• On May 1, 1915, the Lusitania left port in New York for Liverpool to across the Atlantic.

• A U-boat ,U-20 found the ship and launched a torpedo. The torpedo hit the starboard (right) side of the Lusitania.

• The Lusitania sunk within 18 minutes. • Many believe the ship sunk so fast because a

second explosion was caused by the ignition of ammunition hidden in the cargo hold.

• Of the 1,959 people on board, 1,198 died. • 159 of whom were Americans.• In 2008, divers explored the wreck of the Lusitania. On board, the divers found approximately four million U.S.-made Remington .303 bullets.

Zimmerman Telegraph• In January of 1917, British

cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. This message helped draw the United States into the war and thus changed the course of history.

• The British waited until February 24 to present the telegram to Woodrow Wilson.

• The American press published news of the telegram on March 1.

• On April 6, 1917, the United States Congress formally declared war on Germany and its allies.

What did the “Zimmermann Telegram” propose to Mexico? o That if Mexico waged war against America, it would receive German and Japanese support and could recover its “lost territories” of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
