It is the day after the winter solstice. I always look forward to this day as it signals the move towards spring. The days, albeit slowly, start to get longer and the plants start to move. The bare root season kicks in and people are planning for spring. Six weeks and we will start to see the first of this year’s tomatoes in the nurseries. I still think it is too early but for many home gardeners it is ok. Indeed for much of the country it is fine as the big cities no longer get frosts and a lot of the country is almost warm enough for year round production. Then in places like Melbourne many gardeners now have their own mini greenhouses and are keen to get their tomatoes growing. They want to be the first amongst their friends to pick.

We finished our IPPS tour at the start of June and by all reports it was a great success. Our foreign guests all went home with a greater understanding of Australians, our horticulture and our food. Over the two week tour they saw a range of nurseries from small husband and wife to larger production style. What they saw and noticed more than anything was a real passion for plants. They saw this in the nurseries, in the gardens and in the specialist sites like the sugar research station at Mackay and the Passionfruit nursery in Bundaberg. We were in the tropics and saw all our ‘indoor’ plants in the garden. It seemed odd to see Philodendron, Colocasia, Syngonium and Peperomia all growing happily out doors.

Speaking of passion it is interesting to look at what...

Clive’s Comments continued… ...different people do outside work. Of course we live in Melbourne so we have all the footy mad supporters and for

the last four weeks the media has focused on the way the AFL has been treating the supporters. Di and I went to the

RHSV’s gardener’s day out where there were over 400 home gardeners and collectors gathered to meet other plant

people and listen to some leading plant growers and horticulturists. Don and Jennifer and their RHS team do an

amazing job with this day and the rest of what RHS does. Our industry is the better for it.

Also in June, Simon (middle son) undertook a weekend of extreme fitness at the Bright Hurt Camp. A twelve hour

event which pushes the entrant’s fitness, stamina and ability to work in a team. Simon did very well and was part of

one of the lead teams. Something he can be proud of. This is part of a movement around the world of extreme

fitness. From marathon running to trail runs and weekly park runs along with masses of gyms. We are seeing a huge

growth in passionate people who want to be fit and to push their own personal boundaries.

We see and hear about all the negative parts of our community in the daily news and through social media but we

hear little of these passionate people who contribute in so many ways and make the world a better place. They all find

ways to participate and enjoy their passion. We just need more of them to be in the plant sectors. This part of why we

run our Plant Collectors Fairs in spring and autumn. We love to bring together all these collectors, growers and

gardeners to talk and teach and learn and display their chosen plant group. We also try to encourage new gardeners

of all ages to come and see the passion.

We have just had the coldest June day in 35 years and of course some will use that to prove climate change doesn’t

exist and others to prove that it does. All I know is it was very cold with maximum temperature of 8°C and the fog

never lifted. Personally I found it nice as the air was cold but it was dry and there was no wind. I also like it as it

knocks back so many of the bugs. When we have a mild winter we have more bug problems in spring and summer.

We just need some rain in the southern states to make sure we have a good year. The country is looking green but I

suspect the subsoil is still dry and this may have long term effects.

It is time to plan for a busy season and make sure we have lots of new and fresh stock coming through. As an

industry we need to have new varieties to keep interest up but we also need to have the old staples. There are many

plants that have been around for years – for good reason as they are hardy, stable and perform well. So keep warm,

get your plants on the ground and look for the passion in the people around you.
