SAINT MARY OF THE MOUNT PARISH! ! ! PITTSBURGH, PA!

Music “Notes” with Amanda:

Trinity Sunday Reflections Before I begin my reflections about this weekend’s music, I want to take a second and thank all of the music ministers who assisted with last weekend’s Pentecost celebrations. Our 5:00 pm and 9:30 am Masses were particularly spectacular, thanks in large part to our bell choir and adult choirs (respectively). Thank you! (And if you see one of our volunteer music ministers in the congregation, please feel free to talk with them if you liked their role in the Liturgy!) This weekend we transition out of the Easter season and into Ordinary time, but two weekends bridge the gap: Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi Sunday. This weekend (Trinity Sunday) honors the Trinity: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. However, the Gospel seems to continue over from last weekend, as we hear Jesus commissioning the disciples to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:16-20). Musically we reflect the Gospel reading by singing “Go Make of All Disciples” (#769 in the hymnal) as our closing song. The Gospel reads: Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." (Matthew 28:17-20) The verses of “Go Make of All Disciples” are: 1. “Go make of all disciples,” we hear the call, O Lord, that comes from you, our Father, in your eternal Word. Inspire our ways of learning through earnest, fervent payer, and let our daily living reveal you everywhere. 1. “Go make of all disciples,” baptizing in the name of Father, Son and Spirit, from age to age the same. We call each new disciple to follow you, O Lord, redeeming soul and body by water and the Word. 2. “Go make of all disciples,” we welcome your command, “Lo, I am with you always.” We take your guiding hand. The task looms large before us, we follow without fear. In heaven and earth your power shall bring God’s Kingdom here. As you can see, the basis of the entire hymn reflects the Gospel reading we hear today. Verse two even alludes to the overarching celebration of the Trinity we honor this weekend: “baptizing in the name of [the] Father, Son, and [Holy] Spirit.” While it is minimally paraphrased, it reminds us of the calling Jesus has for his disciples – and us! – on this Trinity Sunday.
