het vir haar gesê daar is mense by die deur.Sy het by die skuifdeur uitgegaan en die per-soon gegroet. Dis toe dat ons die skote hoorafgaan,” vertel haar dogter, Kaylinn.

Blueberry Hill bush a concern
The Blueberry Hill bushes have become known as the bush of evilwhere murders are often committed, rapes sometimes take place andstolen property sometimes recovered. PHOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS
RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj
The Blueberry Hill bush in Eer-ste River is “the bush of evil”.This is a comment made by
ward councillorWilmaBrady ata subcouncil meeting a weekago where the unsafe bush wasdiscussed extensively.During the meeting Brady ex-
plained that it is no longer justadults who are attacked andmurdered in the bush locatednear Tuscany Glen and Hill-crest, but young children aswell. The clearing of the bush had
been discussed at previous sub-council meetings where it wasrequested that the departmentof housing clear the area as soonas possible due to the height ofthe bush and it becoming un-safe. To date nothing has beendone.Brady, who requested that the
clearing of the bush be treatedas a matter of urgency, ex-pressed her dismay.“It is unacceptable that the
bush is not cleared.“That bushhas becomeabush
of evil,” she told fellow council-lors.Brady said planned develop-
ment has been in the pipelinefor the area for several yearsnow.“But since 1999 when I came
to council we have been waitingfor the projects.“We know that the develop-
ment is in the process but thebush need to be cleared,” she
added.A community meeting was
held recently where residents ofTuscanyGlen complained aboutthe bush.“They too want to knowwhen
the bush will be cut down,”Brady said.Pieter Grobler, manager of
subcouncil 21, said in responsethat hewill request that themat-ter form part of the agenda atmeeting soon to be held betweenrole-players and department of-ficials.Brady replied: “Departmental
officials have been present atprevious meetings. You cannotkeep coming back saying I donot know, I have to go back tothe department.”This, she says, is not what the
community wants to hear.“As a councillor I too cannot
go back to the community with-out answers,” Brady said,Julian Unthank, chairman of
the community police forum, agrees.“That piece of land have been
like that for many years now.Promises have been made of de-velopments that will take place, but this does not seem to hap-pen.“Sometimes the bushes gets
chopped down, but it just growsback again,” he said.Unthank said the provincial
government and the housing de-partment need to step in beforematters get worse.“The bush is a danger to ev-
eryone. People are often mur-dered there,” he added.
He said school children are al-so sometimes robbed of theirpersonal belongings when theypass the bush either on theirway to school or home.“The criminals sometimes
wait in the bush.“Houses are also often broken
into and the thieves run andhide in the bush when they aredone,” Unthank said.Healso said that cars are often
stolen and then hid inside thethick bush where it is thenstripped for parts.Warrant Officer Annacletta
Mothoalo, Kleinvlei policespokesperson, said the police al-so sometimes struggle to locatecriminals who use the bush asa refuge.
“Blueberry Hill bush is a seri-ous hot spot for crime.“Murders, robberies, cases of
rape and the stash of stolenproperty are common occurren-ces,” she said.Mothoalo added that wanted
suspects often run to the bushwhere they hide from the police.A number of shacks have also
been erected inside the densebush.“We have visited all of these
shacks and found that some ofthemare used for Sotho culturalactivities and others by prosti-tutes to do their business.”Mothoalo said often people
making use of the prostitute’sservices also end-up gettingrobbed.

Clifton Swartz is on a mission to serve anace against negative influences for youth inthe Western Cape - and maybe produce a fu-ture Wimbledon winner.
As head of Catiza Training and Skills De-velopment he has the ambitious vision tointroduce tennis into underprivilegedschools and communities and has put toge-ther a project plan that will guide the pro-cess.
Rural and farm schools and communitieswill form an integralpart of this plan.
“The culture of sportand recreation of the’60s, ’70s and ’80s in dis-advantaged schoolsand communities havegradually been repla-ced by the current spa-te of crime-related andunsocial behaviouramong our young peo-ple,” he says.
“The lack of visionand dreams, the heavypressure on youth byfamily, peers and un-desirable elements inour communities putspressure on young peo-ple, boys and girls, togive up on their dre-ams and become partof a statistic of the elements of social ills.“Various factors have over the years contri-buted to convincing our youth that it is‘cool’ to behave unsociably. Communitieshave to deal with the challenges of moraldecay and a range of socio-economic issuessuch as joblessness, poverty, slow econo-mic development and crime.
“Our youth are lured by gangs with artifi-cial, material bait to become active in crimeand drugs because ‘it pays’. Cellphones, branded clothing, money, and drugs areused to motivate young boys to get involvedin gangsterism, and it is flourishing.
“The monster drug tik is destroying ouryoungsters and the impact on family and
community life is devastating. The ages ofdrug users and youngsters joining gangs isgetting younger resulting in learners drop-ping out of school.
“Schools have become unsafe and areslowly developing into gangster territo-ries.”
Clifton, who has vast experience in sportsmanagement and community developmentwants to use tennis to tackle these pro-blems.
He is a professional tennis coach and ITFLevel 2 coach and has obtained the SwedishTrain-the-Trainer qualification; he played,
coached and administe-red the game at various le-vels.
Clifton also managedprovincial and nationalteams to national, conti-nental and internationaltournaments and eventsand has attended nume-rous world coaching anddevelopment conferences.
“Our aims are to trainand equip youth and adulttennis enthusiasts withtennis playing, basic coa-ching and administrativeskills that will assist andenable them to play, im-plement and manage ten-nis programmes thatkindle ‘appetite’ and roll-out of the sport to the com-munities in a fun, recrea-
tional, enjoyable, professional and sustai-nable manner,” he says.
“The programme will consist of mini-ten-nis in primary schools, a high school tennisleague and free adult team tennis training.”
The programme already started in thefirst week of February with clinics and coa-ching sessions at the Athlone Tennis Courtsand at schools in Athlone, and they are alre-ady identifying other areas like Bonteheu-wel, Kraaifontein and Crossroads.V If you are interested in becoming part of this project in your neighbourhood contact Clifton on 083269 6794 or 021 697 0779 or 021 696 7935, email:[email protected], facebook: www.facebook.com/catizaskills.

Learners from the Highbury PrimarySchool in Kuils River held a cupcake day inaid of creating awareness of childhood can-cer.
Sunday 15 February was InternationalChildhood Cancer Day.
“This is what urged our school to havethis awareness day. Instead of the usual Va-lentine’s Day, this year we decided tospread some love to cancer patients and sur-vivors,” said school governing body secre-tary Illze Smith.
The cupcake day was held Thursday, 12February at 10:30.
“Our school raised R1 070 which will bedonated to Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer,a non-profit organisation aimed at educa-
ting and creating awareness about child-hood cancer,” Smith explained.
Thanks to the generosity of the personnelat local cake store Limnos Bakers, theschool could also manage to run a rafflewith a tasty chocolate mousse cake up forgrabs.
The raffle was won by Kuils River resi-dent Jeremiah Johnson, a parent of one ofthe learners at the school.
“Our learners came in from first break tothe hall with purple and pink balloons floa-ting from the upstairs railings.
“The excitementwas tangible as they sawthe tables set up with cupcakes, butter-cream and sprinkles waiting for them to de-corate.
“We had a discussion about why we wereraising the money and thanked all our lear-ners for their effort,” Smith said.

Fury over steel plant optionRICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
Noise pollution, air pollution andhealth impacts are just few of the con-cerns someKuils River residents have
regarding the possibility of a steel plant re-opening in their area.
Residents in Vredelust, Kuils River andsurrounding areas are currently up in armsfollowing news of the possible re-opening ofthe Cape Town Iron and Steel Works compa-ny, operating as Cisco, in the area.
The plant is located next to Van RiebeeckRoad and is a stone’s throw away from thequiet residential area.
Cisco, now under new ownership, closedits doors in 2010 but was recently granted aprovisional atmospheric emission licenseby the City of Cape Town. A decision whichhas left many residents disgruntled.
A petition was by the Vredelust Ratepay-ers Association opposing the re-opening.Residents fear for their health, are con-cerned about noise and air pollution as wellas a drop in their property value.
Danelle Steyn, secretary of the associa-tion, said: “A dark cloud has appeared overour community and seems it will be turningquite literal soon.”
AppealsAn advertisement informing residents of
the provisional license was published in lo-cal newspapers whereby residents were alsoinvited to submit notices of appeal to theCity of Cape Town Manager and Withers En-vironmental Consultants. The deadline forthe submission is Friday, 6 March.
The association has done just that. Steynsaid the association also took the liberty ofsending its petition along with its letter ofappeal to both the City and Withers.
“We have received 48 signatures on the
16th of February,” Steyn said. The petition, according to Steyn, was for-
warded to Withers in March 2014 – nearlya year ago – already. “Back then we re-ceived notice via e-mail that they have re-ceived our petition to op-pose the license requestCisco applied for. Aftermany follow ups withWithers about the status, they replied with nonews; they would let allinterested parties knowas soon as their assess-ment was complete. Lastweek I received an e-mailinforming us that the Cityof Cape Town had grantedCisco’s request,” Steynexplained.
GrievancesShe added: “We are currently trying to
contact and inform as many nearby inter-ested and affected parties as possible viaFacebook and radio and trying to get con-tacts in the media to get as many appealsthrough before the 6th of March.”
Ward councillor Bert van Dalen said hefully supports the protest against the re-opening of the plant.
“I say this as I have sat in on the commit-teewith Cisco and the residents staying op-posite and very near to the plant. All thereasons stated by the objectors are true andfair,” he said.
Withers Environmental Consultantswas approached for comment but referredall questions to the City.
Speaking on behalf of the City, Siyabu-lela Mamkeli, mayoral committee memberfor health, said the City is aware of theproximity of the residential area to the Cis-co steel plant and the resident’s grievances.
He explained that the provisional licensewhich was granted on 2 February is valid fora period of one year from the date of issue.
“It grants the applicant authority to com-mence operating a listed activity. Within the
year that the license isvalid for, the operatormust then show compli-ancewith the conditionsof the licence and dem-onstrate that they canmeet the minimumemission standardsspecified for the listedactivities they are en-gaging in,” Mamkelisaid.
RezoningAsked about the ac-
tions that will be taken following the outcomeof the appeal process, Mamkeli replied: “TheCity’s Appeal Authority will consider thematter and make a decision on whether to up-hold the decision of the licensing authority, amend it, or dismiss the appeal.”
Steyn, a mother of two, said when she and
her family moved into the area, propertyagents informed them that the steel plantwould remain permanently closed. She saidthe area was rezoned residential.
JohanvanderMerwe, mayoral committeemember for energy, environmental and spa-tial planning, however said this is not thecase.
Van der Merwe said when Cisco ceasedtheir operations a few years ago, various po-tential buyers of the property enquiredabout alternative use rights, including thepossibility of redevelopment for high-densi-ty residential purposes.
“Potential buyers were informed that, generally, the rezoning of any property cantake place through the relevant land-useprocesses.
“In this case, a rezoning application wasnever submitted by the current or past own-ers and, as a result, the property retained itsoriginal industrial zoning; therefore, theuseis in line with the existing zoning and is per-mitted,” Van der Merwe said.
He said the City cannot comment on whatmay have been presumed by individualmembers of the public.
“We are currently tryingto contact and inform
as many nearby interested and affected par
ties as possible ...” Danelle Steyn

KuilsRiver residentswhoare sickand tiredof early morning traffic congestion duringpeak hour are now taking a stand andmak-ing their voices heard.
The traffic situation in the area has beenat the top of the agenda at communitymeet-ings but to date no plausible solution hasbeen offered. This has urged some residentsto take action.
Since the start of February an online peti-tion has circulated, shared and signed byover two thousand angry and frustratedresidents.
The petition – Stop the Kuils River Grid-lock – is the brainchild of Amandelrug-resi-dent Kobus Vivier. To date 2 030 residentshave signed.
“We, the undersigned, call on the City ofCape Town andOostenbergMunicipality toeliminate the daily traffic congestion with-in theKuils River community,” the petitionreads.
Vivier said the petition was a platformwhere people make their voices heard.
“I often read the people complain aboutthe traffic, but nothing gets done about it.I wanted to create a central point that canhelp express how people feel,” he said.
Vivier said within 24 hours he managedto obtain 400 signatures.
Within 48 hours this number had in-creased to 1 766.
Vivier plans to submit the petition to theCity of Cape Town and traffic departmentonce he has obtained enough signatures.
“Everybody talks about it on the socialpages of the neighbourhood watch struc-tures, but no one does anything about it.”
He said the problem the area sits with is
that toomany developments take place, butthe infrastructure remain the same.
“More roads need to be built,” he said.FellowKuils River resident Arrie Serfon-
tein agrees.“A lot of traffic moves through Kuils Riv-
er via Amandel and Langverwacht Roadfrom Brackenfell en route to Stellenboschand the industrial area. This causes a prob-lem in the morning and evenings,” he said.
Van Riebeeck Road is equally problemat-ic especially the part from where Nooiens-fontein Road connects to Van RiebeeckRoad all the way to Old Oak Road.
Despite the anger and frustration resi-dents might soon find some light at the endof this dark traffic tunnel.
Brett Herron, mayco member for trans-port, said upgrades to parts of Kuils River’sroads are in the pipeline.
A studywas conducted recentlywhich in-dicated the necessary infrastructure re-quired to accommodate the proposed devel-opments in the area.
Key transport elements, Herron said, in-cluded the need for an interchange betweenBottelary Road and the R300; the upgradingof Amandel Road from the Bottelary River(shortly after Sandalwood Road) towardsBottelary Road and the construction of Sax-downRoad fromBottelaryRoad toLangver-wacht Road and to Van Riebeeck Road.
“The three projects are at different pha-ses, ranging from the detailed design phaseto the construction phase,” Herron said.
He said the Amandel Road contract hasnot been awarded yet, but is imminent.
“The section of SaxdownRoad that is cur-rently being constructed is to give access toa development.V To view the petition visit www.gopetition.com/petitions/kuilsrivergridlocked.html

Most vegetation fires are man madeand intentional.
This information was shared by afire and rescue official at a subcouncil meet-ing last week.
Thediscussion cameaboutwhile thequar-terly reports of the public emergency com-munication centre were discussed, and thatof the fire and rescue service were noted.
According to the reports, 419 fire callswere logged between October and Decemberlast year across subcouncil 21.
Of the total, 21 fires were at formal resi-dential houses and 23 at informal structures.
The remainder of the recorded calls in-clude burning cars, motorcycles, offices, fur-niture, shops and a department store.
False alarms, of which 11 were out of goodintent and five weremalicious, were also re-corded.
The majority of the calls however – 339 –were rubbish, grass and bush fires.
Frank Forbay, divisional commander ofthe Kuils River, Belhar andMfuleni fire sta-tions, told councillors the biggest problemthe fire department experiences is people in-tentionally starting bush fires.
“People sit and burn copper in the bush. They leave the fires burning after they aredone,” he said.
Forbay said most fires are started inten-
tionally.“We therefore have programmes whereby
we visit schools and inform themof the costsincurred by the City of Cape Town when at-tending these fires,” Forbay added.
He said people also started fires to get ridof pests such as rats and snakes.
Majidie Abrahams, PR councillor, wantedto knowwhether the fire stations in the sub-council can cope with the amount of workthey are expected to do.
Forbay explained that in most cases firestationswhoareunderstaffed get assistedbyneighbouring fire stations during big anddangerous fires.
There are currently 35 fire stations acrossthe city.

Dié kantoor se bemarkingsgebied sluit inKuilsrivier, Eersterivier, Blue Downs enKraaifontein – ’n florerendemarkgebiedmetgroot potensiaal, vertelHorst Psotta, eienaarvan dié Pam Golding-franchise.
“Die huuropbrengs in die gebied is baie be-ter as in duurder areas. So as jy wil koop vir’n belegging, is hierdie die beste plek,” sê
Horst vol vertroue.
Ons is nog nie daarnie, but we will get there.”V Diegene wat belangstel, kan die Pam Goldingkantore direk kontak by 021 906 2820.

Two defeats in two weeks is about asmuch as Riverside Rangers players be-lieve they can take.
And when they take on FC Hout Bay Unit-ed in a SAB League match on Sunday at Av-onwood Park, it will be with the intentionof turning things around. The side started the new season brightly,
ensuring they got out of the relegation zone.Their unbeaten run was brought to an ab-
rupt end by Santos FC, agame they should have wonconsidering their domina-tion. Then the same ill luckfollowed them to Bridge-townSport Fields inAthlonewhere the beneficiarieswere Silver Spurs. But now the boys in red
want to make up for this. They believe they owe it tothe supporters who havestood by them through diffi-cult times through the firsthalf of the season.
Different combinationsCoach Leslie Mondo has been trying out
different combinations, some of which wereforced through injuries or suspensions. Hebelieves the team is not quite where hewants it to be, but is positive. He has givenmost of the players a run, and now the taskis to find that winning streak - the click thatwill unite them and turn them into a hard-playing unit.Fans have been urging the team to go out
and fight, and are still confident that thecoach is on the right track to getting River-side Rangers back to where it belongs at thetop. While many were disappointed by the
loss to Silver Spurs in particular, they werehappy with the way the team played.
Total focus“Weneed tomaintain total focus.Weknow
that we are not on a winning path but can’tafford to dwell on the past and still be lickingour wounds from the past two losses in theleague. We understand that this is footballand these things happen.’’The teamhave learnt from the past bad re-
sults andMondo says he knows exactly whyRiversideRangershavebeenfailing to win, adding thatthey have worked on theweaknesses.“We know why we didn’t
win our last two matches.Themanof thematch in bothgameswere goalkeepers, andif the opposition goalkeeperis voted man of the match, itmeans we were attackingand creating goal scoring op-portunities. We were deniedby some good goalkeeping.“We also have been very
unlucky in front of goals. There were situations, where we controlledplayandcouldhavewrappedupamatch ear-ly but could not finish.’’Mondo also pointed out that after every
match, they always make it a point of work-ing harder on the lacking areas from previ-ous matches.“At out training sessions, following a bad
result, wealwaysmake it apoint thatwe findways to rectify whatever might have gonewrong and continue working harder.’’Not underestimating the opponentMondo
was quick to point out that FC Hout BayUnited were a dangerous side that shouldnot be taken lightly.
