“This is really disheartening to see as we tryour utmost best to carry out our duties as offi-cers. When we are blocked by certain people, these criminals get away and continue withtheir crime,” he says.According to Jones, anyone who partici-

pates in gang activities they are consideredcriminals. “If they acceptmoney, food or any-thing from a gang or gang member, they arecriminals. If they hide a gang member or fire-arm, they are criminals. If a gang supportsthem in anyway they too are considered crim-inals.”Meanwhile the principal of Disa Primary

School, Andrew James, says about 50 parentscame to fetch their children from school, buttheyhad towaituntil about 13:15 asheallowedthe learners to leave in small groups only.“We sent the learners out in small groups

while the police monitored the area, whichwas a huge relieve to me. And by 14:15 theyhad all gone home with their parents.”

CCTV to deter crimeASTRID FEBRUARIE

@febastrid

To address the challenges associatedwith crime upfront, an amount ofR200 000 has been set aside by local

ward councillor ofWard 25 for the installa-tion of CCTV cameras.Ward councillor Beverley van Reenen

says crime and gangsterism are serious is-sueswhich affect everyone – not only thoseliving in Ward 25, but also those peopletravelling through the areawhich includesthe Cape Town International airport.“These CCTV cameras would then be

linked up with the City of Cape Town’sTransport for Cape Town operation centreinGoodwood fromwhere everything couldbe monitored and from where armed re-sponse could be dispatched quicker andfaster,” she says.A very important feature that comes

with the CCTV cameras is the numberplate recognition feature which will easethe task of the police and law enforcers.“In order to fast-track these processes, I

had several meetings with the City MetroPolice and the safety and security depart-ments in order to agree to the location ofthese CCTV cameras,” she says.Van Reenen says the locations of the

cameras has been moved along FrancieVan Zijl Drive from the original location“The reason for the installation at these

locations is because there is an under-ground infrastructure,” she says.At one point they experienced some hic-

cups and delays with regards to the way-leaves application, but Van Reenen is gladto report that the wayleaves have sincebeen obtained and all outstanding mattershave been resolved.“I have since received promising news

from the contractors who indicated thatthey will, within the next two weeks, be onsite and theworkwill therefore begin in ear-nest,” she says. She ishowevermindful that crimewill not

disappear immediately, but hopes that withthe little money at their disposal, the instal-lation of the CCTV cameras will become areality and their response timewill improve

so that criminals can be identified, appre-hended and the area made a little safer forall residents.“However with the assistance of all role

players in the area and the commitment ofthe City of Cape Town as a safe and caringCity, I am very optimistic that together wecould make a difference to combat crimewithin the area,” Van Reenen further says.

The CCTV cameras will be erected along Francie Van Zijl Drive in Cravenby Estate.

Bêre water in skoon, verseëlde houers vir huishoudelike gebruik gedurende hierdie tyd.

2015-ALGEMENEWAARDASIELYS VIR DIE STAD KAAPSTAD

Learners at Athlone School for the Blindcan now engage with nature throughtouch and smell instead of sight after theBotanical Society of South Africa officiallylaunched the sensory garden they createdat the school for learners from the Zisu-kanya Early Childhood Development Cen-tre.

This was made possible by contribu-tions from MySchool, Rotary Club of Kir-stenbosch and the Redhatters Bridge Club.

The executive director from the Botani-cal Society, Zaitoon Rabaney, says this ini-tiative is one which has an ongoing effect.

As the garden grows and develops theschool aims to involve the learners inmaintaining the garden at each stage, suchas supplying the kids with watering cans

and spades to maintain it, creating a senseof awareness and responsibility, so it be-comes a space that they don’t just visit, butnurture and develop. “This project speaksto one of the 16 targets set out in South Af-rica’s Strategy for Plant Conservation, which emphasises the importance of plantdiversity, and the need for its conserva-tion incorporated into communication, ed-ucation and public awareness pro-grammes,” Rabaney says.

The sensory garden will promote educa-tional opportunities and exposure to biodi-versity – not only for the ECD learners, butall learners at Athlone School for the Blindand their staff and families.

Pieter Twine, MySchool’s general man-ager, says it has been great to support this

project and playing a part in creating aspace for special needs learners.

“The garden allows for students to ex-press their sensory and learning capabili-ties with a hands-on approach, while pro-moting the education of healthy eating andan environmental awareness in additionto donating funds towards the garden.”

MySchool also donated two benchesmade out of recycled material to be placedin the garden for teachers and learners toenjoy outdoor lessons and during break.

Elsies River Police have a new stationcommander who is determined to ad-dress and find solutions to the crime

and gang related issues in the community.Brigadier Zingisa Althea Manci was pro-

moted to station commander after being inan acting position for the last two years.

Manci believes building a trusting part-nership with the community will help tocombat crime in the region.

“We have a major problem with trust inthe community and through our aware-ness campaigns we hope to restore thistrust partnership to ensure we can worktogether to push crime out of the area.”

Through several marches organised bythe police, the Community Police Forum aswell as neighbourhood watches and othercommunity organisations, police have re-ceived valuable information from the com-munity which resulted in several success-ful arrests.

“We must include the community in ourawareness programmes to ensure they feelpart of us and that it is not us against themor them against us,” she says.

Manci says some of the crime issues inthe community include drugs and gang-sterism as well as domestic violence.

These are issues high on her priority listwhich she intends to tackle every day toensure the community is safe and peoplelive in an environment where they feel freeto walk the streets without fear of becom-ing the next victim of a crime.

She believes that starting in schools willhelp build a better society as children oftenget lured into gangs in the community withpromises of earning money and receivingvaluable goods.

“These children do not realise the im-pact they have on their families, fellowclassmates and their own lives. Here wehave generations of families involved ingangsterism and it makes it difficult totackle the issue, but we will not back downuntil we have a breakthrough in stoppingthis surge of gangsterism and crime in thecommunity,” Manci says.

Robberies are also a major issue andmany of the cases reported occur in the ear-ly hours of the morning and late in theevening when people are commuting.

In this case police have increased theirpatrol hours and now monitor the hot-spotareas where these robberies occur.

“When we are visible we deter thesecriminal activities and reduce the crimerate in the area as we often see these pettythieves move on to get involved in moredangerous crimes,” she says.

Manci urged residents to take a stand, tospeak up and to come forward with infor-mation if they want to see change.

Youth unite through krumpYouth fromvarious communities on the

Cape Flats showed off their dancingskills at a krump tournament last

week. The tournament, known as the “Basement

7 toKill”,washeld at theRavensmeadRecre-ational Centre and presented by the North-ern Krump Kingdom in partnership withSkunk Bro Nation and Bix-C.Bix-C, also known as Cedrick Flandorp, a

rapper fromElsies River, says the event wasone of a kindwith themotive to bring young-sters from all over the Cape Flats who sharethe same passion for the art which theyknow as krump (“krumpin” is a street dancepopularised in the United States and is char-acterised by free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement involvingthe arms, head, legs, chest, and feet).“The youths who started krumping saw

the dance as a way for them to escape gang

life and to release anger, aggression andfrustration positively, in a non-violent waytogether under one roof,” he says.Flandorp says young krumpers had the

opportunity to battle it out at the tourna-ment until the very last in order towin a spe-cial designed trophy and bragging rights un-til they participate in the Basement session. The 7 to Kill tournament see krumpers

competing to win all seven rounds in orderto be crowned. “They require great staminaand powerful moves together with stylewhich determines who walks away with thetrophy,” Flandorp says.He says all krumpers were in tune, fo-

cused and in great shape as they entertainedthe crowd with their great ability and pas-sion for this art form.“The atmospherewasmind blowing as the

crowd was intensively watching the toughcompetition and was indeed totally in-

spired,” he says. The three finalists were Ludik Samu also

known as Gladiator, Dyllon van Niekerk(Boi Ghost) who is only 11 years old and Ber-nito Louw (Horror Lil Guardian).Flandorp says these krumpers gave it

their all by battling each other in the finalrounds, but unfortunately only one couldwalk awaywith the trophy. Lil GuardianBe-nito Louw took the trophy home at the endof the tournament.“Events like thiswill continue throughout

the year and years to come, andmuch biggerand better to build stronger communitiesand to build bridges,” he says. For more information on how you can get

involved, contact Bix-C on 084 323 6427 oremail: [email protected] or CorbonJohannes on 062 561 4425 or check out theFa-cebook pages of Northern Krump Kingdomand Skunk Bro Nation.

A local non-profit organisation is in need ofdonations and is turning to the public for as-sistance to help families inBishopLavis andsurrounds. The Jubilee Women’s Development run a

soup kitchen to ensure those in the commu-nity who struggle to make ends meet havesomething to eat.Pastor Ronald Jacobs, fundraiser for the

NGO, says the objective of the organisationis to provide families or individuals withfood and clothing.“Wehavemany peoplewho struggle to put

bread on the table, let alone clothing on theirbacks. We saw that there was a great needfor this type of organisation to bring somerelief to families and children in the commu-nity,” he says. There are currently four members on the

board of the organisation who dig into theirown pockets to run the soup kitchen. Theyalso regularly collect anddistribute clothingto those who go to their soup kitchen events.“We try our best to provide the residents

who come to us with a good meal and some-thing warm to drink, but due to shortage offunds we struggle a bit and urge the publicto support us if and when they are able todo so,” Jacobs says.He says they are always in need of dona-

tions such as clothing for adults and babiesand non-perishable food items.“We are not picky about what we ask for,

butwewould appreciate it if the public couldsupport us, and when they do, to give cloth-ing that is still in a good condition as it goesa long way when someone receives some-thing that they can be proud of wearing.”The next soup kitchen will be in March.

V Anyone interested in assisting or making a donation can call Pastor Jacobs on 021 811 6254.

Acombined effort by TableView, Goodwood and ElsiesRiver police stations led to the

arrest of two men following a stringof break-ins in Table View.Thieves went on a rampage in the

Table View precinct last week withseveral residents claiming crowbarswere used to gain entry to theirhomes.According to a trusted source

therewerenine front-door entries onWednesday 10 February. “Table View was hit hard yester-

day. It appeared to be well orches-trated.” Social media also buzzedwith residents’ reports of large appli-ances being stolen.Police spokesperson Warrant Offi-

cer Daphne O’Reilly says homes inParklands, Sunningdale and alongthe beachfront were mostly affected.

Crowbars used in many casesO’Reilly could not confirm the

amount of cases reported onWednes-day but says in all cases reported thefront doors or sliding doors of prem-ises were forced open and in somecases crowbars were used.Later that day at about 22:00 police

and a security company were in-volved in a high-speed car chasewhich resulted in a police vehiclerammed and officers injured.O’Reilly explains the drama un-

folded when an alarm of a home inFernwood Close, Parklands, wastriggered.“Complex Patrols and police re-

sponded and found four men in awhite Volkswagen Polo. The mensped away and a chase ensued.“On the corner of Plattekloof and

Koeberg roads, the police vehicletried to block the Polo but the menrammed the police vehicle pushing itinto the robot. The two officers hadminor injuries.”Complex Patrols continued to

chase the thieves and this resulted inanother crash on the corner of Din-gle and Alice roads.“Complex Patrols were out of ac-

tion, but during the chase officerswere communicating with Good-wood police and these officerschased the suspects further. The sus-pects skipped a red robot and collid-ed with another vehicle near Voor-trekker Road.”

Crash ends in arrestsThe men left the vehicle and start-

ed running in various directions.Goodwood officers managed to ar-rest one of the men in Ruyterwachtand during a search of the car founda crowbar and a “big hammer”. Offi-cers also recovered bank cardswhich belong to the owner of theParklands home.Later that evening during a vehi-

cle check point (VCP) held by ElsiesRiver police, officers found a man inpossession of household goods re-ported stolen from the Parklandshome.“He was arrested for being in pos-

session of suspected stolen goods. Both suspects arrested byGoodwoodand Elsies River police have beenlinked to the TableView case. At thisstage they are being processed bythose stations and Table View policewill continue to investigate to seewhether they can be linked to theother break-ins.’’

Meer inligting is by [email protected] beskikbaar.

Inwoners se geduld en ondersteuning word waardeer.

The Delft community can look forwardto the construction of a new EarlyChildhood Development (ECD) centre

which will provide a safe and caring educa-tional environment.

The facility will be constructed at 70 Cork-tree Street. The development will be in line with the

City of Cape Town’s strategic objective tobuild safe and caring communities.

The Mayco member for social develop-ment and early childhood development, councillor Suzette little, says the contractorhas been appointed and this was donethrough the City’s official Supply ChainManagement (SCM) processes.

“The City’s Bid Adjudication Committee(BAC) awarded the contract on Monday 8February and it is nowwithin the 21-day ap-peal period,” Little says.

Little says Delft was identified as one ofthe priority areas following a study done bythe Centre for Scientific and Industrial Re-search which highlighted the need for an

ECD facility to be built in the area. “The in-creasing influx of families from other areasdue to theN2Gateway housing developmentproject also sparked the need for such a facil-ity,” she says.

TheECDcentrewill consist of an adminis-tration block, kitchen facilities, ablution fa-cilities, classrooms and a play area as wellas a landscaped area which will have a sec-tion for a food garden to be developed. The Delft ECD centre will accommodate a

total of 150 children between one and fiveyears old and will provide a safe, secure, nurturing and caring environment for chil-dren to develop various skills which will laythe foundation for their future.“This facility will also include various

green building initiatives,” Little says. She further says once an operator is ap-

pointed there will be ongoing training tosupport the appointed service provider, fo-cusingmainly on compliance requirements.“Other ECD operators will be allowed to

use the facility as a training and meetingvenue. The over-arching policy of the Cityis to enable other ECD stakeholders to haveaccess to City-owned facilities,” Little adds.

It seemsGoldenArrowBus Services (GABS)was as disgusted by an accusation of one oftheir drivers allegedly jumping a red robotwhile texting, as the reader who alertedthem.

Thecomplainantwasdrivingbehindabusat the traffic intersection at Robert SobukweRoad near theMiddestadMall on Friday aft-ernoon when it happened.

She jotted down the registration number, and the media liaison for GABS, Bronwen

Dyke, responded immediately.“GABS was extremely concerned to learn

of allegations that one of our drivers wasmaking use of a cellular phone while behindthe wheel. This is completely unacceptablebehaviour and is a direct contravention notonly of our internal driver rules but of trafficlaws,” Dyke told TygerBurger.Dyke encouraged the public to follow the

complainant’s lead and report any concern-ing activity or behaviour.V All complaints can be directed by phone to0800 65 64 63 or you can send and email [email protected].

GGOOLLFF:: HATTRICK FOR WP IN DISABLED CHALLENGE

Western Province proved yet againthat golf is played on grass, not pa-per, as the four bankers and 17-

year-old rookie Ignation Douries sealed ahat-trick of victories in the South AfricanDisabled Golf Association’s Hollard Provin-cial Challenge, hosted by ReichmansCapi-tal, at Zwartkop Country Club on Sunday.

Over 36 holes of rousing shot-making andspirited competition, Western Province ral-lied to triumph on 11.5 points, defeating de-fending champions Rest of Country (ROC)by two points, while Gauteng finished aclose third on nine points.

There were lots of doubting Thomaseswho didn’t believe that Douries would keeppace with deaf player Ryan Lotz and the ex-perienced leg-amputees Morne Cronje, Ri-aan Spreeth and Trevor Reich.

Douries collected two points for WesternProvince in the first round and surprisedwith unexpected determination and grit atthe closing hole in the final round.

Standing on the 18th tee, Douries was onedown to Virgil Foster from Gauteng and allsquare with Nico Wentzel from ROC after

the former Nedbank SA Disabled Openchampion won the 17th hole.

“It was very, very tight at the end, butDouries handled the pressure like a realpro,” said proud Province skipper PieterVerwey. “We had 10 points in hand, but ROCwas on 9.5 points and Gauteng had 8.5points. Douries had to halve against Fosterand beat Wentzel to win the ProvincialChallenge for us. It was touch and go, butIgnation was like a little terrier that justwouldn’t let go. He lagged his first putt threefeet short of the hole and boxed the secondputt with total confidence to halve againstVirgil and beat Nico in the process.

Douries and Lotz both collected threepoints for Province, Spreeth amassed twopoints and Cronje won the Most ValuablePlayer honour for the champions with 3.5points.

“Reich didn’t contribute any points thisyear, but the team awarded him a gold starfor inspiring everyone else to greatness,”said Verwey. “Of course that means he paysfor all the celebratory drinks and all theFanta Douries wants.”
