SUBRAADVOORSITTER: KAN EERS AANGAAN MET PLIGTE

    Verlede spook by Sam

    MICHELLE LINNERT

    @linnertmb

    S

ubraad 6 se voorsitter kan vir eers aan-

gaan met sy pligte nadat sy verlede

    laasweek byhombegin spookhet en hy

    amper geskors is.

die eerste keer oor sy betrokkenheid by di

inval berig is, by navraag aan TygerBurger

ges dat hy weldra sou reageer.

Baie dankie vir jou vriendelike navraag.

Ek sal ter gelegener tyd daarop antwoord.

    Liza Albrecht, DA-woordvoerder, het

Maandag aan TygerBurger ges di party

wil nie kommentaar lewer oor die relevan-

    sie van die aantygings nie.

Die DA se provinsiale uitvoerende komi-

    tee (PUK)het n brief aanhom(Pienaar)Vry-

dag oorhandig waarin die voorneme om

hom te skors, uiteengesit word, het Al-

    brecht ges.

Die rede hiervoor is die volgende: Daar

word beweer dat jy inligting weerhou het

van die party ten opsigte van jou aktiwiteite

as bevelvoerder in die voormalige Suid-Afri-

kaanse Weermag, veral met betrekking tot

1985 se Trojaanse Perd-slagting. Dit is die

gronde waarop die Party hom voorneem om

Pienaar te skors, hangende n ondersoek.

    Street safety her priority

    GARY VAN DYK

    @gvdcapejazz

Safety on the streetsmust become a priority

    in Delft and surrounding areas.

That is the wish of Colonel Heidie de Ja-

ger, acting station commander for the Delft

    precinct.

I want the public in Delft to bemore safe-

ty conscious and to enhance their own safe-

ty, she said last week after reviewing inci-

    dents in the area.

She stated that her primary concern cur-

rently is to address rape, sexual assaults,

    house robberies and car hijackings.

Since the beginning of December to 18

January 31 cases of rape were reported,

three of sexual assault and two of attempted

    rape, she said.

Six cases of house robberywere reported

and seven incidents of car hijacking.

When it comes to the rape cases, most of

them involved the abuse of alcohol. Inmany

cases the victim knows the attacker or they

come from shebeens and wake up naked.

With regard to the cases of sexual as-

sault, parental supervision is of utmost im-

    portancewhereminors need protection and

    are most vulnerable.

She also pointed out that in respect of

house robberies toomany houses are inade-

    quately protected.

In too many cases the suspects are able

to kick open the doors easily, or the com-

plainants allege that when theywoke up the

suspects were already in their house.

People must start investing in safety

measures such as burglar bars and safety

    gates to enhance their safety.

Car hijackings have also become a major

    concern. Driversmust also bemore aware,

especially when they are alone, because

that is when these culprits strike.

People coming home late at night must

also be aware not to leave their cars idling

while opening gates or garages. Extra care

and caution should also be practised when

    operating in isolated areas.

De Jager requested that the public ensure

    they take precautionary measures, particu-

larly at night or when they are alone.

Victims must also do their utmost to

identify the perpetrators of crimes, by being

aware of their surroundings and/or to take

note of identifying features such as scars,

tattoos, and any outstanding features of sus-

    pects.

When accosted by armed suspects it is

important not to resist, that one stays calm,

stay focused andmake every attempt to take

note of outstanding bodily or identifying

marks that could assist in the investigation

    and identification of the perpetrators.

Left, right, forward, march! Bramble Way Primary in Bonteheuwel is proud of their drill squad that has been chosen to lead the

annual blessing of the schools service that will be held at the Church of the Resurrection on Sunday. Some of their members will also be

part of the drill squad of the Peace and Goodwill Christmas Band that will be taking part in competitions in Worcester later this month.

With drum major Zico George at attention they are seen here getting some training from band chairperson Gregory George (in white cap)

    Call for residents to

    take to the streets

    GARY VAN DYK

    @gvdcapejazz

    Concerned about crime? Take to

the streets in Bellville South on

    Saturday 6 February.

Heading this call is David Sias,

    chairperson of the Bellville

    South Community Policing Fo-

    rum (CPF).

    Enough is enough! Our com-

    munity in Bellville South will

not be held hostage by crimi-

    nals, he said.

    The motivation for this initia-

    tive follows several brutal mur-

    ders of opposing gang members

in Bellville South in the past few

months and reports that gang vi-

    olence erupted in turf wars

    where several drug houses and

    scores of illegal shebeens flour-

    ish.

Sias said that too many com-

    munity members said they live

    in fear.

Thisweek the CPF put out the

    call for mass community mobili-

    sation, calling for support from

    all community organisations, in-

    cluding churches,with strongac-

    tion against gangsterism and

    drugs in theBellville Southpolic-

    ing area.

    Gang violence erupted a few

months ago in the area, where

    several young men belonging to

    opposing gangs were brutally

shot and killed in what appears

    to be revenge attacks.

    The gangsters have guns and

at night we can hear the gunfire.

    Sometimes there are shootings

in the early mornings too. We

want this to stop. We want our

streets back and we will send a

    strong message to these thugs,

    said a mother of three.

    The CPF will work closely

with the police and other law en-

    forcement agencies to squeeze

    these criminal elements out of

    Bellville South, continued Sias.

We request and call upon all

    organisations, churches and

    community members to join us

in making Bellville South a safer

place for all to work and live.

We also call on all citizens to

come forward with and give the

    police information on any crimi-

nal activities. The people of Bell-

ville South must send a clear

    message to the criminals that

    their time is up.

The march on Saturday 6 Feb-

ruary will start in Iscor Street at

    noon, ending in Frank Louw

    Park after winding through the

    streets in the area.

V You can sms or whatsapp your sup

port for the march to 073 3152 128.

    Thieves were thwarted when they

could not get away with this stack

of decoders that was all ready for

    their getaway.

    Burglars empty handed

    after quick reaction

    Thieves were thwarted when Bish-

op Lavis police responded to a call

at a local mall on Friday.

    Officers were patrolling the

street at about 00:45 when they

were notified of an alarm going off

at Pep Stores in the mall in

    Charlesville.

    Captain Marie Louw, Communi-

    cations officer at Bishop Lavis,

said that when they arrived at the

    premises, everything looked in or-

der, but they were determined to

make sure everything was as it

    seemed.

    Theofficers then saw that anex-

it door of the centre was standing

    open. Further investigation re-

vealed that the padlock of the big

sliding gate at the back was

    snapped.

    Further investigation revealed

bags and boxes in a passage at the

back of the mall that the thieves

    were planning to steal.

    The officers called for backup

    with theDogUnit assisting the offi-

cers. A search revealed three secu-

rity guards handcuffed in the secu-

rity office and the door to Pep

    Stores wide open. Unfortunately

the suspects had already fled the

    scene. Police are investigating.

    GETS keeps on

    expanding

The GETS organisation in Bonteheuwel makes the community aware of their needs with

marches and various projects throughout the year.

    GARY VAN DYK

    @gvdcapejazz

Last year was a busy one for a Down Syn-

    drome awareness project in Bonteheuwel,

but beware theres more action in 2016.

Genes to Success (GETS) is calling on all

parents or caregivers in Bonteheuwel and

    surrounding areas with Down Syndrome

children to join them in their programmes

    and projects.

    Faseega Coetzee, founder member of

GETS, said that one of the highlights of last

year was the start of their physiotherapy

sessions at the Multi-purpose centre in

    Bonteheuwel.

This will be happening again this year

and after having a meeting with Letitia

Rustin of the UCT physiotherapy depart-

ment at Groote Schuur Hospital, it was

agreed that from February UCTs fourth

year students will start their sessions on

    Mondays and Thursdays, she said.

These sessions will be running from

13:00 to 15:00 and are very beneficial to the

    participants.

Coetzee also stated that they were very

busy throughout the festive season recap-

ping their successes and planning for the

    new year.

Flyers and information went out to par-

ents with special needs children. We hope

they will make use of this opportunity as it

will only benefit their children in future.

She further stated that they are working

on setting up ameetingwith the UCT speech

    therapy department.

    If thismeeting is successful,wewill hope-

fully have speech therapy sessions at the

    Vanguard Health Centre.

Our objective within GETS is to promote

awareness of people with Down Syndrome

    and other intellectual disabilities.

We also have interaction with other spe-

cial needs people and want to include them

    in our rehabilitation services.

The ultimate aim is show the world that

the disabled have their part to play in socie-

    ty.

    Wepray that yearwill bemore successful

and that our community will be more re-

sponsive to the needs of our special needs

    people and children.

    @gvdcapejazz

Restricted access to a popular park inBel-

har has become a problem for keep-fit en-

    thusiasts.

Anton Kallis, who lives near Aalwyn

Park, is one of the community members

who is complaining about the restriction

    to access.

He pointed out that for many years

    therewasunrestricted access for the resi-

dents to enjoy theparkas anexercise ven-

ue, or just as a place of relaxation.

This all changed about five years ago

when the council decided to erect a fence

around it but we were promised that

there would still be unrestricted access

    but with supervision.

We understood that this was done be-

cause of misuse of the field with regard

to crime and drug abuse, but these prom-

    ises have not been kept.

Kalliswent on to explain that somepeo-

ple in the area signed a petition to the

City, but their appeals have fallen on deaf

    ears.

The Belhar Sports Board did not in-

form anybody about the fencing at the

park or that they can restrict entry times.

Our problem is not the fence but it is

the times that the park is open for the

public. If it was such a big problem then

the needs of the public should also have

    been taken into consideration.

Now the sports board is hiding behind

the rules of the City, yet their chairman

has free access for his softball teams

while the tennis and basketball courts

are idle. The City must understand that

previously we could use the facility be-

    fore and afterwork.Now its lockedwhen

most of us are able to enjoy it.

    Belinda Walker, mayoral committee

member for community services and spe-

cial projects, replied to the complaint

pointing out that a few enquiries with re-

gard to this facility being used for walk-

ing and jogging have been received.

Our concern is the time slots that have

    been requested, she said.

The facility has one employee who

works from 07:30 to 16:00, so we have

asked walkers and joggers to adjust their

schedules to best fit in with these times

so that the City can accommodate the re-

    quests.

Should residents want to make ar-

rangements to use the facility, they can

speak to Keith Bruintjies at 021 952 1201.

Our facilities are available to all resi-

dents and the City does not exclude any-

one from using the facilities for their in-

    tended purpose.

    Restricted access petition,

    appeals fall on deaf ears

Aalwyn Park in Belhar, empty and unused.

Should the times change to serve the

community that uses it? Send your

    thoughts to [email protected].

    week.

    Captain Frederick van Wyk, provin-

cial police spokesperson, said on Mon-

day a total of 551 arrests were made, of

which most of them for charges relating

    to drugs.

    The police also confiscated mandrax

tablets to the value of R2 400, tik worth

    R10 000, dagga worth R2 000 and several

litres of alcohol, Van Wyk said.

Van Wyk says 44 of the arrests were

    wanted suspects, apprehended during

    tracing operations.

Suspects were arrested for crimes in-

    cluding murder, assault, drunk driving,

    malicious damage to property, house-

breaking, theft and the possession of an

    unlicensed firearm.

    According to Brigadier Vincent Bea-

ton, cluster commander, the past weeks

    operations were primarily focused on

    the eradication of firearms.

His staff seized 10 firearms and 84

rounds of ammunition within the clus-

    ter.

Beaton said the police are making an

impact as some of the suspects are using

real-like toy guns when committing rob-

    beries.

A zip gun and 10 replica toy guns were

    seized.

A total of 76 of the suspects were kept

in police cells overnight for committing

    less serious crimes including being

drunk in public and riotous behaviour.

    They were released on fines.

The Blue Downs cluster comprises the

mead, Elsies River, Belhar and Bellville

    South police stations.

    tension 13, Belhar.

The victim ended up with wounds in his

    right leg, armandhip.His 4-year-old daugh-

ter also suffered a wound to her right leg.

Both victims were taken to a nearby hos-

    pital where they were stabilised.

    Police recovered seven spent cartridges

at the scene and no arrests have been made

after the suspects fled the scene.

    in motivating the new learners.

Helping parents establish a regular read-

ing routine with their children, and renew-

ing their own commitment to root a culture

of reading, is Nalibali, the national reading-

for-enjoyment campaign, that has issued its

    2016 Story Power Promise.

Designed as a commitment pledge for both

parents and children to sign, the promise

outlines commitments made by the cam-

paign to help parents and caregivers across

the country establish reading habits with

the children in their lives. It also includes

corresponding promises for adults and chil-

dren to assist them in building new reading

habits and maintaining and growing exist-

    ing ones.

Reading and sharing stories with chil-

dren is one of the most powerful gifts you

can give them, explains Jade Jacobsohn,

    managing director of Nalibali.

Not onlydoes it help todevelop childrens

literacy skills, it also fires up those parts of

the brain concerned with imagination, emo-

    tion, sensation and movement.

Ultimately it helps to create the neural

    circuits that enable sophisticated thinking

and reasoning, helping children to do well

    at school.

Founded in 2012 by PRAESA (the Project

for the study of alternative education in

South Africa) and the DG Murray Trust,

Nalibali has been working with a growing

number of partners to get everyone in South

Africa excited about reading and storytel-

ling in English and other home languages.

    The campaign has achieved significant

    success through sustained mentoring and

    collaboration with communities, reading

    clubs, literacy organisations and volunteers

of all ages and has grown to include 810 read-

    ing clubs since its inception.

It is also helping to grow the library of

South African childrens literature and sto-

    ries through its bi-weekly reading-for-enjoy-

ment newspaper supplement and weekly ra-

dio stories. To date Nalibali has produced

51 stories, and in 2016 aims to add to thiswith

    a further eight stories.

We have made our promise to the nation

to assist and support children and adults in

    becoming strong and powerful readers

    through the development, translation and

distribution of literacy materials as well as

on-the-ground support and we hope that

they will join us on our literacy journey in

2016 as we work together to grow a nation

    that reads, continued Jacobsohn.

The StoryPower promise formspart of the

    campaigns broader Story Power campaign

with the clear message that anyone can

share a story anytime, anywhere. And, un-

derpinning the Nalibali methodology is the

idea that reading for enjoyment reaps the

best rewards as children who have enjoya-

    ble storytelling and reading experiences

with caregivers at home showmore motiva-

tion to read on their own.

With this in mind the campaign is asking

families to make reading a fun part of every

day this year by reading and sharing stories

together for just 15 minutes in their home

languages. Stories in a range of South Afri-

can languages are available from Nalibalis

web and mobisites, as are tips and ideas on

how to read and share them.

V Nalibali will be distributing the special promise to

members of its network of reading clubs and is avail

able for download by members of the public from

Nalibalis web and mobisites, www.nalibali.org and

    www.naliabli.mobi.

lcohol screenings will now be done at

any random time, day or night to en-

sure safer roads in theCity, said traffic

official Desir Benadie at a subcouncilmeet-

    ing held last week.

Benadie said that this initiative was one

ofmany strategies to be implemented in 2016

to improve service delivery in Cape Town.

    Statistics are alarming. Driving under

the influence of alcohol is by no means only

    problematic during night time hours.

In recent months, countless drivers have

been found guilty of this offence during the

day, especially in the mornings when driv-

ers are still under the influence from thepre-

    vious nights drinking, she said.

Such screenings will henceforth be done

    at allmajor roadblockoperationsaround the

    clock.

Apart from this project theCity is appoint-

ing 60 new traffic officers city wide.

Along with these new appointmetns, the

    department has also requested additional

    unmarkedvehicles tomonitormovingviola-

tions in the far northern areas of Kraaifon-

    tein and Brackenfell, she said.

Much focuswill be placed on themain taxi

routes, such as Old Paarl Road for instance.

Apart from normal operations a special-

ised taxi unit will also be deployed to opera-

tions in the area. They will focus on issues

    such as roadworthiness, illegal operations

    and permits.

    City clinics

    get FreeCall

    service lines

FreeCall lines have been installed at

24 of the City of Cape Towns health

clinics across the city, including the

clinics in Blue Downs, Eerste River,

    Wesbank, Bothasig, Durbanville and

    Parow.

    Residents can now report general

    service delivery issues while waiting

to be seen by clinic staff. More impor-

tantly, this has the potential to be a

valuable tool for our Health Director-

ate. If a client has aproblemat the clin-

ic, they can log that concern or make

any suggestions to address the issue in

real time. To date, client concerns

have been dealt with at clinic level.

This opens up a whole new world of

    possibilities, says the Citys Mayco

    member for health, Siyabulela Mam-

keli. FreeCall lines were first intro-

duced in 2012 as a means of allowing

    residents in disadvantaged areas to

communicate with the Citys call cen-

tre free of charge for general enquiries

and to report service requests. Todate,

142 FreeCall lines have been installed

    at municipal buildings, housing offi-

    ces, cash offices and libraries.

    TheCitysMaycomember for corpo-

    rate services, XantheaLimberg added:

We are pleased that our roll-out of

FreeCall lines at City clinics will aid

    residents to provide constructive feed-

back to the City so we can ensure that

    our residents receive the quality

health care they deserve. This has the

potential to further improve our servi-

    ces.

    Snake bites rife this summer

The presence of puff adders (pictured) and Cape cobras has seen an increase in the number of

snake bites in pets, says a local veterinary hospital with several branches across the Peninsula.

Snake bite treatment is a very expensive affair, but can save the life of a pet.

    MICHELLE LINNERT

    @linnertmb

    S

nakes soaking up the sun and slither-

ing away from veld fires often end up

    in residential backyards,making them

a serious adversary to domestic pets.

Because of this, veterinarians Ryan Nor-

    rie andNolanMoss at the TygerbergAnimal

Hospital say their hospital has recently seen

an increase in the number of snake bites in

    pets.

We have definitely seen an increase in

snake bites this year, Moss says. There

seems to be an increase across the Cape Pen-

    insula.

    He sayswhilenoaccuratenumbers areyet

available, the largest chunk of the bites are

taking place close to Table Mountain.

The reasons are simple, Moss says.

Snakes aremore active in hot, dryweather,

which may account for the increased num-

    bers recently.

Fires send snakes fleeing to gardens, houses

    Norrie agrees: Snakes are cold-blooded

animals that raise their body temperature

by lying in the sun or lower it by crawling

into the shade. So this means snake bites

will be less likely to happen in winter time

    as the snakes are hibernating.

Also something to think about is all of the

fires we are experiencing you find that

most wildlife will move to safer areas, and

this could be your back garden or even your

    house, Norrie says.

They have seen mostly Cape cobra or puff

adder snake bites over the last two months,

    Moss adds.

He explains a bit more about the chemical

reactions causedby the two toxins: Cape co-

bras are neurotoxic and cause paralysis of

the respiratory muscles, leading to death.

Puff adders are cytotoxic and bites cause se-

vere tissue swelling, with fluid, blood and

    protein loss.

In both cases anti-venom treatment redu-

ces the severity of clinical signs but must be

given in the early stages, Moss says.

According to him, cobra bite victims need

to be placed on a ventilator, normally for one

to three days, and they require intensive

care, while puff adder victims often develop

shock and multiple organ failure, requiring

intensive care and usually multiple plasma

    and blood transfusions.

    And treatment is not cheap.

The cost of treatment ... can escalate be-

yond R30 000 in some cases. Many animals

unfortunately die before they are presented

    to the clinic.

Moss adds cobra bites that are treated ag-

gressively and early, usually have a more

promising outcome, but not so with puff ad-

    der bites.

    Evenwith aggressive treatment the prog-

    nosis forpuff adderbites is alwaysguarded,

Moss says. I recently treated a staff mem-

bers dog that required four blood transfu-

sions, six plasma transfusions, and took

over one month to fully recover, he says.

Norrie says theyve seen some really sad cas-

es, but its not all doom and gloom.

Most of the time if a pet pulls through

from such an attack there are hardly any aft-

er-effects, but possible scarring or muscle

loss from dead tissue has been seen.

You wont see it very often, but if a pa-

tient was bitten on an extremity and to save

the pets life, amputation can be an option,

    he says.

We have seen some heartbreaking cases

where the outcome was death. In one case

we had two rottweilers that were bitten by

the same snake andboth dogswere put down

due to their state, says Norrie.

    Owners need to keep clear

He addswhen pets are bitten, owners need

to keep clear of the snakes to avoid being bit-

ten themselves. So how can owners avoid

    pets getting bitten?

There is no way of avoiding snake bites

at home short of permanently housing the

    pet, says Moss.

Pet owners need to be aware of the risks

when taking their animals on walks, and

adds they need to learn to identify the two

    snakes.

    Neither snake is particularly aggressive.

Pet owners should never attempt to confront

    a snake, Moss says.

Once bitten, time is of the essence, espe-

cially where the Cape cobra is concerned.

Only a few veterinary practices stock an-

ti-venomdue to its high cost, and fewer prac-

tices still have 24-hour care and ventilators,

    for the same reason.

    Pet owners should acquaint themselves

with practices that are able to treat snake

bites. If a pet is bitten by either snake, they

should immediately be transported to a 24-

hour facility that possesses a ventilator and

    stocks anti-venom.

Norrie says their facility is one of few that

stocks the required anti-venom and is open

at all hours. The anti-venom we have on

stock is the same used on humans. Please

note that it is a very expensive medication.

ifty years after the destruction of Dis-

trict Six, David Kramer has assembled

a talented cast to pay homage to the vi-

brant culture that once defined the area.

Over 60 000 residents were relocated from

District Six in the 1960s after it was declared

a white group area. A way of life was de-

stroyed. Today hardly anything remains of

what was once a thriving, densely populat-

    ed, multi-ethnic and multicultural commu-

    nity.

Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre, lo-

cated in District Six, will pay tribute to the

place and its people withDistrict Six Kana-

    While previews start onTuesday2Februa-

onThursday 11 February, exactly fifty years

    after the 1966 declaration.

Kramer, who together with his theatre

    partner, Taliep Petersen, created hugely

successful musicals like District Six, Fairy-

land and Kat and the Kings, will celebrate

the vibrant musical culture found in the

streets, halls, hotels, clubs and bioscopes of

    1960s District Six.

be, he says. These stalwarts shared their

    recollections of Distric SixwithKramer, but

    When Philani Dladla cracked open

his first book a heavy political

read he had no idea hed one day

    become a published author him-

    self.

As a 12-year-old boy reading The

    Last White Parliament by Frederik

van Zyl Slabbert, he also had no in-

kling of the journey he would have

to endure to write his own book.

It was this journey that Dladla

recently shared at the Big Issue

breakfast, and his work to inspire

    others to start reading.

    The regular breakfast event is

used to raise funds in support of

    the magazine.

    Dladla spent years sleeping un-

der the Nelson Mandela Bridge in

    Johannesburg, trapped in drug ad-

diction. It was his love for books,

inspired when he was 12, which ul-

    timately saved him.

His first book was a gift on his

    birthday from his mothers em-

ployer. Growing up in rural KwaZ-

    ulu Natal, Dladla could hardly

speak English when he was given

that book. But he pored over it, in-

tent on understanding it and un-

    locking the promise ofmore books.

    The book collection of hismothers

employer was later left to him.

    In his early twenties, Dladla

worked as a health caregiver. But

the freedom that camewith the pay

    cheque saw him experimenting

    with drugs.

It was something I didnt have

before. I was overwhelmed by the

    independence, he says.

    His addiction soon spiralled out

of control, and he started selling

his possessions to buy drugs when

    he ran out of money.

Drugs changed my life. I de-

pended on them. I could go days

without eating, but I couldnt go

    fourhourswithout drugs. I soldmy

    things and eventually, when I

couldnt pay my rent anymore, I

    was kicked out.

The only place Dladla felt he

could go was the bridge, where he

lived with other drug users. When

he arrived, he was forced to hand

    over his clothes as rent.

They told me nothing was for

nothing. Living on the street is

    dangerous. People fight over sim-

ple things. You see people dying

from drugs. Its everyman for him-

    self, he says.

But he managed to hang onto his

books, and eventually he started to

sell them to make a living.

    Dladla would review each book,

    selling them to passing motorists

    with prices determined by how

    good each book was.

I hadnothing left. All I hadwere

my books. I had to work with what

    I had, he says.

One day, Dladla was spotted by

    a young filmmaker, who produced

    a documentary on his mobile

    bookshop.

I shared my story. By that time

I was nine months clean and run-

ning a soup kitchen for my friends

living under the bridge with the

money I would have spent on

drugs. Iwas also running a reading

club for children in Joubert Park,

near where I lived, he says.

    The documentary spurred an in-

    flux of donations which allowed

him to expand the reading club and

    teach children computer skills.

Working with kids is always a

nice experience. We read and I help

    them with homework, he says.

But he has had to leave some

    friends behind along the way.

Its hard to help someone who

doesnt want help. I had to leave be-

hind my friends who do drugs and

focus on the reading clubs, he

    says.

Dladla has now told this journey

in a book, The Pavement Book-

    worm.

I always dreamed I would be

published. When I was living on

the street I would write down ev-

    erything that happened, hoping

one day someone would come and

    publish it, he says.

But I didnt write it to make

money. I wrote it to tell the story.

    Ive always loved telling stories

and, even in the hard times, put-

ting a smile on someones face us-

    ing books.

His love of reading saved him from despair

Philani Dladla has written a book, The Pavement Bookworm, about how

books helped him quit his drug addiction and move off the streets.

In the high-tech world of the modern neona-

tal ICU there is no substitute for breastmilk.

When a vulnerable babys mother is unable

to supply breast milk, donated breast milk

can offer this life-saving gift from another

    mother.

Neonatologist Dr Alan Horn of Groote

Schuur Hospital says: I firmly believe that

the practice of milk banking is still in its in-

fancy, globally and especially in South Afri-

ca. I expect it will steadily increase in pro-

    file.

Donating breast milk is an act that in-

volves the least pain and themost gain, com-

pared to any other human tissue or organ

donation. It is potentially life-saving and is

worth more than equipment or staff. The

term milk bank is perfect it simultane-

ously describes the safety and the value of

    donated milk.

Milk Matters is such a breast milk bank

devoted to saving the lives of primarily pre-

mature babies in neonatal ICUs who do not

have access to their own mothers milk. It

has depots in locations around the city, in-

    cluding Brackenfell, Durbanville, Milner-

    ton, Panorama and Parow.

The need for donor milk is mainly when

a mother is too ill to provide breast milk or

is unable to physically be with or regularly

visit her baby in hospital. Donor milk may

also be needed for a short time in the case

of multiple births such as triplets, when the

    mothermay initiallynothave enoughbreast

    milk for her babies.

Already the demand for donormilk far ex-

ceeds supplies and requests from doctors for

    donor milk continue to increase.

    MilkMatters, a registered non-profit orga-

    nisation, started providing donor breast

milk to the neonatal ICUs of Cape Towns

biggest state hospitals in 2003. To date 30 hos-

pitals, in both the state and private sector,

    have received donormilk fromMilkMatters

and in addition the organisation has helped

five hospitals set up their own in-housemilk

banks. Most of the donormilk goes to babies

in state hospitals, where the need is highest.

Since just 50ml of breast milk can feed a

baby of less than a kg for 24 hours, mothers

do not need to donate large quantities of

breast milk to make a significant impact.

Some donor mothers make once-off dona-

tions of stockpiled milk that is not required

for their own baby, whilst othermothers do-

nate for periods varying from a few weeks

    to a year or more.

Milk Matters provides donors with sterile

containers, which can be collected from one

    of the 25depots,wherebatches of frozenmilk

can also be delivered. All milk is pasteur-

    ised.

    MilkMatters, a registered non-profit orga-

nisation, relies on donations from individu-

als and organisations both to maintain the

    current service and to expand.

Hy gaan dit nie maak nie, is aan sy ou-

ma en nou voog, Louise Hartnick Willemse

    van Wesbank, ges.

Op Woensdag 13 Januarie het hy hulle eg-

ter verkeerd bewys en sy eerste skooldag by

die Laerskool Hoofweg begin, vertel die trot-

se ouma met n bre glimlag.

Louise, n enkelma, sien al 7 jaar om na

Wazliano, wat as babamet TB en breinvlies-

ontsteking gediagnoseer is. Hy is by die

inspuitings. Dalk was dit te veel.

Volgens die ouma het Wazliano vir weke

    daarna gereeld onophoudelik gehuil.

Een oggend hoor ek net n doodsroggel.

Sy o was besig om om te dop en daar het

    skuim in symondhoekeverskyn. Sy liggaam

    was verlam.

Wazliano is na die Tygerberg-hospitaal ge-

    haaswaar die slegte nuus aanLouisemeege-

deel is. Die dokter het ges hulle kan nie

veel vir hom doen nie en dat hy TB en brein-

    vliesontsteking het. Louise het gesukkel

    om die nuus te verwerk.

Ek het geglo my kleinkind sal nie dood-

gaan nie. Hy is n vegter.

Wazliano het daarna n operasie van agt

ure ondergaan. Die dokter het ges hy gaan

dit nie maak nie. Hy was in n koma. Ons

    is voorberei op die ergste.

Wazliano het bygekom en is n maande se

    hospitaalbehandeling ontslaan. Hy sou by

    die huis verder versorg word.

Hy was baie maer, net vel en been. Hy

    MORE MONEY MATTERS

A trauma is a very frightening event, such as:

-Where your life or someone elses life was in danger

-Where you or someone else got seriously hurt

If you keep struggling with some of the following symptoms for longer than about a month

you could have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD):

The trauma keeps frightening you by repeated memories or nightmares

You try hard to avoid thinking about the trauma and you avoid people, places or situations

that remind you of the trauma

You have negative changes in your thinking or feelings, like blaming yourself, having strong

negative beliefs about yourself or others, feeling cut off or distant from other people

You become sensitive for danger so you fight more than before, you are always on the

lookout for possible danger, you struggle to concentrate and you sleep poorly

You could take part in the Shared Roots study if:

    You have been diagnosed
