Twain Elementary PTSA presents

STEMNIGHT

January 25th 2018

My notes

Activities

Dungeon Crawl Take on the role of a brave adventurer and wind your way through the dangerous halls of our dungeon, all the while trying to collect treasure without running out of dice (and luck).

Dungeon Crawl is a simple press-your-luck game that demonstrates probability and how random chance affects game mechanics and gameplay.

Zombie Bots Try your hand at programming our WinkBots with our easy to use DragonDrop software. Use our block-based coding environment to make changes to the robots. No programming or keyboarding experience necessary!

Then stand back and observe how the robots interact and pass information to one another. Zombie Bots is a great example of the Think-Sense-Act cycle of a robotic control system.

ActivityJoin us to learn all about rocketry! Students will get to design their own pneumatically driven rockets and launch them as far as they can. See how launch angles, mass, and fin design all have an effect on total flight distance.

Company infoInspiring the Next Generation of Engineers! Engineering for Kids offers the blend of STEM education and fun for children ages 4 – 12. Our wide-ranging curriculum embraces foundational engineering concepts and helps students to build lifelong skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and analysis, teamwork and collaboration, through exciting hands-on engineering projects.

From building rockets to wind turbines to skyscrapers and more, our programs explore all the different disciplines of engineering (aerospace, chemical, civil, environmental, and more) and leverage a wide variety of materials to create a fun, supportive and hands-on environment.

Activities

For Kindergarten through 2nd Grade:● Splash in Math - roll your number and apply math operations on that number to complete your

mission!● Find Me Money - Play Treasure Hunter by digging for and counting your hidden treasure (coins

amongst jar of beans)● Sum It Up - 60 seconds, a deck of special cards, get the highest sum possible!

For 3rd through 5th Grade:● Addimorphs - Use a deck of special cards to morph the addition fact on the special Addimorph

board.● Magic Plus - Create a magic plus using dominoes such that the sum of inner numbers and the sum

of the outer numbers equals to the challenge number.● Tangrams - Solve puzzles by rearranging the shapes to form the challenge figures.

For Everyone:Crack the code - It’s a super-secret message with a super-secret code. Crack it!

Battletracks at Mark Twain STEM Night!

Battletracks is a Play-Well inspired competitive game inspired by medieval jousting. Two vehicles travel on a gear rack track with the goal of knocking o fftheir competitor while staying on the track. Enhance your Battletrack vehicle to be bigger, stronger, or faster to beat your opponent o the track.ff

Play-Well TEKnologies

At Play-Well TEKnologies we strive to: ● Build problem-solving skills ● Provide an opportunity for creative expression ● Foster a greater appreciation of how things work ● Encourage the qualities of inquisitiveness, self reliance, and self confidence

in children We do this in the context of fun-filled engineering and architectural projects, activities that both the children and the instructors enjoy!

This means that we: ● Foster a fascination in how things work

▪ We aren’t teaching kids the answers, we are teaching kids how to find the answers

● Expose children to engineering concepts ● Create a fun, unique atmosphere where children can learn● Provide a safe, comfortable environment for students to build projects,

confidence, and self-reliance ● We want to create a safe space for kids to explore failure in order to find

success ▪ (Failure + Hard Work) X Not Giving Up = Success

Activities

Oobleck Station - touch and feel a non-Newtonian fluid and understand its properties,

Blood Model - explore the physical composition of blood with an liquid mixture that contains mock red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets,

Elephants toothpaste - learn about different chemical reactions with this experiment. There will be two demonstrations, which will include information about lab safety.

Instant Snow – This experiment shows a synthesis reaction that creates a byproduct that you can touch and feel. There will be three demonstrations at regular intervals.

Acid vs Base chemical categorization - Test your own saliva with a pH strip to see if it's acidic or basic.

About UsSTEM for Fun is a volunteer group founded by teen mentors at the Gates Foundation that run free STEM workshops for elementary and middle school kids at public schools and libraries all over the Greater Seattle Area. We have a passion for math and science and love to get the youth involved in these subjects by running a workshop that is interactive with fun presentations and hands-on experiments.Visit our Facebook page for more information about us and upcoming events at https://www.facebook.com/stemforfun/

Our school library has a section containing STEM books, including 65 books that were purchased in the fall with a grant from the PTSA. See that list on the PTSA website (twainptsa.org) or ask our librarian for help with finding a book.

The Scientific MethodTwain PTSA’s science fair handbook is a great place to find information about the scientific method and project ideas. Available on the PTSA website and in the school library in February.

Save the date
