STAT: Lexington Leads Kentucky in StatsAmerica’s Innovation IndexLexington has received national rankings demonstrating the city’s excellencein entrepreneurship, including Top 10 Best Cities for Entrepreneurs by thePenny Hoarder (2018) and #8 City with the Lowest Startup Costs by SmartAsset (2017). Now, according to the StatsAmerica’s Innovation Index 2.0, theLexington-Fayette metro is also the leading Metropolitan Statistical Area(MSA) for innovation in Kentucky. For more than a decade, the Central Kentucky Policy Group hasserved as a regional voice for state and federal public policy issues thatadvance economic development, job creation and quality of life. Thegroup consists of influential business and community leaders from var-ious sectors within nine counties in Central Kentucky. The group’s pol-icy priorities for business growth in the region this year include pensionand tax reform, ensuring a qualified and skilled workforce, addressingthe opioid and drug epidemic across Kentucky, finding long-term solu-tions to sustainable and reliable funding for transportation projects crit-ical to economic development, strategic economic developmentincentives, expanding and upgrading broadband networks, legal liabilityreform, affordable energy, unemployment insurance reform, and clari-fying arbitration statutes.

A variety of events and brief-ings are held throughout the yearto connect regional leaders withelected officials. On December18th, a Legislative AppreciationBreakfast presented by the Ken-tucky Coal Association was held,during which state legislators dis-cussed issues important to thebusiness community and gave apreview to the upcoming Legisla-tive Session in Frankfort.

On January 15th,Commerce Lexingtonand the Central KentuckyPolicy Group hosted aluncheon with key re-gional business leadersand local officials (May-ors and Judge Execu-tives) in the nine-county region. Since there are several new officials inthe region, including the Mayor of Lexington, the purpose of the eventwas relationship-building and beginning a conversation about commonissues impacting economic development in the region such as workforcedevelopment, infrastructure funding challenges and drug abuse.

Leadership Lexington Youth Learn About Impact of Local Arts CommunityThe Leadership Lexington Youth Pro-

gram’s Arts Day took place on January 9thwith an objective to raise our awarenesson the presence of art in various social as-pects as well as encourage youth partici-pation in communal art experiences.

We travelled to Latitude Art Commu-nity, a place for those with disabilities tocreate art, encouraging all to recognizetheir unique life’s narrative. After chattingwith some of the artists, I was dumb-founded by the talent and creativity dis-played in their artworks.

We then proceeded to Nomi Design,where its owner Matthew Brooks intro-duced us to a different perspective of artinvolving balancing the relationships between colorsin order to manipulate space. Right next door was theInternational Book Project, where we learned its mis-sion of promoting education around the globe andhelped fill bookshelves for local refugee and immigrantfamilies.

Afterwards, we rode the bus back to Lexington Chil-dren’s Theatre to hear from Drs. Everett McCorvey andTedrin Blair Lindsay of UK Opera Theatre. We enjoyedopera performances from three UK Opera students

and got to know more about the beauty of opera andmusical theater.

We ended the day with group presentations usingdifferent forms of theater to illustrate current social is-sues. The debrief activity led by Lexington Children’sTheatre was challenging yet inspiring, leaving us toponder how art relates to our community and com-pelling us to make a difference. I loved Arts Day, es-pecially Latitude Arts Community, where we learnedthat art could gift us with unlimited potential.

The theme for the January session of Leadership Lex-ington was Health and Human Services. The morningsession included several guest speakers who spoke ontopics that included mental health, the opioid epidemic,public health and safety, and the future of healthcare inLexington and across the state. The class also took partin a radio show as Helen Highwater (Nan Plummer) in-terviewed Dr. Kraig Humbaugh the Commissioner ofHealth, for her radio show called Safety First.

After a quick session of chair yoga and lunch, ourclass split into smaller groups and headed out to tourlocal agencies and non-profits that focus on some as-pect of community health. Small groups toured TheHope Center and learned about the work of UrbanLeague, the Chrysalis House and Family Care Center, Vi-sually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) and Lexing-ton Hearing and Speech Center, Community ActionCouncil and Opportunity for Work and Learning (OWL),the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass andCourt Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Green-house 17 and KVC Behavioral Health, Habitat for Hu-manity and Mission Lexington, and Big Brothers BigSisters and Partners for Youth.

Our class found the day informative and our end ofthe day reports all had the same theme. We were previ-ously unaware of many of the organizations in Lexing-

ton that focused on our community’s health, but wewere appreciative of their work and service to Lexington.The discussion continued at social hour, as classmatesdiscussed ways they could get involved and support theagencies we had toured during the day. It was a greatday, spent learning about how leaders and communityagencies are working to support a happy and healthyLexington.
