On Sunday, Sept 29, 2019, the SPIRIT students

    Holy Martyrs El Salvador Ministry

Welcome to the second in a series of articles whose goal is to provide information in support of broadening the scope of

our Parish’s El Salvador ministry. Today’s topic is the Land and the Country.

El Salvador is a small, mountainous country located in Central America. It is approximately 2000 miles south-southwest

of Medina and is bordered by Guatemala to the north and northwest, Honduras to the north and east, Nicaragua to the

southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. It is the only country in Central America that does not border on both the

Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea and is the only country in the world named for Jesus Christ (El Salvador means The

Savior in Spanish). Although the smallest country in Central America (about the size of the state of Vermont in area), it

is also the most densely populated country in Central America with 6.45 million residents (est. 2019).

El Salvador is a seismically active land as it sits on the boundaries of the Cocos tectonic plate where it sub ducts (goes

under) the North American and Caribbean plates. Consequently, earthquakes are fairly common. There are 22

volcanoes in the country, most of which are extinct, but 6 have erupted in the last 150 years. Many of the earthquakes

occur just off shore under the Pacific Ocean, so there is often a tsunami concern accompanying the earthquakes.

The country is also impacted by hurricanes that originate in the eastern Pacific or the Caribbean basin. While only one

tropical storm (Selma in 2017) has ever made direct landfall in the country, heavy rains from other storms have resulted

in flooding and mudslides during hurricane season.

El Salvador’s climate is tropical (the country is located between 13 and 15 degrees North Latitude), and is fairly

temperature consistent year round. Temperature does vary by elevation, however. Coastal temperatures are in the

upper 80s to low 90s during the day, with nighttime lows in the upper 70s to low 80s. Temperatures in the elevations

generally are about 15 degrees cooler. There are distinct dry and wet seasons in the country. The dry season extends

from November through April; the rainy season May through October.

El Salvador’s geography consists of a coastal plain in the South and two mountain ranges, the Sierra Madre along the

Northern border and the volcanic range adjacent to the coastal plain. There is a fairly large central plateau region

between the mountain ranges. Most of the country’s population resides in the central plateau. The capital, San

Salvador, is located the central plateau and its’ metropolitan area is home to 2.4 million people. The main river in the

country is the Lempa (Rio Lempa), which is 262 miles long with 220 miles of its’ length within El Salvador. It is El

Salvador’s only navigable river and drains more than 50% of the country. On the river are four hydroelectric dams which

generate a significant amount of the power in the country. Unfortunately, the Lempa suffers from pollution due to

    industry and agricultural runoff.
