STRI to coordinate planning forPanama's Coiba National ParkSTRI signed an agreement withthe United NationsEducational, Scientific andCultural Organization(UNESCO) to coordinate thedevelopment of a newmanagement plan for Panama'sCoiba National Park andSpecial Marine ConservationArea, on May 17. The project iscoordinated by ConservationInternational (CI), the UnitedNations Foundation (UNF) andUNESCO's World HeritageCenter.

STRI's Juan L. Maté will directthe process of revision andupdating of the current plan,which was originally preparedby the Spanish Agency forInternational Cooperation(AECI) in 1996. Over the next18 months a process will beimplemented to develop arealistic, modular managementplan while promoting improvedquality of life for residents ofareas within the zone ofinfluence of the park.

At the request of Panama'sNational EnvironmentalAuthority (ANAM), the Coibaplanning team is composed ofprofessional Panamanians whoprovide expertise in diverseareas such as protected areaplanning, geographicinformation systems, terrestrial,marine and fisheries biology,law, architecture and civil

engineering, among others. Theteam will work closely withANAM, which manages parkoperations, and the PanamaMaritime Authority whichmanages the Special MarineProtected Zone in the Park.The choice of a scientificresearch organization ascoordinator of the planningprocess, as proposed byANAM, is a significant steptoward truly informedconservation and sustainableeconomic development.

PNC is part of the East PacificMarine Corridor with theGalapagos Islands in Ecuador,Cocos Island in Costa Rica andMalpelo and Gorgona Islandsin Colombia. Both Coiba andGalapagos are World NaturalHeritage Sties. These islandshave established a network ofprotection and ecotourism thatwill support PNC. UNESCOexperts will also provide theirexperience to develop a planaiming at developing Coiba as apilot site for other WorldNatural Heritage Sites inCentral America.

It aims to be used byfishermen and the governmentfor the design andimplementation of policies for

the sustainable use of naturalresources on the Isthmus ofPanama.

Leslibetaeuscoibita: new genusand new species ofshrimpSTRI fellow Arthur Anker,Denis Poddoubtchenko, andIngo S. Wehrtmann from theUniversity of Costa Ricaauthored the article “Leslibetaeuscoibita, n. gen., n. sp., a newalpheid shrimp from the Pacificcoast of Panama (Crustacea:Decapoda)” in a recent issue ofZootaxa (vol. 1183: 27–41). Itsname refers to its locality, IslaCoibita, part of Isla CoibaNational Park.

The alpheid fauna of theeastern Pacific consists of 13genera with almost 100 species

ranging from southern Alaskato Cape Horn. The PanamanianPacific coast presents a highdiversity of marine habitats, andmay be one of the majorbiodiversity hotspots of alpheidand other marine species.

Heckadon celebrates Chiriquianniversary with marathonconference journeySTRI’s Stanley Heckadon-Moreno, was invited byacademic and environmentalorganizations to present hislatest book, Selvas entre dos maresin the Chiriqui province, as partof the celebration of its 147anniversary. He used theopportunity to narrate thehistory of STRI, our currentresearch and public programs,and answer endlessenvironmental questions relatedto the region. The audiencesincluded a private school inDavid, Radio Chiriquí earlynews, a 400 people crowd inBoquete, the Boqueteño ladiesand a 200 group invited byOTEIMA private university inDavid.

Given the recent spate of earthtremors in the region, theaudience was keen to know ifVolcan Baru is "asleep" or"awake" and what could it do inthe future. Through Heckadon,STRI's Carlos Jaramillocontributed an excellent,concise and clear life history of

the Volcan, “the first piece ofhard scientific information theyhad received on their mostimportant and beloved physicallandmark” according toHeckadon.

have advanced

scientific study of

species and

populations, and the

answer for the large

'Coiba honey bee' was

thought to be readily

available if some bees

were adequately

preserved for DNA

studies and compared

to their putative

mainland cousins.

A difference in the

base pair sequence of

a molecular marker of,

say, 4% or more, would

indicate that these

bees would likely be

'reproductively

isolated', and qualify

as distinct species.

As an alternative, the

colonies of each bee

could be used to

obtain virgin queens,

and artificial

insemination, using

their complementary

drones, might then be

used to see whether

such an artificial

hybrid produced viable

queens and drones,

with the full capacity of

mating and

reproducing.

In that case, the two

populations would be

called one and the

same species,

although isolated for at

least 12,000 years,

when Coiba separated

from the mainland

during the end of the

earth's last glacial

cycle.
