- Definition: anything that has mass and volume (takes up space)

• What are some examples of matter?

ELEMENT:• pure substance that can’t be separated into

simpler substance by physical or chemical means. – Examples: Oxygen, Nitrogen

- ATOMS– The smallest part of an element that has the

properties of that element• Composed of: Proton (+), Electron (-), Neutron (no

charge)

COMPOUNDS

• Composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.–Examples: H2O, CO2

• Composed of 2+ elements (same or different) that are joined by chemical bonds– Elements can be the same. Ex: H2, O2, N2

MIXTURES- Definition: A combo of 2+ substances that

aren’t chemically combined.- Characteristics:

- Substances held together by physical forces, not but chemical forces

- Thus, mixtures can be separated via its physical properties

- Types of Mixtures – There are 2 main categories:

1. HOMOGENOUS – molecules that are mixed up in an even distribution

a. SOLUTIONSi. Def: a mixture that appears to be a

single substanceii. Ex: lemonade, sugar water, Kool-aid,

sodaiii. SOLUTE – the substance being dissolvediv. SOLVENT – the substance in which the

solute is being dissolved in.

v. Water is considered a universal solvent, meaning almost everything can

dissolve in it

vi. SOLUBILITY – the maximum amount of solute (in units of grams per

Liter) that can dissolve in a solvent- Saturated solution – the max

amount of solute has been dissolved into the solvent

- Unsaturated solution – less than the maximum amount of solute has been

dissolved into the solventvii. Particles in a solution do not scatter

light

b. Colloids

i. Def: a mixture of tiny particles that are bigger than those in a solution, but smaller than those in a suspensionii. Do NOT settle out over timeiii. Can scatter lightiv. Ex: mayonnaise, milk, gelatin, whipped
