So the tree carries on a chemical process of its own in order to be able to live and grow. Between the wood of a tree and its bark, there is a thin band of living, dividing cells called “the cambium.” As new cells are formed here, those that are formed on the wood side of the cambium mature as wood. The cells formed toward the outside mature as bark. In this way, as the tree grows older it increases in diameter. The diameter of the woody part of the tree continues to grow greater and greater. But this doesn’t always happen with the bark. Often the outer bark becomes broken, dies, and falls off. Trees grow in height as well as in diameter.
