Thank you for your ministry in serving our parish family!

We extend our sympathy

to Jean Kurth (wife) and the

family and friends of parishioner

Ervin Kurth who recently passed away.

We extend our sympathy

Bishop David L. Ricken has reinstated the Sunday Mass obligation effective this weekend, September 19-20. With Christian joy and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the time has come for us to return to worship God at Mass on Sundays. Even with the reinstatement of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, it is important to note there are occa-sions when the obligation does not apply, for example, if individuals in their well-formed conscience believe that going into public places would place their health or the health of their loved ones in serious jeopardy. For more information, go to the following website www.gbdioc.org/sundayobligationreinstatement.

Welcome Back To Mass!

No RSVP required.

Our guidelines for attending Mass include the following:

▪ Mask required

▪ Temperature taken

▪ Appropriate physical distancing

▪ No singing

▪ One entrance in; separate entrance out

In that way,

they have the

potential to

increase our

compassion,

pull us all

closer together,

and force us to

grow.

Unfortunately, we in the west have somehow managed to

treat Covid-19 like it’s a conflict with society rather than a

conflict with nature. Doing so gives us a false sense of

power and someone to blame. It enables us to avoid

accepting our own human fragility and vulnerability. Half

the country blames the democrats for blowing this thing

out of proportion and even creating a “false pandemic”

and the other half blames President Trump and his min-

ions for not taking it seriously by leading a united effort to

flatten the curve. Does anyone else see the madness in all

of this? Covid-19 is not a conflict with society, it’s a

conflict with nature. Taking sides and blaming each other is

as counter-productive and as mutually destructive as when

the Hebrews and the Canaanites blamed each other for the

drought. Nothing good comes from this. Some would even

say it is the devil’s playground.

That brings us to the second question: What does this say

about the human condition? Well, I’ll suggest that the

answer offers both an invitation and an opportunity for

people of faith. It says that humanity, at this particular point

in time and space, would rather turn anger toward each

other than turn compassionately toward God. We would

rather deny our own human vulnerability than admit that

we are not in control of the universe. More than ever in our

lifetimes, we, Christian people of faith, are called to lead the

way, to be role models of unity and hope, and to show the

world how joyful it can be to stop blaming and start loving.

Journey well and pray always.

Peace,

Deacon Steve

Dear Fellow Pilgrims,

In the summer of 1985, back

before online classes were even a

Jetsons-style dream, I sat in Dr.

Schneider’s summer course on

Critical Approaches to

Literature. Holy man, what was I

thinking? As a twenty-one-year-

old college senior deciding what to do with my summer, I

had to choose between Critical Approaches to Literature or

Appreciation of Monastic Lagers. Fortunately, the latter

was offered on evenings and weekends, so I was able to

work out the scheduling. Two things about summer

courses: 1) They were four hours long every day for four

weeks. Intense. You were going to learn something

whether you wanted to or not. And 2) the class sizes were

small, as in only nine students. There was no place to hide.

You had to show up prepared and ready to participate.

Dr. Schneider was a large, imposing man who looked more

like an iron worker than a tenured literature professor. He

flat out challenged our preconceptions about everything

and everyone. His two favorite questions about things we

read and wrote were: What is the central conflict of this

narrative? And What does this say about the human

condition? Brilliant. Having found those questions to be

both compelling and helpful when processing all of life’s

experiences, I’ve applied them to this Covidian Dystopia

we’ve been living through.

First, what is the central conflict of Covid-19? There are

five foundational conflicts: man’s conflict with self, with

others, with society, with nature, and with God. Everything

we struggle with can be categorized as one of these. So

which is the Covid-19 pandemic? Dr. Schneider would be

so disappointed if I got this question wrong. It’s an

example of man’s conflict with nature. In that regard, it is

akin to things like cancer and malaria as well as to large-

scale things such as global warming, tornados, and

wildfires. Conflicts with nature are particularly difficult to

confront because they remind us of our human

vulnerability. We can’t really blame anyone.

September is the start of our annual Ecumenical Partnership for Housing (EPH) giving campaign. A letter will be sent to all parishioners soon. EPH is a partnership with 20 area churches, The Salvation Army, Golden House and many other service providers in our community – all with the same

goal of meeting the needs of families with children experi-encing homelessness. EPH provides a pathway to self-sufficiency through transitional housing, long-term sup-portive housing, and a prevention program to avoid evic-tions that includes case management and related services to maintain housing stability. Our parish jointly sponsors the Martha House with Nativity Parish. We sponsor the lower unit and Nativity sponsors the upper unit.

There are several ways that you can help -- through prayer, financially, volunteer to be outside coordinator for our sponsored home, helping with home turnover and light maintenance, or donating items on the wish list. Wish list items are to the right of this column. For more information on volunteering, please feel free to reach out to any of the following EPH representatives from our parish. If you’d like to make a financial donation, please make checks paya-ble to EPH. Thank you.

O u r C a l l a s C a t h o l i c C i t i z e n s The protection of life and the dignity of the human person are foundational and without this, all other treatments of the human person become relative and circumstantial. We are urged to consider the church’s teachings on life from conception to natural death to help shape the moral character of our communities and society so that our children and grandchildren can continue to live in a country that is so abundantly blessed. For more information on political responsibility and guidance in the exercise of your rights and duties as participants in our democracy, call the parish office or go to www.faithfulcitizenship.org.

November 1 is All Saints’ Day. To help us celebrate, we invite our youth (and adults) to dress as a saint. To help with that, we will be collecting various “saint” props for those who wish to dress up. If you would like to donate items, they can be dropped off in the labeled bin in the hospitality area. Items that may not necessarily be used this year are still appreciated for use in future events and activities.

We will also accept candy donations for the treat bags. Thank you!

During the 10:30am Mass on November 1, those who wish can share more about their saint. After Mass, safe treat bags will be distributed.
