PASTOR’S COLUMN

PARISH RAFFLE: Thanks to all those who made our most recent Fall Raffle a huge success. Thanks to all those who purchased tickets in support of our parish, those who helped to sell tickets, the Women’s Guild for serving our dinner, and all those who attended the raffle for providing such wonderful fellowship. The Winners: Gary Hruska won the $10,000, second prize was won by one of our split tickets: Kathy Mueller and Millie Alford will split $2,000, and Cindy Letourneau won the $1,000 prize. COMING EVENTS:

PARISH ALL SOULS SERVICE: On Saturday, November 2, at 7:00pm we will hold our annual All Souls Service in the church. We invite families and individuals who have lost a loved one since last All Souls Day to come and pray together for those who have died and to pray for those who continue to mourn their loss.

COMEDY NIGHT: We will again host a comedy night on Friday, January 17, 2020 in the Guild Hall. The same company will provide new comedians with clean comedy. Dinner will be a part of the event. Mark your calendars.

THE BOOK OF THE DEAD: Each year we remember our deceased loved ones in the month of Novem-ber. You can write the names of those you wish to be remembered in the Book of the Dead in the Gathering Space. We will place this book on the altar each week to remember in our prayers our de-ceased loved ones.

MONEY COUNTERS: We are in need a few more money counters to help count the collection. It could be once a month or twice a month depending on the group and the time they count. Please contact Fr. Tom if you are interested. HOUSEKEEPING POSITION: The Parish is looking for someone to do housekeeping work in the church and rectory a couple days a week. If you are interested, please submit your resume or your interest to Fr. Tom or the parish office. PARISH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS: Every year at this time we ask for people to serve on parish council. You are able to nominate any adult parish member, and you can even nominate yourself. Each year three or four members of Council can renew their terms or choose not to renew. So there may be three or four posi-tions open on Council. Consider serving your parish community by being a member of parish council. HOLY DAY MASS TIMES: After discussion with the Parish Liturgy Committee we have decided to change the Mass times for most Holy Days. At 8:00am during the school year traffic and parking here are a night-mare. So we have decided to have Mass at 12:10pm and 7:00pm on Holy Days. The 12:10pm Mass will not have music so people can make it back to work during their lunch hour. The 7:00pm Mass will remain the same. We hope this is more user friendly. This will start on All Saints Day, November 1, 2019. FUND TO REPAIR FALLEN HEADSTONES: A concerned parishioner has made a generous gift to raise up some of the fallen headstones at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The hope of this donor was that others might make donations to this fund in order to raise these stones, especially for those who have no family left to care for their graves. If you are interested in donating to this fund, please contact Fr. Tom Whitman (724-981-3232). REFLECTION ON THE READINGS: Our readings this weekend focus on being persistent in our prayer. The first reading is one in which Moses and the people are being attack by Amalek who is a very ruth-less leader. The story has Moses sending Joshua to lead the attack on Amalek. Joshua will be the one to re-place Moses as leader. Moses goes up on the hill with two other men and raises his staff, as he did over the waters of the Red Sea during the Exodus. As long as Moses keeps his arms up the Israelites have the better of the battle. When he lowers his arms the Amalekites gain the upper hand in battle. With the aid of the two men with him, Moses keeps his arms raised in prayer until the victory is in hand.

Reflection on the Readings continued… We might call to mind those people in our own lives who are great “pray-ers.” In the midst of all the

upheavals of life these people seem to find ways to bring peace to the situations that make the rest of us fran-tic. We pray today that we might grow in our ability as “pray-ers.”

In the second reading Paul is encouraging Timothy to keep preaching the Word to others – the Word of Scripture and the Word of Jesus Christ. It was thought at this time that Jesus would return very soon. Paul wants Timothy to not stop or slow down in his preaching. Paul wants everyone to preach the Word. There seemed to be an urgent need to try to convert everyone before Jesus returned. That same ur-gency of preaching is part of our responsibility as Christians today.

The gospel is another one of Luke’s stories about widows. Widows were one of the most vul-nerable people at this time. After her husband died a woman was often powerless. She had no rights and she had no man to stand up for her as her husband did. This enabled unjust people, like the judge in today’s gos-pel, to exploit these women. The persistence of the widow is at the heart of the parable today. She defeats the unjust judge, not by a physical or legal force, but by her persistence - non-violent persistence. Her persis-tence changes the judge’s attitude and he begins to treat her fairly. May our work for justice be modeled after this poor widow – persistent and non-violent.

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments Code of Conduct: The Diocese of Erie is committed to protecting the children and youth who are entrusted to its care and to ensuring that those in ministry with our young people are in right relationship with the children/youth receiving services. To share in the ministry of Christ is a great privilege as well as a tremendous respon-sibility. The privilege is the joy of sharing in the mission of Jesus Himself. The responsibility is acting in a way that conforms to the attitude and actions of Christ. In this spirit, the diocese has issued a ministerial Code of Con-duct. The code is included in the diocesan Policy for the Protection of Children, which also includes mandates for creating safe environments. To read the policy, go to https://www.eriercd.org/images/sections/childprotection/pdf/CURRENTPolicy.pdf For more information, contact Mrs. Cindy Zemcik, at the diocesan offices at 814-824-1195.
