our parish family for a wonderful fiesta. Donut Sunday has been moved from September 3rd to

August 27th, for this great occasion. Join us for delicious food, drink, treats and games after

the 10:30 am and the 12:30 pm Masses. Donations graciously accepted will be used to support our

parish ministries.

Adorn St. Rose with Roses Would you be willing to share roses from your garden?

Vases will be provided by the three statues of our patron saint (two inside and one in front of the

Church) for anyone who would like to bring roses for this celebration.

Please be sure to take home a remembrance of St. Rose of Lima from one of the baskets located by each of

her statues.

“Apart from the cross there is no other ladder by

which we may get to heaven.” St. Rose of Lima

St. Rose of Lima, Virgin - 1617 St. Rose of Lima was born on April 20, 1586, in Lima, Peru to Gaspar de Flores, and Maria d'Olivia. She was one of ten children. As an infant she was baptized with the name Isabel. By the time she was confirmed the name Isabel had been replaced by Rose. Rose was an extraordinarily pious child; even as she was just learning to walk, her parents noted her great interest in and devotion to holy cards, statues, and crucifixes. They and others saw this as a sign that the young girl had a special relationship with God. Rose wanted to learn how to read and write, but there was nobody who was free to help her. She, like other poor children, could not afford to go to school, and her parents were illiterate. One day Rose announced to her parents: “Since no one has time to teach me things, I am going to ask Jesus to do it. He can do anything, can’t He?” The child yearned to read and write, and prayed to Jesus daily, begging Him to help her to achieve her dreams. Rose would beseech Jesus to help her with a prayer she made up herself: “Jesus, help me to know and to love you, and teach me to read and write.” Rose announced to her mother one day that it was the Child Jesus who had taught her how to read and write. Her mother did not believe her at first, but never-theless, Rose proved to her mother that she knew how to read by reading from a book about St. Catherine of Siena. The local parish priest and teacher tested her, and were amazed by the fact that this young girl who had never been to school could read and write to a very high standard. The young Rose told the following remarkable story: One day, after she had made her usual prayer to Jesus, she felt a beautiful breeze fan her. She recalled having a wonderful sensation, and saw an overflowing miraculous light. Then the Child Jesus appeared to her, beautiful and radiant. Rose stated that he was a beautiful boy and that she was not afraid, rather, she felt a great and pure love for the Child Jesus. Our Savior then drew forth a golden book and bade the young girl to read from it. She immediately could read. Jesus then drew forth a pen with paper and bade her write, and, miraculously, Rose could write. Then Jesus disappeared. Rose dedicated her life to Jesus, was devoted to the care of the needy, and known for leading a life of severe asceticism (self-discipline and avoidance of all forms of indulgence). She lived in the family home and allowed herself two hours of sleep a night, devoting many hours to prayer. She sold flowers and needlework to care for the poor and emulated Christ by wearing a silver crown upon her head with small spikes on the inside. When Rose turned 20, she was permitted to join the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued a life of extreme prayer, fasting and penance. This remarkable woman died on August 25, 1617, at the age of thirty-one. Rose has the honor of being the first person born in the Western Hemisphere to be canonized by Pope Clement in 1671. In America St. Rose of Lima's feast day is celebrated on August 23 although it is celebrated on August 30th in Peru.

REFLECTION FOR SUNDAY’S READING BE A ROCK

Peter's history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn't feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God's power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter's great profession of faith in Christ as Messiah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth. Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the failings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messiah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wisdom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. Let this be our vocation. Let us always strive to be solid ground on which the church of Jesus Christ can be founded and on which it can continue to be built. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Programa Parroquial De Vocación De La Familia
