    CHAPTER1

    INTRODUCTION

    A. BackgroundIn grammar, conditional sentence are sentence discussing factual implications or

hypothetical situation and their consequences. Language use a variety of conditional

sentence constructions and verb forms ( such as the conditional mood ) to form such

    sentence.

Full conditional sentence contain two clauses : the condition or protasis, and the

    consequence or apodosis.

If it rains ( condition), ( then ) the picnic will be cancelled ( consequences ).

Syntactically, the conditional is the subordinate clause, and the consequence is the

main clause. However, the properties of the entire sentence are primarily determined by

the properties of the protasis or condition ( its tense and degree of factualness ).

    B. Limitation of the study

What is conditional sentence ? What is function of conditional sentence ? What is type of conditional sentence ?

    C. The significance of study

    CHAPTER 2

    DISCUSSION

    CONDITIONALSENTENCE

Conditional sentence have two parts, such as clauses and main clause. In sentence

if it rains I shall stay at home . if it rains is clauses, and I shall stay at home is main

    clause.

There are three types of the conditional sentence which each contains different tense.

    A. Conditional Sentence Type 1

    1. In conditional sentence this type, verb forms in clause subordinate is present tense,

while verb forms in main clause subordinate is future simple. If clause can in place at the

front and rear, without changing the meaning.

    Example :

He will buy a bicycle, if he gets the money.

You will miss the train, if you came late.

If she know it, she will tell us.

This sentence state that the type of activities in clauses very likely to happened. Need

to be understood that the meaning of conditional sentence is present tense or future tense.

    2. Variation basic shaped

    a) Variation of the main clauseBeside from shaped if + present + future, can used :

    If + present + may/ might ( to demonstrate the possibility ).

Example : if the rain gets heavier the rice fields may/might be flooded .

  • 7/31/2019 Tugas Ade Yundari

    6/12

If + present + may or can.Example : if your documents are in order you may/can leave once.

If + present + must, should ( command statement, request or advice ).

Example : if you want to lose weight you must/should eat less bread .

If + present + another present tense

Example : if you heat ice it turns to water .

    b) Variation of the clausesBeside from if + present tense, there are :

If + present continuous to demonstrate activity now or will come

Example : if you are waiting for a bus, youd better join the queue.

    If + present perfect

Example : if you has written the letter Ill post it.

    B. Conditional sentence type 2

    1. In conditional sentence type 2, verb of clauses in the past tense, and verb of mainclause in the conditional shape.

    Example :

If he know it, he would tell us.

If she had much money she would buy a car.

If someone tried to blackmail me I would tell the police.

    2. Conditional sentence type 2 used :

  • 7/31/2019 Tugas Ade Yundari

    7/12

    a) Supposition is contrary to the fact that there.Example :

If I got up early I wouldnt be late for class.

If he were rich he would build a large house.

    b) We dont expect any activity that occurs in subordinate clauses.Example : if a thief came into my room at night Id scream.

Some clauses can mean double and to avoid the use arrangement were/was + infinitive

instead of conditional sentence type 2 :

If he/she /it were is considered a form which is more correct than if he/she/it was.

If he were to resign..= if he resigned.

If I were to succeed.= if I succeeded.

    3. Variation basic shape

    a) Variation of clausesMight or could can used instead of would.

Example : if you tried again you would succeed.

Shaped of continuous conditional can used apart form of simple conditional.

Example : Peter is on holiday , he is touring Italy. If I were on holiday I would/might be

    touring italy too.

    b) Variation of main clause

Apart form if + past tense, we can used :

    If + past continuous.

  • 7/31/2019 Tugas Ade Yundari

    8/12

Example : if my car was working I would/could drive you to the station.

    If +past perfect

    C. Conditional Sentence Type 3

    1. In conditional sentence this type, verb of clauses shape past perfect tense, and verb of main clause perfect conditional.

Example : if I had known that you were coming I would have met you at the airport.

    2. Variation basic shape

    a) In addition to would can used could or might.Example : if we had found him earlier we could have save his life.

    b)

Continuous forms can also be used :

Example : At the time of the accident I was sitting in the black of the car,

because Toms little boy was sitting beside him in front. If Toms boy had not been there I

would have been sitting in front.

    c) In clauses can also used past perfect continuous .Example : I was wearing a seat bell. If I hadnt been wearing one Id have

    been seriously injured .
