Thank you for picking up and welcome to the first issue of Twelve 07 Magazine. This magazine is aimed at professional, aspirational men working, living and commuting to Merseyside. Named after the year that Liverpool was granted city status we hope that you find our articles as intriguing, informative and as interesting as our City’s great history.

The autumn issue is packed full of fashion, reviews, business, technology and sport as well as advice from Ru Anderson, a professional athlete and nutrition expert on “High Performance Living”. We also speak with Gary Walsh, Store Manager of HUGO BOSS who is on hand to provide expert advice on what makes a good suit and what is important when buying a suit.

Matthew McKeown has taken a look at the 10 players looking to push their way into the England squad for next year’s World Cup in Brazil. Let’s just hope that we are able to qualify. If you’re looking to show support to a semi-professional football team this season, look no further than AFC Liverpool; we met with Alan Harrison, member of the club board to take a look at all the good work the club is doing on and off the field.

Finally, if you’re going for a drink after work tonight or this weekend, can we suggest that you attempt to gain your Bierkeller passport? We’ve tried and tested all the beers in the 80 Beers Around The World Bar so that you don’t have to, unless you don’t want to.

After reading this magazine I hope you will all be flocking to HUGO BOSS for a made to measure suit by Gary Walsh, supporting AFC Liverpool, the fastest growing semi-professional football team in the UK and will be gaining your Bierkeller passports in the 80 Beers Around The World Bar.

Happy reading and feel free to follow us on Twitter @twelve07mag

FILM TECHNOLOGY MUSIC

GTA V promises to be one of the best games of the year. Anticipation has grown since the beginning of the year as snippets of artwork and trailers were released. The difference with Rockstar`s recent release is the ability to play as three separate characters thoughout the game; Michael, a retired bank robber, Franklin, an intelligent hustler from the streets and Trevor, a crazy hick with a screw loose.Set in a sprawling Californian state you have more options than any previous GTA before this, with the ability to explore the wilderness, or customise clothes, cars or invest in the

stockmarket. GTAV offers a truly submersive world which will keep you engrossed from beginning to end. Rockstar have changed the driving dynamics so that the cars

handle better, but be under no illusion, you will continue to plough through your fair share of lamposts and fire hydrants.Enjoy your sleepless nights and say goodbye to friends, families and other halves for at least two weeks as you become engrossed in another Rockstar blockbuster.

Released 17th September 2013Platfforms: Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

Watchdogs: Hacking is your weaponSet in Chicago, Watchdogs produces an intriguing, sophisticated level of gameplay by exploring the impact that modern technology has on our society. You play as Aiden Pearce an experienced hacker and former thug whose previous iniquity led to a violent family tragedy. As you seek justice for those events you monitor and hack the villains around you, targeting them with the Chicago security camera network known as ctOS - Central Operaing System. The autonomy to trap the criminals using a variety of methods will keep you engrossed in the game as it progresses. You can capture them by creating a

30 car pile up controlling the traffic lights, or by raising a drawbridge. These methods can also be used when evading the authorities having caused too much of a fuss on the streets of Chicago. You can inflict pain upon your opponents with your baton or over 30 different weapons available. In partnering with Ubisoft Reflections, (the creators of ‘Driver’) you will have more than 65 different cars to explore the vast and intricate city roadways. But if you are more interested in scaling walls and experiencing life on the street at walking pace, Ubisoft have introduced an all new game engine allowing for this freedom.

FIFA 14: THE REVIEWRemember when Pro Evo used to be the best football game around? A few years ago EA changed a few things and haven’t looked back since. Pro Evo doesn’t even make the subs bench. As in the 2013 version of the game FIFA 14 rewards

possession, building from the back and patient build up. The game has been slowed down and there is an emphasis on intelligent play, picking out good passes and noticing when space is opened up. For the seasoned FIFA fan, changes in the the intelligence

of your teammates will be a welcome adaptation, as full backs track back more effectively and centre backs are not dragged out of position for no reason. For anyone still lingering on Pro Evo, now is the time to switch. The ‘Roberto Larcos!’ days are over, FIFA is king and this year’s version is much improved on the last.

Released in August Twelve 07 has played the critically acclaimed Splinter Cell Blacklist

Blacklist follows in the footsteps of many a great Ubisoft game and this title is the first of many from Ubisoft Toronto. Splinter Cell is a gripping modern-day special ops storyline where the player is armed with an arsenal of new weapons and gadgets and a new “killing in-motion” fighting style.Working directly for the President of the USA and commanding the newly instigated and super secret “Fourth Echelon” agency. In the game, there are three separate ways of playing, “Ghost” - the extreme stealth style, “Assault” - the all guns blazing approach and

“Panther” which is the middle ground between the two. The storyline will have you engrossed and the introduction of new and reinvented gadgets for the game provides you with a whole new Splinter Cell experience without forgetting the fundamentals that we love about the series.

Two years. That is a long time to wait for the world’s most famous of music festivals to come around again following its yearlong break.

Granted the London 2012 Olympic Games made up for this disappointed to some extent. Let’s face it, it’s not every day that your country holds one of the most successful spectacles of all time! Two years however is nothing in comparison to the decades of wait that people have had to endure to see arguably one of the greatest bands ever, The Rolling Stones.Glastonbury 2013 lived up to the hype surrounding itself and its line-up, which on paper, appeared rather thin when compared to the other recognised festivals such as Reading and Leeds and V Festival. Yes, the weather may have initially lived up to the traditional British summer, with its constant drizzle and gloom that accompanied early festival goers arriving on the Thursday. However this soon disappeared and the muddy fields that

GLASTONBURY 2013BACK WITH ADDED SATISFACTION

have famously hindered everyone over the years since the gates of Worthy Farm first opened in 1970 became a distant memory as the Somerset sunshine accompanied the remainder of the weekend.

If you’ve never been to Glastonbury but you’ve thought about what it’s like, especially in comparison to the other music festivals, here is a snapshot of some of the highlights of this year’s Festival.

The Rolling Stones

Rock and Roll legends. As simple as that and sounding as good as when they were formed way back in 1962.

This was the one that everyone was waiting for and how they delivered. Their set went on for about two and a half hours and the crowd, approximately 135,000 strong, were treated to classics such as Jumpin’ Jack Flash and (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. So popular in fact that they had to move the Pyramid Field camp site back to accommodate the sheer numbers. Definitely the highlight of the entire festival.

Dizzee Rascal

One of East London’s finest may have played Glastonbury four times, but the 27 year old still knows how to get the crowd bouncing. His fifteen plus strong set list makes you realise how many hits this guy has had. Whether it’s older hits such as Fix Up, Look Sharp or more recent chart toppers such as Bonkers or his recent collaboration with Robbie Williams on Goin’ Crazy, Dizzee delivered and some. If you haven’t already seen him live, you need to…it’s as simple as that! Arcadia

Located near The Other Stage, this late-night extravaganza is something to behold. Dominated by the 40 tonne Giant Spider, made of scrap materials including three cranes and seven jet engines, Arcadia brings some of the most immersive visual experiences you can witness accompanied by some of the UK’s finest DJs. Highlights this year included a set by Fat Boy Slim and Chase & Status with the support of Skrillex, brought in the crowds to accompany the flames, smoke and lasers.

Arcadia were one of the stand-out performances this year

HUGO BOSS: THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD SUIT

Along with expertly trained staff and years of experience in developing the perfect suit for every occassion, HUGO BOSS is leading the way with its professionalism, high level of service and proficiency. It offers an excellent personal shopping experience which cannot be found anywhere else in Liverpool

Gary Walsh, Store Manager of HUGO BOSS, Liverpool ONE, shares his expertise on the importance of a good suit and how HUGO BOSS is perfectly placed to find the right suit for its customers. With his in depth knowledge, Gary advises on what to look for when buying a suit, how best to accessorise and what is curently fashionable.

Page 20: Twelve 07 Issue 1

How are things going with the Hugo Boss at the moment? It is a very exciting time at HUGO BOSS we have launched the BOSS Made to Measure service exclusively in our Bond Street store. In Liverpool One it is a really exciting year as we have just launched our Personal Shopping service where customers can book a private appointment in store or in the luxury of their own home.

What plans have you got for the store? This year the focus has been on building an iconic, formal business in Liverpool. Our goal is to become the destination of choice for anyone shopping in the City. Whether it is for business or a special occasion we have a team of specialists with a diverse background in men’s formal wear, delivering a level of service you will not find anywhere else in Liverpool. When you shop with us you can relax, enjoy a beverage if you prefer, whilst our experts style your complete look.

What makes you qualified for giving advice on suits? All HUGO BOSS store staff are trained to sell specific lines within each of our stores. In our suiting departments the staff are trained to assess a customer’s body shape and recommend the appropriate block, of which we have many. We also build up a strong relationship with our customers that allows us to best understand the requirements that they need from their suits.

How have suits changed over the years? With the development of the metrosexual male, men’s tailoring has become slimmer and more form fitting to complement and meet all the

client’s ever-changing needs.

Why have these changes come about?Men have become more fashion aware and this is reflected in fit and styles across all tailoring houses.

Why is it important to have a good suit?It is a reflection of you and adds confidence. A suit is to a man, is what a little black dress is to a woman. How many suits should the average man have in a collection?Ideally 2-3

What colours should they be?Every man should have a classic black, navy and some form of pin-stripe or check.

What makes a good suit? The key to a good suit is form, fabric and most importantly that the wearer feels confident, successful and comfortable when putting it on.

How important is the fabric? It is very important as it can determine

the way the suit will hang. An everyday suit should be of pure virgin wool as all of our suits are, but if you were looking for something more occasion driven such as for a wedding you might be more inclined to go for a blend and be more adventurous with the colour palette.

What is fashionable at the moment? The key for us at HUGO BOSS this Fall/Winter is the slim fit double-breasted suit, a modern interpretation of the three piece.

How important is accessorizing and are there any things in particular you would suggest?Pocket squares and bow ties will be key feature in all out stores for Fall/Winter ‘13

How do you know if a suit it right for your body? You should feel amazing and be ready to take on the world.

“The key to a good suit is form, fabric and most importantly that the

wearer feels confident, successful and comfortable”

Page 21: Twelve 07 Issue 1

How important to you is the service provided when buying a suit?We instill confidence, knowledge and a total feeling of professionalism to every one of our customers. Everyone enjoys the same level of service and experience in all HUGO BOSS stores.

What are your top three tips for buying a suit?Always be clear of what type of occasion the suit is for and ideally take a pair of formal shoes with you. Do not be afraid to try on new styles and

be open to fabric options.

Tell me what someone can expect if they come and see you for buying a suit? Our aim is to make the customer feel special, whether it be a suit for business or a special event. The specialist team will create a full look for the customer and be able to give advice on how to finish the look at home. For example, teaching the customer how to tie the perfect half Windsor knot or how to wear your pocket square depending on your suit. At HUGO BOSS we do not just sell suits, we sell a lifestyle.

What sets out Hugo Boss suits from the competition? We have a strong heritage in men’s tailoring and are one of the world market leaders in men’s premium suiting. We have a focused design team in our head office in Metzigen that develop our tailoring lines to develop the perfect business suit. New for Fall/Winter ‘13 is the BOSS Tailored Line which is a semi canvas offer under the BOSS menswear umbrella.

In the Hugo Boss store do you have suits for different occasions? We have a wide range of suits for all occasions, from business wear with a fashion edge to classic suiting for weddings. Within the Liverpool store we stock both our BOSS and HUGO lines. HUGO which celebrates in 20th Anniversary this year is perfect for the more fashion focused customer. BOSS is our classic main line with elegant suits and contemporary accessories.

How would someone make an appointment with you for purchasing a suit?Customers can call the store on 0151 702 0390 or they can email the store directly [email protected] and one of the tailoring team will be more than happy to make an appointment.

Ru Anderson – Performance nutritionist, competitive athlete and Owner of Exceed Nutrition shares his views on the best way to achieve the results you want at the gym whilst managing to feel awesome, look great and perform well. Ru works with a wide range of people to achieve their fat loss and ideal body composition goals. To ensure he provides the ultimate service to his clients he has an online nutrition coaching portal “Exceed Nutrition”, which provides every aspect required to reach your ideal body and health goals.

Every client that I have is different; but their aims are always similar, to look good, feel good and perform well. Below I have incorporated the most important rules to achieving optimal body composition & health which I call High Performance Living (HPL). They may appear simple, but for you to achieve the results you seek, you should apply them every single day. Consistency is key.

1. Never Starve Ensure you are eating good nutrition frequently enough to provide your body with the nutrients and energy

it requires. HPL is not about starving the body; it is about diet optimisation matched to you. The food you eat should energise you, make you productive and feel good at the same time. If you get hungry every couple of hours then that is your body telling you it needs the nutrients in order to perform at the level you ask. Providing we eat the right foods at the right time, it is fine to do so. Calorie restriction is never a long term success template to reach our goals.

2. Eat solid protein at every meal Everybody should be eating a higher protein diet; it is healthy

and has a high thermic effect in the body, boosting metabolism and making us look better, build lean muscle mass and reduce body fat. Men should be aiming for 40-50g of protein. A daily total of around 0.6-1g per pound of bodyweight should be the goal.

3. Eat vegetables with every meal Green vegetables in particular are incredible sources of energy for the body along with providing huge amounts of vitamins and minerals (micro nutrients) and important plant chemicals

twelve07.com Autumn 26

Page 27: Twelve 07 Issue 1

(phytochemicals). These will keep you healthy and provide an ideal environment for building muscle mass and losing body fat due to the alkalinising effect they have within the body.

4. Eat whole foods Base all your meals on solid food choices to provide you with higher quality nutrients and to keep you fuller for longer. Avoid meal replacement shakes (unless homemade) and drinks containing calories. Supplements should not make up the bulk of your diet, real food comes first and lots of it.

5. Eat 1 ingredient foodsCreate high quality meals from foods that consist of one ingredient. The more ingredients they contain, the more they have been processed and the chances are they contain more chemicals as a result.

6. Learn to Carb-CycleFor a lean body, you must pay attention not only to how much but also when you eat starchy carbohydrates and fruit. If you exercise, restrict these carbs to post workout meals only, and/or save them to the last meal of the day. This ensures we are in an optimal position to receive this macronutrient and the body can therefore use it for energy instead of storage.

7. Drink plenty of fresh water Staying optimally hydrated is key to HPL. Sip on water continually throughout the day and take a bottle with you everywhere. The goal should be to get hydrated quickly in the morning and to then continually sip on water throughout the day according to thirst.

8. Remove intolerances from the diet

Many people have intolerances/allergies to certain food groups such as gluten and dairy. These can suppress good hormones and disrupt the digestive system to the point that progress comes to a complete halt. Removing these will also improve energy and concentration, making you a more productive person. The ideal food list provided in the HPL manual ensures the majority of common intolerances are removed from the diet.

9. Eat healthy fatsIt’s been proven, eat fat to lose fat. Add high quality fats to your meals and you will lose weight much quicker and healthier. You should aim for at least one healthy fat source with every

meal. The correct fats can be described as modern super foods

10. Get loads of sleep while reducing stress Adequate sleep is essential to optimizing the body. Lack of sleep results in lack of results. Sleep between the hours of 10pm-6am, always. Our nutrition helps optimise the hormones, but the majority of benefits from this occurs at night, when we are in bed.

Why should we all be supporting AFC Liverpool? That was the first question that was asked to Alan Harrison, Member of the club board and it didn’t take long to realise that there are plentiful reasons why. It’s club that is going about things the right way, heavily involved in the community and managing the club sustainably.

Born out of frustration to ticket prices, but not in protest of either Liverpool or Everton FC, AFC Liverpool is going into its 6th season as an officially registered semi-professional club. Vindicated by recent protests regarding the rising costs of match and season tickets in the Premier League and offering an entertaining and viable alternative, the future looks bright for the non-league outfit.

It is clear from the setup of the board, coaching staff and youth setup that the effort that has and continues to go into making the club a success will only further enhance the image and popularity of the team. The members of the board are democratically elected and have a term of three years. Moving on from there they may change to a different role or give up their seat altogether to allow other members to bring in fresh ideas.

Recently the club has introduced a new app to help them engage with the fans on a different level. As expected, most fans are from local area but there are a growing minority from other countries in Europe. Admittedly, many of them are over to watch Liverpool or Everton FC but

while they could have chosen to do a stadium tour or go shopping in the club store’s they have instead decided to watch a semi professional club play grass roots football with proper tackles, Jamie Carragher`esq shouting on tap and an atmosphere with an old school camaraderie.

The expanse of the club’s fan base is very surprising, playing at Prescot Cables ground the average attendance is 150 people and they have seen gates as high as 600. With over 7000 followers on Twitter, AFC Liverpool is the 95th best supported club on the social networking site in the UK. This is no mean feat for a small, 6 year old semi-professional football club and it is leaving some of their more established rivals in its wake.

The next season is massive for the club, playing one division below the Conference North and avoiding relegation last season there is a sense that this year they could finish above their derby contenders, Bootle FC who finished 3rd, 9 places ahead of AFC Liverpool. With an overall ambition of becoming the most successful semi-professional outfit in the UK, promotion is definitely within their sights, especially with goal-scoring machine John Lawless in

the team.

Lawless provided a consistent flow of goals last season. A prowler in front of goal with the skill and panache to wrong foot his opponent, create space and finish emphatically. His background playing for TNS has seen him pit his skills against Steven Gerrard in the Champions League qualifying game in 2005. Now plying his trade at AFC Liverpool he wears the Number 9 shirt and has had a record breaking season, contributing 38 goals in 57 appearances for the club since 2012.

Similarly, Steve Jones, has had an excellent season, scoring 38 goals in 65 appearances. Keeping things steady at the back, is stalwart defender Darren Torpey who has played over 170 games for the club since 2009. It is a strong squad with an emphasis placed on teamwork and cohesion. Training occurs every week and there are regular team building exercises. Unlike many teams struggling for players on a Saturday AFC Liverpool have perfected the balance allowing players to play semi-professional football but carry on with their jobs through the week.

Unfortunately, across Merseyside

Alan Harrison, AFC Liverpool board Member, gives an insight into one of football`s fastest growing semi-professional football clubs and tells us why we should all be supporting AFC Liverpool.

the decline of amateur football is continuing. Recent stories in the press reporting an increase in violence and attacks have contributed to most players not wanting to give up their time on a Saturday or Sunday to enter a battlefield. In the 1970s, Liverpool had more amateur leagues than any other city in the world, barring Sao Paulo in Brazil. The Liverpool Business League had 12 divisions on a Saturday and 8 on a Sunday. Now there are only 4 on Sunday alone.

AFC Liverpool are inspiring in their passion for the beautiful game. It begins long before the first whistle blows, with the board, and their enthusiasm to manage the club in the right direction, on and off the pitch. It seeps down to management where Paul Moore, the Manager, gets the best out of his players; they play with pride, knowing that they are representing the city and the community at the very level where fans can feel connected to the club.

Alongside the league, they have enrolled this season in the FA Cup, hoping for a good run and a big name, last season they beat AFC Blackpool in the preliminary rounds. Asked about the prospect of facing Everton or Liverpool FC, Alan Harrison

replied that a fixture with Everton FC had already ended in victory in the Senior Cup, albeit with a tie given to AFC Liverpool due to frozen pitches and fixture pile ups.

Relationships are strong with the professional teams in Merseyside, particularly with Liverpool FC who offered useful advice when the club first began and there have been strong bonds between the LFC academy and AFC Liverpool, with many a conversation occuring with Frank McParland as players come and go or training methods change and advance. The two clubs also respect the importance of Hillsborough and AFC Liverpool is in partnership and fully supports the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.

Other work that is carried out in the community involves helping the

homeless. Some current and previous players have been introduced to the team through the charitable work that the club carry out, helping those that are less fortunate get their lives back on track.

Furthermore, recent successes on the pitch have led the club to enquire about an area of the city that is suffering from social degradation. The aim is for AFC Liverpool to acquire its own ground in a location that has fallen on hard times, helping bring fans, business and jobs and help the local community and the people living there. This is at a preliminary stage but it is useful yardstick indicating how far the club has come in 6 years and how it values the city and the people within it by striving for sustainability and growth at the same time.

July will see the opening of the AFC Liverpool summer soccer schools for children between the ages of 4 to 16. Held in Croxteth Comprehensive. The courses are open for boys and girls of all abilities and FA qualified coaches provide quality-coaching sessions over a 5-week period.

AFC Liverpool has come a long way in six years, starting out with the `football for a fiver` slogan. It has stayed true to its word so far, with a 21 game season ticket costing only £80. Protests this season have illustrated that the Premier League is pricing out the average fan and according the Alan Harrison, the reason why everybody should be supporting AFC Liverpool is because it offers “grass roots football, at an affordable price that’s helping the community.”

Here’s a challenge for you, suggest to five male friends today that they should try Yoga. Firstly, do you feel comfortable suggesting it? Secondly, was their response something along the lines of “Yoga!? Are you joking?”

Why would you try Yoga? It’s for girls, it’s just stretching, it’s pulling funny poses and the thought of meditation is enough to emasculate you and not want to tell your mates what you’ve been up to. It’s difficult for men to do Yoga, it’s easier to do MMA, boxing, martial arts, football, darts, you name it, there is a whole host of more masculine things men could be doing than Yoga.

More women do Yoga, there is a split in most classes 80 – 20 in favour of the opposite sex with only a few men attending each class. Either they’re brave or they’re keeping it a secret and telling everyone that the reason they are in good shape is because they’ve been hitting the gym HARD.

But your first session of Hot Yoga is in another dimension of anything you have ever experienced before. First and foremost, the biggest challenge is overcoming the feminine image of yoga, accepting that without a doubt you will be in a class dominated by the opposite sex holding poses that you’ll find far too difficult to master, further compounding your emasculinity.

Yet once overcoming the initial embarrassment barrier and accepting that you’re going to try something new, you’ll find that hot yoga in particular is one of the most grueling and rewarding exercise methods you can do. It will change your whole outlook towards yoga.

As a long-standing sufferer of gyms, you may have found them to be clinical, minimalistic, without comfort and often confusing in the way you should be going about your business. You find yourself bamboozled with the plethora of advice on techniques, diet, weight training and machinery but you continue to pay your obligatory monthly fee and you’ll feel good about it, won’t you?

Instead of all the confusion, the tough impact and the workout, which follows your intellectual work-out at work, why not try Hot Yoga? It is practised in a hot room similar to the heat you would experience at a Sauna, with a qualified instructor assisting and testing you throughout the session. You will find your body becoming more flexible, all your muscle groups becoming stronger, your mind becoming calmer. You will notice all your minor and major aches and pains evaporating away. Still not convinced?

There is a reason why footballers like Ryan Giggs have been able to prolong their careers. Giggs is an ambassador of Yoga along with celebrities such as Colin Farrel, Ashton Kutcher, Adam Levine and Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. These guys credit their lean figures to the practice of yoga and are not ashamed to admit or to be caught snapped with their yoga mats. David Beckham found that yoga helped him remain injury free, for the most part, in the latter years of his career.

You might be 18 reading this, you’re one of lucky ones, but if you’re not and, like me, you have found that life is catching up with you, slowly but surely you start piling on the pounds here and there as the nights out and the pints take their toll; the aches and pains of the day are not cured by a restless sleep. You begin to realise that the belief that you were once invincible is slowly but surely melting away.

You may have already experienced a bad injury, or you’re not satisfied with the results you have been getting at the gym; perhaps you have not been sleeping well for a long time, or you cannot find peace of mind when you get home from work. Hot Yoga is able to provide you with solutions to all these problems.

In entering Yoga-Nation on County Road, you are greeted by an oasis of calm. The music is gentle, the staff are friendly and helpful and the facilities are comfortable. There are free

refreshments, including a variety of teas and the manager Anna prepares her speciality smoothies made of bananas, avocado, spinach and a whole host of other healthy ingredients.

As I sat there and watched the first yoga class saunter out of the hot room drenched in sweat I began to worry. I’ve had two previous experiences with Yoga, and it was difficult but it didn’t turn me into a sweating mess like these poor folk. After changing the mats over in the yoga room, I was informed that the thick socks and hoody that I was wearing were not necessary for this type of workout, although I had kind of figured that out for myself.

Sheepishly I entered the room, which is heated by special, non-glow ceiling lamps and took a place at the back as to prevent any future posing embarrassment. The instructor led the class by telling us to adopt the downward facing dog pose, on all fours basically with your legs straight and hands shoulder width apart, then down into crocodile pose, then Tutankhamun and then onto a whole host of other poses that tested the strength and flexibility of my body. I found myself concentrating hard on getting the technique right and then holding my body in the desired position. This was tough.

It wasn’t long until I had turned into a sweaty mess like those poor students in the first class. I too was sweating from every part of my body and my cotton rich T-Shirt weighed twice as much as it did before I entered the room. But I felt good. For too long I have abused my body, lavishing in the convenience of fast food and alcohol and I felt as though all the toxins were draining from my body.

The class lasted over an hour and by the end of it I had used muscles in my legs, arms, core, neck, chest, shoulders, you name it, I had used it. I elongated my spine and neck muscles through effective stretching and breathing techniques, I rid my body of aches and pains in my lower back that had been troubling me for years and by the end of the class I was spent. Someone asked me how it went, I replied with a barely audible mumble “okay”.

Quite frankly, it was one of the toughest workouts I have ever done. Hot Yoga requires so much from your body and your mind. You find that the stresses of the day are replaced

by the intense focus of the techniques used. Yet throughout the whole class, there was never a point where I felt it was strenuous, or felt like it was hard graft like lifting a bench press or doing shoulder presses.

After showering and getting some fresh air, I felt stronger, more relaxed, cleaner and leaner somehow. The pressures of the day had evaporated, my aches and pains had gone, I had the good feeling you get after exercising 3 times a week and I slept like a log that night.

The superb thing about yoga is that you can use it for whatever reasons you want to. Clearing the mind, healing muscle problems, increasing strength, gaining a lean body, losing weight, increasing flexibility, releasing toxins from the body, learning about a 5000-year-old spiritual path. The only thing that is stopping you, is the overwhelming feminine image. Get past that, and you will open yourself up to an exercise routine that has powerful effects on the body and mind.

LIMITED NUMBER OF SEATS AVAILABLEWith Brazil 2014 on the horizon, Matthew McKeown takes a look at some of the players who need a big season if they’re to move in from the fringes and secure a place in England’s final World Cup squad.

If Roy Hodgson’s first year as manager of England is anything to go by, the chances of his squad for the upcoming World Cup (should the team qualify) looking too dissimilar to those that struggled to make an impact at the last two major tournaments are pretty slim. However, with 23 white shirts to print names onto there remains an opportunity for several fringe hopefuls to play their way into the manager’s thinking, and at the very least, earn themselves an all-expenses paid holiday to one of the most beautiful countries on Earth. They could even get to miss a penalty in a shoot-out if one of the regulars goes down with cramp.

Scott Parker, Danny Welbeck and Joleon Lescott all featured regularly at Euro 2012 thanks to injuries, suspensions and racism disputes involving expected starters, and so there’s no reason for others not to believe that fortune could favour them if they maintain a high enough standard of performance throughout the

season.

Ten players who’ll have to fight to make their World Cup dream a reality:

Jack Butland

Not many players make their senior international debut having never played higher than League Two domestically, but such is 20-year-old Butland’s reputation within the England setup that he became the country’s youngest-ever first team goalkeeper in a friendly match against Italy in Bern, Switzerland, three days before making his first competitive start for Birmingham City.A series of eye-catching displays across two loan spells at Cheltenham Town earned Butland a place in Team GB’s starting XI at last year’s Olympics, as well as a backup role in Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad. However, with the youngster now having joined up with his new club Stoke City after a £3.3m January transfer, he could find his chances to impress are

limited by the form of established no.1 Asmir Begovic.

Tom Cleverly

With nine caps to his name already, 23-year-old Cleverly appears to be well thought of amongst England’s coaching staff, but a stop-start 2011/12 campaign led to him missing out on that summer’s European Championship, and another season of infrequent appearances at Manchester United could yet lengthen the odds of him making the cut this time around.A player of real finesse, Cleverly is capable of improving England’s much-maligned ability to retain possession, which will be key if they’re to have any sort of impact on a tournament held in the sort of hot and humid climate that English footballers are not known for performing well in. The worry for Hodgson will be how much game time Cleverly is given by new United manager David Moyes, with the midfielder having featured in only 22 league games under previous boss Alex Ferguson in 2012/13.

Adam Johnson

When Johnson joined Sunderland from Manchester City in August 2012, he did so against the wishes of then-City manager Roberto Mancini, who considered the winger an important member of his squad but couldn’t guarantee him a bigger role than the one he’d been restricted to throughout his two and a half years at the Etihad.Still feeling the disappointment of his omission from Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad, Johnson made

the £10m move believing that increased playing opportunities on Wearside would enable him to cement a place as an England regular, only to find his form adversely affected by the rigours of playing week-in, week-out for a team struggling at the bottom end of the Premier League.

Adam Lallana

There was a time not so long ago when short, slightly-built footballers were viewed with suspicion by academy coaches and scouts across England, who would routinely favour size and athletic prowess over more technical attributes such as skill and vision. Now, having seen Xavi and Andres Iniesta act as vital cogs in the Spain and Barcelona teams that have dominated at international and club level since 2008, English football has been forced to change its stance on smaller players. One of the early beneficiaries of this paradigm shift could be five foot eight inch attacking midfielder Lallana, who at 25 has already played more than 200 competitive games and proven himself capable of adapting his game to the physical demands of the country’s top three divisions.Strong early season performances for Southampton earned him a first senior call up last September – he was an unused substitute for the World Cup qualifier against Ukraine – but he’ll need show an ability to consistently score and create goals in the Premier League if he’s to mount a serious challenge for a place on Hodgson’s final party list.

Leon Osman

Like Lallana, 32-year-old

Osman is another whose chances of international recognition have been boosted by the country’s acceptance of the need to embrace technical players. He made his England debut in a 4-2 friendly defeat to Sweden, aged 31, before playing his first competitive game in a World Cup qualifier against San Marino.Throughout his early career at Everton Osman was often shifted out wide to accommodate more physically imposing players such as Lee Carsley, Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini, but in recent seasons he’s been allowed a more central role in which he has thrived, and despite his advancing years he posted career best numbers for goals and league appearances in 2012/13.Although his emergence from under the radar has probably come too late for him to become a squad regular, another strong season at club level would see Osman remain a viable contender for a place on the standby list.

Micah Richards

Considering he made his full

England debut in 2006, it’s hard to believe that Richards is still only 25 years old. Equally surprising is the fact that a player who was good enough to become England’s youngest-ever defender seven years ago has gone on to win just 13 caps since.Frozen out without explanation by Fabio Capello, Richards was brought back into the fold when Hodgson replaced the Italian in February 2012, but despite impressive domestic form at Manchester City he was not selected for the European Championships. The defender was later criticised for reacting to Hodgson’s decision by refusing to be placed on standby.Assuming Richards’ tantrum has been forgiven, he still has a lot to prove after missing virtually all of last season. Since then Kyle Walker has emerged as the biggest threat to Glen Johnson’s right-back spot, and there are no guarantees of game time at

Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte which holds 64,000 fans

City either, where positional rival Pablo Zabaleta was named player of the season for 2012/13.

Jack Rodwell

Lauded as a future star from a very early age, persistent injuries have thus far prevented Rodwell from turning obvious potential into a refined skillset. Now 22, he is at an age where he needs to establish himself as a player who can be relied upon by putting together a sustained run of form and fitness.Last summer’s £12m transfer to Manchester City showed that despite his well-documented injury problems, there remains hope that Rodwell will develop into a quality footballer, and rightly so. A combination of athleticism and composure led to comparisons with Rio Ferdinand throughout his youth, but having since shown an ability to run at the heart of defences and an eye for goal, he has recently been deployed in more advanced midfield positions to great effect.Rodwell always seems to have

the faith of his managers, and so it isn’t difficult to imagine him featuring prominently in Hodgson’s thinking if he can keep himself fit – that’s a very big ‘if ’ though.

Chris Smalling

After a meteoric rise which saw him go from non-league hopeful at Maidstone to title winner and England international at Manchester United, 23-year-old Smalling finds himself on the outskirts for both club and country thanks to an injury-ravaged 2012/13.Quick, powerful and comfortable in possession, Smalling is a quality option both centrally and on the right-hand side of defence, and with Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic no longer up to playing two games a week, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to remind Hodgson of his considerable talents should he manage to stay fit this season.

Daniel Sturridge

Having grown frustrated in his role as wide forward at Chelsea, Sturridge made a £12m move to Liverpool in January with assurances that manager Brendan Rodgers would view him predominantly as an out and out striker. The Reds boss made good on his word, and Sturridge duly scored 11 goals in 16 appearances for his new club, while also chipping in with five assists.Going into the new season as England’s most in-form striker, the 23-year-old will almost certainly be given a chance to prove his worth at international level when World Cup qualifying resumes in September.

Wilfried Zaha

Following a season which saw him play a starring role in Crystal Palace’s successful promotion push, make his England debut and secure a £15m transfer to Manchester United, winger Zaha definitely has momentum on his side as he looks to force his way into Hodgson’s plans for Brazil.Born in the Ivory Coast, last season’s Championship player of the year is still eligible to represent his birth nation due to the fact his lone senior England cap came in a non-competitive match, but with new United manager Moyes already singling out the 20-year-old for praise after his performances in pre-season, it seems unthinkable that England’s coaching staff would be prepared to let him slip through the net.

LIVERPOOL WATERS SCHEME: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE OUTRIGHT AMBITION OF THE PEEL GROUP’S PLANAfter years of discussions, and a disruptive recession it has been announced that the Peel Group has been given permission to begin work on the regeneration of North Liverpool Docks. The project will take 30 years to complete and is seen as one of the biggest steps in bringing Liverpool back onto the world stage. But while there are many reasons to be happy with the proposal, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration too. What will this regeneration do for the city and how will it affect its populace?

Liverpool was once the UK`s second city, it was busy with trade from all the nations of the world. Shipping merchants, insurers, manufacturers, traders came from all over the globe to experience the opportunities that Liverpool had to offer. The decline of the empire following World War 2 however signalled the beginning of the end for the city. The decline was further compounded by the recession in the late 70s. Recent

years have shown more promise.

Over the past two decades Liverpool has seen a staggered, yet steady approach to regeneration. The flagship redevelopment of the Albert Dock has acted as a blueprint for success for future transformations. The area has brought tourists and locals alike to an area where once you would not like to be found walking alone at night. It has brought with it wealth in the form of new businesses, new museums and tourist revenue. There were fears of course that the Alert Dock would no longer be held in high esteem because of the new Liverpool ONE development, but the preservation of Liverpool’s first Dock (near John Lewis) illustrates the seamless transistion and coupling of two beautiful areas that have the ability to work in tandem.

It is this blueprint for success that Peel must adopt in order to consider the Liverpool Waters scheme a success. At the moment, the proposed area, which includes the worlds first dry dock is a historic testament to an era when Liverpool

was once great and wealthy. But as Lyndsey Ashworth, Peel Development Director, mentioned, when asked about the chance of losing the city’s UNESCO World Heritage status, ‘It is simply not right to expect derelict parts of cities with such a rich history to stand still and be fossilised.’

Therefore, for such a vast area, a large development is requred and the Liverpool Waters scheme is designed to tie in with Wirral Waters and the Ocean Gateway further improving the trade avenues between Liverpool and Manchester, the North West’s two biggest cities.

21million square feet of office space will be created, attracting existing and new business. Importantly there will be an ‘Enterprize Zone’ supporting new business by offering a potential 100% discount in business rates for five years. The government is supporting the provision of superfast broadband in the area as well as for the Wirral Waters scheme.

23,000 new apartments will be created, as the city becomes a more attractive place to work and live, thus the population is expected to increase. Furthermore, an additional cruise line terminal

twelve07.com Autumn 37

Work has already begun in the area

Page 38: Twelve 07 Issue 1

pitfalls. The public purse across the UK is very tight at the moment and is expected to remain so for the forthcoming years. Private investment is welcomed with open arms and Liverpool’s City Council is no different. The problem however is that there may be occassions during the regeneration that the Council may be held to ransom on certain decisions.

Recently, the architects of the Museum of Liverpool was fined for impeding the view of the Port of Liverpool building. The process was so far along by that point that the building had an effect on the skyline that was irreversible. Similar problems could transcend into this redevelopment, we have a number of spectacular features in that area which need protection and responsible preservation is the key to maintaining it.

In order for this project to do that, Peel is projecting a much needed creation of 20,000 new jobs. What is particularly impressive about this

bringing extra tourist revenue to the area will be built, along with four hotels to allow our guests to take in the sites and sounds of a beautiful, cultural, historic and dynamic city.

A mono-rail is being considered between the city centre and the area helping link the two areas to prevent one becoming abondoned in favour of the new and exciting. The mono-rail will allow quick access to the airport improving on the city’s current rail service to South Parkway which requires a further bus from the station.

It is a very exciting times for the city which will see more investment from private companies and individuals alike, bringing more money to the Vauxhall area which was recently announced as one of the poorest areas in Europe by GDP. But with such a large investment by a private company, there are potential

is that it will span across a range of disciplines from manufacturing, service, legal, procurement, planning, engineering, IT, and HR. There will be a job for almost every skillset and it will ensure that a generation is not affected by the recession.

Creating jobs is excellent, sustaining them is crucial and may prove more difficult. More offices have been created in the City since 2008, Victorian buildings have been neglected in favour of modern office environments. Yet if you take a walk through a number of the office spaces within the city you will notice that their facililities are not being fulfilled. From empty offices in the old India Buildings to large floors of empty space in the Plaza, it is almost enough to ask the question - do we need more office space? It is a similar situation with apartments and retail space. Businesses will need support and incentives to move to the area, and perhaps the Enterprize Zone will be one of the standout proposals in helping

business grow and succeed in the area.

There were similar concerns when Peel created the Trafford Centre in the late 90s. Many said because of the location, shops in Manchester’s city centre would suffer as shoppers moved away from the area to the newer more interesting shopping centre. However, Manchester City Centre has thrived in tandem with the Trafford Centre illustrated by

Selfridges, Debenhams, Harvey Nichols all having a store in each location. And Peel envisaged that this would occur and is using that success as a formula for Liverpool.Preventing vacant offices it is vital to attract a number of core

industries to the City. Liverpool’s focus could incorporate a healthy IT and finance sector. At present ServiceSource employs over 200 people in the city centre and is a multi-billion dollar IT company. Attracting, Google, Ebay, Salesforce that are now in Dublin would provide further jobs and accomodate the unused office space. Other IT companies would follow suit should we attract organisations of that ilk.

Furthermore, investment, finance firms such as Rathbones act as a model for success. Historically based out of Liverpool it has sustained business and weathered the recession. Attracting financial organisations and perhaps a banking sector which is not transfixed within London will allow Liverpool to utilise the well educated university students from the city’s establishments.

This project is a huge boost for the Liverpool economy and a massive coup for the council. They have done a fantastic job over the last couple of decades to improve the city and If Liverpool ONE helped the city become the UK’s most visited city outside of London and the fastest growing economy outside of London, imagine what Peel Ports’ investment will do. From the other side of the water, the skyline has the bourgeoning potential of a world city. The view has changed considerably since 2008 but has beautifully incorporated the modernism of skyscrapers with the archaic cathedrals and docks. The developement will ensure the city will once again be among the elite, competing with Hong Kong, New York and Singapore.

DOES LINKEDIN® SIGNAL THE EXTINCTION OF THE RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT?

Excellent employees are important for any business to run smoothly whether increasing staff numbers or if you have lost a key member of staff to a competitor it is important to replace or hire the best candidates quickly. But with the growing popularity of LinkedIn® and many organisations adopting in-house recruitment teams how important are recruitment consultants in an ever changing business environment?

They’re your best friends when you need them and your worst enemy when they bring you the bad news when you didn’t get the job. Everyone has at some stage had an experience with a recruitment consultant, but despite introductions of websites such as Linkedin, they remain an essential component in finding clients the best candidates and candidates the best roles.

Recruitment consultants at REED are experts in their field, trained over a three year period in their industry sector, they have the capability to advise on what is best for their client, their organisation and for the candidate. Reed hire people with a consultative approach to their work, nurture that approach and perfect it to ensure the best results for their clients and candidates.

Established for over 50 years REED has weathered many a recession, experienced how the workplace has changed and has adapted to technological advances. reed.co.uk is the most popular private job site in the UK with over 80,000 application made every day and it is perfectly placed to find the best candidates and monitor how the job market

is progressing.

In January 2013 there were more jobs posted on reed.co.uk than there had been in the previous 5 years, a sign that there is an impending and elusive light at the end of the tunnel in the hunt for the end of the recession. But with the popularity of LinkedIn growing along with more companies employing in house recruiters, how necessary are recruitment agencies going to be in the future?

There have been a spate of recruitment companies opening up in the last few years, utilising LinkedIn as their database, scouring the website for one good candidate that may be interested in moving. Littering your news page with details of jobs that you will never be suitable for, nor will any of your friends or colleagues. The consultants seem interested only by making a quick fee and chancing their arm as an independent recruitment company and do not consider the impacts to the client and whether the level of service provided encapsulates the best candidates available. LinkedIn has its limits, it is useful for finding candidates that have specific skill sets that have not looked for a job in over 10 years and are unlikely to be found on any recruitment database who may be looking for a job if the consultant contacts him or her at the right time in their life. It is useful for a head-hunter that can understand the structure of a company and

find directors that are seeking a new challenge and more money for very specific roles.

But to provide clients with the best service possible, a consultant must be able to utilise LinkedIn, a database and job adverts in tandem. It is the only way to ensure that the best candidate for the role are found. So where does this leave clients that have in-house recruitment consultants?

Some larger companies throughout Merseyside have made use of internal recruiters, paying a base salary to go out and find the appropriate candidate for the role. Along with the salary they pay to the employee, costs of advertising a role on a variety of websites are also added, as is the time spent on setting up new starter packs, contracts and handling rejection from candidates if commitment has not been assessed.

In house recruiters reduce the amount of fees paid to recruitment agencies throughout the year but the process of recruitment remains a costly business. A leading accountancy firm recently reported that for an organisation to lose an employee it costs approximately the salary of that person to replace them if they do not work quickly and diligently. As we all know, in business, time is money.

twelve07.com Autumn 40

Page 41: Twelve 07 Issue 1

Therefore, employing in house recruiters who may not have access to similar resources nor have reputations as good as REED cannot have the same capabilities in attracting the best candidates as a trained recruitment consultant.

That is precisely why excellent recruitment firms such as REED are perfectly placed to provide candidates to organisations with a variety of needs. With over 30 different specialisms from sales to finance the consultants have a pipeline of candidates that have been interviewed, assessed and tested for commitment. Companies do not have time to scour LinkedIn, write adverts, respond to countless of unsuccessful candidates that have applied. They have their own service to provide to their clients and would rather be doing that than sourcing for candidates.

In as much as LinkedIn is a successful website, and a useful tool for recruitment consultants to have at their disposal, it is not a substitute for effective recruitment processes and expert consultancy provided by REED.

Schmoozing is one of the most important skills in business. Ensuring that you are winning new business and retaining key clients is of paramount importance to your organisation. Competition for clients is more important than ever as companies battle through a tough recession, protecting their clients vigorously. Competition lies around every corner, more businesses are started during a recession than any other time.

Companies are finding new and inventive ways of providing their clients with an experience they will never forget. Events are getting bigger, the tab for the night’s free drinks is becoming more expensive and the desire to keep every client happy is an obsession. Corporate events organised after a long week at work can often be a good occasion to

touch base with your clients, have a few drinks and talk business, but is this enough?

If you have a database, a list or you can reel off your clients from memory, then have a think of who your key clients are, those that give you regular business. The ones you want to keep hold of, those that if your competitors knew about them they would target, or are already targeting. Are you doing enough to keep them happy? Are you doing more than your competition?

If you want to keep your key clients happy, or would like to target new clients, there is one company that can supply you with the resources necessary to do just that. Initio Interactive has over 40 years business experience and know exactly what it takes to help you entertain your clients. Initio

Interactive work with sporting institutions around the globe to supply you with bespoke, memorable, intimate packages allowing you to share a long lasting experience with your clients that will guarantee loyalty, a closer relationship and a long-standing commitment to you and your organisation.

organisation.

I was not disappointed as the range of events they offer is unbelievable. Booking events with Initio is easy and hassle free. The team cannot do enough for you to make sure every detail is covered.”

Initio Interactive know that you’re busy, which is why it has dedicated account managers to assist in the smooth running

of organising your package. On the day, Initio Interactive ensures that you have access to an event manager and hostess staff ensuring all your needs are looked after so that the only thing you need to concentrate on is your guests.

Events like these are a big commitment, but vital to your business’ success. Initio Interactive understands how important it is for you to stay one step ahead of the competition and keep that key client happy, which is why it has flexible payment packages to suit your needs. This allows you to experience some of the greatest events that the world has to offer, at a price that you can afford.

Working with Initio Interactive could see you experience some of the world’s greatest sporting events. You could be at the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, or the Champions League final, rugby internationals such as England versus Australia on 2nd November 2013 at Twickenham, or perhaps you would like to rub shoulders

with the rich and famous and attend a VIP experience at a Leicester Square film premier?

Auction provides the fastest route to selling a property. The whole process, from instruction through to completion, can take as few as eight weeks. Sutton Kersh is one of the leading auction houses in Merseyside.

So far this year it has sold over three hundred and seventy properties and generated total

Sutton Kersh is one of Liverpool’s leading auctioneers. James Kersh speaks to Twelve 07 Magazine about the process and benefits of buying at auction and offers useful tips to find the best property for you.

BUYING AT AUCTION

Obtain a catalogue: Property auctioneers usually release a printed catalogue three to four weeks prior to auction day which contains details of all of the properties for sale. Call them and ask for a copy to be posted to you. In the meantime, you should also be able to view full property details on the auctioneer’s website.

Arrange viewings: All potential auction buyers are advised to carry out their own due diligence checks prior to bidding on a lot at auction. Viewing a property is a good way to satisfy yourself of its condition and to get a feel for the area it is in. All viewings should be arranged through the auctioneer and

proceeds exceeding twenty five million pounds across four auction sales. Sutton Kersh work regularly with private sellers, investors, estate agents, housing associations, and public bodies with property assets.

As always, price is vital to success and as a long established multi-disciplined

firm Sutton Kersh is uniquely placed to monitor market conditions to ensure they get this right. Ultimately, demand will decide the true value of a property sold at auction which is why it is important vendors choose an auctioneer that consistently attracts high attendances so that bidding wars can be capitalised on.

What is the process of buying at auction?

not directly through the seller. Some auction houses offer accompanied viewings which are helpful as they allow you to get a professional steer from an expert.

Arrange for a survey to be carried out: Mortgage lenders will demand a valuation report is prepared by a surveyor to satisfy themselves of the value of the property before agreeing finance conditions. In cases where properties are in need or renovation works it is advised that a structural survey is commissioned by potential purchasers before making an offer or bid.

Arrange finance: A winning bidder must pay a pre-agreed

deposit (this varies by auction house) when the gavel falls. The remaining monies must then be paid in full usually within the next twenty eight days. If you are funding the purchase through a mortgage lender then you must have an offer in principle agreed before the day of the auction. It is advised that you complete your application as soon as possible to allow time for a survey to be carried out. Bridging Finance firms give access to quick finance whilst a more long-term solution is being agreed. Often an offer in principle from a Bridging Finance firm can be obtained within twenty four to forty eight hours and funds are made available soon after this so it is an option worth exploring.

Sutton Kersh’s next auction will take place on the 4th September at the Liverpool City Centre Marriott Hotel from 12noon. Entires are now being invited up until the 20th September for its 17th October auction. To make an enquiry please call Sutton Kersh Auctions on 0151 207 6315.

Read legal documents: Legal packs containing special conditions of sale, title deeds, leases, office copy entries, searches and replies to pre contract enquiries will be made available for you to read prior to the auction. If you already have a solicitor then you may also want to ask their advice. When you bid on a property you are deemed to have read these documents so it is important that you take the time to do so before the auction.Research solicitors: if you don’t already have a preferred solicitor then research local firms prior to the auction so that you are in a position to proceed with the sale quickly if you are the winning bidder.

Register for the auction: Some auction houses require you to register before bidding at an auction. Often this can be done before the day of the auction so give the auction house a call to find out if this is necessary.

Bidding: Bids can be made

before, during or after an auction. If you are unable to bid in person at the auction you can often register an absentee bid either in the form of a telephone or a proxy bid. The auction house will ask for your maximum bid and then you can either bid on a telephone via an agent (telephone bidding) or the auctioneer can bid on your behalf up to your maximum bid value (proxy bidding).

Auction day: If you are planning to bid on a property then you must bring two forms of idenfitication in the form of a passport or drivers license and proof of address. If you win the lot you bid on then a binding contract is formed on the fall of the gavel and you must pay the required deposit before leaving the auction room – cash will not be accepted. The auction house will then notify of the date by which the remaining monies must be paid.

Benefits of Auction

Cheaper deals:

Buying at auction is generally cheaper than buying through an estate agent.

The completion time is much faster:

At auction the conventional drawn out process of buying a house is condensed into a matter of minutes. When the gavel falls, a legally binding contract between the purchaser and the vendor is formed.

Chain free:

Properties sold at auction are not part of a chain, so the winning bidder need not worry about the chain falling through.

Sutton Kersh Auction Team: Cathy Holt (auction manager), Katie Donohue (auction co-ordinator), James Kersh (director), Andrew Binstock (auctioneer), Alexa Taylor (auction co-ordinator) and Ashleigh Moore (auction co-ordinator).

Michelangelo’s Restaurant, which is located at the Blenheim Lakeside Hotel, opposite Sefton Park’s picturesque lake, is celebrating its first birthday by launching a brand new menu. The eatery, which provides guests with an intimate and inviting setting, opened its doors in South Liverpool back in July 2012 and has since been serving central and southern Italian dishes in what feels like a warm and welcoming trattoria. However, chief executive Conor O’Donovan has now teamed up with new Executive Head Chef Wayne Janisch to incorporate a variety of Meditterianian and classic British dishes to the menu to appeal to even more diners. Conor said: “We have had a fantastic 12 months at the restaurant and there was no better way to celebrate than to look at the menu and give it a whole new look, by keeping what works and adding some new dishes that we know will appeal to our existing and new diners. “We’ve done a lot of market

research and discovered that there is a real need for not only authentic Italian dishes, but also good hearty English and delicious Spanish inspired cuisine in this part of the city. We have the advantage of being in a really nice setting and we’ve now sourced the best chefs around to offer a truly desirable offering.” The menu now features dishes to suit all tastes and palettes from pizza and pastas, sharing boards for group bookings and English specials such as Posh Fish and Chips, Steak and Ale Pie, and Homemade Scouse. Michelangelo’s, which has just 30

covers, will also continue to serve its renowned locally sourced prime cuts of beef on a hot stone, which has become a popular favorite in the past year. Conor added: “For me, it’s all about the overall experience and having managed a restaurant previously, I know about the high standards and the expectations that diners have. We are creating food that we really care about.”

Grab your passport, we’re going on a journey around the worldEver wondered what it would be like to taste every beer in the world?

Sure, you would have a beer gut bigger than Jimmy-Five-Bellies by the end of it but it would be your trophy!

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be possible, there would always be some obscure beer brewed in someone’s shed that would escape your quivering taste buds, but alas! The next best thing has arrived.

The Around The World in 80 Beers bar offers you a refreshing choice of over 120 ales for you to try. And over the last few weeks the Twelve 07 team have taken it upon themselves to try, test and rate every beer in the Bierkeller and gain our passports to beer freedom. Here’s how we did it….

This was a scientific experiment

with spreadsheets, numbers, quantifiable data, but somewhere along the challenge (possibly Poland, the land of the strong beer) some of it was lost.

Nevertheless, our worthy group battled through with a different strategy, a more simple rating strategy. The four of us, who all like different types of beers rated them on our personal subjections, because at the end of the day, when you’re choosing your first pint

after a tough week in work, and you’re waiting for it to be poured to perfection for the momentous occasion when the amber nectar first touches your lips, it’s a personal choice.

Mike Craven prefers a classic long lasting taste but not too stalePeter Johnson is partial to a fresh, light beer like Coors. James Bray likes a classic English ale, the kind you can set your watch by.Steven Seddon like a stale, strong ale.

Rather than do a definitive lisit of 80 to 1 we have done a run down of our top 20 along with some special mentions and awards for other beers.

Around the world in 80 Beers

Page 55: Twelve 07 Issue 1

20. Kronenbourg 16645.5%This French fancy is a mainstream lager in the UK and it is understandable, a solid tasting beer without the staleness.

19.Amstel 5%Exported to over 75 countries worldwide, Amstel pride themselves on the longevity of their brewing process. Creating a distinctive taste which is very enjoyable.

18. Castle Lager 5%The only African lager to make it into the top 20. Be careful when you pour it as it is a fizzy one. Castle offers a light and refreshing taste, which is required on a hot sunny day in South Africa.

17. Holsten Pils 5%The Germans are among some of the finest ale producers and drinkers on the planet. With Holsten Pils they haven’t disappointed. It is the kind of lager you could sit and drink all night.

16. Tiger 5%Exported from Singapore, the profile of Tiger has risen in recent years. A very carbonated beer lager, with a light taste.

15. Erdinger 5.3%A classic example of a classic beer. Smells of wet straw and has a solid wheat flavour with a touch of sugar.

14. Pilsner Urquel 4.4%Tastes sweet with a bitter finish, very refreshing. Similar to Ho-slten Pils, it’s an all night drink.

13. Corona 4.6%This divided opinion more than any other beer. It was given exceptionally high scores by the contigent of weak lager drinkers and low scores by those that like a more solid, less watery taste. In at 13, the Mexican Corona.

12. Modelo 4.5%Another Mexican entry, Modelo pips Corona to the post with its similar light and fruit taste. Pop a lime in it, go wild.

11. Hoegarden 4.9%Very pale, hazy beer flavours from orange peel provide a sweet and sour citrus taste. Smells beautiful, perfect during autumn and winter.

Continue the journey....

Win a casket on completion of the passport

Page 56: Twelve 07 Issue 1

10. Veddett 5%A blonde, light well hopped beer. pours well into a glass and takes the 10 spot for its light dry taste.

9. Nils Oscar God Lager 5.3%The Swedes come good with this beer creating an aromatic hop brew with an egotistical name .

8.Brahma 4.3%Brazilians are famous for a number of things but not their beers. This however has every right to be in the top ten. Order it on draft and enjoy.

7.Budvar 5%The second Czech beer to make it into the top 20. It’s known fully as Budvar Budweiser so it has a competitor with a big spending communications budget but even without that this is a beer holds its own and is a firm favourite in the Czech Republic and with us here in Liverpool.

6. Lucky Buddha 4.8%So we probably fell in love with the bottle more than anything. Where else do you see a bottle made in the shape of a fat man?Make sure you rub his belly before you drink for good-luck.

5.Cusquena 5%Brewed since 1911 from the region of the Incas in Peru, this is the kind of lager that reminds you of holidays abroad, sitting on a balcony in the warm evening sun. Great tasting, fresh and sharp.

4. Super Bock 5.1%Winner of over 30 awards, Super Bock is an internationally reknowned lager. Sweet malt and cereal grain, goes down a treat in hot or cold weather.

3. KirinHeading into the top three it was always going to be difficult but Japanese beer, Kirin proved worthy. The sharp taste and aromatic flavours ensure that this beer is one to enjoy over and over again. The Japanese are not

necessarily famous for their beer brewing but with Kirin you will experience a true oriental delight.

2. Estrella 5.2%A magnificently fresh, unique and bold tasting lager. The Catalans have really out done themselves with this one. Brewing since 1876, the many years have allowed the lager to be perfected and the taste is magnificent. Estrella is a diverse beer in that it can be drank in hot and cold weather and will offer that crisp, refreshment required after a hard day in work.

Page 57: Twelve 07 Issue 1

And the Winner is...Quilmes Cerveza 4.9%

It’s a latin 1, 2, as the Argentinian beer takes the top spot. More famous for their excellent steaks and tricky (cheating) football players, it was quite a surprise when we all agreed that Quilmes was the best lager that we tasted.

Fruity, sweet and crisp, Quilmes gives the ultimate ‘Aahhh’ factor as a first drink of the evening. At 4.9% it is not the stron-gest of the beers that we tried. This allows the crisp, slightly lingering sweet taste to have the desired affect.

With averaged rating of 87.5% we recommend that if you’re going to gain your passport at the Around the World in 80 beers bar this beer should be high on the list to try.

We set out on this journey to find the best beers in the Around The World in 80 Beers bar. It is unlikely that you will agree with all of the decisions, but that is the beauty of it. There is a whole collection of fine ales for you to try at your leisure and you will no doubt find your own favourite.

Beatle Mania Hits Lantern Theatre Liverpool

BEATLE MAL: the shadow that appeared behind the act you’ve known for all these years

Mal Evans was the Beatles roadie and also arguably their closest friend. He was so much more than just the big guy who lugged the gear from venue to venue. He travelled the world on tour with the Fab 4, took part in their recording sessions, he was there when they met Bob Dylan and Elvis and when their lives were threatened in the Philippines and when they studied with Maharishi in India. He lived with Paul McCartney as his housekeeper in 1967 and there is good reason to believe he helped write the title song of ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts’ Club Band!’ As manager

of Apple Records, he played a pivotal role in signing the Beatles protégés Badfinger as well as producing their records. To the boys he was an invaluable travelling companion and close confidante. On the crazy ride that was Beatlemania, it is doubtful they would have survived without him.1963 was the year of the meteoric rise to fame of the Beatles, so exactly 50 years on it is quite appropriate that this new imaginative drama,

with original music, should be presented to a wider audience.

BEATLE MAL will be touring the UK & Ireland in Autumn 2013, with a Liverpool date at Lantern Theatre, Blundell Street on Saturday 28th September.

If you’re looking for an interesting alternative to your usual evening’s entertainment head to Shiverpool. The tours operate all year round and they are the original and most famous theatrically led ghost and history tours in the city. They are not for the faint hearted. With Halloween around the corner, this is the perfect opportunity to book a tour that will have your heart pumping and your hands shaking.

Perfect for a couple, for a corporate occasion or for a terrifying experience with your friends, Shiverpool has something for everyone. With a variety of tours to choose from, The `Auld City Shivers Tour` begins at the Victoria Monument where an enthusiastically, dead leader meets you. Following

the brief introductions the group is led through the oldest city streets, where other tour guides join the group along the way. Similarly dressed in 19th century attire with the complexion of a corpse, it is impossible to not begin to feel uneasy.

The guides lead their `goblins` to various landmarks around the city as you hear about horrific events occurring in Liverpool over the previous centuries. The group are then led to an underground maze of tunnels, leading to a vault

where terrible things have happened to one gentleman in particular. Hearing his tales of woe, you begin to wonder if you will survive the eerie maze, or even begin to remember the way back.

The tours will have you screaming, screeching; wincing and out of breath as you begin to worry for your own saftey. Supernatural happenings are not uncommon on these tours and only a handful of survivors are able to tell of their experiences aftwards.

For a truly terrifying experience visit www.shiverpool.co.uk or call 0151 709 2030
