“Submarine” launched at Culebra!STRI launched a discoveryroom “The submarine voyage:A journey for all the senses” onWednesday, November 15 atPunta Culebra Nature Center.Video-games, photographs,underwater videos, marineorganisms displayed in differentforms and an underwatersupermarket—contained in amake-believe 100-feet longsubmarine, one of Culebra'sold bunkers—offer visitors acorner of science withtouchable exhibits and alearning experience with lots offun! The “Submarine” alsoincludes a Bookstore.

The “submarine” is a brainchildof Lidia Valencia and InézCampbell (first and secondfrom the left in the centerphoto), who received supportfrom STRI’s scientific staff andvisitors, technical staff,administrators, OFEO, andpersonnel from the Panama

Canal Authority. The projectwas directed by John Christyand Stanley Heckadon.Audiovisual material wasprovided by ANCON, AperturaFilms, Fundación PROMAR,Avi Kapler, Andrea Profili,Token Studio, and STRI's JuanMaté and Edgardo Ochoa.Design and Construction wasconducted by STRI's OFEO,in collaboration with MCArquitectura, L-Mentos, JamieWalker, and CONELSA.

Panamanian deputies visit Bocas del ToroPanama's National Assemblydeputies of the Development,Environment and PopulationCommission held a session onBocas del Toro Island, onNovember 7 . After theirth

session, they met with STRIofficials at the Bocas del ToroResearch Station, city mayorEligio Binns, and members ofthe World Conservation Union(IUCN) and The NatureConservancy, to discuss localefforts for biodiversityconservation.

Deciduous tropical

forests experience

marked seasonal shifts

of two key resources,

light and water.

Seasonal variation in

these resources is

likely to strongly

influence the

establishment, growth

and survival of

light-demanding and

shade-tolerant species

differentially owing to

differences in their

physiology.

Because direct light is

low but frequency of

sunflecks is the

highest in the

understory, a quick and

efficient use response

of the sunflecks might

be critical in

understory survival.

Although light

increases during the

dry season, a time

when understory plants

might face the most

favorable conditions

for carbon gain, the

question remains; to

what extend can plants

take advantage of

increased light

availability in the dry

season given the

reduced water

availability at this time?

Science, Omar Lopez,

temporal variation in

light and water

availability influence

photosynthetic

performance

(maximum assimilation

rate, sunfleck use

response/efficiency and

rate of induction) in

small saplings of six

focal Barro Colorado

Island (BCI) species

with contrasting life

history strategies

(shade tolerant vs. light

demanding).

"My research aims at

broadening our

understanding of an

important but little

known aspect of the

physiological trade-offs

represented by these

two life history

strategies."

Los bosques tropicales

deciduos experimentan
