Tvrđava Kastel predstavlja istorijsko jez-gro grada Banjaluke, mje-sto nastanka grada i kroz
istorijske epohe okosnicu gradskog razvoja, što potvrđuju najstariji pronađeni ostaci tragova života na Kastelu koji potiču iz neolita i bronzanog doba (2000-1900 p.n.e.).
Rimska osvajanja ilirskih teritorija dovela su do stacioniranja rimskih vojnih formacija i za njihove potrebe podizani su vojni logori (castre) na širem području današnje Banjaluke. Na putnom pravcu koji je povezivao tadašnju Salonu (današnji Solin) i Servitium (današnja Gradiška) izgrađena je Castra za koju se smatra da je ležala na mjestu Banjaluke i istraživači je povezuju sa Kastelom, što potvrđuju pronađeni ostaci kasnoantičkih objekata većih dimenzija i predmeti od bronze i keramike.
Velika pomjeranja naroda od 5. do 12. vijeka dovela su do značajnih izmjena demografske i kulturne slike ovih prostora i do razaranja urbane kasnoantičke Castre. Kontinuitet naselja ipak nije prekinut i razvijeni rimski grad zamijenjen je slovenskim naseljem gradinskog tipa.
Srednjevjekovni život u Banjaluci bio je veoma intenzivan, o čemu svjedoče mnogi latinski tekstovi koji govore o razvoju naselja, kao i značajni ostaci utvrđenih gradova od 13. do 15. vijeka u okolini Banjaluke. Ime Banjaluka prvi put se pominje 1494. godine u povelji ugarskog kralja Vladislava II Jagelovića izdatoj u Budimu. U tom trenutku, Banjaluka se nalazila u sastavu Jajačke banovine, ugarske tvorevine nastale po padu srednjevjekovne bosanske kraljevine pod Turke 1463. godine. U povelji iz 1525. godine precizno se navodi da je Banjaluka zapra-vo ime tvrđave zvane Castell Nostro Bagna Luca.
U drugoj polovini 16. vijeka Banjaluka dobija veliki društveno-politički i strateški značaj, naročito od 1553. go-dine kada tadašnji bosanski sandžakbeg Sofi Mehmed-paša prenosi u Banjaluku sjedište bosanskog namjesnika. U novim društveno-ekonomskim okolnostima intenzivno se grade naselja sa velikim brojem značajnih javnih objekata. Obnova, proširenje i ojačavanje tvrđave svakako su podstaknuti učestalim austro-turskim ratovima krajem 17. i u prvim decenijama 18. vijeka. Graditelji je tada proširuju, te njena silueta dobija današnju formu izduženog trapeza omeđenog bedemima, osam bastiona sa šest kula i podzemnim prolazima.
Tvrđava u periodu uoči austro-ugarske okupacije ne doživljava modernizaciju i smatra se da je sredinom 19. vijeka prilično oštećena, ali ipak u ovom periodu i dalje živi bez velikog vojnog značaja.
Kastel kao srednjevjekovna, turska i austrougarska tvrđava sa fazama viševjekovne izgradnje, dogradnje, adap-tacije i modernizacije svjedoči o burnim dešavanjima na ovim nestalnim prostorima.
Najvažnije od svega je, da je bila i ostala, urbani embrion grada Banjaluke.

The Kastel Fortress is the his-t o r i c a l epicenter
of Banja Luka , a city descended from the Bronze Age (2000-1900 B.C) and evolved into an en-during witness of the greatest torrents in European history. Numerous archeological studies have carefully traced the history of Banja Luka to confirm the Kastel fortress as its birthplace and name-sake.
Kastel archeological studies also revealed remnants of large buildings with adornments of bronze and ceramic, evidence of Roman conquest against the ancient Illyrain kingdoms which dominated the Balkan Peninsula from antiquity through the dawn of the second millennium. During this pe-riod the Kastel fortress site saw the rise of early Roman military outposts called Castras, connected to the heart of the Empire by northern Roman roads through the ancient Greek City of Salona (now the Croatian municipality of Solin) and modern day Gradiska, Banja Luka’s northern city neighbor.
The decline and fall of the Roman Empire coincided with great Slavic migrations to the Balkans during the 5th through the 12th centuries. The intensity of Slavic life in medieval Banja Luka is documented in many Latin texts. The name Banja Luka was first mentioned in a 1494 charter issued by Hungarian king Vladislav II Jagelovic in Budapest. A Hungarian charter issued in 1525 confirmed Banja Luka was named after its birthplace, the fortress Castell Nostro Bagna Luca.
During the Ottoman period in the 16th century, Banja Luka gained great socio-political and strate-gic importance as the seat of the vast empire’s regional government. The Kastel fortress was repeat-edly fortified and expanded to serve as a vigilant outpost against the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the north. The Kastel fortress witnessed repeated wars in the late 17th century and first decades of the 18th century, and builders in this period provided its contemporary shape featuring eight bastions, six towers and underground tunnels.
As with the Roman Empire at its beginning, the Kastel fortress also witnessed the decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire toward the end of the second millennium. Its structure fell into damage and disrepair as its military significance waned in comparison to the terrible technology of 20th century warfare.
The Kastel fortress, like the city that grew out from its beginnings, endured the tumultuous history of the 20th century and greeted the new millennium as an archeological witness to the great civili-zations of ancient Europe. Its walls now serve as a monument marking the distant beginnings of a long journey that continues to this day.
