Welcome to the King’s CollegeLondon Summer School. The King’s Summer School is a great teaching opportunity for those looking to gain experience and further develop their skills in a unique educational environment. Prospective tutors have the chance to design and deliver their own course in their chosen fieldwhileteachingonaleadinginternationalSummer School at one of the top 20 universities in the world.* With London as a backdrop you have the city at your disposal to utilise the amazing range of museums and other historical locations to further enhance your course where relevant.

The Summer School runs two three-week sessions each year and all courses are academically intensive.

Coursesareofferedinthefollowingareas:• Arts, Literature and Culture• Business and Management• Health and Society• Politics and Social Sciences• Law• Latin and Ancient Greek

Our Summer School students come from diverse international backgrounds; in 2013 we saw students from 90 countries and over 200 universities. This ensures our students receive a truly international experience. We findourstudentsplacevalueontheirtimeatKing’s and leave with a real sense of achievement; because of this you as a tutor are an important factor in the Summer School experience and we appreciate the timeandeffortallofourtutorsputintomaking each course challenging and of strong interest to our students. We have put together this guide to provide you with important information regarding the King’sSummerSchool.Ifyouhaveanyspecificqueries that aren’t covered in this booklet pleasecontacttheSummerProgrammesofficeon [email protected] * (QS World University Rankings 2013/14)

What the Summer Programmes office expect from tutors Summer School teaching is typically a very interactive teaching and learning concept and we ask tutors to reflect this on their module.

The Summer School is constantly growing and evolving; there are certain aspects that need to be to be confirmed from your end to ensure the Summer School runs smoothly.

Theseincludethefollowing:

• It is essential that you read the Summer School Programme Regulations. They have changed significantlythisyear,particularlyinareassuch as credit, re-assessment, attendance threshold and plagiarism. It is important that you have read through all documents in the tutor section on KEATS before your module starts. Thereyouwillalsofindmoreinformationon the new feedback system we are putting in place.

• Those tutors whose modules have a Module Organiser need to make sure that their Module Organiser can exercise their responsibility for the module. This means for instance that a detailed timetable needs to be approved by the ModuleOrganiser.Pleasefindalistofthe Module Organiser’s responsibilities further in this document.

• All required documentation that the Summer Programmesofficeasksforneedstobesent through to us in a timely manner. It is standard procedure to ask tutors for a current CV and academic references if they have not taught on the Summer School before. We often need to work to tight timeframes that are out of our control so a quick response is much appreciated. Deadlines that relate to marking and other key timeframes also need to be strictly adhered to.

• It is your responsibility to keep accurate records of student attendance including information on students that have moved out of or into your class once they have arrived. Students need to get the approval from both their current tutor and their new tutor to changecourses;theSummerProgrammesoffice needs to be informed of these changes either

during or after the Summer School session. If students are sick they need to contact both their tutorandtheSummerProgrammesofficetolet them know. Please note that all students need to meet 80% of timetabled contact hours to successfully pass the course. The Summer Programmesofficealsoneedstoknowwhich students will be completing the assessments and would like to receive an academic transcript.

• It is up to each student to pay for any additional course-related costs, i.e. course excursions. Please instruct your students to come to the SummerProgrammesofficetomakethese payments.

• Course excursions need to be integral to the content of the module. These elements can enrich a module immensely but they need to be good value for money and a good use of time. It is important to explain learning objectives and outcomes of the excursion from the outset and prepare the students for the excursion as well as follow up. All tutors need to complete a Risk Assessment form if they are taking their studentsoffcampusonanytypeofexcursion; this document can be found on KEATS. Please completeasrequiredandhandintotheoffice.

• If students are unable to upload their assessments to KEATS for any reason you and/ or the student will need to let us know. Similarly, if their mark isn’t included on KEATS you will need to send this through to us so we have a complete record of all marks.

• Academic standards need to be adhered to at all times; when you are marking student assessments you need to consider appropriate referencing and bibliographies and use the Marking Criteria as a guide. This can be found on KEATS.

• Please remember to exhibit professional behaviour with your students at all times. Please do not use social media as a way of contacting students.

• Do not divert from the approved SCAF/MAF formasthedetailstherehavebeenofficially agreed and approved.

What to expect of students In 2013 King’s Summer School students came from 90 countries and over 200 institutions and had widely diverse backgrounds. While our SummerSchoolcoursesareaimedatfirstandsecond year university level we also see postgraduate students and working professionals looking to study subjects of particular interest.Thereforeourstudentsfrequentlyhavedifferentlevels of ability and experience which is something to bear in mind when teaching on the Summer School. Courses are approved at levels 4 or 5 and these levels need to be adhered to, but you could also consider how you might utilise/challenge students with more experience.

Module organisersAll PhD students and external tutors need to arrangeforaModuleOrganisertoineffect‘own’the module they are teaching on. The role of the Module Organiser is to oversee the module from course preparation through to moderation. The Module Organiser must be a King’s College Londonacademicmemberofstaff.

TheroleoftheModuleOrganiserincludes:

1) Preparation and submission of the module proposal, including gaining approval of the relevant School or Department and Programme Board of Examiners;

2) Ensuring that the module curriculum and timetable are appropriate to enable students to achieve the learning outcomes;

3) Ensuring that all teaching sessions are delivered by appropriate personnel;

4) Ensuring that all assessment is carried out in line with College regulations.

APermissionsformmustbesignedoffbyboththeModule Organiser and the relevant Head of Department to ensure complete transparency throughout this process. This should be returned totheSummerProgrammesoffice.

Timetables and planningTimetables need to be approved by the Module Organiser of your module (if applicable).

All courses have a minimum of 45 contacts hours, with a total of 150 study hours over each three week session. Classes run from Monday to Thursday with the exception of the Ancient Languages which also runonFridays.Coursesaresetateitherfirstorsecond year undergraduate level.

Summer School tutors are required to teach either in the morning (9.00-1.00) or the afternoon (1.00-5.00). Rooms will be booked based around these timeframes so this will need to be adhered to when confirmingyourfinaltimetable.

It is important that you do not deviate from your timetable. If you have to it is important to agree changes with your Module Organiser, to consult withtheSummerProgrammesoffice,andifthechange is approved, to communicate changes efficientlyandsensitivelytoallstudents.

MarketingThe Summer School markets the programme as a whole, both online and through printed materials, i.e.prospectus,flyers,posters,etc.Wealsoworkclosely with the King’s International Marketing department and many universities/agents worldwide to promote the programme as widely as possible. To ensure your course has a strong chance of recruiting successfully we recommend that you undertake more targeted marketing initiatives for your particular course. This could include utilising your own networks/contacts, seeking online groups or email lists you could be included on – many of these are free! – or attending conferences or events that are relevant to your subject area. Where possible the Summer Programmesofficeishappytoassistwiththis.
