HOW TSUNAMIS FORMTsunamis are very powerful waves from the bottom of the ocean,Tsunamis are created when the tectonic plates of the earth's slip releasing a massive amount of energy into the water/ocean. This energy travels up to the surface displacing water and causes it to rise above the normal sea level. Then gravity pulls it back down which makes the energy ripple out horizontally and a tsunami is created. You may be wondering how high can a tsunami reach well let me tell you. WHERE TSUNAMIS HIT MOST OFTEN

Tsunamis most occur on large bodies of water, Tsunamis are very common near the Pacific also roughly 80% of tsunamis are located by the pacific ocean. Tsunamis are most often in Japan,Chilli Usa and more places.Tsunamis can hit about every single ocean coast line,(tsunamis waves can travel super long) Japan has been hit by about 200 tsunamis with extreme damage.

COOL FACT: tsunamis can even happen in lakes only if there super big, like Lake Michigan they have to be big in order to have a big waves to make a tsunami so they can’t be a tiny lake.

Historic Events of Tsunamis

Tsunamis are very dangerous. There have been a lot of record breaking Tsunamis in the 1700 hundreds to the 2000s. There are 7 of them but I'm only going to name 4 of them. The rank 1 tsunami hit December 26th, 2004. It hit just before 7:00am and formed in the Indian Ocean, in 10 min it hit Sumatra, in 1 hour it reached Thailand, in 2 hours it hit Sri Lanka, in 7 hours it hit coast of east Africa. When it reached the shores it got to 98 feet high.The estimated casualties were 230,210 and more.The rank 2 tsunami formed in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean in 1755. It hit Portugal,Spain, Morocco, and Ireland U.K. It killed over 100,000 people. The rank 3 Tsunami was in 1908, it formed in the Mediterranean ocean.The area it affected was Messina,Italy. This one killed over 103,000 people.

The rank 4 tsunami formed in the Sunda strait,1883 the area it affected was Indonesia and killed 36,000 people. In 1964 a powerful tsunami formed on the coast of Alaska, United States. Even though it was formed by a more powerful earthquake than the 2004 tsunami, it only killed fewer than 131 people. It may be because there were few people living there. The Hawaiian islands, April 1, 1946 a tsunami hit without warning and 159 people, and May 3, 1960 people got a warning but some didn't listen, and 61 people died.

First you'll see bubbling water where the ocean retreats. Like fiss standing on the shore. Also you may see the tide increase its level when it's not supposed to, like in the middle of the day.
