, and BC driv-ers John Broker (Port Co-quitlam) and Jose Lecinana (Sooke) placed first and third in the Tandem-Tan-dem and Single-Single divi-sions, respectively, once all points were tallied on Sat-urday, September 21, the final day of the competition at the Tradex Centre in Ab-botsford.

Rob Marshall, who competes in the Straight Truck division, came away with an overall score of 430 points (out of a pos-sible 500), 69 over the 361 average score for all com-petitors. Although Rob has won first place in his divi-sion at past provincial com-petitions – and is also this year’s Grand Champion in Ontario – this was his first National Championship (the “rookie” designation refers to participation in championship events, not to experience as a profes-sional driver).

The Championships consist of:• a written test, which

challenges the drivers’ general knowledge of the industry and equipment,

• a pre-trip inspection, which approximates the drivers’ regular vehicle inspection, and

• the driving competition, which simulates the ev-eryday skills of manoeu-vring, cornering and judging distance. The written test and

pre-trip inspections took place on Friday and the driving competition fol-lowed on Saturday. To compete, drivers must have no preventable ac-cidents in the twelve months prior to the cham-pionships. A “preventable accident” could include even a minor occurrence such as a broken tail light on a trailer.

Competitors, organiz-ers, volunteers and specta-tors were delighted – and relieved – that Abbotsford came through with sun on this last day of summer, in spite of rain and thunder-

storm warnings. A banquet at the Ra-

mada Plaza Abbotsford Hotel & Convention Cen-tre followed the competi-tion, with Shaun Garvey, Organizing Committee Chair, ICBC, and Gary Ry-der, Chief Judge, Chevron Canada Ltd., presenting the awards to winners in each class. Tammy Clifford, Zu-rich Canada, handed out trophies. 2013 National Professional Truck Driving Championships Winners:

The Missing Children Society of Canada is reaching out to the Ca-nadian trucking indus-try for help on making communities safer for kids.

Because of its largely mobile workforce and vast transportation net-work, MCSC is asking motor carriers to par-ticipate in its newly-launched CodeSearch program, a corporate volunteer partnership that unites non-profit, corporate partners, in-dustry and law enforce-ment to help find miss-ing children.

Canadian Trucking Alliance member compa-nies and their employees would be a valuable re-source in helping to find missing children because

of their breadth of re-sources and personnel to mobilize and quickly dis-seminate critical infor-mation when a child goes missing, says MCSC.

Participating is easy. CodeSearch partners download a smartphone app (available for Black-Berry and iPhone) that allows MCSC to push out critical information about a missing child at the touch of a button. If a child goes missing in your community, you’ll immediately receive an alert to your smartphone with a description of the child and other im-portant details. Drivers can get the info directly or dispatchers can pass it to employees on the road. The app uses geo-targeted technology,

meaning it will only send info about children who are missing in your area, or who may have been taken to your area. After getting the alert, all you have to do is keep your eyes open for any rel-evant info that can lead to finding the missing child.

A few simple steps by drivers and carriers can have a huge impact on the families MCSC serves. By becoming a part of the CodeSearch network, trucking in-dustry employees are proactively keeping their communities safer, says MCSC.

A small monthly $2 per employee fee supports the program and ongoing in-vestigations for children who are still missing.

Joining is easy. Contact Tricia Harder at [email protected] to register and for assistance in downloading the app or click here for more info about the organi-zation and program. b

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC sup-ports the annual Commer-cial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Brake Safety Week campaign and inspections, which recently took place on Sept. 8-14. Also known as Operation Air Brake, the effort is aimed at reducing the number of highway crashes caused by improp-erly maintained or faulty braking systems, and em-ploys teams of CVSA-cer-tified inspectors to conduct roadside checks of com-mercial vehicles and their drivers.

The program targets commercial vehicles in the United States and Canada, and is conduct-ed in partnership with the Federal Motor Car-rier Safety Administration (FMCSA). According to CVSA, more than 32,500 vehicles were checked in 2012 during Operation Air Brake, which covered Brake Safety Week and an unannounced inspection

date in May.“Bendix shares CV-

SA’s commitment to Brake Safety Week and its goals of improving vehicle maintenance and inspection, which help keep roadways and com-mercial vehicles safe for everyone,” said Fred An-dersky, Bendix Director of Government and Industry Affairs. “By emphasiz-ing proper training and upkeep practices, Opera-tion Air Brake provides a valuable reminder of the importance of success-ful inspections in today’s CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) environ-ment.”

In preparation for Brake Safety Week, Ben-dix recommends that fleets and drivers familiar-ize themselves with the CVSA inspection require-ments and procedures. Operation Air Brake tar-gets six items for inspec-tion: driver’s license, reg-istration, low air warning

device, pushrod travel (adjustment), brake lin-ings/drums, leaks/air loss rate, and tractor protec-tion system.

In addition to empha-sizing regularly scheduled preventive maintenance and pre-trip inspections, Bendix stresses the impor-tance of proper replace-ment components, air system management, and ongoing technician and driver education.Replacement Friction Matters

When regular mainte-nance or pre-trip inspec-tions point to a need for friction replacement, it’s important to recognize the impact that friction se-lection has on safety and brake performance, noted Gary Ganaway, Director of Marketing and Global Customer Solutions for Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC (BSFB).

“With the federal Re-duced Stopping Distance (RSD) mandate now in

full effect, fleets need to pay close attention to the issue of replacement brake lining performance and RSD compliance,” Ganaway said. “Because not all replacement fric-tion marketed as ac-ceptable under RSD will actually perform to the standard, fleets should ask for evidence of com-pliance from their friction supplier when replacing the friction on their RSD-equipped trucks.”

To support this point, Bendix compared the stopping distance per-formance of various lin-ings on high performance drum brakes. The compa-ny measured the 60 mph stopping distance of a mandate-compliant vehi-cle with OEM brakes and high performance linings. Bendix then replaced the friction with multiple non-high performance original equipment and aftermarket materials that had passed the FMVSS 121 dyno test, but were not suitable for mandate compliance.

With nothing else changed, the vehicle’s stopping distance in-creased from 215 feet us-ing the high performance

friction to 311 feet with the worst-performing af-termarket replacement friction – a stunning 45 percent decrease in per-formance. That 96-foot difference in stopping dis-tance – a total of five pas-senger car lengths – is a stark illustration of road-way safety at stake.

The RSD mandate re-quires most trucks to stop within 250 feet. Phase one of the mandate took effect in August 2011 for new three-axle tractors with Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (GVWRs) up to 59,600 lbs. Phase two, aimed at tractors with two axles, as well as se-vere service tractors with GVWRs above 59,600 lbs, took effect Aug. 1, 2013.

BSFB is a joint venture between Bendix Commer-cial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Ve-hicle Products, LLC.Keeping the Air Clean

Protecting a vehicle’s air system from contami-nation is crucial to main-taining a safe and effec-tive air brake system. Oil, in particular, can be very harmful to an air system, contributing to prema-ture damage in a variety of components such as

spring brake modulating valves and brake chamber diaphragms. And oil-de-teriorated seals can cause air system leaks – a target of Operation Air Brake in-spections.

The installation and regularly scheduled re-placement of air dryer cartridges such as Bendix PuraGuard oil-coalescing air dryer cartridges help ensure a brake system’s longevity and perfor-mance by collecting and removing solid, liquid, and aerosol contaminants before they enter the sys-tem.

“Adhering to a strict preventive maintenance schedule is key to keeping the air brake system clean and operating safely,” said Andersky, who also serves as Bendix Direc-tor of Marketing – Charg-ing. “Air dryer cartridge replacement schedules vary according to the air compressor, operating environment, and vehi-cle usage, but fleets and drivers should check the functionality of their fil-ters with monthly checks for moisture in the air brake system. If moisture is present, the air dryer

Along with the air dryer cartridge, other compo-nents of the air dryer, in-cluding the purge valve assembly and the delivery check valve, should be

inspected and replaced. See the applicable Bendix Service Data Sheet to clar-ify specific air dryer model maintenance requirements and schedule. Inspecting and, as necessary, replac-ing air dryer components on the Bendix suggested

schedule will help ensure proper operation of the air brake system, as well as key components that rely on system air.Knowledge Is Power

Equipping commercial fleets, technicians, and drivers with the tools they need to ensure safe opera-tion through assessment, maintenance, and repair is vital to the industry’s ongo-ing roadway safety efforts. Both new and experienced techs need to remain up-to-date on the technologies and operations of commer-cial vehicle safety systems. Bendix’s commitment to technician education ex-tends to offering field-test-ed sales and service pro-fessionals, a 100 percent ASE-certified field technical support team, and the Ben-dix Tech Team, an expert technical support phone line, among other tools.

The Bendix Brake Train-ing School, one of the in-dustry’s longest-running training programs, has ed-ucated more than 250,000 students since its founding more than 50 years ago.

Additionally, the Ben-dix On-Line Brake School (www.brake-school.com) provides free, flexible, customizable access to its

knowledge database and technical resources. The website features a menu of 5- to 7-minute video segments, as well as a broad range of other train-ing tools on all aspects of electronics and air brake maintenance.

“Round-the-clock ac-cess to specific training gives companies and tech-nicians the best means of advancing their skill sets on the topics that matter most to them,” said John Reid, Bendix Service, War-ranty, and Training (Swat) Team Manager. “As safety technologies advance, technician training and knowledge are more criti-cal than ever to keeping ve-hicles on the road in good working condition.”

Through these efforts and its ever-growing port-folio of technology devel-opments, Bendix delivers on areas critical to fleets’ success: safety, product performance, value, and post-sales support. Ben-dix aims to help fleets and drivers lower total cost of vehicle ownership and strengthen return on investment in equipment and technology, improv-ing safety for everyone sharing the road. b

The government of B.C. is reviewing speed limits on longer stretches of provincial highways between communities, and will be seeking public input starting this Novem-ber as part of the process.

Public input, along with information gath-ered through a techni-cal review of provincial highways, will be con-sidered to identify areas where speed-limit chang-es would be appropriate.

The initial technical review is already under-way. This work includes an evaluation of the lat-est research from around the world, as well as specific characteristics of B.C. highways, such as travel speed, safety his-tory and the volume and mix of traffic.

Public engagement is an important part of the speed-limit review, and British Columbians will be able to have their say on rural highway speed

limits at public forums in communities around the province, as well as through social media and online feedback. Forums will be held in Kamloops, Chilliwack, Nanaimo, Prince George, Dawson Creek, Vancou-ver, Kelowna and Cran-brook starting in No-vember, with additional communities added as necessary.

At the same time, gov-ernment will be seeking public input as it reviews how to reduce the risk of wildlife-related crashes on rural provincial highways, and reviews how to best ensure the safe movement of slower vehicles.

The ministry will also be seeking input from the Union of B.C. Munici-palities, ICBC, police and other key stakeholders. Practical recommenda-tions from this review and a strategy for implementa-tion will be ready in early spring 2014. b

The use of smartphones to enable electronic truck inspections and weigh sta-tion bypasses is growing the U.S.

In July, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Ad-ministration began allow-ing states to use wireless mobile data devices such as smartphones, tablets and onboard computers to serve as transponders in electronic truck inspection and weigh station bypass systems and since then, re-ports CCJ magazine, more states are looking into us-ing new transponders to identify commercial ve-hicles as they approach in-spection points.

DriveWyze’s preclear-ance program, for example, allows states to establish the automated criteria they use to determine whether to inspect a vehicle or is-sue a green light for bypass through an app on a mobile device. The GPS-enabled app triggers a message that

automatically identifies the motor carrier in the screen-ing software system used by enforcement officers.

Drivewyze’s service al-ready is active in 16 states, with agreements in place with four more, reports CCJ.

Prior to FMCSA’s an-nouncement, only DSRC-enabled transponders satisfied the agency’s re-quirement for electronic inspection systems if states were to receive federal funding. That’s because DSRC was the only technol-ogy available at the time of FMCSA’s earlier mandate.

FMCSA says mobile data devices will acceler-ate the adoption of elec-tronic bypass systems that now are used by 39 states. With the new technology, state agencies can set up inspection sites anywhere through geofencing by cre-ating a virtual perimeter around a geographic area – eliminating the need to use fixed sites only. b

National Truck Body Solutions, a distributor of work trucks for profes-sional trades, announced the launch of a new web-site and customer portal, nationaltruckbody.com. The company is led by construction equipment veterans, Craig Paylor (retired President of JLG Industries) and Brent Yohn (former Vice Presi-dent and General Manag-er for Jerr-Dan and Vice President of Field Sales for JLG Industries).

Featuring one of the most customer friendly user-interfaces, custom-ers can easily navigate and view a range of new trucks including carri-ers, dump trucks, lube trucks, mechanic trucks, truck-mounted cranes, vacuum trucks, water trucks, and wrecking and recovery trucks.

“Professional truck customers and fleet man-agers from coast-to-coast are increasingly rely-ing on NTB for detailed

product information, fi-nancing information and after-hour product sup-port”, said Craig Paylor, President & CEO of Na-tional Truck Body Solu-tions.

“As a leading distribu-tor of a range of excep-tional quality brands in-cluding IMT, Jerr-Dan, HANCO Specialty Ve-hicles, TruckCraft, Pro-Carrier, TruckWorks, Landoll, Stahl, VMAC and more, we were seek-ing a customer-friendly solution that enables our customers to quickly find the information they are looking to find”, said Brent Yohn, COO of Na-tional Truck Body Solu-tions. b

Truck cargo crime is a $5 billion-problem in Can-ada, costing half-a-million dollars a day in the GTA alone. Experts say it’s a fi-nancial drain on the econ-omy and, with proceeds often funding violent or-ganized crime syndicates, cargo crime also places a social burden on commu-nities.

Recently, the trucking industry, law enforcement and industry stakeholders came together to try and put an end to this growing problem.

Launched by the Ca-nadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) – in partnership with the Ontario Trucking Asso-ciation and Verisk Crime Analytics Canada – Proj-ect Momentum kicked-off recently in Buford Ont. as an initiative to raise aware-ness and share mitigation strategies on the growing threat of cargo crime in the high-risk corridor along Highway 401.

Taking part in the day’s events were various police forces, the Insurance Bu-reau of Canada and private

insurance companies, and dozens of trucking com-panies from Southwestern Ontario.

Participants discussed how the theft of mobile equipment and goods in transit, storage and in re-tail locations is a major economic burden on the Canadian economy, pro-vides funding for orga-nized criminal networks and has been linked to smuggling and national security threats.

“Because of the lack of national attention this is-sue receives, cargo crime is unfortunately seen by criminals as low-risk with huge profits,” says Jenni-fer Fox, VP Trade and Se-curity, CTA. “The impact to Canadians, however, is quite significant and the ripple effects are far reach-ing. Additionally, while these types of crimes are rarely mentioned on the evening news or the front page, you can be sure the proceeds from cargo crime support some of the higher-profile criminal acts people do hear about often.

“It’s time to stop treat-ing cargo thefts as a victim-less crime.”

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has been iden-tified as a “hot spot” for criminals engaged in cargo crime with a vast pipeline that stretches across the Windsor-Montreal Hwy 401 trade corridor. Police say that recent incidents indicate an increasing amount of cargo theft in Southwestern Ontario.

“Carriers are leading the charge. Being an ac-tive carrier doesn’t indicate that you have a problem, but that you are part of the solution,” says Jeff Bryan, OTA Chair. “I invite all stakeholders in the supply chain to come to the table to help us incite legislative changes.”

David Shillingford, Pres-ident of Verisk Crime Ana-lytics, said Project Momen-tum promotes a heightened awareness of the risk of cargo crime, as well as collaboration amongst the stakeholders impacted by cargo and equipment thefts. “Increased enforce-ment, crime suppression initiatives, and community engagement are among the measures we are sharing to help prevent theft and facilitate stolen cargo and equipment recovery. b

Thomas Built Buses re-cently announced it will further expand its alterna-tive-powered product offer-ings with the pilot produc-tion of a Minotour school bus fueled by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Pilot production starts now with the official production start set for early 2014.

The new Type A CNG Minotour, which will be con-verted by IMPCO Automo-tive, will utilize a GM 6-liter

engine on the 4,500 series cutaway chassis. The 30-pas-senger bus will utilize Type 1 CNG tanks with a 26 gasoline-gallon equivalent fuel capac-ity. It will be CARB-certified and exceed EPA 2010 emis-sions requirements.

“We debuted our very first compressed natural gas bus over 20 years ago,” said Kelley Platt, President and CEO of Thomas Built Buses. “Since then, we’ve put more than 2,000 CNG

buses on the road, and we are proud to add the new CNG-fueled Minotour to our family of alternative-fueled buses.”

Thomas Built’s green vehicle lineup also in-cludes the propane-fueled Minotour and HDX CNG models. A propane-fueled offering of the innovative Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner C2 bus will be available in early 2014.

The CNG Minotour will be converted at the IMPCO Automotive Union City facil-ity, an ISO 9001-2008 certi-fied manufacturing facility which produces on average 3,000 – 5,000 vehicle con-versions per year. b

Allison Transmission, the world’s largest manu-facturer of fully-automatic transmissions, has present-ed some of its latest tech-nologies at the 2013 Shen-zhen International Public Transportation Expo, in-cluding its advanced 5th Generation electronic con-trols and other fuel saving transmission solutions. The Expo, themed, “Green, Intelligence and Intimacy”, took place at the Shenzhen Conference and Exhibition Centre between August 15 and 17.

Allison continues to participate at Chinese bus exhibitions after its ap-pearance at the Interna-tional Nanjing Bus Show in March, which made an impact within the Chinese bus market. At this Expo in Shenzhen, visitors were able to examine transmis-sions on display, as well as to learn about the new 5th Generation electronic controls and the use of the technology in city buses and coaches. Allison ex-

perts also explained how a number of unique and ful-ly-automatic transmission technologies help deliver efficiency benefits, fuel savings and low mainte-nance costs during vehicle operation. This enables Al-lison to help build green and intelligent bus trans-portation within China.

With the rising need to minimize PM2.5 emis-sions in China, bus exhaust emissions have attracted significant attention. At the Shenzhen Expo, Al-lison displayed examples of its 5th Generation elec-tronic controls including upgraded hardware and software. The controls are flexible providing optimal shift strategies for greater efficiency. Embedded in the 5th Generation con-trol module is a new incli-nometer; its precision and responsiveness improve vehicle performance with faster, more accurate shift schedules, resulting in further reductions in fuel consumption. This new

generation of electronic controls also provides two additional levels of acceler-ation management, allow-ing for a greater ability to improve fuel economy by controlling engine fuelling while moderating aggres-sive driving practices.

Currently, Allison is demonstrating the value of its products in Beijing on Special Bus Lines 4 and 5. There are now 60 Fo-ton Ouhui BJ6128C8BCD double-decker LNG buses, which meet GBIV emission standards, that are using a 290hp Iveco F2BE0642F*B 6-cylinder turbocharged natural gas engine and an Allison T325R 6-speed automatic transmission. Adopting natural gas as fuel can effectively reduce 90 per cent of PM2.5 emis-sions.

Allison’s Continuous Power TechnologyTM pro-vides an optimal solution for effective fuel savings and excellent operational efficiency. Allison’s pat-ented hydraulic torque

converter replaces a con-ventional manual clutch, while multiplying engine torque during initial start-up and acceleration, to pro-vide a smooth launch. This transfer of uninterrupted power to the drive wheels enhances vehicle efficiency and performance.

As of April, Beijing citizens will now be able to see 50 JNP6130GSC Youngman double-decker buses in operation; each equipped with a GBV-compliant Cummins en-gine and an Allison fully-automatic transmission. These buses consume three litres less fuel per hundred kilometres when compared to other vehicle models with similar con-figurations.

Automatic transmis-sions have also enriched the image of Chinese bus OEMs, signifying the ad-vanced level of the high-end products being of-fered. In fact, OEMs such as Foton, Youngman, Shudu, Alfa and FAW exhibited their Allison-equipped city, natural gas and school buses, at both the 2013 Nanjing Bus Expo and the Beijing In-ternational Exhibition on Buses, Trucks and Com-

ponents. Over 300 OEMs globally

have chosen Allison trans-missions due to the high fuel efficiency and reliabil-ity advantages, made avail-able exclusively through advanced fully-automatic technologies.

“Technical innovation is an inexhaustible driver at Allison,” says Steven

Chew, Managing Director for Allison Transmission China. “We will continue to drive development of automatic transmission technology by providing highly efficient operational performance through en-hanced functionality, ad-vanced electronic controls and integrated fuel-saving technologies.” b

The driver shortage is a serious issue, says Kelly Henderson, the Executive Director of the Trucking Human Resources Sector Council Atlantic.

Henderson echoed the conclusion from the Con-ference Board of Canada report that by 2020, the in-dustry could face a driver shortage of 33,000 truck operators.

Mandatory entry-level training, or an apprentice-ship type model, according to the panelists, can im-prove the current standard.

According to Easson, the job can be demoral-izing when truckers are

forced to wait for their schedules or left idling at a shipper’s facility waiting for their truck to unload. Rearranging operations so dispatch plans are forward looking will aid wait times.

“Take long haul trips and break them up so driv-ers aren’t on the road and away from their family for a week or more,” said Eas-son.

Easson’s other sug-gestions to help build a stronger workforce with less turnover include main-taining a fleet with better equipment and rewarding the positive in the work en-vironment. b

Eaton has announced that its South Bend, Indi-ana, facility has added a $1.9 million cross-wedge-rolling machine for use in the production of transmis-sion shafts for heavy-duty trucks.

The new machine im-proves manufacturing ef-ficiency by completing a forging process in South Bend with the cross-wedge-rolling system. It replaces a hammering press operation that previously was out-sourced.

In a traditional ham-mering press, brute force is used to forge a hot piece of steel into the size and shape required by cus-tomers. With Eaton’s new cross-wedge-rolling ma-chine, steel is heated to

2200 degrees Fahrenheit and rolled – rather than pressed – to form the trans-mission shafts.

Built in Belarus, Eaton’s cross-wedge-rolling ma-chine is one of less than 10 such systems in the world – and one of only a few in the United States. The South Bend plant cur-rently is completing tests of the new machine, which is expected to be fully opera-tional by mid-September.

“This is a unique pro-cess that will significantly improve our manufactur-ing efficiency,” said David Larkins, South Bend Plant Manager. “We’re very excited to have it here in South Bend.”

The South Bend plant supplies gear forgings to

three Eaton facilities – in Kings Mountain, North Carolina; Shenandoah, Iowa; and San Luis Potosi, Mexico – which assemble them into transmissions for leading global truck manufacturers. South Bend also supplies precision gear forgings for use in off-road and watercraft recreational vehicles.

In 1989, Eaton acquired the South Bend plant, which is part of the company’s Ve-hicle Group business, and employs more than 110 people. The facility contrib-utes nearly $200 million to the local economy through taxes, wages and supplier impact. In addition, Eaton South Bend and its employ-ees donated $41,000 in 2012 to local community organi-zations such as the United Way of St. Joseph County, La Casa de Amistad His-panic Community Centre and the St. Margaret’s House centre for women and chil-dren. b
