The Americana YMCA Launches 2014 Annual Campaign to Support Community Needs

The Americana YMCA is launch-ing its annual campaign this week to ensure that everyone in the Zachary community has access to vital com-munity programs and resources that support youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Every day, the YMCA of the Capital Area works to sup-port the people and neighbor-hoods that need it most by ad-dressing com-munity issues, such as school r e a d i n e s s , drowning pre-vention and childhood obesity.

“Throughout our community, countless people know the Y. But there’s so much more to our Y than one might think, said Kristen Ho-gan, Marketing Director, the YMCA of the Capital Area. “The Y is more than a gym. It’s a cause. As a char-ity, we’re dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the nation’s health and well-being, and giving back and providing support to our neighbors.”

Last year, charitable gifts from YMCA donors made it possible for

the Y to give over $750,000 in finan-cial assistance toward Y programs and ensured that no one was turned away. Although the vast major-ity of the Y recipients are kids who come for child care, camps, sports, swimming lessons and after-school

programs, the Y also provides assis-tance to adults and seniors for over-all health and well-being programs. One hundred percent of your con-tribution will go directly to provide financial assistance and program support for deserving children and families. All donations are tax de-ductible.

To learn more about how you can support the Y’s cause, please contact Kristen Hogan, Marketing Direc-tor at [email protected], or visit www.ymca.net/give or www.ymca-br.org/Donate for more information.

Zachary Schools Adjusts School Times to Makeup Snow Day MinutesZachary Community School

District Superintendent Scott Dev-illier issued the following state-ment last Thursday pertaining to making up lost days due this past month’s icy weather:

“This year, we have been faced with unprecedented weather condi-tions which have caused the clos-ing of school for several days. As we construct the school calendar each year, we anticipate some of these days, and build a reasonable amount of contingency time into the schedules. Unfortunately, few could have imagined the number of closures we have faced already this year.

Due to state requirements, it will be necessary for students to make up some of the missed in-structional minutes lost during the January closure. It is our goal to ensure that this is done with as little disruption as possible for our students and their parents. As a re-sult, beginning on Monday, Febru-

ary 10, all Zachary Community School District schools will dis-miss 15 minutes later. The schools will adhere to the adjusted dis-missal times for the remainder of

the school year. First Student will alter the bus drop off times accord-ingly. Please see the chart below for the new dismissal schedules.

My staff and I worked to de-

velop what we believe is the most favorable solution to provide the students with the adequate instruc-tional time. We appreciate your understanding.”

ZHS Library Invites the Zachary Community to Author Program Zachary residents are invited to

attend an author event on Thurs-day, February 27, hosted by the ZHS Library. Fletcher McHale, the guest author, is a writer from central Louisiana, who earned a history degree and currently lives on her century-old family farm in central Louisiana.

Her first novel, Save Us a Seat, released September, 2013, is the endearing testament of a brutally honest, no holds barred and fierce-ly loyal friendship between three women. Ride the rollercoaster of emotions as the friends navigate the sometimes hilarious, often touching and always loyal road of friendship and the joys and trials it brings.

Two writing Q&A sessions will be held in the ZHS Library at 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. for stu-dents. An after-school session at 2:45 p.m. includes a book talk, book sale and refreshments. Com-munity participants may attend any of the sessions and are asked

to register by email to [email protected] by Thursday, February 20 [please in-dicate which session(s) you will attend].

The Broncos took an early 1-0 lead in the game against BRHS when Senior midfielder Thomas McHugh scored a beautiful goal in the fourth minute of the game. First In Counters is a Marble and Granite Family AffairBy James Ronald skains

Brad and Deborah Parnell have been in the granite and marble coun-ters and shower business since 1980. However, it wasn’t until a fam-ily meeting in 2003 that the Parnell family came together with a unified front to pursue their dreams.

“My brother, Willie and I grew up in the family business, but left the business a couple of times to pursue, what we thought at the time, were good career goals,” Dustin Parnell, CEO of the Zachary based First In Counters company related.

“Back in the late 1980’s when the bottom fell out of home building in the Baton Rouge area, my Dad moved us to Florida where he set up shop for granite, marble and cul-tured stone work. In the 1990’s when the home building business picked up steam again in the Baton Rouge area, we moved back to Zachary and Dad opened up a shop. By that time I was in high school at Zachary.”

“After graduating from high school, I attended Nichols State where I played baseball,” Dustin Parnell pointed out. “Before I fin-ished at Nichols, I transferred to Thomas College in beautiful Thom-asville, Georgia where I played baseball and coached.”

Parnell obtained a degree in busi-ness management from Thomas College (now Thomas University). Thomas University is a small pri-vate university with an enrollment of around 1,100. Class sizes average 10 students per class.

“Willie and I both worked off and on for the family business dur-

ing those early days,’’ Dustin Parnell recalled. “Willie became an electri-cian and worked in the plants in the Baton Rouge area. After 9-11, I got into the home security business with a well-established company. It seemed like everyone wanted a se-curity system after 9-11. Needless to say, I made a lot of money selling security systems.”

“However, in 2003, Dad and Mom got us together to talk about their businesses and the opportuni-ties they saw for the future in granite and marble counters. At the time, the business was doing about $650,000 a year. We put together a budget to see what kind of gross revenue we needed for Willie and me to come into the business.”

“The budget indicated that we could generate the revenues that we needed to make money although Willie and I both took pay cuts to come back to the family business,’’ Dustin Parnell related. “Actually our timing was perfect as 2 years later Katrina struck, tearing up south Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.” By expanding our business we were able to take advantage of the oppor-tunities this huge rebuilding effort required,” Dustin Parnell acknowl-edged. “Perhaps the best thing that we were able to do was to bring Wil-lie’s wife, Mandy in as our Office Manager.”

“When I started with First In Counters, it was supposed to be only part time,’’ Mandy Parnell said with a laugh. “I started doing invoicing, then added inventory, and then add-ed scheduling. Before I realized it, I was doing everything and enjoying

it.”“Prior to coming to work with

First In Counters, I had picked some management experience which I built on, after starting here. I do ad-mit that I had a “take charge” atti-tude before I came to work here. But my ability to multi-task has made the job easier for me.”

First In Counters services South-ern Louisiana with natural stone (custom granite countertops), cul-tured marble, Portofino and Tile showers, and quartz surfaces. First In Counters has developed into one of the South’s premier fabricators of hard surface products. The fam-ily owned and operated company has built a reputation on impeccable craftsmanship, honest business and satisfied customers since 1974 when Brad Parnell first started installing stone.

Sixty percent of the stone used by First In Counters is imported from Italy and Brazil. One of their major suppliers is Verona Marble Compa-ny of Verona, Italy. First In Counters is a member of the Marble Institute of America, Stone Fabricators Alli-ance, Capital Region Builders Alli-ance, and the BBB Reliability Pro-gram.

“First In Counters is not only a family business, but a third genera-tion family business,’’ Mandy Par-nell pointed out. “Our son, Zachary who is 23 has been working on our installation crews since he was 17.”

First In Counters can turn out a lot of kitchens and bathrooms in a week. The installation crew employs 16 people; ten more are employed in the fabrication shop, inventory yard

and office. Granite and Marble stone weigh between 25 and 40 pounds per square feet. Special equipment is required to move the slabs of stone in the fabrication shop.

The First In Counters shop is a state-of-the-art stone work area with overhead cranes, material handling devices, polishing equipment and stone cutting equipment designed for a variety of different cut, including counter top edges and backsplashes.

Stone has unique natural veining, pitting, fissures, micro-cracks, and color variations including patterns, markings, and darker or lighter spots, which are all natural charac-teristics of stone. Characteristics are not meant to be deficiencies or faults, nor can they be avoided in fabrication. The surface of granite is not as consistently smooth or shiny as glass to the eye or touch.

“We can produce three times as much now, than we could back in 2006,’’ Dustin Parnell stated. “Our equipment upgrade has helped, but overall our company employees have well over a hundred years’ experience in working with stone. We do work from Natchez to the Gulf Coast and all throughout Baton Rouge and South Louisiana.”

Parnell concluded, “First In Counters is one of the few contrac-tors in the State of Louisiana certi-fied to handle granite and marble. It wasn’t easy to get that certification. It took a lot of classroom work and working with the Marble Institute of American to reach our goal of being able to do the very best job possible for our customers.”
