Go Blue for Autism We will be celebrating World Autism Awareness Day on Thursday 17th May. Autism is a complex, lifelong developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to communicate, interact with others and cope in everyday situations. It is important that as a school community, we acknowledge and support the students and families in our school who have autism in their lives. All students will participate in some activities in conjunction with the students and staff from K/6C, K/6A and K/6T and the canteen have organised a special ‘blue’ themed lunch special. Further details about this are later in the newsletter. Funds raised from the special lunch will go to supporting the students in our school with autism.

School Maintenance The tree maintenance program will be completed this week. There are a number of trees that were removed due to safety concerns, as well as some trimming of branches.

Some turf was laid in the playground of the support unit over the weekend. This completes the works associated with the installation of the demountable building.

Public Works are due to commence the installation of a ramp at the front entrance of the support unit and replace a section of the adjacent undercover walkway. The existing toilet facilities will be refurbished to include a shower, changetable facilities and storage. These works will provide better access to facilities for the students in these classes and for the students across the school. This project is expected to take 6-8 weeks, so some students will be working in a different learning space at times. Further details about these changes will be communicated to families as soon as possible.

Thanks to funds raised from the P&C, work will commence around the 24th May to resurface the current soccer field to create a new, even surface for our students to enjoy sport and physical education activities on.

During the holidays, Maree Turner and a team of helpers installed a green house in the garden area. This was funded by a grant and will be a great addition to our environmental program. This week during the planting day, the students will learn about the use of the greenhouse and will

participate in the next season’s planting. We are very thankful for the volunteers who have helped with this project.

Student Activities and Achievements The zone cross country team competed at Belmont and the school choir competed at ChoralFest. We wish both these groups well.

The StarStruck dancers attended their first practice today in preparation for Starstruck 2018.

Yesterday some students from K/6T, K/6A and K/6C attended a Bocce Competition at Newcastle High School. The students had a wonderful day and enjoyed this opportunity. Our Year 5 students were a little weary when they returned on Friday afternoon from the Great Aussie Bush Camp. All students had a wonderful time and received a special mention from the camp staff about their excellent behaviour and participation. Well done Year 5! Thank you to Miss Harris and Ms Nicholson for their time organising this activity and for their time at camp with the students.

This week we welcome the Gee family to the CEPS community. We hope you enjoy your time with us. Congratulations to the Beveridge family who have welcomed a beautiful baby girl to their family during the holidays.

Have a wonderful week everyone.

Borrowing has already started, so remember to bring your library bags next week.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is well under way at our school with tubs of books being put into each classroom. Stage Two and Stage Three students need to read 20 books altogether – 15 from the given list and 5 of personal choice. Early Stage One and Stage One students need to experience at least 25 books from the K-2 list and 5 of personal choice.

This is a wonderful programme which really promotes a love of reading! So, to all our students, BE IN IT!!

TREE OF VALUES This fortnight we will highlight our school value Participation.

Participation involves being a proactive and productive individual and group member, having pride in and contributing to the social and economic wealth of the community and the nation. Last week we started our new term back at school by talking about how a smile can be the first step towards proactively beginning to participate in a range of situations. As students grow they become more aware of their facial expressions and how they can impact relationships and play. This week we will remind students of the importance of taking turns in the classroom and playground and how this can positively influence participation. We closed last term with a very successful DTT (Doing Things Together) cooperative activity session, originally planned for Harmony Day. The students are to be congratulated and commended for their outstanding behaviour and commitment to demonstrating our school values through these activities. Teachers witnessed students taking turns,

participating happily, striving for excellence, cooperating, demonstrating leadership and having lots of fun. Well done CEPS students, you are amazing!

We look forward to your continued support of our values program this term. Mrs Lloyd, Mrs Bell & Mrs Bailey Tree of Values Coordinators

GREAT AUSSIE BUSH CAMP

On Wednesday 2nd of May 2018 Year 5 went to the Great Aussie Bush Camp. We left school at 9:30am and got there at 11am. As soon as they got there, we met our instructors, Luke & Lisa. Then we were sorted into tents. Soon after that we were sorted into 2 groups and went to lunch, we had hamburgers.

After lunch, group 1 went to the dual flying fox. It was a giant flying fox. Then we went to archery, where we learnt how to use a bow and arrow. Then we had showers and went to dinner. For dinner we had spaghetti bolognaise and cordial. It was delicious. Soon after, we went to the giant swing. It was awesome and scary! Later we had chocolate milk and choc-chip cookies and listened to an instructor called Shannon tell us a story that she made up. Then we got in our PJs, brushed our teeth and went to bed.

Thursday 3rd May, at great Aussie bush camp : 2nd day We woke up to a freezing morning so we had to get changed into the warmest clothes we had. Then we walked down to the dine/food hall. We all got to choose if we wanted hot or cold food or both. Then we split up into two groups. Group 1 did crate climbing & group 2 did archery. The point of crate climbing is you need a crate monster, a crate climber a belay captain and a belay team. There were 7 people In each group. The belay team had to pull a rope every time the climbers took a step whilst the crate monster was stacking the crates for the climber to climb onto. The point of archery is to hit the bulls eye if you hit anything else that was still amazing! The first thing we did was pick country names for our teams. Then we had to play a game that you bake a cake. So with the cake game you have to hit 2 white, 1 blue and 1 red. 2nd if you hit the black you have burnt your cake!!

After our first activity everyone came to snow cones. We had to get our own cups and Lisa scooped out ice into our cups and we got our own flavouring.

At lunch we had sandwiches. We had a choice of devon, chicken meat or ham. We had red, green and orange cordial. We were there for a while. Most people had 2 sandwiches.

We then went out of camp, drove a bus to Mt Yaccaba. We had to walk along a beach, then we climbed Yaccaba, but we made a wrong turn so we had to go all the way down again and then went up a massively steep hill and the people at the back which was Lily, Polly, Evelina, Ruby and Zoe saw a massive goana and Zoe was so scared she screamed, then she ran up and told Luke (our leader along with Lisa) Then we stopped and went all the way down and did a massive long walk along the beach. Luckily Luke said we could have a swim in the beach. We also had a sandcastle comp and we all had apples. After we all made our way back to the bus and drove back to camp. Our legs were really sore!!

For dinner that night we had chicken and rice and we had some drinks of cordial. We lined up for a while and to be honest it was way better than the spaghetti.

At Games night we played Ninja. Everyone goes in a circle and the leader will say 3,2,1 and you have to strike a Ninja pose. The leader will then say 3,2,1 and you have to try to hit the person next to you and to get their arm out if they flinch they are out.

Mouse Trap where there are 3 people with a partner and they put their arms up so people can go through them. You go in a circle and start to run through them while the leader is clapping. When they stop clapping the 3 group bring their arms down and if you get caught you join them and keep going until the last person.

We all had a great time.

Over the holidays we assembled and installed an amazing greenhouse thanks to a Lake Macquarie City Council Sustainability Grant. A huge thank you goes to Charl, Steve and Niclas who gave their time during the holidays to come and decipher translated instructions to put the greenhouse together. They have done an amazing job and the greenhouse is ready to house a whole range of seedlings which will be planted over the coming weeks. Thanks also to Kasia and Rebecca for keeping our plants watered during the holidays.

The garden beds are ready for the school planting day this Wednesday 9 May. Our planting day will involve more than just planting seedlings this time and have a variety of outdoor activities for our children to get back in touch with nature. Please pack your child's gardening gloves and insect repellent for the day.

Thanks for your support.
