Ons het baie vrien-de gemaak, vriende for life.

marathon later in April.

Jephta said: “We have to march on to-wards the goal if we want to live up to theexpectations of the community out there.”

Jephta was recently appointed provincialdeputy and said there are a number of chal-lenges she wishes to address.

“First of all I want us to build a betterpartnership, there is no way that we can

prevent the scourge of violence, domesticviolence and rape without partnerships. We need to take hands.”

She told police officers to work togetherwith their communities.

She said the police will start reaching outto their communities and to the vulnerable.

“I have been in the police service for 32years and still have a lot of energy,” shesaid. She encouraged members to becomeequally excited about taking on the challen-ges ahead.

“We need to make this partnershipwork,” she said.

‘Protect elderly, children’Leslie Adriaanse from the Church of Na-

tivity in Blackheath, said during his ser-mon that the police and the communityshould all start protecting the elderly andchildren.

“We can eradicate the scourge of rape andmurder. Our purpose as a community is towork hand and hand with the police, theytoo are people, with a family, children andspouses.”He also encouraged the police totreat community members with dignityand respect.

Police pray for unity

gebied onveilig raak vir kinders wanneerhulle ná skool huis toe loop.Van die skool se leerders is by bendes be-

Community members in Vredelust, KuilsRiver said this week they are concernedover the lack of safety in the area. This comes after a 23-year-old woman was

robbed and nearly raped by her attackersearlier this week.TygerBurgerwas told this week that peo-

ple often get robbed and that there are sever-al break-ins in the area.In the most recent attack a teacher on her

way to the local creche was robbed at knife-point onMondaymorning around 06:00 nearSkilpaddam Road, Vredelust.Claudette Stewart, owner of the creche,

said on behalf of her traumatised employeethat the victim was attacked on an open pie-ce of land situated close to the ZevenwachtMall.“We have asked the council to cut down

the trees and clear the field out of fear thatsomething like thismight happen,” Claudet-te said. She said her employee seemed frantic and

was tearful when she arrived at work.“I asked her what had happened and she

toldme that some guys had tried to rape her.

“I had to sit her down for a few minutesto calm her down and then called the chair-person of the ratepayers’ association to askif they are still on patrol because somethinghad just happened to one of my teachers.“I also contacted my husband who works

for the Metro Police.”However, the two unknown attackers

could not be found.“As shewas coming towork the guys came

from behind the dunes. One of them grabbedher bag, the other grabbed her by her hoodand jumped on top of her.“He then told her to hand over her ear-

rings and necklace. While he was on top ofher he held a knife to her throat and told her

he was going to rape her,” Claudette explai-ned further. She said the men were interrupted by a

passing vehicle.“They left her and ran away,” Claudette

said. She said the attack left the victim very up-

set.“This is not the first time that I have heard

about people being robbed coming into thearea,” Claudette said. The community has for this reason, and

due to the amount of break-ins in the area, recently established their own ratepayers’association and are currently in the processof forming a community neighbourhoodwatch.Captain Isaac van Niekerk, spokesperson

for the Kuils River police, confirmed the po-lice attended the complaint in Vredelust. He said Constable Aubrey Bouer from the

police station attended the scene and trans-ported the victim home to Tuscany Glen af-ter she had received attention.“The victim was offered trauma counsel-

ling but indicated that she is okay.“She decided not to lay a charge, but she

can feel free do to so at anytime,” Van Nie-kerk said.

Conditions at schools must be impro-ved and efforts intensified to providefor secure learning environments. This request was contained in a let-

ter from James Vos, chairman of sub-council 3, to the departement of educa-tion.“Safety in our schools has changed

dramatically from the time I was achild,” says Vos.He said that it is deplorable that cri-

minals are targeting school childrenwalking to schools and educational in-stitutions, and by doing so strippingthe community and the learners of sa-fe places to learn. In an attempt to prevent criminal

incidents at schools and in the streetssurrounding schools, Vos has reque-sted that the police increase their pa-trols during peak periods. He has also written to the education

department to consider additional sa-fety measures at schools.Vos emphasised that success requi-

res more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic. “It requires the helpof all students, parents, schools, andlaw enforcement.” He has written tothe authorities, calling for visible andfrequent police patrols.

City potential for small businesses

Existing and aspirant small business owners in Wesbank attended a Business Information Sessionhosted by the city at the Multi Purpose Centre. PHOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

Small business owners and aspiring entre-preneurs were recently informed of busi-ness potential within the City of Cape Town. The event was held last Tuesday at the

Wesbank Multi Purpose Centre.Raelene Arendse, PR-councillor and con-

vener of the meeting, said existing and po-tential small business owners were infor-med of the city’s economic development de-partment’s business support programmewith partners such as Cape Town Activa.Cape Town Activa is a City Council initia-

tive providing a web portal connecting peo-ple to vital resources. “It’s a placewhere peo-ple can access information regarding DTI(Department of Trade and Industry), tou-rism and all the other sectors,” Arendsesaid.“The partners like Activa and Seda assist

businesses and provide the necessary re-sources in terms of the development of a bu-siness.”The information sessionwas presented by

manager at the city’s department of econo-

mic development, Carlo Vizzi.Arendse, social development and early

childhood development portfolio committeechairperson, said another objective regar-ding the session is to encourage Early Child-hood Development (ECD) practioners to be-come more professional.“The ECD’s are also small businesses,”

Arendse said. She said these businesses could expand

with local government’s help.“This is my second workshop in the area.

We had a similar one here last year Novem-ber.“There is an interest and there are people

that have got some ideas, there is indeed aneed for these sessions,” Arendse explained. She said the sessions are important to

communitymembers because they providedinformation on how to utilise the city’s web-site and its supply chain management.Attendees learn how the supply chainma-

nagement processworks andhow to registeras a vendor on the city’ database, she said. The evening was also used to show people

what types of services the city requires.“There are two NGO’s I have invited be-

cause there is a need for professional servi-ces like skills training, first aid level trai-ning. . . all services that we outsource,” shesaid.

The sessions are held every three months,“I think it is important for people to knowwhere to go for help, they often get despon-dent,” Arendse concluded.
