Woman in train ‘suicide’ deathCHILTON MELLEM
An unknown woman allegedlycommitted suicide by throwingherself on a railway line in the ear-ly hours of yesterday morning.
The incident happened 200 me-tres from the Eerste River Stationat 05:20.
W/O Annacletta Mothoalo,
spokesperson of the Kleinvlei po-lice, said the woman carried twochildren with her, one a four-week-old baby and the other a one-year-old toddler.
Mothoalo said the driver of the
train claimed the woman stood inthe middle of the railway line, fac-ing the train.
“The train is a business expressand was on its way to Strand, topick up Metrorail employees,”
said Lindelo Matya, regional man-ager at Metrorail. At the time ofthe incident, it contained Metro-rail employees, but no other pas-sengers.
The train did not make its desti-
nation after the accident and alltrains heading to Strand thereaf-ter were delayed. “This was as aresult of police clearing the sceneand subsequently, trains only hadone line to travel on,” Matya said.
He confirmed that the driver ofthe train and the Metrorail em-ployees on the train have receivedtrauma counselling.

A shebeen turned church is nowno longer a place where search-ing souls can buy spirits, butrather receive the Holy Spirit.
This new church in Nimrod Cres-cent,Conifers, opened it’s doors lastSunday for the first time, aftermonths of preparation.
Local resident Colin Aranes ex-plains how he bought the propertyas an investment while he wasworking at the airport. After losinghis job five years ago, he tried start-ing his own business from thishouse, making fireplaces and braaiareas. Aranes says his businessfailed due to a lack of focus and ad-mits to being a heavy drinker then.
“When things did not work out, Iturned to alcohol.”
Aranes transformed the house in-to a shebeen.
“At the time, my main focus wasmaking money and nothing else.When I lost my job, I was drinkinga lot. I lost my family and it felt likeI had lost everything.”
In an effort to reunite with hisfamily, he rented out the shebeen toa friend.
“There’s a lot of money in sellingalcohol but I lost my family and atthat point, I didn’t care about any-thing else.”
“Life as a shebeen owner is tough.
I had guns pointed in my face, gang-sters attacked me. I was a generalfor the devil,” Aranes said.
At a time when he was at an all-time low, Aranes said he fell to hisknees and cried out to the Lord forhelp.
“I gave my life there and then tothe Lord. I was still drunk, but Godaccepts you, no matter what stateyou are in,” he said with a smile.
A suggestion by his youngerbrother, Hilary, a minister, sawAranes start his own car rentalbusiness. Today he is the CEO of hisown business, called Drive Direct.
“When I turned my life around, Istarted approaching people, askingthem for forgiveness. Peoplecouldn’t believe that someone likeme could change.”
Today the notorious house on thecorner is used as a creche duringthe week and on Friday nightsyouth church services are heldthere.
“I would like to give back to thecommunity that I robbed. Alcoholdestroys lives and tears familiesapart. Children are separated fromtheir parents and parents fromtheir families. I have destroyed thelives of families in the area and thisis my way of giving back to them,”he said.
He also plans to start a soup kitch-en and offer counselling as well aslife skills training.

Burglaries on the riseCHILTON MELLEM
Burglaries in Blue Downs have been onthe rise over the past week, according toKleinvlei police.
W/O Annacletta Mothoalo, spokespersonof Kleinvlei police said the concentration ofburglaries have been taking place in TuscanyGlen and Forest Heights. The station has re-ceived 10 reports of burglaries in Eerste Riv-er over the past week. Five of the reportedburglaries happened in Tuscany Glen.
Mothoalo urges neighbours to look out foreach other when they can.
“People should know their neighbours andask them to watch their houses when theycan. Neighbours should have a more neigh-
bourly interest in each other,” she said.Mothoalo also said people should look at
getting dogs to guard their property as an al-ternative solution for safety. People shouldalso take extra precautions, like locking theirdoors and installing burglar bars.
Burglaries have not been the only problemin the area, according to Mothoalo, as dust-bins are being stolen as well. She said va-grants walking past homes simply take resi-dents’ bins and walk away with them.
Mothoalo advises that dustbins should belocked up safely or put in residents’ backyards after they have been used.
. Shehaam Sims of the City of Cape Town’sUtility Services recently said the municipali-ty had to replace approximately 12 000 muni-cipal dustbins over a period of 18 months.
Woman’sbody found
CHILTON MELLEM
The body of a young woman was foundin Blue Downs during the early hoursof Monday morning.
According to W/O Annacletta Mot-hoalo, Kleinvlei police spokesperson,Janine Philander’s body was found byher friend. The body was discoveredin the back yard of a mosque in Hill-crest at 05:20.
Mothoalo said it was still unknownas to how the 22-year-old died, as therewere no marks discovered on thebody.
Mothoalo said the woman’s familyadmitted that she had been usingdrugs.
Police opened an inquest docket andwill investigate the case.
Renew yourgun licenceThe Western Cape Police Services has issu-ed a reminder to firearm owners that manyfirearm licences will expire this year andneed to be renewed.
This process is not automatic. In terms ofthe Firearm Controls Act, licensees will ha-ve to submit applications 90 days prior to theexpiry date, at their local police station.
Firearm owners are also encouraged tomake an enquiry at their police station whe-re an application was submitted, for issuedlicences, as these are often left uncollectedfor many months.

Women of action offer skillsCHILTON MELLEM
Not many places offer skills developmentas extensively as the Community WomenAction in Eerste River.
This non-profit organisation (NPO) hasbeen in existence for 12 years, with the aimof helping people in the Eerste River commu-nity.
Community Women Action is run byfounding member, Joan Mouton, her son,AshleyMouton,VioletMnyimba (vice-chair-person) and Elzanne February.
“Our focus point is the people who live inpoverty,” said Violet.
Programmes and courses that are runfrom the organisation are not just for thecommunity of Eerste River but they help en-rich the lives of people as far as Strand andKraaifontein. Even though they help peopleof all ages, Ashley said their main focus isskills development for theyouth, specificallybetween the ages of 18 and 25. The Communi-ty Women Action was initiated after a 14-year-old girl was gang raped and mur-dered by gangsters.
It was then that Joan Mouton started the
organisation as she believed that womenneeded to be empowered. Currently the or-ganisation has 50 people in their programmeand has helped so many other people whohave passed through their doors.
Some of the courses that are offered freeof charge are weld-ing, chef’s training,assistant chef,room attendant aswell as arts andcrafts.
Provision is alsomade to assist can-didates with get-ting their learner’sand driver’s licenc-es.
Some of theirnew classes includemusic, which istaught by Stellen-bosch Universitymusic students. Atthe moment onlybrass and marimbaclasses are taughton Friday after-
noons. Belly dancing is one of the new class-es that will be starting on 27 February.

Taking the shortcut more dangerous routeCHILTON MELLEM
A short-cut, close to the Eerste River Sho-prite, has caused great concern among resi-dents, as it has proved to be a hotspot forcriminal activity.
According to W/O Annacletta Mothoalo,Kleinvlei police spokesperson, the short-cutis surrounded by bushes. This makes it easyfor criminals to be concealed when attackingtheir victims.
“This area has been used as a short-cut,but it’s not safe because people have beenrobbed here. Especially women must takecare in this area,” Mothoalo said.
She advises that women should walk ingroups, instead of walking alone.
“Thieves know women cannot run afterthem after their bags have been snatched, be-cause women usually wear heels or other un-comfortable shoes which slow them down inthe sand, Mothoalo added.
So far, four cases of robbery have been re-ported by people using the short-cut over thepast week.
Possessions such as cellphones, moneyand bags have been stolen from victims us-ing the dangerous short-cut.
Mothoalo said criminal activities mightnot rest at theft, but could possibly progressto rape in future.
She advises people to avoid using this pathwhere possible.

Chico weerveilig tuisDit is vandag vir my ’n wonderlike dag. Chi-co was Woensdag in die koerant, en ’n uuren ’n half later, bel ’n man met die nuus dathy my hond het.
Met die klappers op 2 Januarie was hy soverwilder en het hy by hulle hek ingehard-loop, nie eens ver van my huis af nie. Sy vrouwas so bekommerd dat hy ’n hartaanval soukry, en het hom net daar en dan gedokter.Hy het vir ’n paar dae nie kom eet of drinknie, maar hy is nou veilig by die huis. Ekgaan oor die naweek terug na die mense, om’n beloning te gee (net om dankie te sê).

Valhalla Utd make it to final 32THOMAS CAROLUS
Valhalla United have qualifiedfor the final 32 of the Metropoli-tan Premier Cup.
They played to a 1-all drawagainst Vasco da Gama in Manen-berg on Sunday. The tournamenttakes place over the Easter week atErica Park in Belhar.
This is also the stage at which allthe professional and foreign clubsenter the tournament running. Theproceedings commence on the Wed-nesday before Easter Sunday, withthe group stage of the competition.
There are a total of eight groupseach containing four teams. Thedraw for the group stage is held ap-proximately three weeks before thetournament begins. Teams are see-ded according to previous perfor-mance and whether they are esta-blished PSL or top level foreignclubs.
At the end of the group stage theeight group standings are calcula-ted and the top two placed teams ofeach group qualify for the winners’section of the knock-out round. Thethird placed teams are placed wit-
hin the Plate Section Knock-outround. The fourth place finishers ineach group are eliminated from thetournament.
The Winners’ Section Last 16 lo-sers are then sent in to the quarter-finals for the Dullah Omar Mid-Sec-tion Semi-finals.
The three tiers of the competitionthen continue through the quarter,and semi-final stages. Easter Mon-day is the last day of the tourna-ment and serves as the day for allof the finals to be staged as well asthe winners’ section semi-finals.
The proceedings for the tourna-ment are concluded with the awar-ding of the player, team, and coachof the tournament awards as well asthe crowning of the event champi-ons for the season.
Other activities include the ope-ning and closing ceremonies as wellas the championship final curtainraiser.
Much fanfare surrounds these ce-remonies as many local artists andorganisations outside of football al-so get a chance to showcase their ta-lents for the spectators.
