    CHAPTER I

    INTRODUCTION

    A. BACKGROUND

Language testing is a kind of test that particularly tests the

language competence. It has an objective to measure the

achievement of the student in learning language or to check what

students can do with language. Language test also may be designed

chiefly as a device to reinforce learning and to motivate students in

their learning activity. In language testing, there are some items

must be tested, it divide into language skills and language areas.

Language skills are consist of listening, speaking, reading and writing

test, while language areas are consist of grammar and vocabulary

test. It can be in the form of essay question or in multiple choices, it

depends on the learning and testing objective.

Test of language ability may be inaccurate or unreliable in sense

that repeated measures may give different result. These measures

may also be invalid in the sense that the other abilities are mix in. To

be useful, the test must be provided with reliable and valid

measurements for certain purposes. To assess the reliability and

validity of test, we must do some kinds of analysis in order to get the

objectivity of test of question before we use the test item for the

student. That is why, in this small research, I try to assess the

reliability and validity of a test by using multiple choices test.

    B. CONTENT OF TEST

This try out uses multiple choices instruments to assess the

reliability and validity of the test that consist of six items will be tested.

They are four language skills, listening, speaking, reading and reading,

    1

also two language areas, such as grammar and vocabulary. Each items

of test care consist of five number of question so the total question of

this try out section is 30. It is the ideal number of test that required in

    language testing.

    C. PLACE OF TRY OUT

SMA Negeri 1 Galesong Utara is the place that had taken to

execute this try out on 10 December 10 th 2011. There are 30 students

are tested in this section, they are from Science class of Second Grade

    The Farmer and the Bird

A farmer came across the bird with a broken wing. He picked it up,

took it home and look after it lovingly, even though his wife complained

bitterly about his wasting too much time on the creature.

After some time, the wing mended and, because they did not want

the farmer to have kept on arguing with his wife all the time, it decided to

    go back to its nest.

When the farmer discovered that the bird was gone, he was so

upset that he went out to look for it. Eventually, he found it again, and

was greeted happily by the whole family of the bird. As the sign of their

thanks for his care and attention, the birds gave him a little box, and told

him not to open it until he got home.

To his surprise, the farmer found the box full of precious stones.

When his wife saw them, she decided that she too deserved a reward,

and she went to see the birds. The birds gave her a little casket; but this

one was full of devils. The devil jumped on her as soon as she opened thecasket and chased her away.

To interpret the test realibiility (rn), Sudijono (2003:209) provides

criteria. If the result of calculation (rn) is the same or greater than 0.70, the

evaluated test is highly reliable. Conversely, if the result calculation is

smaller than 0.70, the evaluated test is not highly reliable. Therefore, the

result of calculation is not reliable (rn = 0.25).

    CHAPTER IV

    CONCLUSION

Based on the result of analysis items had explained above, we can conclude that it must

be consider using the test in the real test. The result shows that the contents of test were lack bothin reliability and validity. The result of reliability analysis shows the score 0.25, based on the

theory the score is in the category not reliable or unreliable. The result of validity analysis also

out of valid category, most items was invalid. Then about the full item analysis, in terms of

difficulty, discriminant, and full items, the analysis show that most of items were desirable for

    31

    56/60

students. In the item of discriminant, the item of the try out is lack on property, exactly only ten
