To enham Hotspur and Arsenal will clash in a North London derby at Wembley on Saturday and the sparks are set to fl y as both teams chase Champions League slots.

Mark Gleeson

T his weekend in the English Premier League starts with a famous North London derby as To enham and Arsenal clash at Wembley.

It is always a game of great intensity and with a rich traditional of rivalry, but takes on added

importance as the two sides sit outside of the top four and could miss out on Champions League football in the next campaign.

This season Arsenal did not participate in the Cham-pions League for the fi rst time in 18 seasons, while Spurs played their way into the competition for a second succes-sive year, having only participated once before in the 2010-11 season.

The top four in the EPL play in next season’s elite Eu-ropean cup competition. With Manchester City set to run away with the title, that leaves neighbours Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea currently in position to fi ll the other slots.

Chelsea’s lead over Spurs in fi h place is just a point though, while Arsenal are sixth, a further four points be-hind, but with a chance to reduce Spurs’ lead to just one

point this Saturday.TAB soccer punters must decide if Arsenal’s weekend 5-1

mauling of Everton is the start of another run of wins. The Gunners are in a buoyant mood again a er bringing

an end to the Alexis Sanchez saga and seeing Mesut Ozil fi -nally agree to extend his contract in return for a pay hike to 350,000 pounds a week.

But manager Arsene Wenger has warned the German international that it comes with a far greater responsibil-ity to drive the team forward on a more consistent basis.

“He has commi ed his future to the club in a period where we are in a tricky position in qualifying for the Champions League,” he said. “You expect that he becomes the leader and takes the responsibility to lead the team to success. He will be the technical leader of the team.”

The derby might mark the start of a new energy from Ozil in what could be another record crowd at Wembley.

To enham look the more complete package at the mo-ment though and may collect a home win, especially in light Arsenal’s dreadful away record against the top six in the EPL.

All TAB soccer pools this weekend off er an opportunity to bet on the key matches in the top two fl ights of English football.

Domestically, it is the fi rst round of the Nedbank Cup that traditionally does not spring too many surprises. Over the last decade amateur sides have rarely upset profession-als from the Premier Soccer League, but when it does hap-pen it is usually of seismic proportions, like when third-tier Maluti FET College beat Orlando Pirates 4-1 in 2013.

TAB soccer punters nevertheless need to look for oppor-tunities in South Africa’s equivalent to the FA Cup for the underdogs to shine and spark big payouts.

“It’s not Portsmouth. I remember Portsmouth - such a small stadium,

the atmosphere was absolutely incred-ible. In here, the atmosphere is a bit quiet and there is not very much

enthusiasm. But the players like to play at home.”Jose Mourinho

criticises the atmosphere at Old Traff ord and says it’s be er at

Portsmouth’s Fra on Park.

“The feeling is worse than a loss. The man-ner in which we conceded, we can’t defend a basic cross and you know Bidvest Wits will be looking to bring crosses into the box. I’m just angry that we lost the match at a time where you want every point. Tonight’s point won’t value that much because we could have won that match. There were stages

where I thought we were get-ting too desperate. Instead

of just being calm and taking our actions, and the minute you are in a rush, the process won’t come through.”Kaizer Chiefs head coach

Steve Komphela expressed his displeasure at only

drawing with Bidvest Wits last Saturday.

Zimbabwe striker Evans Rusike has been the subject of interest by several top teams over the last couple of seasons, but Super-Sport United have eventually won the race for his signature.

Rusike was signed from Maritzburg United as a replacement for New Zealander Jeremy Brockie, a big money sale to Ma-melodi Sundowns last month.

And the 27-year-old has already opened his account, ne ing in the 4-2 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic at the weekend that was just a second win in 14 games for ailing Matsatsantsa.

That goal is the continuation of some fi ne form for Rusike, who had scored three goals in his last fi ve games for Maritzburg, and now has nine for the season in all com-petitions.

“SuperSport is a great club. They have achieved a lot in their short history, espe-cially in the cups,” Rusike said a er his

move. “They have also shown that they can get

players to Europe and it remains my dream to play in Europe.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were also reportedly in the hunt for his signa-ture, but SuperSport came up with the cash, and have also sold young defender Denwin Farmer to Maritzburg from next season as part of the deal.

“We have been watching Evans with great interest over the last few years at Maritzburg,” SuperSport CEO Stan Mat-thews said. “He has all the makings of a great striker with blistering pace and great skill, and he can fi nish in the box.”

Rusike rose to prominence at Zimba-bwe Saints in his homeland, one of the old-est clubs in the country and a team with a rich tradition of developing players for the country but which has now fallen into ter-minal decline.

He was signed by Maritzburg ahead of the 2015-16 PSL season though it was some months into the season when he scored his

fi rst goal in a 1-0 win over University of Pre-toria.

He ended his maiden campaign with nine goals, including goals against Chiefs, Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Super-Sport, suggesting he was a man for the big occasion.

His second campaign was less successful as he ne ed just four times, but he was at times played out wide rather than as an out-and-out forward.

He reverted to that position this season under coach Fadlu Davids and rewarded that faith with goals. Rusike will likely be in action this Sunday when SuperSport this time travel to Celtic in their Nedbank Cup last-32 game, a repeat of this past week-end’s league encounter.

He will certainly be one to watch for TAB soccer punters in the coming months as Su-perSport generally create a lot of chances.

Given Rusike’s pace up front plus strong wingers that deliver well from wide areas, he could be a good bet for the Golden Boot prize at the end of the campaign.

“This is something that has been a dream for many, many years. There were times we said this dream is not going to hap-pen – there are too many bumps in the road. But we never gave up.”Former England captain David Beckham an-nounces the launch of a Major League Soc-cer (MLS) club in Miami of which he will be a co-owner.“I go to the World Cup with only one thing that counts - to survive the fi rst round. If I didn’t have confi dence in doing that, I wouldn’t be si ing here.”New Australia head coach Bert van Marwij k speaks in his fi rst press conference since taking the job.

“The time has come to confront our ghost. This is how we prepare for a World Cup. Let’s face Germany in Berlin, the fi rst time we’ve met them since the 7-1. That happened and, once we accept it, it will hurt less. That is the truth. Now we are writing a new chapter.”Brazil head coach Tite on how to deal with Brazil’s humiliating loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-fi nal.

M1 Ireland v Italy: Ireland were part of an astonishing match against France in Round 1. They needed a last-minute drop goal from Johnny Sexton to beat France in Paris 13-15. Italy were solid in the fi rst half against England but then fell apart. Not much seems to have changed and Ireland will win.

M2 Saracens v Newcastle: The playing fi elds are levelled with so many Saracens players on inter-national duty. Newcastle beat Ex-eter when the last round of AVIVA

Premiership fi xtures was played. They may kill another giant but do come in as underdogs.

M3 England v Wales: Despite all the injuries to key English players, they showed they are still the team to beat when knocking over Italy in Rome. Wales were expected to strug-gle against Scotland but proved their doubters wrong, winning 34-7. This should be a great game, play wide.

M4 Cardiff v Cheetahs: Cardiff are having a pre y rough season while the Cheetahs have adapted to north-

ern hemisphere rugby nicely. The Cheetahs have had fewer disruptions and will be fresh, having not played for a few weeks. They may win again.

M5 Scotland v France: Scot-land can’t be as bad as they were last weekend. Back home, against a mercurial French team it becomes a tough match to call. Scotland should be given another chance.

Suggested R240 perm for the Rugby 5 pool this Saturday (pool closes 16:15): M1 = 2; M2 =1, 2, 3,4; M3 = 1, 3, 4; M4 = 3, 4; M5 = 1, 3.

Antonio Conte still wants a full-on clash with Jose Mourinho later this month - and Chelsea bosses won’t try to stop him, according to the British media. Conte is raging at the Manches-ter United manager’s reference to a match-fi xing scandal the Italian was caught up in - and cleared of - when coach of Se-rie B side Siena in 2011. A er the jibe, Conte called his rival a “fake” and a “li le man” be-fore vowing to have a face-off with the Portuguese when the teams meet at Old Traff ord on 25 February. That’s, of course, if Conte is still at Chelsea.

Swarms of locusts pose a threat to Russia’s World Cup because they could a ack pitches, caus-ing a “global scandal“, an ag-riculture ministry offi cial has said. Matches will be played in 12 stadiums in 11 cities. Pyotr Chekmarev, head of the agri-culture ministry’s crop farm-ing department, said the pitch-es could be targeted by locusts during the summer months.

To enham Hotspur broke the Premier League a endance re-cord for the second time this season with a crowd of 81,978 at Wembley Stadium to see them beat Manchester United. Spurs, spending a year at Wembley Sta-dium while their new stadium is built on the site of their old facility, fi rst broke the 10-year-old Premier League a endance record in Round 9 of fi xtures in October with 80,827 fans for their 4-1 win over Liverpool.

BYE BYE SOUTH AFRICA! Last year’s Durban July hero Marinaresco will be joining the Mike de Kock stable for an international campaign. His trainer Candice Bass-Robinson has decided that training the fi ve-year-old herself overseas is not an option. She has one of the biggest stables in Cape Town and a satellite yard adjoining the Sum-merveld training centre in KwaZulu-Natal. She told correspondent Michael Clower: “He goes into quarantine in the middle of the month and will go via Mauritius to Mike de Kock’s yard in Newmarket England. After that nothing has been fi nalised but maybe Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai. He remains in the same ownership (Marsh Shirtliff , Bryn Ressell, Mike Bass and Fred Green) and I will be sorry to see him go.” Marinaresco carried top weight of 60kg to victory in the Durban July and was the fi rst winner of the race trained by a woman. His other triumphs included the Champions Cup at Greyville, Winter Guineas and Winter Classic in the Cape.
