Turning a SharePoint Group Site into a Teams Site Many of you will have already obtained a SharePoint site prior to the Teams Release. If you are the Owner of a SharePoint Site, then you will have the ability to turn on Teams without having to request a new on via the Office 365 Help & Support request form. Please Note you will be unable to do this to a SharePoint Communications Site! How to identify your type of Share Point Site Teams Site vs Communications Site A SharePoint Teams Site will contain the following details: Underneath the Site name it will state either “Public or Private Group” In the top right-hand corner, it will display the current number of Team Members A SharePoint Team Site is also accessible from Outlook and will provide the same details as above A SharePoint Communications Site: Does not contain the text underneath its title Does not contain the Group Members Icon

Turning a SharePoint Group Site into a Teams Site Many of you will have already obtained a SharePoint site prior to the Teams Release. If you are the Owner of a SharePoint Site, then you will have the ability to turn on Teams without having to request a new on via the Office 365 Help & Support request form. Please Note you will be unable to do this to a SharePoint Communications Site!

How to identify your type of Share Point Site

Teams Site vs Communications Site

A SharePoint Teams Site will contain the following details:

Underneath the Site name it will state either “Public or Private Group”

In the top right-hand corner, it will display the current number of Team Members

A SharePoint Team Site is also accessible from Outlook and will provide the same details as above

A SharePoint Communications Site:

Does not contain the text underneath its title

Does not contain the Group Members Icon

Adding Teams to a SharePoint Teams Site

In order to do this, you must have the “Owner” Role in your SharePoint Team Site. Members will be unable to add Teams.

Navigate to the Home Page of your SharePoint Site The SharePoint Owner will be able to see an Icon at the bottom left hand of the screen.

Select the “Create a Team” Link at the bottom of the Icon to begin adding the Teams Application to your Group

This may take up to a minute to complete.

Upon completion the Icon will change to “Success! Click here to go to your Team” Select the Link to go to your Team.

The Team will attempt to open within your Browser Window. You can progress with any of the following:

Your Browser Window may detect teams and prompt you to open it as per this image.

You can select “Use the web app instead” to Open the teams web client within this window.

Select “Launch it now” to force your Desktop Teams Client to open.

Once the Team Client is open it will navigate directly the Teams List/Grid Area where you will be able to locate your new Team.
