The Turkish Yoke
The Turkish Yoke was a period from the late 14th
to late 19th century, during which Bulgarian country did not exist . Bulgarian-populated lands were under the
Ottoman rule.
Rayah- literally "flock" the name for the
Bulgarian population in the Ottoman
Empire.
These were the worst centuries ever for the
Bulgarian people because of the
everyday attacks, many taxes, murders,
violence against women and girls and abduction of young
boys.
The man who does not keep in his/her heart the memory of the sufferings of his/her people, does not treasure his/her people and country.
At the time of the Turkish yoke there
were about 30 different taxes. Among
them the tax on firewood, wine tax, tax on hay, the tax on pigs that were fattened for Christmas and many
more.

During the Turkish yoke many Bulgarian revolutionaries

Ornaments prove that the traditions of medieval
nobility were preserved during the Ottoman rule.
These were some of the most difficult times for the
Bulgarian population
but we managed to survive as a nation.
