While my time as Com-merce Lexington Inc. BoardChair is coming to an end,I’d like to reflect on whathas been a fantastic yearand a wonderful experiencefor me. As many of you al-ready know, Commerce Lex-ington Inc. is one of themost engaged chambers inthe country – whether it’sadvancing a policy issue atthe local, state or nationallevels of government, part-nering with other organiza-tions to solve a problem inour community, or workingwith so many of you throughout our region to helpcompanies relocate or expand here. The mission of Commerce Lexington Inc. is “to

represent our members, creating the environmentand opportunity for economic prosperity and qual-ity living in Central Kentucky.” We live and breatheit each day. Our organization is constantly workingto provide businesses with the tools they need tosucceed through access to financing for small busi-nesses, educational and networking events, lead-ership development opportunities, marketing andsponsorship options, business expansion and re-tention services, minority business development, entrepreneurial support, and much more.Among my favorite events to attend throughout

the year are the many ribbon cuttings, ground-breakings and grand openings. I love seeing theexcitement and pride that people have for theirbusiness. There’s a lot that goes into building abusiness, and Commerce Lexington Inc. is pleasedto be there every step of the way to assist in anyway that we can.

In March, I had the opportunity to present asession on career sculpting during the annualEMERGE Conference, which saw a record atten-dance of more than 450 people. It was an honorto be able to talk about my experiences and lessonslearned throughout my career to so many emerg-ing professionals and entrepreneurs. I wasamazed at the energy and enthusiasm at that con-ference, and I am confident that Lexington andCentral Kentucky are in good hands for future gen-erations.

During our Leadership Visit to Boise, Idaho inMay, a delegation of about 180 people looked athow that city has overcome its isolated locationand turned it into a competitive advantage for busi-ness and industry. I was impressed by how Boise

While in Bowling Green, participants studied keyinitiatives related to workforce development, K-12 ed-ucation, business attraction, downtown development, tourism and public-private partnerships. Then, the delegation visited the Gatton Academyof Mathematics and Science on the campus of WKUto connect with students and learn more about one ofthe top high schools in the nation. In downtown Bowl-ing Green, the group explored areas within the city’ssuccessful tax increment financing district, which hasseen the downtown transform into a destination forbusiness, entertainment, housing and retail. The walk-ing tour concluded at Hickory & Oak, a new restaurantand bar. Later, at the Bowling Green Chamber of Com-merce, participants listened to a panel discussion that

Winner’s Circle CampaignNearing the Finish Lineleaders have taken the city’s greatest challenges and worked together to transform

Boise into one of the fastest-growing and most livable regions in America. Thesetrips not only enable us to see what works and doesn’t work in other communities, but also to look inward at the challenges facing Lexington now and in the future. Our Kentucky Regional Tour to Bowling Green in late October gave us a chance

to experience another great city in our Commonwealth, learn how leaders therehave created a vibrant downtown area, and explore collaborative possibilities be-tween the two cities. While there, we also studied key initiatives related to workforcedevelopment, K-12 education, business attraction, tourism and public-private part-nerships.

Here in Lexington, big improvements continue to occur all over the city, butnone of it can happen without collaboration and strong relationships. Our eco-nomic development partnership with the City of Lexington and the University ofKentucky has streamlined the process for clients and entrepreneurs looking to growtheir business here. We have been able to solve many of our biggest challenges byworking together to find common ground, and we will need to continue to do thatin order to focus on issues like affordable housing, attracting and retaining talent, and fighting the opioid epidemic.

I intend to continue working with other healthcare providers and public safetyindividuals to promote wellness in all areas of our community. We have made greatstrides in the area of health and wellness, but we still have much work to do.

Finally, I want to thank Bob Quick and his team for their support this year, aswell as immediate past chair Carla Blanton for her guidance and mentorship. I knowthat Jeff Koonce will be a great leader for the board in 2019, and I look forward tosupporting him. It has been an honor and privilege to represent my industry andhometown of Lexington as the CLX Board Chair this year. I can’t wait to see whatthe future holds for Lexington and Central Kentucky.

The Leadership Lexington YouthProgram’s Health and Human Serv-ices Day was filled with talks aboutpersonal experiences, life choices, and societal changes. The earlymorning started with a discussionwith J.J. Housley (UK HealthCare)and Lexington Council Member KevinStinnett.

Then, we listened to a personaltestimony from Alex Elswick, co-founder of Voices of Hope, who cre-ated the nonprofit after his troubleswith drug abuse. His story was trulyinspirational to all of us. Our captiva-tion with the speakers continued aswe heard from Dr. Fareesh Kanga, Di-rector of Psychiatry at HealthFIRSTBluegrass, finding out how we canpersonally help other students withmental health issues.

Later, we took a tour around the new facilities in theUniversity of Kentucky hospital and learned how contri-butions to events like Dance Blue have been able to cre-

ate better amenities for patients. Dur-ing the day, the conversations alsobecame more serious as we heardfrom Rob Perez, Co-Founder of DV8Kitchen, who explained the negativerepresentation of people in the work-force who have a past criminalrecord. These discussions encour-aged us to try and find solutions tothis problem.

We ended the day learning abouthow important communication is be-tween employers and employees, dis-covering that teamwork is keybetween leaders. Lisa Deaton Greerand Chase Hall planned an amazingday for the Leadership LexingtonYouth class to explore health andhuman services. We were able to lookthrough many perspectives of people

from our community. I personally learned so much aboutwhat career opportunities are available to me, why thehealth sector is so important to our region, and how theopioid epidemic has taken a toll on society.

Education Day was an eye-opening experience for the Lead-ership Class. We started the daybright and early at Bryan StationHigh School. The highlight of theday for the class was learningabout the Academies of Lexingtonat Bryan Station. The Academymodel meets the student wherethey are in their life, equity. Thestudents have the ability to learnabout career pathways. Theychoose a pathway prior to theirsophomore year and are able toimmerse themselves in that careerpathway over the course of three years. Business part-ners have the opportunity to connect with the acade-mies to ensure that a pipeline of viable employablestudents are prepared for the workforce.

The Bryan Station Ambassadors took us on a tourof the school, and it was apparent that the studentsand staff took great pride in their school. As a leaderin the community, I look forward to seeing the impactof the Academy model. Leadership starts at the top

and to see Principal James McMillian engage with thestudents and staff highlighted why the school is sosuccessful. His leadership and passion for the schoolis impeccable.

Later, the class visited the University of Kentuckyand heard about the UK LEADS Program, food inse-curity issues on college campuses, and mental healthand wellness options for students. Thank you to thesponsors and coordinators who made our EducationDay Session possible.
