Principal’s
Message
This week is NAPLAN. This school takes the
completion of NAPLAN very seriously and as a result I
encourage parents to ensure students in years 3,5,7,9
have a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast before
NAPLAN. It would be nice for the rest of them as well.
NAPLAN was never designed to rank order students
or schools. This is a creation by overly competitive
parents, media and unfortunately some schools.
NAPLAN is a diagnostic tool to determine focus areas
in Literacy and Numeracy, both for individuals and the
school. When results are available, Mrs Sanderson in
her role as Learning Support Teacher will complete an
analysis that will determine our focus areas for Literacy
and Numeracy and plot our progress on one of our
strategic directions; the movement of students to the
top two bands of NAPLAN. That is a very complex
way of saying we have a look at the results, reflect and
then act.
Last week was our athletics carnival. Congratulations
to Mrs Morgan, staff and students for an outstanding
carnival. The day was colder than my wife’s stare when
I perform the Trundle tipsy two step on the dance
floor once a year. Oxley was the champion house,
winning both the swimming and athletics carnivals this
year. Congratulations to all the students who tried
their best and as usual I have had no reports of poor
student behaviour on the day. Funny, I had a dream the
night before that a couple of parents were smoking
inside the grounds. That could not have been possibly
true in 2019, so I definitely would not have seen that. It
was just a dream. Thank you to the P&C for providing
the canteen, especially the spag bol and pumpkin soup,
perfect for a day when an artic breeze is blowing
across the ground. It is cold when Dylan Martin is
wearing a jumper.
In addition, last week we distributed Mother’s Day gifts
and community support packages. These included
doonas, groceries, sheets and blankets. This week we
have PJ’s, socks and tracksuit pants. These gifts
hopefully make our families lives a little easier
financially. Distributing and packaging these products
requires many hours for staff and other jobs have to
suffer. Economically, this is the theory of opportunity
cost. If labour is allocated to one job, it is ultimately at
the cost of another. We are very lucky at this school
that staff simply work harder and longer during these
times. This is the social theory of respect for the
school and themselves and caring for their community.
I hope the community appreciates staff efforts,
especially Jo Randall, Jo Charlton and Jacko. We have
plenty of J’s this year, I may have to buy a vowel. I
often become frustrated with this town because praise
and recognition are distributed to this great school via
an egg cup and criticism can come by the truckload.
However, on Friday a student said to me that they did
not want to get out of bed because they were so warm
under the new doona. After that comment I become
bullet proof and Teflon coated because this school is
making a difference in students’ lives.
Recently I applied for a state government grant in
partnership with Threads together, Sydney for a mobile
clothing and footwear service to visit our town and
surrounding towns. The idea is a truck will visit the
towns with seasonally appropriate clothing and
footwear for young people. The truck will concentrate
on youth styles and will as a result not affect local
businesses. Hopefully, this service will reduce
disadvantage caused by distance from a major
population centre and allow all young people the
amazing feeling of receiving new clothes /shoes for
maybe a small gold coin donation to the service. By
attending schools the truck focuses directly on the
market. It will also be an education service to increase
the teenager’s awareness of government and non
government welfare services as this information will be
available from the truck. If the grant application is not
successful all I have lost is skin on the keyboard.
As a parent and educator, I have made many mistakes
over my 26 year career in public education and my co-
raising of three children. I have had a few achievements
as well. One thing I am one hundred percent certain, is
the emotional damage that can occur when parents
compare their children against siblings or other
children. In addition, it is often damaging when students
are elevated beyond their status and ability because
they are big fish in a small country pool. In Trundle
they are sharks, across the country, often sardines.
When the realisation occurs, the fall can be dramatic
and painful, not coated in olive oil or lemon sauce. My
advice is: celebrate your children’s success and allow
them to be individuals. Except their quirky behaviour
and encourage them to be better in themselves today
then what they were yesterday, rather than compare
against others.
Last week I received a phone call from the Rotary Club
in Wollongong. They have donated two 22 500 litre
rainwater tanks to the school. These tanks will catch
water from the Library roof which currently washes
Telephone: (02) 68921303 Fax: (02) 68921184 Email: [email protected] School webpage – https://trundle-c.schools.nsw.gov.au Facebook - www.facebook.com/TrundleCentralSchool
Page 3 Term 2 Week 3
down the gutter. These tanks will not solve our water
problems because it actually has to rain to fill a tank but
coupled with the solar panels that will be installed this
year will reduce our environmental footprint and as a
result reduce costs. this year will reduce our
environmental footprint and as a result reduce costs.
Environmental footprint, look at me all politically
correct and grown up. I thank Hazel Walton for co-
ordinating this grant. I was particularly pleased with the
club secretaries praise of our newsletter, highlighting the
positive message it contains for students. This
newsletter is the most complained about and scrutinised
aspect of our school. I am very honest in my writing
because I believe schools are not only developers of
Literacy and Numeracy, but avenues of pastoral care,
social change, and empowerment of young people. If a
student leaves this school with the attitude and
confidence to achieve their best and the skills to make a
difference, we have been successful.
I am very disappointed with the mainstream media
coverage of this drought. It seems the most coverage is
given to what we cannot now achieve because of
drought such as watering ovals, not want we can and do,
achieve, every day. This school has taken the attitude
that as much as possible we are going to be a green
oasis physically and emotionally for our students and we
are going to work to provide goods and services or
money to help our entire community. We have raised
money to purchase water to allow our oval to survive, a
decision not to let this drought beat us until we have no
option. Country people are very resilient and this needs
to be acknowledged. Also, rural decline because of
international market pressures and the restructuring of
farm employment through mechanisation and
technology has been occurring for a considerable period
of time, affecting this community. After the drought
breaks and it will, they always do, are we going to be left
out of the public consciousness again?
At Trundle Central School most students proudly wear
school uniform. As the cold weather approaches,
students often start to push the boundaries of uniform.
The school P&C has indicated that our school is a
uniform wearing school and staff support this stance.
Our clothing pool provides second hand uniform free of
charge and we have some capacity to financially help
parents who cannot purchase uniform. Therefore, if a
student is consistently out of uniform and we have
offered uniform or financial support, I believe as the
Principal, I can reasonably assume that students are
choosing not to wear uniform, thus the school welfare
discipline measures are appropriate. I think this is
reasonably clear.
Every three weeks, the department Home School
Liaison Officers visit our school to check attendance.
This is not because we have poor attendance. The
opposite is true when compared to similar communities.
The reason I have invited these people to our school is,
we are not perfect in terms of attendance. This great
country provides universal public education of a
standard which is the envy of most countries in the
industrialised world. All students should be taking
advantage of the opportunities paid for by many but
available to the individual no matter what race, gender,
sexual orientation, age or geographical location. If your
child is away from school, you are legally required to
provide an explanation acceptable by the principal within
three days.
Despite the tough economic conditions, two people
have taken the risk of starting new businesses in
Trundle. We have a new café and a beautician.
Congratulations to these people and I hope they are
successful as the decision to commit to these
enterprises requires the willingness to risk failure. The
acceptance of risk is one of the most difficult decision
any person can make.
On Friday night St Patrick’s school was featured on Win
News. Trundle is lucky to have two quality schools for
parents to choose from, both with outstanding facilities
for learning and much more than a short news
presentation could highlight.
I will visit the beautician when the building also has the
Trundle Magician.

Weekly Woof
25 happy barks to our students for not feeding me.
I have started to lose weight and will eventually
return to my pre-accident weight. The only thing Southo has lost is his full length mirror.
50 happy barks to all the students who attended
the athletics carnival. It was a cold day but as per
usual our students were well behaved and took
part in events with enthusiasm. Well done to
Oxley for starting a winning dynasty.
50 happy barks to Pambula Rotary Club. These
wonderful people are coming to Trundle again. A
movie night is planned, ladies pampering, trivia
night and community golf day. I hope Trundle
people make them feel welcome. They are even
having a working bee across the school.
50 happy barks to our students using the outdoor
spaces. It is wonderful now to have high speed
internet in all our outdoor spaces.
150 angry barks to those students who take their
rubbish down to the oval (it is actually a rectangle)
and leave it behind. Southo almost tripped the
breaker on Friday.
25000 angry barks to those people who were make
silly voices during the national anthem. This is the
greatest country in the world and if you make fun
of the song you make fun of the country.
Sport carnivals and NAPLAN are challenging rewarding experiences to some people. To others
they are often difficult emotionally because of
feelings of failure. I completely understand because
all my life I wanted to be a guide dog. When it
came to my last test I was not good enough to
pass. The feelings of failure made me want to even
eat canned dog food. Imagine a proud pedigree
animal such as myself eating out of a can. The guide
dogs were not for me but I found my skills as a
pets as therapy animal and came to Trundle.
Different job but just as important and rewarding. I
am telling you, find your place and do not feel you
fail. You just walk a different track.
Until next week,
Ajax
Even Ajax needs to rest sometime.
Bark with laughter with Ajax:
Q: What is small, cuddly and bright
purple?
A: A koala, holding his breath!

NAPLAN This Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th
and Thursday 16th, Years 3 and 5 will sit the
NAPLAN exams. These exams help the school map
your child’s progress and identify their strengths.
Please ensure your child has had a good night’s
sleep beforehand and a healthy breakfast on each
morning.
Clothing It is vital that your child/ren’s names are written
into any items of clothing they wear to school. This
reduces the risk of confusion and ensures that
jumpers and jackets are returned to their owners if
they are misplaced.
Hats Although Terms 2 and 3 are not part of our NO
HAT NO PLAY policy, we are recommending that
the students bring a hat on sport days and P.E. days
to reduce any risks of sunburn and windburn.
CWA Public Speaking Competition This year the CWA Public
Speaking competition will be
held in Trundle on Tuesday 28th
May. We are able to send two
students from Year 3/4 and two
students from Year 5/6. If there
are more than two students
from each group, the students
will be judged and two will be chosen to represent
our school. Students who have been working on
their speeches will be asked to bring them into
school this week to ensure they are ready for the competition during the following weeks.
Simultaneous Storytime
We would like to invite parents and carers to join
us for this years Simultaneous Storytime. We will
be reading the story and then participating in a
range of fun activities from 9am – 11am. It will be
held in the Library.
Crunch and Sip Children are encouraged to bring FRESH fruit or
vegetables to school for Crunch and Sip. They are
also able to have a sipper bottle of water in the
classroom.

Congratulations to all of the students who
attended the athletics carnival on Friday. While it
was cold and occasionally wet our students
enthusiasm and demeanour was simply excellent.
Congratulations to Oxley on their win and a
massive well done to Mrs Morgan on her fantastic
organisation of the day.
This week our Year 7 and 9 students will be sitting
the NAPLAN examinations. I have included a
timetable in this newsletter. I have reminded the
students about these exams this morning and
suggested they make sure they are even better
rested than usual.
Today our victorious chess team [victorious from
round 1 against Trangie!!] are again taking the
battle field for what should be a huge clash against
the titans of chess- Grenfell. Good luck to our
team and thanks to the Yoda of TCS chess Mr
Lynn for all his organisation and training of our
students.
Our teachers distribute assessments during the
term in an attempt to give the students an even
work load. Before an assessment is handed out to
the students I check them against content and to
make sure that the instructions and marking
criteria are clear. While sometimes assessments do
overlap we make sure that students have ample
time to complete their assessments. Please check
the newsletter each week to see what assessments
your child has and support their study time at
home. Over the next semester I will be asking
teachers to decrease the amount of actual class
time being devoted to assessments, which means
that our students will need to be more
independent from their teachers to complete their
assessments.
As always if there are any queries in regards to
secondary matters please contact me at school.
Have a great week
