Over the years, Tuolumne County, with its many attractions, hasbecome more and more popular as a vacation playland. Peoplecome from all over the world to view the beauty of our landscapeand relish the history of the Gold Rush era.

As locals, we sometimes take for granted this wonderful place inwhich we live. It’s always nice to pause, stop and think about thisbeautiful place and the lifestyle we all enjoy.

From Yosemite National Park to the Stanislaus National Forest,outdoor recreation abounds in Tuolumne County. When itcomes to history, Columbia State Park is a preserved Gold Rushtown that still thrives with local businesses, and in Jamestown,another active Gold Rush town, Railtown 1897 State Park keepsalive the history the railroad made during the early 1800s withtrain rides and Engine Number 3, the movie star locomotive.

Businesses of all types and sizes exist here in Tuolumne County.Most popular is the “mom and pop” operation, which is a smallstorefront with few employees operated by the owners. There areentrepreneurs that have started their own small business ofmanufacturing to see it grow to providing products in 16different countries. From there, larger retailers are evident withthe likes of Walmart, Lowe’s and Kohl’s stores. The high-techindustry is not to be left out—Tuolumne County is home to acompany that manufactures heating devices for computer chipsand a software company that sells all over the world.

Once known for mineral extraction of gold and the resource oftimber, changes have diminished these roles in the localeconomy—not to say they are forgotten. Gold is now arecreational activity for visitors as they pan in local streams forthe rich, bright yellow nuggets that still flow. The forestcontinues to grow trees, and more and more it is being realizedthat local timber production puts many people to work ratherthan buying lumber from outside the country.

Education in the community is a source of pride for residents asour schools always perform above state and federal levels. Tocomplement elementary and high schools, ColumbiaCommunity College provides two years of college classes in oneof the most beautiful campuses in the state.

Tuolumne County was discoveredin the early part of summer in 1848when a party of Philadelphianminers came toWoods Creek. It is

said that the countryside was one of the mostpicturesque in the world. Woods Creek wasnamed after their leader Reverend JamesWoods. Others in the party were JamesSavage, J.H. Rider and Charles Bassett. Theywere searching for gold, which was plentifulin the first mining settlement of WoodsCrossing. In fact, it was so plentiful that wordspread quickly, bringing immigrants of everynationality including a group ofMexicanminers who founded the Sonorian Camp.The inhabitants of the area, which would beknown as Sonora, were strictly of Spanishdecent until the arrival of the first Americans,Keeler and R.S. Ham, who arrived in thespring of 1849.

In August of 1848 a San Franciscan lawyer,Colonel James, moved to Woods Creek, andJamestown was founded. Colonel Jamesbecame deep in debts he could not pay,which incurred such ill will of his neighborsthat upon his departure, the name ofJamestown was dropped as revenge.Although known for a short time as“American Camp,” the name proved to betoo long. The people were used to “JimTown,” and the name Jamestown waseventually revived. This was the same year inwhich Judge Tuttle arrived inMormonGulch and built the first log cabin in thecounty. This cabin became the nucleus of thevillage that would come to be known asTuttletown. Neither of the latter were asnotable as Jackass Gulch, a name which theaccidental loss of a long-eared animalcontributed. Despite the name, Jackass Gulchimmediately took rank as one of the richestdiggings yet struck. Lumps of gold weighingseveral ounces were a common occurrence,and it is said that two of the earliest

prospectors, Major Means and his brotherJulius, took out $10,000 worth of gold in aclaim of just 100 feet. They also discovered aquartz vein that yielded two-thirds of itsweight in gold.

Numerous discoveries took place in the latterpart of 1848, and the county rapidly filledwith seekers of hidden treasures. Prospectingwas now abundant and new places werediscovered almost daily. With a population ofabout 500, the mortality rate was great,especially among the Mexican population,and it was with the idea of ending suchsuffering that the hospital was built andmaintained. The first drugstore in Sonora,Dr. Strothers, opened in the fall of 1849 inthe vicinity of Bassett’s Camp or near thepresent location of City Hotel.

The favorite day for bartering and trade wasSunday. Sonora’s streets were thronged withminers in town for their mail and purchasingsupplies. It is said that on these days, thenumber of people in town could not havebeen less than 10,000.

InMarch of 1850, the diggings in Columbiawere discovered by a group ofMexicans fromSantiago Hill. These men were seen by aparty of Americans, Dr. Thaddeus Hildrithand his brother George, JohnWalker, WilliamJones and Alexander Carson. Having beeninformed the place was rich, they stayed to trytheir luck. Finding the result beyond theirgreatest expectations, they locatedpermanently at their new discovery.Wonderful stories were circulated, whichspread into the most remote mining regions.The result: an abundance of new discoveries.The trails were now crowded with men. Oneof the first to come toColumbia was CaptainAvent, who had thegood fortune to takeout 2.5 pounds of goldon his first day’s workand another 2.5 on thesecond day. After that,he averaged 12 to 15ounces daily. Bassettcame from Sonora andlocated on the northside of the creek,building corrals for

cattle and sheep. He also opened a store,combining it with a restaurant, butcher shopand dairy.

July 4, 1850 brought the first issue of theSonora Herald, the first newspaper publishedin the California mines. In May of 1851, theHerald announced that the census of thecounty was nearly completed and thepopulation would prove to be between18,000 and 20,000. About this same time,Martin Arnold and Co.’s stage line wasestablished, making daily trips betweenSonora and Stockton.

From 1900 to the early 1920s, goldproduction in the county was on the samehigh level, but with lack of materials and laborduringWorld War I, Tuolumne County hadbeen forced to see the closing of some of therichest gold producers in the world. With thedecrease of gold mining, the county rapidlycame to be known as a great lumber producer.Some of the finest strands of Ponderosa,Sugar Pine, White Fir and Douglas Fir in thestate are found here in Tuolumne County.S.S. Bradford and George W. Hale operatedon the earliest lumber mills.

Although natural resource production hasdeclined over the last several years, tourism istaking on a more important role in the localeconomy. Now estimated to be the largestindustry, the tourism service sector willcontinue to expand as people enjoy all thevarious recreation activities available inTuolumne County.

The proceeding is just a synopsis of thebeginnings of a county that boasts beautifulscenery and a rich history.

The new BoulderCreek Canyon Ski Area has expandedDodge Ridge with its capacity to serve15,700 skiers per hour with 12 lifts on 60Green, Blue and Black Diamond trails.

For Nordic skiers, the quiet and pristinewhite forest trails provide the best inoutdoor adventure and a chance to renewthe mind, body and spirit.

Winter sports in Tuolumne County cater toevery age, and for the youngsters (as well asthe young at heart) Leland High SierraSnow Play Park offers five acres for tubes,saucers and clean mountain air.

Real estate in Tuolumne County isa major industry. It employs morethan 270 active agents in morethan 45 real estate offices. The

During the spring and fall, the StrawberryMusic Festival brings folks from around theworld to hear folk and country music atbeautiful Camp Mather near Yosemite. In

Inthe winter, the St. James Concert Series andthe Winter Gold Concert Series bringorchestral and vocal performances toSonora, and Columbia College hosts theColumbia College Jazz Series. We also havethe Symphony of the Sierra, the MotherLode Brass and Reed Band and theCommunity Choir to add to the rich varietyof musical offerings throughout the year.

Columbia College also has much to offer,with dance and musical reviews and anindependent and foreign film series.

The Sonora Opera Hall hosts many specialevents and the Mother Lode Fairgroundsregularly provide cultural andentertainment opportunities, such as theannual Christmas Fair and Craft Show,Mother Lode Fair and Rodeo and dancesand auctions for nonprofit fundraisers.

And if that’s not enough, the U.S. ForestService also presents concerts, dramaticperformances and interpretive programs attheir campgrounds and park venues. Someof our local communities sponsor a farmers’market featuring fresh, locally grownproduce, fresh baked bread and homemadecondiments. Local crafts are also featured.

The Central Sierra Arts Council is the hubof the county for connecting artists andaudiences. In April,the Council holds an “open entry” fine artshow. May brings the Sonora Art Trails,which is an open studio tour of local artists.October brings a ceramic show/sale, and inNovember, a panel-judged photographyshow. The council also offers a series ofprofessional workshops and demonstrationsthroughout the year, and many of our localartists and musicians are available forprivate instruction. You can also make a visitto the George Post Gallery in downtownSonora, which features exhibitions by localartists and artisans.

Tuolumne County is in thesouthern portion of the SierraFoothills viticulture region.Vineyards are found from 1,000

to 4,000 feet in elevation. Most commercialvineyards are planted in red varietals.However, some whites can be found.

The growing season consists of warm tohot daytime temperatures with cooling atnight. The rocky and dry soils challenge thevines to work hard to nurture the preciousfruit. These conditions, combined with thepractice of limiting production per acre, arevery favorable for the production of highquality fruit for the making of premiumwines.

Some of the earliest vineyards in Californiacan be traced to the foothills on the westernslope of the Sierra Nevada Mountainswhere wineries sprung up in the middle1800s.

There are seven commercial vineyards inTuolumne County. They are as follows:

There are currently three tasting rooms inTuolumne County.

Several wineries are located in CalaverasCounty, just to the north of Tuolumne.One of the largest is Ironstone Vineyardswith tasting room and gourmetdelicatessen. The facility is located inMurphy’s.

Tuolumne County provideshealthcare services responsive tocommunity needs. Area medicalservices serve a foothill

community of approximately 57,000:approximately 20 percent of that populationis 65+. Consequently, healthcare servicesare many and diversified in order to meet

the needs of all age groups. Most medicalspecialties are included in our largephysician population.

Sonora Regional Medical Center providesacute-care services for the county. Thehospital’s emergency room is staffed withphysicians 24 hours a day. There are five

walk-in clinics: twoin Sonora, one inEast Sonora, one inGroveland and oneoffering services atTuolumne CountyHealth Department.Rural Indian Health& Dental Clinics arealso available.

Long-term care andpsychiatricoutpatient care areprovided by

Tuolumne General Medical Facility. Aspecialized Birth Center and Cancer Centerare provided by Sonora Regional MedicalCenter.

The Family Health and Wellness Center,Dental Clinic, Diagnostic Imaging Center,Wound Care Center, Cardiac Rehabilitationand two skilled-nursing facilities operateunder the direction of Sonora RegionalMedical Center. Other skilled-nursingservices can be procured at Avalon HealthCare, which is a freestanding skilled facilityfor those requiring long-term care.

Adult Day Health Care is available inSonora. Such a program offers a variety ofhealth, therapeutic and social services toserve the specialized needs of those at riskof being placed in nursing homes. Busservice and a hot meal program are includedin the daily cost.

Suchfacilities provide non-medical, out-of-homecare to those requiring personal servicessuch as help in bathing and grooming,observation of a confused client andassistance with making and keeping medicaland dental appointments. Home health and hospice services aredelivered by Sonora Regional MedicalCenter to persons needing health servicesin their homes. Tuolumne County is home toapproximately 6,500 studentswho attend public schools. Theseyoung people have special talents,

interests and needs as diverse as the countyin which they live.

Tuolumne County has a Superintendent ofSchools Office, which provides county-wide leadership and support, contributingto a strong instructional program fromkindergarten through high school.The county is served by 11 public schooldistricts, including two high school districtsand one unified school district, along withone community college. In addition, thereare four private schools with enrollmentsover 50. Enrollment figures in the publicschools vary from year to year in relation tocurrent employment opportunities withinthe county.

The Special Education needs of Tuolumnestudents are currently served through theSELPA office, which operates under theTuolumne County Superintendent ofSchools Office.

Families looking to relocate to TuolumneCounty are urged to visit both elementaryand high school campuses in the countyand to visit administrators and review theprograms and classes each school has tooffer to assist them with their relocationchoices.

Columbia CollegeColumbia College is a public communitycollege that offers a comprehensive generaleducation leading to an associate degree

and/or an occupational certificate or transferto a four-year institution.

In the summer of 2005, 3,500 students wereenrolled at the college with 64 percentbeing residents of Tuolumne County. Thecollege was founded in 1968 and is part ofthe Yosemite Community College District.It is located on more than 200 acres offorest land adjacent to Columbia StateHistoric Park.
