TSS Success Nicole has been invited to the National Mathematics Summer School following an excellent performance in a Mathematical Challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust. The summer school will take place at Woodhouse Grove School in July. The elite one week summer school has been designed to be enough to stimulate around 40 of the UK’s most talented young mathematicians. The schedule includes masterclasses, small group work and team competition. There will also be time for relaxation with evening events such as bowling and a “mathematical melange” in which students can display their musical, dramatic or juggling ability! This achievement is a first for Titus Salt School and places Nicole very clearly at the top of a list of talented mathematicians from previous years. This is a great result for Nicole and is a consequence of her commitment to the subject. These newsletters are testament to the talent, dedication, enthusiasm and expertise of our students who are unstintingly supported by their parents/ carers as well as staff at school. As with the first edition, this second newsletter gives only a small insight to the diversity of achievement at TSS from Science scholarship to Mathematical Challenge; sport and culture to creativity in the community. I am in awe of what our students are capable of; I hope you enjoy reading about them as much as I did. Tommy is one of just five talented students from the UK to have won a scholarship to attend the renowned International Science School in Sydney. With support from the Ogden Trust, this once in a life time trip will see Tommy immersed in a visionary science programme for academically talented Year 12 students. Tommy will attend lectures by leading research scientists, explore the research labs, join in with a wide range of experiments and meet like-minded science mad students from all over the world. Every two years 140 top students from Australia, China, Japan, India, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, the USA and the UK, travel to Sydney for this unforgettable fortnight of science. Mr Reid, Tommy’s Physics teacher said: “We have a crop of extremely strong Physicists at Titus Salt School, many of whom applied for this opportunity. Sadly we could only nominate one to go forward for consideration by the Trust and Tommy’s essay on the development of graphene and its uses was truly exceptional. He thoroughly deserves this experience and it will stand him in great stead next year when he applies for university.” Tommy Dobson, Year 12
