History Focus

IN 1880, HENRY CHINNERY, a prominent London stockbroker and Teddington worthy, acquired some property including a mansion known as The Weir along the Lower Road (now Broom Road). He then amalgamated the properties to become Weir House, a large imposing house in its own grounds with lawns sloping down to the Thames. The story moves to 1912 when Bill Kellino, a music hall artist from Kingston was taking a stroll along the towpath by Teddington Lock and decided to cross the bridge and walk along

the other side, down the Lower Road. When he came to Weir House, he was immediately struck by the amount of light there, ideal for the new medium of film-making. Fortunately for Bill, Henry Chinnery also had an interest in the new invention and when approached for permission to film in his grounds, he readily agreed, even going so far as to say that if it started raining, they could use his greenhouse.

Bill Kellino and friends scraped together a sum of £1,000 and Ec-Ko Films was formed. Inevitably the rain followed and they found themselves in the Chinnery greenhouse but far from inconveniencing them, they found it an asset to film under glass where there was no lost time for inclement weather. They leased the house and grounds and built a huge glasshouse so that they could utilise every hour of daylight available for their filming. The long hours and the ‘strange’ lights gave rise to the locals renaming the building Weird House.

The output was soon quite prolific with about one film per week being made, each film being about 500 ft long, running for about five minutes. The films featured Bill’s old music hall ensemble with regular names like The Brothers Egbert and Sam T. Poluski.

In 1914 the house and grounds were acquired by Charles Urban, an American-born film pioneer who specialised in newsreel reportage and scientific and educational films. He traded as

Hollywood on Thames

The Kinemacolor Company and had a five year monopoly on the use of Kinemacolor. By 1915 the early success was tailing off and the company moved to Kew Bridge and changed its name to Homeland Films.

At the end of the First World War in 1918, Weir House was leased and later purchased by Master Films Limited who set about redesigning the house - a single greenhouse building with dressing rooms, workshops, scene docks and a small preview theatre – the first enclosed stage measuring 60ft by 40ft and with the most modern cameras and lighting. Master Films was the first company to produce full length feature films at Teddington. Although their output for 1918-1922 was substantial with some memorable films such as Calvery, Corinthian Jack, Daniel Deronda, Hobson’s Choice, A Peep Behind The Scenes and La Poupee, the critics attacked the productions as being rather cheap, lacking in skill and care. They complained that ‘horizons swayed in unison with boat decks.’ By 1925 the company had gone into liquidation.

The Ideal Film Company merged with British Gaumont in 1927 and leased Teddington Studios. This tenancy was cut short by a serious fire in 1929 but not before they had completed His House In Order with Tallulah Bankhead and Ian Hunter. The last silent film made at Teddington was Hours of Loneliness for Carlton Films.January 1931 saw the development of talking pictures and the studios were purchased by Henry Edwards and E G Norman. They announced

their plans to re-equip the studios to produce Continues on page 26

To help support the Say No To Sainsburys Campaign look out for fund raising events that will be announced soon.

For up-to-date news and further information visit bit.ly/nosainsburys

To make a donation to the fund follow the link above.

Preserving History

As SAINSBURYS UNRELENTINGLY pursue their plan to open a new outlet on the Caligaris

site on High Street, Vici King is undaunted in her mission to campaign against it. Vici is a resident of the historic Peg Woffington Cottages situated opposite the proposed location. Living in a home that oozes tradition and continuity has given her a strong sense of wanting to preserve this corner of Teddington’s history and character. Mum of two, Vici, along with husband Leo, have dedicated a huge amount of time, effort and money to fight their case, along with neighbours, local residents and community groups.

Local residents were informed of Sainsburys’ plan nearly three years ago, and although the Council unanimously voted against it, Sainsburys have since appealed to the government inspectorate and won.

Is Vici disheartening after all the work that has gone into the campaign? ‘We are not going to give up, that much we’re clear about. We have been living and breathing this issue for a long time now. When the news came through that the appeal had been won, I spoke to a couple of people who advised us that we were just going to have to accept it. We had to give serious consideration to giving up, because there is so much time and money involved in pursuing other options. But there is just a feeling in our gut that we are doing the right thing. I’m happy to give my time to this, but I have to admit it is a strain.’

‘I feel a lot of frustration that with all the strength of feeling within the community, a host of community groups, our councillors and MP Vince Cable, who have all spoken out against the plan in one way or another, yet it has made no difference. I begin to question what our local government is for when they aren’t heard.’

‘What it now boils down to is purely legal arguments, there is no room for emotion or any of the human issues that people feel passionate about. Our case going forward is purely built on legalities, we are contesting some of the judgments and assumptions that were made. But taking this stand wouldn’t be an option if we weren’t prepared to fund the case and engage a barrister. Which makes me feel the system is very unfair, without funds there would be nothing we could do.’

‘It is really sad for Teddington, we were in the top ten high streets in the Telegraph awards, Totally Locally Teddington is such a well regarded organisation, people look at Teddington as a paragon of what a high street should be, yet all of that has been deemed irrelevant.’

‘There are many times when being involved in this campaign has felt like a full time job and I’ve wanted to give up. Towards the end of my pregnancy with my second child it was becoming harder and harder. But at the same time I was also invigorated to see how the community works when we all pull together. I’ve really got a lot form being involved in something bigger and have got to know some great people along the way.’

News

BADMINTON IS ONE of the highest participation sports in the UK combining strength, with

fast responses – 200 mph shuttle speed, agile movement and deft or disguised shots. Have you thought of finding that racquet from school, college or university days and playing again for enjoyment, competitiveness, friendship and fitness reasons?

Chairman of HCC Badminton Club, Graham Sims has been in the role for 30 years and a member of the club for 45 so has seen much of the club’s history that stretches back more than 80 years.

For the majority of the time it has played as the NPL Badminton Club. Originally playing in the NPL ship testing tank at Feltham, since replaced by a Tesco supermarket!, but mainly on the NPL Teddington site in the Glazebrook Restaurant that was housed in a converted wind-tunnel!

More recently, as these latter facilities were demolished when the site was re-developed, it

merged with the Matador club in Hampton and moved to the newly built Sports Hall in what is now Hampton Academy.

The facilities used by HCC are some of the best in the area. The clubs supports five teams covering ladies, mens (x 2), mixed and hybrid teams in the local Staines and Hounslow league playing at a ‘good’ club level. For a long period HCC was the only match-playing club with Badminton of England affiliation in all of Richmond Borough. The club continues to be open, friendly and with a diverse membership.

Club play is from 8pm to 10pm on Wednesdays with home matches played on Friday from 8pm to 10pm.

Long Standing Local Badminton Club

SOMETIMES IT FEELS at the moment as if churches have too much, rather than too

little, to say about marriages. In truth, though, the stories which grab the headlines are about weddings rather than marriages. What happens after the confetti has been swept away, the wedding dress carefully stored and the photos shown to anyone who will look? That is when the marriage proper begins, and from time to time it needs investment.

The seven-week course at Teddington Baptist Church on offer this autumn is a tried and trusted formula, road tested at many other churches up and down the country. Course leader, Graham Hayman, describes it as ‘an M.O.T for your marriage’, adding that it is ‘an opportunity to

enhance your marriage, strengthen it, and keep the fun and romance alive.’

Each session in the course includes a meal, teaching input, and time for every couple to talk together. Nobody is expected to discuss their marriage with anybody other than their spouse! It could well be the best £70 the couples ever spend on themselves.

Richard Littledale, minister at Teddington Baptist church, adds ‘Aas a minister, it is one of the best moments in my professional life to pronounce a couple husband and wife. I am aware, though, that the real work of marriage begins after the honeymoon is over. We are very pleased to offer such a resource to the TW11 community.’

Teddington Property Prices

I T SEEMS THE property market is featuring on the

10 o’clock news every time I get chance to sit down and watch it. So, with that in mind, I wanted to do some research to see what’s really going on, especially in our town of Teddington...

I asked Rightmove for all of the properties that had come on to the market in Teddington in the last 28 days. The answer is 152 to be precise. After one month, how many of those 152 had found buyers? The answer is 28, which is less than one in five (or 18.4%). That’s a pretty healthy turnover in my opinion, considering some say the market is heading for its knees, but how does that compare to the last two months? In the last 56 days, of the 255 properties that have come on to the market in Teddington, 67 have a sale agreed on them (or 26.3%). So maybe it has slowed slightly in the last month, but surely that’s a good sign for you investors – with a better chance of a deal being done perhaps!

If you are a landlord in Teddington who invests for capital growth as opposed to yield, it is crucial to look to build that growth by getting a property at a discount or by finding a way to add value. So, how can you get a discount in this market with property values alight and supposedly in high demand? Well, I have a great technique for finding properties that have been on the market for sale over three months or more. You don’t need any special software. When searching, all you need to do is ask Rightmove to list your search results with the most recent first. The

ones on the last few pages are, by definition, the ones that have been on the market longest and potentially ready to do a deal. Simple but effective!

We shouldn’t look at Teddington in isolation without looking at the London market as a whole. The roaring London property market of the last 12 to 18 months is starting to run out of steam as common sense returns. I believe we have reached a point where the gap between London and the rest of the country is becoming mouth-wateringingly alluring to London home owners who have, for several years, put off moving out. The result is more stock on the market, tipping the demand and supply balance in favour of the buyer, and slightly more realism in terms of price from sellers.

If you would like to discuss my thoughts on the Teddington rental market or simply need a very good letting agent, feel free to call me or email [email protected].

AS THE SUMMER MONTHS draw to a close, we unavoidably find ourselves retreating indoors

in these increasingly cooler evenings. If you find yourself once again approaching that out of date and not quite comfortable or glamorous enough settee for a night in front of the TV, perhaps it’s time to look around at the latest trends.

The internet brands are now leading the way on affordable designer furnishings. There has been an explosion of accessible well designed ‘Lounging’ options, with everything from re-invented retro armchairs to contemporary sofabeds. E-commerce brand www.made.com offer affordable designer furniture but be warned they make to order so you will have to wait at least twelve weeks for delivery.

Whether you lean towards a retro 50’s inspired curvy shape, or a more traditional Chesterfield, there will most definitely be a style that suits you best.

This Flights of Fantasy Sofa from House of Hackney is a great contemporary twist on a traditional button back Sofa. Use this offset against a neutral background as a fantastic statement piece in a traditional house.

A clash of contemporary meets traditional has been a key trend across the interior design world this autumn for those with a bigger budget. A collaboration between the progressive Scottish textile designers Timorous Beastie and iconic

Interiors & Homes

Sofa Trends This Autumn British brand Ercol, resulted in this gorgeous Studio-Couch.

Whatever the style that best reflects your tastes, the three main things we think about when looking at a sofa are style, comfort and cost.

Along with the shape, fabric is an important influence that determines the look and feel of your space. Sometime all you need is to invest in a new set of covers. I’m often asked to help with bespoke fabric covers. Do bear in mind that natural materials such as linen or leather will wear faster than treated purpose made covers.

Size is of course a vital consideration. Nobody wants to have a beautiful sofa that they have to climb over in order to get out of the room. Measure the space, along with any steps or awkward obstacles that might be tricky when it comes to installation. Laying out newspaper on the floor to represent the size of the new piece helps to get a real idea of how it will work.

For rooms with low ceilings, a deep seated, low backed sofa would be best. For narrow spaces I would go for a modular system, and the familiar ‘L-Shaped’ works wonders in an area that has a

walkway through the space.

Then last but not least, the squish factor. For a firmer seat and low maintenance, I recommend feather covered foam cushions. For larger sofas with deep seats feather filling

offers a luxurious feel, but be warned you may never want to get up.

History Focus

IN 1880, HENRY CHINNERY, a prominent London stockbroker and Teddington worthy, acquired

some property including a mansion known as The Weir along the Lower Road (now Broom Road). He then amalgamated the properties to become Weir House, a large imposing house in its own grounds with lawns sloping down to the Thames.

The story moves to 1912 when Bill Kellino, a music hall artist from Kingston was taking a stroll along the towpath by Teddington Lock and decided to cross the bridge and walk along the other side, down the Lower Road.

They announced their plans to re-equip the studios to produce

their own films as Teddington Film Studios Ltd and also to rent space to other filmmakers. Only one film was made under this banner; Stranglehold directed by Henry Edwards himself.

The Government had become concerned at the low output of British films in contrast to the huge influx of overseas productions and set in motion legislation to balance matters. In 1928 the Government Quota Legislation came into force ensuring a certain amount of British film footage must be screened at all British cinemas, starting at 5% and rising in annual stages to reach 20% in 1935. The Quota Act ran for ten years and, with the introduction of sound, was to have a profound effect on the British film industry, especially Teddington Studios.

In 1931 Warner Brothers First National Productions Ltd took a lease on and later purchased Teddington Studios to make between 120 – 150 low budget ‘Quota Quickies’ to satisfy legislation. Although they were not looking for quality as these films were secondary to the main features, it soon became apparent that this was an ideal training ground for producers, directors, technicians and actors alike. Heavy investment was made by Warner Bros with £100,000 spent on a new sound stage, power house, office wing and prop shop. Although no critical acclaim was expected from these films, some new stars were discovered; Errol Flynn made his debut in Murder At Monte Carlo in 1934 and was quickly whisked

off to Hollywood thereafter. Many other household names served their apprenticeship in films at Teddington Studios including Rex Harrison, Joan Hickson, Cecil Parker, Felix Aylmer, Laura La Plante and Margaret

Lockwood. It was said that 10% of all British films made came from Teddington. By 1938 the Quota term had been served which led to fewer films but those that were made were longer and of better quality.

The studios closed briefly at the outbreak of war but re-opened shortly afterwards under the control of Studio Manager, Doc Salomon who was drafted in from Burbank. Whilst many other film studios in London were closed during the war and used for other purposes, Teddington was fortunate to be left to carry on the business of making films. These included The Night Invader, The Hundred Pound Window and The Dark Tower.

On the evening of 5th July 1944 some of the production staff were trying to persuade Doc Salomon to join them for a drink in the King’s Head. He declined sadly saying ‘All you British think about is beer!’ A V1 flying bomb fell into open ground at the studio where it exploded, igniting oil tanks. Doc Salomon was killed instantly, along with two others.

Despite a grand re-opening by Danny Kaye in 1948, the studios never recovered their former momentum and closed down in 1952. Although they once again opened as a Television Studios in 1955, but that is another story.

SEPTEMBER IS ALWAYS a transformational month. The seasons change, we return from the

summer holidays, schools are back and the traffic trebles. It marks the start of the Xmas build up – the most important time of year for the wine trade. This month, we look at medals, corkage and BYO and what I’ve been eating (again).

MEDAL MANIAThe International Wine Challenge (IWC) and Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) have become two of the most important wine competitions in the world. April sees a frantic, two week judging fest, where hundreds of the world’s top tasters convene to taste tens of thousands of wines. Trophies, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded, commendations are given and the net result is a snapshot of what the wine trade thinks of a large set of wines. It is not all inclusive. The wines have to be commercially available in reasonable quantities and not every wine in the world is judged – only a very small proportion. It does give a strong, third party endorsement of any wine and certainly my experience of these wines has been very positive, both in an immediate short term drinking perspective as well as top medal winners that I have laid down and waited a few years to drink. The results come out in May but Decanter magazine does a big spread in September and a number of the very highest accolade wines are announced then as well.

One particular wine that stands out is Soave La Rocca 2011 Pieropan @ £23.00. Every year this wine wins a trophy or gold medal and has already sold out. The 2012 is already getting rave reviews so I buy it and sit on it so when no-one else can get it...

CORKAGE AND BYO I am very lucky, my job requires me to spend a disproportionate amount of time tasting fine wines and matching them with different dishes – often in restaurants. The matters of corkage and BYO (Bring your Own) often arise and over

the years I have discovered that a surprisingly large number of establishments are happy for you to bring your own wine if you ask. This fact is rarely publicised for the obvious reason that the restaurant will always want you to consume from their list. However, a quick call in advance or at the time of booking is all it should take.

So what should you expect to pay, £5, £10, £30? Often the higher the perceived reputation of the restaurant the higher the price. Recently, I was charged the price of a bottle of house wine in order to allow me to bring a prized bottle that if I had bought off the wine list would have set me back in excess of £200. Thus a modest house wine charge to consume it with delicious cuisine seemed eminently reasonable.

CHEESE & WINE MATCHING TIP NO: 2 Blue Cheese and Sweet WineA personal favourite of mine – it is a surprise to many how fantastic the pairing can be of a rich Roquefort, a creamy dolcelatte or a mature stilton with a high quality dessert wine. Sauternes and Barsac sweeties are delightful as are Monbazillac and Bergerac Moelleux, any botrytis Semillon based wine, Auslese Riesling….the list goes on. Fundamentally, it is the harmony between the salty blue cheese and the sweetness of the wine that makes this such a success.

TIM’S DINNERSBack to Retro recently for a quick mid-week set dinner. Great service, poised, precise first course of salmon, followed by a delicious roast chicken leg with peas a la Francaise. Simple fare but full of flavour. We enjoyed a Beaune rouge 1er Cru 2006 Chanson preceded by a delightful glass of Methode Traditionelle sparkling wine made from just outside the Champagne AOC.

Councillor’s Update

some 40 closures to provide capacity for fluvial flood water coming down stream. In the near future we are likely to be more at risk from fluvial than tidal flooding but rises in sea level as a result of climate change are a longer term risk. Otherwise we were sorry to learn of the poor take up of free flood measures offered by the Environment Agency to households at greatest flood risk and will be thinking how to remedy this.

SINCE 2001 THE COUNCIL has operated a Cabinet model held to account by Overview

and Scrutiny arrangements. This has not proved altogether satisfactory and this year we have switched to just one big Scrutiny Committee mainly working through task groups.

I am a member of the group reviewing how we coped with the near river (or fluvial) flood earlier this year but also our preparations to deal with potential tidal flooding and flooding caused by sudden inundations of rain (pluvial flooding) such as we had in Teddington in 2007.

As Teddington is on the stretch of the Thames which is affected both by tidal and fluvial events, there is already a complicated interaction plus the sort of flash floods that can occur anywhere. Geology is also an influence – the surface soil in Teddington is described as Kempton Park gravel formation, permeable unless saturated.

I attended the first meeting of the flood scrutiny meeting recently. We had various presentations including one from the Environment Agency. The first diagram compares the prolonged high water river event this spring with the shorter but more severe events in 1894 and 1947. As the second diagram shows the Thames Barrier was used on an unprecedented number of occasions in 2014 but not for its intended purpose to prevent tidal inundations. Instead there were
