I had a client ask me about upgrading his equipment again this month. It’s one of the most consistent set of questions I get.

Upgrading equipment is a matter between your maintenance guy and your fuel cost calcula-tions, not your accoun-tant. The only exception is when an operator seeks help in determining the value of their trade-in on the paperwork. Some sit-uations require a second independent opinion in order to feel assured you understand the whole pic-ture.

When a client is in a lease situation (or owner-ship) and they have very high maintenance costs, upgrading or changing equipment is a significant temptation.

Sometimes an opera-tor can spend $30-50,000 in two or even one year

repairing his truck. It can become very discourag-ing. How do they deal log-ically with this problem? There are a couple ques-tions I ask that usually clarifies most situations.

First, what kind of re-pairs are they? If they are repairs related to pollu-tion control devices, then they do not bring added value or working life to the truck. Just because $2500 was spent this month does not mean the system won’t fail again next. Real maintenance such as tires, engine over-haul, tranny, diffs, etc. bring added value and working life to the truck.

If the majority of the maintenance is pollution control devices, I typically advise to get rid of the equipment. However, if the repairs are true main-tenance that has increased the value of your unit, that may/should change

your perspective. Maybe, if you trade it in, you just repaired a truck for some-one else to benefit from? In return, if you are con-sidering trading for an-other used truck, are you then getting another guy’s problems? Do you have the possibility of having to start your maintenance adventure all over again?

Second, what are you getting on your trade? This may/should be your accountant’s job to figure out if it’s not super obvi-ous. I just overviewed a client’s existing lease and compared it to a pro-posed new lease with an-other used truck. A good accountant will always figure out the interest rate the lease is charging (though they never call it interest). The lease had a net charge of 22% while any equity in the existing truck disappeared. So the client was asked to forgo

2-3 years of payments (now finally with equity) with high maintenance costs and start right from scratch (at 22%), with a truck that got very similar fuel economy. Fortunate-ly the client understood his true situation. As of the writing of this article I cannot confirm what

choice he made but, re-gardless of which it was, he made it with clear and true information. Far too many transactions are made without the opera-tor really knowing what they signed.

The simplest of all transactions are when a truck owned free and

clear is traded in on a new truck, with the new truck being shown at ac-tual market value (not artificially inflated to ac-commodate an artificially inflated trade-in). When trading in a truck the op-erator must know what they are getting and giv-

ing. I once gave an opera-

tor the advice to negoti-ate with a salesman on a truck by eliminating all the technicalities first, I advised him to say that there is no trade in, there will be no financing re-quirements, and there will be no insurance needs of any kind. All you are pur-chasing is the iron. Once the final price is set, then you can see the added cost each of the terms actually bring. When/if you finally mention you already own a truck you will find out what it is really worth. Many salesmen do not like this type of negotiat-ing. Some even say it’s lying (that may be true). However if you don’t, it’s sometimes difficult to get past the salesmanship de-ceptions. If you are in the market to buy equipment, finding out actual figures is critical.

Where too many op-erators fail is in the execu-tion of a deal. When their minds are made up before they sign on the line they forgo their option of walk-ing away. They become vulnerable to last minute pressures or hidden con-tract terms. If the sales-man can tell an individual has already made up their mind, they too often stretch out the negotiations or fane

Bridgestone Com-mercial, a division of Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, recent-ly unveiled an all-new line of Dayton commer-cial truck tires. The new line consists of eight new Dayton patterns that doubles the prod-uct coverage of the for-mer lineup to meet the diverse needs of small fleets and owner opera-tors in a multitude of trucking segments. The product launch coin-cides with the launch of a new Dayton website and tagline, Tires for

Truckers.“With this next-gen-

eration Dayton lineup we are better positioned to deliver a full range of quality products at an incredible value,” said Matt Loos, Director of Truck & Bus Market-ing, Bridgestone Com-mercial. “Truckers wear many different hats and they need to get where they are going with as little down time as pos-sible. Dayton tires are for truckers; affordable and dependable, our tires keep drivers mov-ing day-in and day-out

to help protect their bottom line.”

urgency of the sale to get as much from the operator as they can.

The key to a success-ful trade or upgrade of any sort is the freedom and ability to walk away at any time. If you feel too pushed, intense pressure or urgency, leave. Cool down, this is business not personal. It’s often times better to limp away with the little you have than burning years of invest-ment and effort. One of the highest costs in the business world is wasted years re-cooperating from one bad choice.

The devil you know is often times better than the devil you don’t know. Never get your business in a state of desperation. Des-perate people do desperate things. I have never seen a desperate wealthy business person… at least not for long. b

Bridgestone Commercial Launches All New Line Of Dayton Commercial Truck Tires

American Trucking Associations recently an-nounced it was expand-ing its relationship with Healthy Trucker and expanding the Healthy Fleet Challenge to all its member companies.

“We saw in October at our annual MC&E how successful just a small-scale challenge was, so we wanted to expand it to all our members,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “The health and wellness of our members and their

employees and drivers is very important, so this friendly competi-tion will help people fulfill those New Year’s resolutions and get in shape in 2015.”

Starting now, ATA’s companies can not only compete with each oth-er, but on behalf of the United States against fleets in Canada, mak-ing the challenge a truly international effort to energize the industry to get and stay healthy.

“I participated in the

Healthy Fleet Challenge at MC&E and it was great fun,” said ATA Chairman Duane Long, chairman of Longistics, “so I encourage all my fellow ATA executives to join in the Challenge now.”

“Let’s face it; the vast majority of us could stand to be more active. The Healthy Fleet Challenge is a fun and engaging way to get everyone mov-ing — together,” said Glenn Caldwell, Vice President of Corporate Development at Healthy Trucker. “Small chang-es to lifestyle – like this challenge – have a posi-tive compounding effect over the long term.” b

An overwhelming majority of carriers sur-veyed say they are likely to increase wages while expanding their searches for replacement drivers as attracting and retain-ing operators continues to be a growing chal-lenge for the industry, reports Transport Capi-tal Partners in its latest fourth quarter business expectations survey.

As capacity tightens and cost rise, carriers are responding with higher rates. “However, carriers remain hesitant to add capacity because of a shortage of experienced drivers, with replace-ment far outpacing addi-tions on order boards for new tractors,” observed

Richard Mikes, TCP Part-ner and survey leader.

In the latest TCP sur-vey, over 90% of carri-ers reported driver wage increase expectations. More than one-third said they expect wage in-creases to be in the range of 6-10% – double what was TCP reported six months ago.

“Carriers are seeing potential applicants go to other sectors, like con-struction, where there is more predictable home time and where extra pay is not limited by Federal Hours of Service regula-tions. The end result is that revenue from rate increases will go into purchasing new equip-ment, driver wages, ris-

ing maintenance costs, and regulatory costs – and not as much into the carrier’s pockets in 2015,” added Steven Dutro, TCP Partner.

Despite the short-age of qualified driv-ers, there has yet to be a major shift to hir-ing entry-level drivers. Although over 80% of respondents say they support hiring younger drivers to fill seats, the percentage of carriers actually hiring inexperi-enced drivers is only at 33%.

“It is likely that the shift to hiring more in-experienced drivers will continue, albeit slowly – sixty-four percent of carriers surveyed in-dicated they would be interested in hiring less experienced drivers. Larger companies are twice as likely to hire inexperienced drivers as smaller companies, per-haps because they have the staff and resources to invest in training fa-cilities and co-drivers,” said Richard Mikes. b

Ford announces new collaboration with DowAk-sa and U.S. Department of Energy to develop manu-facturing innovations in automotive-grade carbon fibre for use in future prod-ucts.

High-volume, low-cost carbon fibre components will reduce vehicle weight for increased fuel effi-ciency without sacrificing strength.

Creation of Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation enables acceleration of Ford research and devel-opment of low-cost, high-volume carbon fibre.

Ford and DowAksa are accelerating joint research

to develop high-volume manufacturing techniques for automotive-grade car-bon fibre – aiming to make vehicles lighter for greater fuel efficiency, perfor-mance and capability.

The companies will be part of the newly formed Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, created by the U.S. government. The in-stitute is part of the larger National Network for Man-ufacturing Innovation sup-ported by the U.S. Depart-ment of Energy.

“Our collaboration with DowAksa and participation in this organization signifi-cantly boosts what we are able to achieve,” said Ken

Washington, Ford vice president, Research and Advanced Engineering. “We have a true alliance of highly talented people working to take automo-tive materials to the next level.”

The mission of the in-stitute and the goal of Ford’s collaboration with DowAksa – a 50/50 joint venture between The Dow Chemical Company and Aksa Akrilik Kimya Sanayii AS. – is to overcome the high cost and limited avail-ability of carbon fibre, while developing a viable, high-volume manufactur-ing process. Ford and Dow Chemical began working together in 2012 to develop

low-cost, high-volume car-bon fibre composites.

“This opportunity builds upon Ford’s current joint development agree-ment with Dow Chemical and accelerates our time line to introduce carbon fibre composites into high-volume applications,” said Jim deVries, Ford global manager, Materials and Manufacturing Research. “This collaboration helps us accelerate our efforts to create lighter automotive-grade composite materi-als that benefit customers by enabling improved fuel economy without sacrific-ing strength.”

Ford’s expertise in high-volume manufacturing, design and engineering complements DowAksa’s strength in producing ma-terials that make up carbon composites to create parts much lighter than steel components but with no loss of strength.

“DowAksa’s technology and manufacturing exper-tise will help effectively overcome barriers to entry for the use of carbon fibre composites in high-vol-ume automotive applica-tions,” said Douglas Parks, DowAksa board member and a primary participant in the founding of the Insti-tute for Advanced Compos-ites Manufacturing Inno-vation. “The new institute provides a collaborative platform to accelerate our progress.”

Carbon fibre composites have been used in aircraft and racing cars for decades because they provide high strength with extremely low weight. It is possible to tailor strength properties to a specific component – making it as stiff or flexible as needed for a given appli-cation.

“Our goal is to develop a material that can greatly re-duce vehicle weight in sup-port of improved fuel econ-omy for our customers,” said Patrick Blanchard, Ford supervisor, Compos-ites Group. “The flexibility of the technology allows us to develop materials for all vehicle subsystems across the product line – resulting in a weight savings of more than 50 percent compared to steel.”

Creating lighter vehicles is a major part of Ford’s Blueprint for Sustainability to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Current products that apply a light-weighting philoso-phy include Fiesta – which uses high-strength, light-weight boron steel. The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 uses

high-strength, military-grade, aluminium alloy to help reduce overall weight by up to 700 pounds – re-turning an EPA-estimated 5 percent to 29 percent better fuel economy, depending on engine and driveline configuration on the com-bined cycle, along with best-in-class payload and tow ratings.

The Ford Lightweight Concept Fusion applied such lightweight materi-als as aluminium, high-strength steel, magnesium, composites and carbon fibre to nearly every ve-hicle system to reduce the car’s weight to that of a Fiesta – a near 25 percent cut. Learnings from this concept can springboard light-weighting technolo-gies to a much larger scale of production.

Ford and DowAksa also are working together to re-duce the energy needed to produce carbon fibre com-ponents, cut the cost of raw materials and develop recy-cling processes. b

The Bendix ESP Elec-tronic Stability Program full stability system, a proven commercial vehicle tech-nology that helps mitigate or possibly prevent loss-of-control and rollover condi-tions, is now available as a factory-installed option on

conventional Blue Bird Corporation school buses. Blue Bird, a leading bus manufacturer, is the first North American school bus manufacturer to offer stability technology. More than 300,000 commercial vehicles in the U.S., Can-ada, and Mexico are cur-rently equipped with Ben-dix ESP.

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC, the first North American brake manufacturer to make full-stability solutions widely available for the commer-cial vehicle market, has long known that these technologies aid in reduc-ing the likelihood of com-

mercial vehicle accidents.“We’ve been testing

tractor-trailer, truck, and motorcoach full-stability systems for more than 14 years, and since launching Bendix ESP in early 2005, we’ve seen the commercial vehicle industry embrace the technology in ever-growing numbers,” said TJ Thomas, Bendix director of marketing and customer solutions, Controls group. “We are proud to partner with Blue Bird in making this system available to those fleets and drivers re-sponsible for transporting America’s most valuable cargo of all: the students who depend upon a school bus ride every day.”

Fort Valley, Georgia-based Blue Bird is the lead-ing independent designer and manufacturer of school buses, with more than 550,000 buses sold since its formation in 1927 and with more than 200,000 buses in

operation today. The com-pany employs more than 1,600people in its Georgia manufacturing facilities and an extensive network of dealers and service fa-cilities throughout North America.

“Blue Bird is pleased to partner with a commercial vehicle technology leader, Bendix, to introduce the in-dustry’s first electronic sta-bility control system,” said Phil Horlock, president and CEO of Blue Bird Corpora-tion. “Electronic stability control is established and proven in the commercial vehicle industry, assisting even the most cautious drivers during rain, snow, or clear conditions. We are passionate about offering class-leading features and solutions that delight our customers, and this prod-uct is another example of our commitment.”

Bendix ESP is an anti-lock braking system (ABS)-

based stability technology that recognizes and assists with both rollover and ve-hicle under- and over-steer driving situations. It uses a series of sensors to contin-uously monitor vehicle pa-rameters including wheel speed, lateral acceleration, steering angle, brake pres-sure, and yaw rate. These sensors combine to mea-sure driver intent and ve-hicle direction, helping to mitigate skids, slides, and loss of control– including rollovers – through inter-ventions such as de-throt-tling the engine and selec-tively applying the brakes, typically reacting faster

than a human can.“Often, drivers may

not know a vehicle is un-stable, because they can’t feel what’s happening un-til it’s too late to correct,” Thomas said. “By slowing the vehicle when it nears a critical stability threshold, Bendix ESP helps keep the driver in control and more closely aligned with the in-tended path.”

The combination of its extensive sensor array and both all-axle and individual braking capabilities en-ables Bendix ESP to deliver stability performance on dry and wet surfaces.

Additionally, full-stabili-

When Kent Webber was offered the job as Manager of Subsidiary Operations for The Monarch Cement Company, it was as if he got a call up to the major leagues.

“I had been in this in-dustry for a long time and had purchased cement from Monarch and knew its subsidiaries,” Webber said. “The cement was always top quality and so was how they stood

behind their product. The industry had great respect for the compa-ny’s subsidiaries — ev-eryone knew they were the guys to beat in the industry. You saw their bright Kenworth W900S mixers on jobsites and others started emulating them with equipment. Now, the W900S is the truck you see most when it comes to mixers.”

Producing over

600,000 cubic yards of concrete in 2014 through 21 ready-mix plants, 3 plants making concrete masonry units, and their transportation company in northwest Arkansas, Humboldt, Kan. based Monarch Cement sells cement to its 11 subsid-iaries in Kansas, Mis-souri, and Arkansas. Combined, the subsid-iaries run 245 mixer trucks, 40 tractors for

flatbed hauling as well as hauling bulk cement, plus 17 dump trucks. They deliver concrete to residential as well as commercial accounts in Kansas and Missouri. Monarch has a central-ized approach to its fleet and has standardized on the Kenworth W900S for its mixer fleet. It also is putting into service ul-tra-lightweight Kenworth T680s and T880s for its tractor fleet.

“We have a spread-sheet on each vehicle within the subsidiary companies, complete with cost-per-mile and vehicle age/mileage,” explained Webber. “When a truck is winding down, we ei-ther place it into service for ‘reserve’ duty, put it into a low-mileage op-eration, or sell it outright to a broker.” According to Webber, new trucks

bility system is part of the company’s ever-growing portfolio of technology de-velopments that delivers on safety, plus other areas critical to fleets’ success. By helping to reduce inci-dent potential, improving

vehicle performance and efficiency, and providing unparalleled post-sales support, Bendix can help lower total costs of vehicle ownership, and strengthen their returns on investment in equipment and technol-ogy. b

Kenworth W900S Keeps Monarch Cement In The Mix

coming in are purchased through MHC Kenworth, which matches well with Monarch’s subsid-iary footprint. The Ken-worth W900S models are equipped with 10-yard mixer bodies from Mc-Neilus. Once the trucks or tractors are ready for service, they are sent to Monarch’s subsidiaries.

“The quality of the trucks, and the support we receive from MHC and Kenworth is impres-sive,” said Webber. “I can’t tell you how impor-tant it is to have a dealer group that supports your operation — MHC bends over backwards to sup-port us with any truck is-sue. We have the utmost confidence in Kenworth and MHC.” Kenworth’s W900S, with set-forward front axle has been the go-to mixer for Monarch for many years. “Our drivers love them,” said Webber. “They’re solid, well-built and offer great value; and, they can maximize our loads like no other truck — the set-forward axle gives us the weight distribution we need to comply with bridge laws. We have some W900S trucks that are 18 years old and they’re still run-ning strong. Our overall fleet age is 9 years.”

The latest W900S mix-ers in the fleet feature the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 430 hp and driven through Eaton UltraShift Plus transmissions. They also feature ABS braking with Bendix ESP (Elec-tronic Stability Program), traction control, and disc brakes for improved stop-ping power.

Monarch was one of the first fleets in the coun-try to standardize on the PACCAR MX power plant. “MHC came to us when the PACCAR MX was first introduced and explained how the engine was differ-ent — lighter and pound-for-pound more powerful than any other engines on the market,” said Web-ber. “But, one of the big-gest selling points was the support of the engine by

Kenworth and MHC. We knew from experience how well they took care of our trucks; we knew they’d do the same with the engine. We haven’t been disappointed and it’s been a great business de-cision.”

While Monarch was an early adopter of the engine technology, it’s also mov-ing into new truck technol-ogy. According to Webber, Kenworth’s new platform trucks — the T680 and T880 will be making their debut with three of Mon-arch’s subsidiaries. Bea-ver Lake Transport will run the two T680s, while Salina Concrete Products and Kansas Building Prod-ucts will each run a Ken-worth T880. Both models are powered by the PAC-CAR MX-13 engine rated at 455 hp with 1,650 lb-ft of torque.

The Kenworth T680s, with 52-inch sleepers, were spec’d as ultra-lights — shaving more than 1,700 pounds off the company’s standard line haul tractor. “These tractors will run from Rogers (Ark.), to Hum-boldt, hauling cement or fly ash in pneumatic trailers, carrying more payload, which means more revenue,” said Webber. “The distance means an overnight stay is required every other day to complete the trip. MHC showed us how we could save nearly a ton of weight by spec’ing the Meritor Fuelite drive axle with wide-base drive tires and an aluminum 5th wheel. They also cal-culated our route, speed and loads to maximize payload and improve fuel mileage by choosing the correct transmission and rear-axle ratio.”

Two T880 day cabs will haul flatbed trailers with brick and blocks and are about 400 pounds lighter than the Kenworth T800s currently in service. “Both the T680 and T880 are beautiful machines,” said Webber. “We know our drivers can’t wait to get be-hind the wheel.” b

Modern families want to stay connected to each other and to friends, even when they’re on the go and miles apart. Ford Motor Company and Life360 want to help.

Ford will be the first automaker to offer in-car use of the popular family locator app Life360 with Drive Mode – a new ca-pability that helps drivers stay focused on the road by alerting their fam-ily and friends not to text when they are driving.

“Responsible driving habits are top priorities at Ford Motor Company, and we are pleased to be working with Life360 to help reduce driver distrac-tions,” said Julius March-wicki, Ford Connected Services Product manag-er. “With the integration of Life360 Drive Mode, we are helping to keep drivers’ attention on the road by letting their loved ones know that they are behind the wheel, encour-aging family members and friends to hold off on sending texts.”

Life360 is a free smartphone app that helps family members and close friends stay in

touch throughout their busy day. Users can see where their circle of fam-ily and friends are on a private map, stay con-nected through one-to-one or group messages, and get help in an emer-gency. Life360 launched in 2008, and there are now 48 million families worldwide using the app, which has been retooled to include Drive Mode for Ford SYNC®AppLink™-equipped vehicles.

The AppLink-enabled Life360 app goes to work when the driver connects his or her smartphone to Ford SYNC via Blue-tooth. The connection tells the app when the smartphone is in the car, which prompts the Drive Mode feature to send a message to everyone in the driver’s Life360 cir-cle suggesting they not text the driver. A follow-up message is sent once the driver arrives at his or her destination and turns off the car.

Drivers can also check the latest location of family members through the SYNC display or with voice commands. By say-ing, “Mom’s location,” or

asking “Where is Dave?” the system pinpoints the person’s location on a map and offers a location address.

Ford and Life360 will demonstrate the app at the 2015 International CES in Las Vegas, Jan. 6-9. Drive Mode will be available initially for An-droid phones by spring.

“We are thrilled to be working with Ford to take on such an im-portant issue and help reduce texting and driv-ing,” said Chris Hulls, co-founder and CEO, Life360. “Keeping fami-lies connected is one of our core tenets, and we’re proud our technol-ogy can also help play a key role in promoting distraction-free driving.”

Ford SYNC – the in-dustry’s first system to widely and most afford-ably offer voice-acti-vated control of mobile phones – allows driv-ers to make and receive calls, and operate other features hands-free us-ing voice commands. Ford SYNC AppLink al-lows customers to con-nect their smartphone to their vehicle and control their compatible apps us-ing voice commands or buttons on the vehicle display. With launch of SYNC 3, Ford’s next-generation communica-tions and entertainment system, AppLink will au-tomatically discover and load the Life360 app onto the in-vehicle screen.

SYNC is already on the road in more than 10 million vehicles world-wide. Ford encourages customers to only use mobile phones and other devices, even with voice commands, when it is safe to do so.• Ford Motor Company

and Life360 will help keep family members in touch while commuting with the introduction of the SYNC AppLink-en-abled Life360 app with all-new Drive Mode fea-ture,

• Once the Life360 app is connected through available Ford SYNC Ap-pLink, Drive Mode auto-matically alerts the driv-er’s loved ones that he or she is behind the wheel to encourage them not to text the person until they receive a follow-up alert stating the driver is no longer operating the ve-hicle. b

Preparations are ramp-ing up already for next spring’s inaugural Shell Eco-marathon Americas in the Motor City. Efforts in-clude fixing up downtown streets ahead of winter, and thousands of students on two continents plan-ning, building and testing the extreme efficiency cars they’ll bring to the mile-age competition. In all,

Participants in Trucking HR Canada’s inaugural Women with Drive Leadership Sum-mit will have the op-portunity to hear from a national leader in women’s sports.

Brenda Andress, commissioner of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, has been confirmed as the luncheon speaker at the March 5 event, which features a series of high-profile wom-en from the worlds of trucking, leadership and more. The lun-cheon is sponsored by Kee Human Resources.

“Brenda is the perfect addition to our event designed for everyone who recruits, retains or mentors women in Canada’s trucking in-dustry,” says Trucking HR Canada CEO Angela Splinter.

more than 120 high school and university teams from across the Americas are expected on those newly paved Detroit streets April 9-12, 2015.

For more than 30 years the Shell Eco-marathon se-ries has challenged future engineers and scientists to go ever farther on less en-ergy. But next year marks the first time this signature

automotive competition will be held in the US auto industry’s historic home town.

“We’re looking forward to bringing the Shell Eco-marathon to Detroit — in part to highlight the role that young talent and high technology will play in the re-invention of this iconic American city,” said Niel Golightly, Shell Vice Presi-

Utility Trailer Manufac-turing Company, the indus-try’s largest manufacturer of refrigerated trailers and a leading manufacturer of dry freight vans, flatbeds, and Tautliner curtainsided trailers is pleased to an-nounce that it has added trailer roll stability protec-tion from Bendix Com-mercial Vehicle Systems LLC on the 3000R base model refrigerated trailers as standard. Utility is the first trailer manufacturer

dent of External Affairs for the Americas.

Students are highly mo-tivated. Many hope to one day work in the automo-tive and energy industries. Their goal is simple: to drive the farthest distance, over a closed downtown course, using the least amount of energy. Of course, setting a new record in the shadows of storied automotive head-quarters, where mobility’s future is being shaped, would be icing on the cake.

Students work hard – often nights, weekends and holidays — tuning their designs and building their concept cars. Event orga-nizers are working long hours, too. More than a year of preparation has al-ready gone into this move from Houston to Detroit.

The economic and repu-tation impact of four days’ events attracting visitors and interest from around the world is immense. An-other more visible benefit is the improvement to city street surfaces where the students will drive their low-slung, futuristic ve-hicles. Shell’s $450,000 investment in the streets around Cobo Center, through Campus Martius, and historic Woodward Av-

to include roll stability as standard on their refriger-ated trailers. “Trailer roll stability systems can dra-matically improve a fleet’s safety, and we believe that the technology is ready to begin integrating this speci-fication as a standard and not as an optional feature,” said Craig Bennett, Senior Vice President Sales & Mar-keting for Utility. “We will begin by adding this impor-tant safety component on our base model reefer trail-ers beginning with orders received in January 2015.” Utility is including the Ben-dix TABS-6 Advanced with Bendix Trailer Roll Stabil-ity Program (TRSP). The system combines anti-lock braking (ABS) with a set of trailer sensors, which monitor stability and can quickly and automatically trigger braking interven-tion when detecting con-ditions that may lead to a trailer rollover. It is avail-able in single-channel (SC) and optional multi-channel (MC) configurations. b

enue, will smooth down-town driving for Detroit residents as well. Improved streets also create a safer place for crowds to watch and cheer the teams on.

Local civic and business leaders, including famed racing team owner Roger Penske, embraced and fol-lowed the annual compe-tition long before Shell se-lected Detroit to host it.

“We are excited that Shell chose Detroit to host its 2015 global competi-tion,” says Mayor Mike Duggan. “Not only is Shell bringing global attention to our city, it is further showing its commitment to Detroit by investing in improvements to several of the streets that will be a part of the Eco-Marathon route. We appreciate the benefits Shell’s partnership is bringing to Detroit.”

Many in the region hope Shell Eco-marathon Ameri-cas encourages people to give Detroit another look, and attracts future talent to the US automotive busi-

nesses that call it home.“These students repre-

sent the next generation of the world’s future scien-tists and engineers. Being able to showcase the city of Detroit and the future of mobility in Detroit’s auto-motive industry will hope-fully inspire these students to consider our city and state as a place to be edu-cated and to live and work. I want to personally thank Shell for bringing this terrif-ic event to Detroit and for helping improve our down-town’s infrastructure,” said Roger Penske.

Detroit invites its citi-zens to welcome the stu-dents in their efficiency competitions and take part in the activities surround-ing Shell Eco-marathon Americas. In addition to the mileage challenge street runs, the public is invited to a free, interactive journey into our energy future while visiting Shell Eco-marathon Americas, April 10-12, 2015 at Cobo Center. b

Allison Transmission Holdings Inc. and Cum-mins Inc. announced that they have received approv-al from the Air Resources Board (ARB) in California to sell the Allison H 40/50 EP hybrid propulsion sys-tem paired with Cummins ISB6.7 and ISL9 diesel-electric hybrid engines for transit buses and coaches.

“We are pleased to be the first hybrid system

manufacturer approved for the transit market in California,” said Deborah Gordon, executive director of regulatory issues and hy-brid programs for Allison Transmission.

Allison’s H 40/50 EP hy-brid propulsion system is used for both straight and articulated transit buses. It has been shown to im-prove fuel economy up to 25 percent over similar diesel buses. Additionally, its regenerative braking capability can significantly extend the brake change interval by as much as 350 percent.

The dual Executive Or-der (EO) issued by the ARB to both Allison and Cum-mins allows sales of the Al-lison H 40/50 EP with the Cummins ISB6.7 or ISL9 hybrid engine, and is valid for 2014 models. Allison and Cummins will also ap-ply for a 2015 EO.

“Cummins is pleased the hybrid system has re-ceived approval from ARB as it will provide transit customers another viable

solution designed to meet their business needs,” stat-ed Laura Chasse, general manager of North Ameri-can Bus Business.

The Cummins ISB6.7 and ISL9 diesel-electric hybrid engines feature proven technology de-signed and developed in-house that is opti-mized to deliver the ef-ficiency, durability and performance transit bus customers expect. The ISB6.7 diesel-electric hy-brid engine is rated at 280 hp (209kW) while the ISL9 diesel-electric hybrid engine is rated at 330 hp (246kW) for the transit bus market.

“A major underlying factor for issuing the EO was the approval of the H 40/50 EP’s Heavy Duty On-Board Diagnostics (HDOBD) system, which was also a major milestone that Allison was the first to achieve,” said Gordon.

Since 2003, Allison has delivered over 6,500 hy-brid propulsion systems which have accumulated nearly 650 million miles, saving over 34 million gal-lons of fuel and preventing 340 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. b

Mack Trucks recently announced that Comcar Industries, Inc. recently added 350 Mack Pinnacle models to its fleet, citing fuel efficiency, uptime and a strong dealer network as drivers for their decision.

The trucks were de-livered in September and are already on the road in Florida, Georgia and South Dakota. Mack models com-prise about 75 percent of the Comcar fleet.

“We’ve been working with Mack for more than 30 years,” said Mark Bostick, president of Comcar. “We chose the Mack Pinnacle trucks because of their fuel efficiency and the dealer support we receive.”

Comcar is utilizing both Mack Pinnacle Axle

Back day cab and sleeper models. The day cabs are equipped with Mack MP7 engines and the sleepers with Mack MP8 engines. Both models were built with the Mack mDRIVE au-tomated manual transmis-sion for a fully integrated powertrain, engineered for optimum performance and lower maintenance. The sleeper models feature the Super Econodyne pow-ertrain package that maxi-mizes fuel economy, deliv-ering up to a 3.5 percent improvement in efficiency over similarly spec’d mod-els.

“We appreciate the investment that Comcar has made in Mack,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks North Amer-

ican Sales and Marketing. “We know the Mack Pin-nacle equipped with the mDRIVE offers outstand-ing fuel efficiency ben-efits, which is why we re-cently made the mDRIVE standard on our Pinnacle models. The mDRIVE has a proven record of increasing productivity, safety and efficiency for our customers, and we look forward to delivering these benefits to Comcar as well.”

Detroit Diesel Cor-poration (Detroit) an-nounced that the In-telligent Powertrain Management (IPM) sys-tem will be standard on all Detroit DT12 automat-ed manual transmissions paired with any heavy-duty Detroit engine, be-ginning in March 2015. IPM helps the powertrain operate as efficiently as possible, based on the truck’s momentum gen-erated by the terrain.

The new Intelligent Powertrain Management integrates pre-loaded ter-rain maps and GPS into engine and transmission functions to know the route ahead, up to one mile. The main goal of IPM is to use the momen-tum of the truck most ef-ficiently to reduce fuel consumption. It achieves this by preventing un-necessary shifts, pre-dictively engine braking and fuelling, shifting optimally, and precise-ly controlling eCoast events. IPM is automati-cally ‘on’ once the driver engages cruise control, so benefits of IPM are variable based on the percent of time the driv-er operates in cruise con-trol, and the variably of

the route travelled. Since Intelligent Powertrain Management uses the momentum of the truck to most efficiently move down the road, a route with varied topography (but no extreme change in elevations) provides the optimal opportunity for IPM to improve fuel economy.

IPM also integrates seamlessly with the new Detroit Assurance suite of safety systems to provide virtually effort free driv-ing when cruise control is engaged. Safety is always the first priority, so while Assurance operates in tan-dem with IPM, safety ac-tions always take priority over fuel economy. With these two systems inte-grated together, the IPM, Active Brake Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control work to not only ensure the drivers safety but also to provide smoothest and most fuel efficient driving available today.

“Intelligent Powertrain Management technol-ogy employs many of the same behaviours that an experienced driver uses behind the wheel, but in many situations take ac-tions that even the most experienced driver would

be unable to employ such as engaging eCoast before cresting a hill. Ultimately actions like this will help all drivers achieve great-er efficiency with less fatigue,” said Brad Wil-liamson, manager, engine and component market-ing for Daimler Trucks North America. “We want to give our customers the most advanced technolo-gies available to lower to their Real Cost of Own-ership, and IPM is a key part of that strategy.”

For example, when ap-proaching a grade, IPM will increase road speed to allow the vehicle to climb the hill with the fewest downshifts possible. IPM will also engage eCoast or stop fuelling the engine before cresting a hill, us-ing the truck’s momen-tum instead. When head-ing down a hill, IPM plans for this by automatically accelerating to increase the truck’s momentum, based on the approaching terrain. IPM will also keep eCoast engaged for longer periods of time with fewer interruptions, further ben-efiting fuel economy.

Noted Williamson: “To-gether, the DT12 transmis-sion and Detroit engine combination already con-tribute to improved uptime and efficiency, and with the added innovations fea-tured in IPM, drivers will experience an even higher level of driving comfort and fuel efficiency.” b

CVSA-certified com-mercial motor vehicle safety inspectors conduct-ed 13,305 brake system inspections on trucks and buses throughout North America during the Com-mercial Vehicle Safety Al-liance’s (CVSA) annual Brake Safety Week, Sept. 7-13, 2014.

During the week-long brake safety campaign, local, state, provincial, territorial and federal mo-tor carrier safety officials throughout the United States, Canada and Mexi-co conducted roadside in-spections to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system violations. Improperly installed or poorly maintained brake systems can reduce the braking capacity and stop-ping distance of trucks and buses, which poses a serious risk to driver and public safety.

Roadside inspections conducted during Brake Safety Week included the inspection of brake-sys-

tem components to iden-tify loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system com-ponents. Antilock braking systems (ABS) malfunc-tion indicator lamps also were checked. Inspectors inspected brake compo-nents and measured push-rod stroke when appropri-ate.

This year, inspectors from participating agencies inspected 13,305 vehicles during Brake Safety Week and placed 2,162 commer-cial vehicles out of service (OOS) for brake violations. Of the vehicles inspected, the OOS rate for all brake-related violations conduct-ed in North America was 16.2 percent, compared with 13.5 percent for the 2013 event. The OOS rate for brake adjustment rose to 10.4 percent from 9.0 percent in 2013. The OOS rate for brake components was 9.3 percent, up from 7.1 percent in 2013.

Out-of-service rates for Canadian jurisdictions are historically lower than those in U.S. jurisdictions. This can be seen again this year with the OOS rates for: brake adjustment vio-lations (10.8 percent in the U.S. versus 4.6 percent in Canada; 10.4 percent com-bined), brake component violations (9.5 percent in the U.S. versus 6.8 per-cent in Canada; 9.3 percent combined), and total brake violations (16.6 percent in the U.S. versus 11.0 per-cent in Canada; 16.2 per-cent combined).

2014 Brake Safety Week Results:

13,305 vehicles were in-spected (20,067 inspected in 2013)

1,388 or 10.4 percent of vehicles were placed OOS for brake adjustment (9.0 in 2013, 9.4 percent in 2012, 8.4 percent in 2011)

1,244 or 9.3 percent of vehicles were placed OOS for brake components (7.1 percent in 2013, 7.8 per-cent in 2012, 7.9 percent in 2011)

1,658 or 16.2 percent of vehicles were placed OOS for brakes overall (13.5 percent in 2013, 15.3 per-cent in 2012, 14.2 percent in 2011). b

In 2014, MCI show-cased the Bendix systems on its J4500 model – the industry’s bestselling inter-city coach for 10 consecu-tive years – during a series of Reliability Rallies held across the United States.

“Vehicle safety, per-formance, and reliability are our highest priorities when it comes to engi-neering MCI coaches, and these Bendix technologies represent yet another ad-vancement in all three,” said Brent Maitland, Vice President of Marketing and Product Planning at MCI.

“We’ve already provid-ed roughly a dozen of our J4500s equipped with the Bendix systems to a few se-lect customers that represent extremes in vehicle usage, from high mileage to cold weather, and feedback from the drivers and owners has been fantastic.”

Bendix ESP helps ad-dress both roll and direc-tional instability through

A suite of active safety and wheel-end technolo-gies from Bendix are now available on vehicles from Motor Coach Industries (MCI), the leading intercity coach manufacturer in the United States and Canada.

The Bendix ESP Elec-tronic Stability Program full-stability system, Ben-dix Wingman

Advanced – A Collision Mitigation Technology, Bendix Wingman ACB – Active Cruise with Braking, the Bendix ADB22X air disc brake, and the SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) by Bendix CVS can all be ordered on MCI vehicles.

Bendix is the North American leader in the development and manu-facture of active safety and braking system technolo-gies for commercial ve-hicles.

Headquartered in Des Plaines, Illinois, MCI man-ufactures coaches serving charter and tour operators, line-haul and scheduled-

sensors that recognize and mitigate conditions that could lead to rollover and loss-of-control situations.

Bendix Wingman Ad-vanced is built on the foundation of Bendix ESP. The technology uses a ra-dar sensor mounted to the front of a vehicle to provide active cruise control with braking features, along with collision mitigation technology that delivers both warnings and active interventions to help driv-ers potentially avoid rear-end collisions, or at least help reduce their severity.

“MCI’s commitment to safety and insistence on continuously raising the standards of technology reflects our own, and Ben-dix is proud to partner with them in elevating their coaches to the next level of performance,” said TJ Thomas, Bendix director of marketing and customer solutions, Controls group. “While no system replaces the importance of safe driv-ers practicing safe driving habits, Bendix and MCI are together improving motor-coach safety for drivers, their passengers, and ev-eryone on the road.”

The Bendix ADB22X air disc brake, manufactured

by Bendix Spicer Founda-tion Brake LLC, provides improved stopping power while virtually eliminat-ing brake fade, and of-fers drivers a car-like feel and straight, stable stops. Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake (BSFB) is a joint ven-ture of Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Products, LLC.

Bendix’s SmarTire con-tinuously monitors the pres-sure and temperature of each tire on a commercial vehicle to provide real-time tire status information to the driver. The temperature compensation feature allows the system to accurately monitor pressure whether the coach has been sitting idle or has been driving for hundreds of miles.

Bendix’s ever-growing portfolio of technology de-velopments helps it deliver in areas critical to motor-coach fleets’ success: safety, product performance, value, and post-sales support. Bendix aims to help fleets and drivers lower total cost of vehicle ownership and strengthen return on invest-ment in equipment, tech-nology, and training, which leads to safer highways for everybody. b

With the new 2015 Sil-verado Custom Sport spe-cial edition, Chevrolet pays homage to one of its most iconic pickups, adding a sophisticated monochro-matic look to double- and crew-cab Silverados.

The Custom Sport pack-age features body-coloured front and rear bumpers and a body-coloured grille surround with a chrome-accented black grille. Other accents include 20-inch chrome wheels, chrome door handles and mirror caps, and chrome body-side mouldings. The pack-age also includes projec-tor beam headlamps, tow hooks and heated power-adjusted mirrors.

“The Custom Sport spe-cial edition was inspired by Chevy Custom Sport Trucks of the late 1960s,” said Sandor Piszar, Chev-rolet Trucks marketing di-rector. “Those CST models added a touch of elegance

to a great all-around truck, just like the Custom Sport package for the new Sil-verado.”

The redesigned 1967 Chevrolet pickup entered the market at a time when trucks were starting to move off the jobsites and into the driveways of cit-ies and suburbs. The 1967 Custom Sport Truck, with its bright trim, plush carpet and bucket seats, helped launch a wave of personal use pickups that continues today.

For the 2015 Silverado, the Custom Sport pack-age will be available as LT and LTZ models, including Z71s. LT models will be available in black or white, while LTZs will come in black or White Diamond Tricoat.

Package prices will vary from $1,950 to $2,950, depending on the model. Dealers can place orders starting this month. b

Delphi Automotive PLC (NYSE: DLPH), a leader in advanced driver assistance systems, will partner with Ottomatika, Inc., a com-pany started by Carnegie Mellon University, which provides advanced auto-mated driving software, to jointly develop technology that will help accelerate automated driving.

Delphi, the company that first introduced auto-motive radar systems, will integrate its active safety technologies with Ottoma-tika’s automated driving software. The combina-tion of the two creates a technology platform that enables a vehicle to make human-like decisions when driving in the city or on the highway. The plat-form is flexible and can be expanded and upgraded as the software is updated. It will also support vehi-cle-to-environment (V2X) communications.

“Dealing with highly complex real-world deci-sions is a limitation for much of the current tech-nology in the market,”

said Jeff Owens, Delphi’s chief technology officer. “This partnership with Ot-tomatika will represent a significant step forward in making automated driving a reality. Your car just got a lot smarter.”

Using their individual strengths, Delphi and Ot-tomatika have developed a vehicle platform that can instantaneously make complex decisions, like stopping and proceeding at a four-way stop, timing a highway merge or calcu-lating the safest manoeu-vre around a bicyclist on a city street.

Delphi is supporting the collaboration by making an investment in Ottoma-tika. Together, the two companies will design a short- and long-term road-map of steadily increasing vehicle automation in the coming years.

“Ottomatika leverages ground-breaking expertise and long-term experience in vehicle automation,” said Raj Rajkumar, co-founder and CEO, Ottoma-tika, Inc. b

Freightliner custom chassis corp. recently un-veiled UltraSteer, the RV industry’s first line of fully integrated and precision-tuned tag axles.

Designed for premium RVs, UltraSteer is compat-ible with both disc and drum brakes and offers luxury OEMs I-Series and B-Series configurations to provide optimum flexibil-ity with coach floorplans. FCCC debuted UltraSteer at an event at the annual meeting of the Recreational Vehicle Industry Associa-tion, taking place this week in Louisville.

“With UltraSteer, pre-mium manufacturers now have a clear choice for the best premium chas-sis on the market,” said

Tony Sippel, Director of Dales and Marketing for FCCC. “UltraSteer pro-vides full control and precise manoeuvring in all conditions – as well as increased safety, the elimination of tire wear and lower maintenance. It is the new foundation of the driving experience luxury OEMs want to pro-vide their customers.”

With UltraSteer, the wheels on the tag axle fol-low the ideal turning path of the front suspension, with forward-mounted tie rods enabling the inside wheel to have optimal turning range. The result is a 17 percent reduction in the curb-to-curb turn-ing radius – a 140% ad-vantage over typical steer

tag axles – as well as a 20 percent tighter turning an-gle than the nearest com-petitor. In addition, Ultra-Steer’s outboard-mounted shocks are more reactive to roll input, greatly en-hancing ride and han-dling, and its wide-track suspension arms provide increased lateral stiffness, also improving handling and safety in sudden ma-neuvers.

“UltraSteer is the latest example of how we work to consistently deliver a better driving experience to man-ufacturers and RV drivers,” added Gordie Taylor, RV product manager for FCCC. “Backed by the engineer-ing excellence and innova-tion of the Daimler family, UltraSteer shows how we at FCCC keep our OEMs a step above the competi-tion.”

UltraSteer will be avail-able initially on select FCCC chassis beginning in early 2015. b

Highlighting Mack’s commitment to superior support and service, the inaugural Mack Mas-ters Competition recently kicked off with 991 deal-ership participants, mak-ing up 263 teams from 171 locations throughout the Mack Trucks dealer net-work. The winning team will take home the champi-onship trophy following a hands-on competition June 16, 2015 at the Mack Cus-tomer Care Center in Allen-town, Pennsylvania.

The Mack Masters Competition tests partici-pants’ knowledge of Mack systems and procedures through questions and tasks that require the teams to work together to re-search and solve problems

related to every aspect of the service experience.

“Mack technicians and support teams have im-mense pride in what they do for Mack customers and are always looking for ways to be even better,” said Stephen Roy, Presi-dent of Mack Trucks North American Sales and Mar-keting. “Challenging ser-vice and parts personnel to prove their mettle ultimate-ly will improve their speed and accuracy, leading to re-duced downtime and more satisfied customers.”

Teams in five regions – Canada, Central, North-east, Southeast and West – will compete in two rounds of online challeng-es through March 2015. Each of the three rounds

preceding the hands-on competition has a theme: products, systems and di-agnostics. Within each of those themed rounds are questions related to parts, service, warranty and tech-nology. Five finalists – one team from each region – will be announced in April at the Aftermarket & Soft Products UPTIME confer-ence in Dallas, and will compete June 16 in a real-time, on-site competition in Allentown to determine who takes home the first Mack Masters champion-ship trophy.

The Mack Masters Com-petition is run by the Mack Trucks Academy, which develops and implements Mack’s aftermarket sup-port and service training programs. The academy re-cently received Continuing Automotive Service Educa-tion (CASE) accreditation from the National Institute for Automotive Service Ex-cellence (ASE). b

Mack Trucks Launches Inaugural Mack Masters Competition

Recently, Alberta’s for-est industry celebrated the latest capital investment. Alberta Newsprint Com-pany (ANC) has spent $74 million on a power plant at their facility. Recently com-pleted, the project gener-ates 65 megawatts of elec-tricity, approximately half of what is required to run ANC’s mill. ANC’s project uses state-of-the-art tech-nology, including 10 Cater-pillar reciprocating engines that each produce 8700

horsepower. This project reinforces a

broader theme in Alberta’s forest industry: the indus-try is willing to invest to stay competitive. Between 2011 and 2015, Alberta’s forest companies will in-vest $1.5 billion in capital into facilities throughout the province. To put that into perspective, it’s about $375 dollars for every per-son in Alberta. We know that every dollar that we invest into capital and tech-nology makes us that much more efficient.

One of the unique things about capital invest-ments is that the bulk of the money stays in Alberta. It goes to pay contractors from our communities to install the equipment and to local suppliers of goods and services. The money in turn finds its way to local restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and other commu-nity-based businesses.

We’ve often heard that a diverse economy is im-portant. The energy sector will always be critical to Alberta’s future. But hav-ing other economic driv-ers hedges our bets against downturns and allows for greater fiscal resilience. Alberta’s resource indus-tries are a great example

of how economic diversity can be beneficial. Since the global economic downturn in 2008, forestry, energy, and agriculture have all en-dured their ups and downs. Yet, the negative impact on communities has largely been mitigated because a slump in one industry was usually offset by stronger times in the others. While many communities around the world suffered tremen-dously, Alberta has contin-ued to thrive.

Thanks to these invest-ments and good business climate in Alberta, the for-est industry is enjoying rel-ative prosperity. Over the past year, the values of pro-duction for forest compa-nies have climbed by 10%. This money gets invested into communities in more ways than just capital. 13,000 families in Alberta depend on wages from the forest sector. There are 50 communities throughout the province that receive a large portion of their tax revenue from forestry. And countless community proj-ects like the Allan and Jean Millar Centre in White-court, Spray Lake Family Sports Centre in Cochrane, and Vanderwell Lodge in Slave Lake are supported by the forest industry. Put it all together and you have a mutually beneficial rela-tionship. Alberta is an ideal place for the forest indus-try to do business, and a strong forest sector is great for Alberta. b

Alberta’s Forest Industry: Investing In Our Communities

Atlas Copco QAC 1200 generators produce 1 mega-watt of predictable power. They can be used in prime power or critical standby applications in a multitude of industries, including construction, mining, and oil and gas. Operators also can parallel as many as 16 QAC 1200 generators for greater dependability, ver-satility and reduced fuel consumption.

Atlas Copco featured the QAC 1200 at booth 1800 during the 2014 POWER-GEN International trade-show December 8-11 in Orlando, Florida.

The generators feature plug-and-play technol-ogy that allows users to connect the units with a single cable. Once this is done, they can connect the power cables to a common bus, set the desired param-eters, and the generators automatically synchronize. This enables the units to automatically power down or up, depending on the load requirement, which helps save fuel.

In addition to reduced fuel consumption, paral-leled QAC 1200s provide more dependable power than multi-megawatt gen-erators. Relying on a single multi-megawatt generator

for primary power puts the worksite and budget at risk if an outage occurs. By comparison, running multiple, 1-megawatt gen-erators that are paralleled keeps power supplied to tools and machinery even if one unit goes offline.

Atlas Copco engineers the QAC 1200 into custom, 20-foot enclosures with the same footprint and form factor as ISO containers. This ensures the units are structurally sound and can accommodate features that would otherwise weaken the integrity of standard shipping containers such as larger openings for main-tenance access and con-trol panels on the outside. The enclosure also helps minimize engine noise to 75 dBA at 23 feet, which makes it an ideal generator for sound-sensitive applica-tions near hospitals, muse-ums and schools.

The International Con-vention for Safe Containers (CSC) also approves the 20-foot enclosures, which means cargo ships, railroad cars and semi-trailers can readily transport the QAC 1200 generators.

The QAC 1200 features a Cummins QST30G5 die-sel engine that is EPA Tier 2 certified and provides

1158 kVA/926 kW prime power rating (60 Hz). With this fuel-efficient, electroni-cally governed engine, the integrated fuel tank pro-vides a minimum run time of eight hours.

Engine fluids are plumbed to the edge of the skid on the QAC 1200 to eliminate the hassle of ma-noeuvring pans into the in-terior space. The standard, spillage-free base frame is sized to contain 110 per-cent of all the machine’s fluids and fuel, which safe-guards the site and protects the environment.

Atlas Copco also of-fers optional cold-weather packages for the QAC 1200 generators. They include alternator heaters, coolant heaters and battery char-gers to ensure dependable starts and operations in cold climates. b
