RESIN TRANSFER MOULDING - RTM

Reflex have developed Resin Transfer Moulding, an unique system that provides us, and our clients, a huge competitive advantage. This new technology allows us to go from mould to product in an extremely short timeframe, by the controlled injecting and vacuum-ing of resin. The end result of this process is the ability to offer a controlled, quick turnaround, high volume production of a mould, combining the benefits of volume, speed, and quality in this next generation innovation.

Composite engineering is about providing endless design possibili-ties through innovative processes— the freedom of flexibility in design. Reflex’s investment in the composite engineering field allows them to produce fiberglass-based products that are limited only by their client’s imaginations.

Composite products have the benefit of being seamless, stronger, lighter, and possess an almost unlimited lifespan, as well as being endlessly customizable in terms of size, shape, and color. Reinforce-ments such as carbon, Kevlar, and aluminium, can be added as part of the composite process meaning that products can be designed to be lighter yet stronger than traditionally produced.

CHRISTCHURCH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Reflex took over a contract to manufacture and install fire resistant and low smoke emission tapered composite covers to protect the large I section steel roof beams. These covers are dual purpose; firstly to provide a fire rating, and secondly as an aesthetic addition. They were made in 4 metre sections to simplify handling and installation.

53 FT YACHTDavie Norris boatbuilders & Reflex produced this split mould for production yachts and constructed this hull.

COMPOSTING VESSEL LIDS - “HOT ROT”Specially insulated lids for these vessels manufactured by Reflex. Chemically resistant resins can be used to provide protection in hostile environments where metal products will corrode quickly.

FIBREGLASS TANKS FOR FILTERTECHSpecially designed fiberglass tanks for Filtertech sewerage treat-ment. These range from 2200 litres up to 14000 litres capacity. Includes various injection hatches, pipe outlets, and pump mountings. At the moment we are building a 30000 litre tank for custom use, and are able to make tanks to suit most needs.

SMALL BOAT PATTERN MAKING Reflex and their contractors manufacture many trailer boat plugs. These are developed using a variety of methods, including CAD. More traditional methods are also employed as shown in these photos of a clients project.

DESIGNLINE’S AWARD WINNING ELECTRICAL BUSFantastic shapes can be produced by liquid moulding techniques. This futuristic bus from Designline is a leading edge low emission vehicle that is being trialled around the world. The concept and design is a credit to Designline and Reflex are extremely proud to have been involved in the development of this cutting edge bus.

CITY BUS PARTSOur general moulding division is heavily involved in the manufacture of components for Designline City Bus construction.

We offer a pattern making service, which constructs the ‘plugs’ from which a mould is made, a mould making service, a composite moulding service, and a final assembly operation, which fits the brackets and other hardware to complete each panel. Our panels are all pre-fitted to jigs prior to packing and shipping to ensure a perfect fit each time.

We supply external panels, roofs, dashboards, air conditioning, and heat ducting and a variety of other mouldings. These fiberglass panels reduce weight and assembly line labour, as well as their many other advantages.

MOTOR HOMESReflex have many motor home projects under their belt. From con-ceptual plans to finished product we have completed camper van and motor home projects. We provide high quality panels and can then produce in volume.

Reflex produce multi purpose fibre glass panels and custom parts for the transport industry. Please contact us with your particular require-ments for more information.

SANDWICH PANELSWe have developed machinery in our plant to enable us to manufac-ture sandwich panels up to 14 x 4m in size. using a vacuum press we can custom build flat panels for any application.

Typical construction types are: Plywood core with fibreglass exterior surfaces (suitable for dry goods truck bodies, bulkhead, roofs, etc) Polyurethane foam core with plywood and an exterior surface of high gloss fibreglass sheet. These panels can be further reinforced with beams for roof application, doorframes, hinge blocks, crush blocks etc. These foam-cored panels can be made for chiller bod ies (0 degrees) down to -30 degrees freezer bodies. TRUCK BODIES Although we don’t construct truck bodies we do supply the compo-nents to make them. Panels, roofs, floors, doors, bulkheads, alu-minium extrusion corner caps and interior light shells. Many of our panels can be seen on the roads in the form of van bodies, trailers, and semi trailers.

We offer a service which will surface the deck with non slip. We do fibreglass repairs on your damaged truck body, and will happily do insurance quotes for this work.

Reflex have worked on a large range of architectural projects that have utilised the benefits of composite engineering to provide in-novative solutions that are beyond the possibilities of traditional methods.Over the next few pages you will find a small selection of some of our more challenging architectural projects, and we would ask that should you have any questions at all you do not hesitate to get in contact with us.

NELSON WATER TANK ROOFOur brief was to design, construct, and erect a composite cover for one of Nelson city’s water supply holdings tanks. The tank is sited high above Nelson with limited access, where the old metal cover had deteriorated beyond repair. The new cover was constructed us-ing flat fibreglass polyester sheets bonded to box section fibreglass members. The “pie slice” sections were manufactured in two parts at our Christchurch plant and then transported to Nelson. These were then lifted by crane into position and secured by stainless steel fasteners and polyurethane adhesive in an underslung position.

“CLOCK TOWER” CELLPHONE TOWERThis project entailed building a clock tower edifice to cover an exist-ing cellphone tower.

HAGLEY BAND ROTUNDAReflex met the challenge of structurally reinforcing the iconic band rotunda by custom moulding pillars that both looked historically cor-rect, and that would last for decades to come.

HANMER SPRINGS THERMAL POOLSReflex has surfaced all the pools including rock pools and even the streambed to eliminate loss of heated water through the gravel base. Our mobile team provides ongoing routine maintenance and new pool construction. The special coatings used on top of a fibre glass base provide long life in a traditionally difficult environment.

ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION Product designer Valentine Tinc created this seat and Reflex took his dream from concept to finished creation.The final result is a high end piece of furniture as a work of art that recently won a design award.

REPLICA MERCEDES BENZ 500KThe car was scaled up from a Brago model 500K Mercedes Benz and made into a full size plug by Russell France. Fibreglass moulds were then taken and the panels manufactured. A Holden HQ utility chassis is the foundation of the replica.

Reflex have produced a range of diverse signage and display material for both industrial and commercial clients. Offering a vast scope for design in terms of scale and form, composite engineering combines both high strength with minimal weight making it an ideal medium for display and signage. COUNTDOWN SIGNAGEAn example of large scale custom signage that would be difficult to produce with traditional materials. Individually moulded 3D letters have been made then fixed to the wall, providing a visually dominant example of large scale display signage.

REPLICA SPITFIREThis replica Spitfire was a custom mould made as a display item. We took great care in researching the original Spitfire before design-ing and producing the very realistic finished model!
