TWO COMMANDS

While Mark 16:15 contains the Great Commission, Matthew 22:37-39

contains the Great Command.

When the young lawyer approached Jesus that day, he wasn’t

interested in all the laws that would govern Christ’s disciples. He just wanted

to know which one Jesus considered to be the most important.

Jesus answered: “You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart,

with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great

commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as

yourself’” (Matt. 22:37-39).

I suggest that only when we’ve done the first of those things can we do

the second one effectively. Only to the degree that we love God with all our

being, can we effectively and consistently love our neighbor as ourselves.

In Christianity, morality is not culturally based, but instead grows out of

the very character of God. Some have wondered out loud about all the mass

killings and terrorism that has escalated to an unbelievable degree in our

modern world.

Until mankind comes to love God, he will never have proper regard for

his neighbor. Jesus really is the answer!
