I mean, I grew up in Belhar for a long time. I have seen a lot of bad things happen around me. It would be nice to chan- ge the community somehow,” Graham told TygerBurger on Friday. We caught up with him and fellow Top three contestants Buhle Madlala and Sivu Xabanisa before they took to the stage at the TygerValley shopping centre for the Valley of the Stars concert. Graham, who shares a name with his fa- ther and has two elder brothers, is deeply grounded. “I was fortunate enough to grow up in a household that, regardless of what was going on around us, had a lot of love,” he says. “My father and mother taught us correc- tly. No matter what situation we were in, we always had a good foundation.” Graham says he understands how difficult it can be for people from his old neck of the woods who may not have the same solid ba- se. “Maybe it’s a lot more difficult for people who don’t have this foundation – it makes things a lot more challenging. But regard- less of the situation, parents need to play their role.” Graham said children also needed to “step up”, especially if they are not fortunate enough to have parents. “I know, it’s easier said than done, but it’s all up to what they do with their education.” He wants to give youngsters hope. “The main thing is that if you have the right attitude and mindset, you can overco- me any situation you’re in. “You just need to start from within, to make a decision to uplift your life. Graham started his new job when he got back from the island, and is planning on marrying long term girlfriend Erin Arendse after he was proclaimed winner on Sunday. He says the experience has changed him, but he remains with his feet planted firmly on terra firma. “I think people recognise me now to take a picture,” he said, but added that until Fri- day, there had been no fan fun yet. All that may change after Sunday’s announcement, though. But it won’t change him. “I just feel like a normal guy.” Fellow top three contestants Buhle and Si- vu say they also learnt a lot from the 28-day island experience. “I learnt so much more about me, things that, one, I took for granted, or two, didn’t really acknowledge, or three, never really knew existed,” said Buhle. Sivu said on Friday all he’d wish to do with the money is see his younger siblings through a good and solid education. “My studies have always been a challenge and I will not stop until I reach the PhD le- vel,” the Astrophysics student said. At Delft Academy Football Club soccer ismore than a game, it’s making a differenceto the relationship between parents.Brent Fisher is one of the fathers taking

the time to be at the Voorbrug Sports Fieldin Delft every Saturday and the biggest re-ward is his son’s love.He explained that he is a recovering drug

addict who is now converted but was stillstruggling to get acceptance and love fromhis son.“Up to a few months ago he still hated

me,” says Fisher.“I was looking for a way to get through

to him that I wanted to make up for the losttime that I had not been a proper father andknew that sport, especially soccer, could beone of the ways.”He discovered that the Delft Academy

club was going through tough times withchildren leaving the club and fewer mem-bers joining up.“What impressed me was that even

through tough times coach Harold Philan-

der andwifeVicky stillmanaged tokeep theteams together and the community notifiedwhen and where games took place.“I saw the potential the children had on

the soccer pitch and knew I wanted to bepart of it to help childrenmake the right de-cisions and avoid the peer pressure of get-ting into drugs and gangsterism.”Fisher enrolled his son in the team and

that is when their relationship startedchanging for the better.“He has experienced that I am now here

to support himand it ismaking a huge diffe-rence. It made me think of how much morefathers there are who are not there for theirchildren.“I started approaching fathers I knowand

encouraged them to start being a part of thedifference in their children’s lives, and theclub is growing again.“Myplea is that all parentsmust takenote

of how our children need us to guide theminto a positive future.“Its not just about money, its about ma-

king time to let them know how much youcare.Wemust invest this time in their livesto keep them off the street,” says Fisher.

A plan to foster the fight against crime andgangsterism is in full swing as the City ofCape Town’s Metro Police Department isgaining ground in its efforts to prevent cri-minality.The Department has, in recent years, ex-

panded its strategy to curb gangsterism anddrug abuse by incorporating a number of so-cial crime prevention initiatives aimed atthe youth. In the most recent initiative, 160 learners

from four primary schools in Elsies Riverparticipated ina three-week child safetypro-ject, amid concerns from the communityabout a lack of after-school activities and theimpact of anti-social behaviour on the child-ren.MetroPolice,with theassistanceof theCa-

pe Heart Theatre Company, spent threeweeks at the Uitsig, Tygersig, Holy TrinityandClark Primary schools, putting togetherproductions focusing on different themessuch as bullying, peer pressure and gangste-rism.The highlight was when learners perfor-

med the plays at a special event in Cravenbyon Saturday 17 May 2014.“The idea was to keep the learners occu-

pied in ameaningfulway, but also to addressthe very real issues they face in their com-munities on a daily basis.” said the city’smayoral committee member for safety andsecurity, JP Smith.“In fact, the themes dealt with during this

project are crucial to the social crime pre-vention narrative that the Metro Police De-partment has woven into its interactionswith young people,” said Smith. The department is also wrapping up a se-

ries of Youth Academy camps that have as-sisted youth at risk between the ages of 13and 16 from schools across Cape Town, inconjunction with the Western Cape Govern-ment Education Department. The YouthAcademy was launched in 2013 and to date, more than 300 learners have already atten-ded 11 camps at the Rotary Club in SimonsTown in this financial year and the depart-mentwill have exceeded 500 attendees by the

end of June, at a total cost of just over R1,4million.This includes accommodation, food,

transport, entertainers, sleeping bags, toi-letries and staff costs. This past weekend25 learners from the Bishop Lavis Schoolof Skills and 25 Learners from West CliffSchool of Skills in Bellville attended theweekend camp.“We cannot underestimate the impor-

tance of these initiatives in the overallfight against substance abuse and gangste-rism,” continued Smith.“Positive reinforcement, options and ex-

posure to opportunities outside their eve-ryday realities can act as a powerful cata-lyst for young people who want to plot adifferent path for themselves,”says Smith.“These initiatives also underscore our

commitment to law enforcement, but alsoaddress the root causes of crime as part ofthe Mayor’s Gang, Youth Violence andDrug Prevention Campaign, which inclu-des numerous interventions and program-mes by almost every directorate in the Ci-ty.“Every young person needs to undergo

a rite of passage into adulthood and as so-ciety we are failing to offer that option forschool-leaving youth who find themselvesunemployed after school and end up loite-ring on street corners until the gangs wooand recruit them with promises of prospe-rity and a sense of identity and belonging.“MetroPolicewill play its role inhelping

offer an alternative rite of passage that in-volves joining a different ‘family’ whenthey join us on these camps, the follow-upactivities through our Metro PoliceNeighbourhood Safety Officers thereafterand ultimately when they join the MetroPolice Cadets.”Another major focus area is awareness

campaigns in schools and communities.Between January 2012 and mid-May 2014,the department conducted 56 search opera-tions at schools across the metropole aswell as 115 drug awareness shows with theK9 Unit.

Plan to put youth onpositive path

Learners from one of four Elsies River primary schools act out their drama as part of a ChildSafety project spearheaded by the City’s Metro Police Department in Cravenby on Saturday.

Holiday dreams turned into a horror storyfor a family from Bishop Lavis.Since, police have warned people to be ca-

reful when responding to advertising on theinternet. In February this year the complainant res-

ponded to an advertisement on the OLXweb-site and booked accommodation for the Eas-ter holidays.Everything seemed legitimate, including a

Holiday scam

Drag racers. A cop party dropping in. Ahigh-speed chase.Five arrests. This was the high-adrenaline stuff of an

integrated police and traffic operationwhen they disrupted an illegal drag raceon Robert SobukweRoad near the Univer-sity of the Western Cape last Sunday.During the blitz operation late on Sun-

day four arrestsweremade, but a fifth sus-pect first took officers on an unwantedtour of the highway at breakneck speed, said City of Cape Town traffic servicesspokesperson Richard Coleman.“Officers arrested five suspects for reck-

less and negligent driving but one driversped off, leading officers on a high-speedchase along the N1 incoming,” said Cole-man.

The drag-racer rammed one of theGhost Squad vehicles during the pursuitand ran into a Jeep on Vanguard Drive, causing injuries to both the officers andthe SUV’s driver, he said.Police eventually caught the offender in

Thornton. He faces charges of attempted murder,

fleeing the scene of an accident and reck-less and negligent driving, amongst othercharges.“If only the driver had adhered to the

instructions of our officers in the first pla-ce, the charge sheet would have read verydifferently, but he insisted on putting hisown life and the lives of other road usersat risk because of sheer stupidity.“I hope the courts throw the book at

him,” said Coleman.

The Cloete street taxi rank borderingParow Station is a constant headachefor theCity council andcommuters ali-

ke.Close to 40 000 commuters who move

through this area per day are exposed to thehigh incidence of criminality and the viola-tion of by-laws here.Subcouncil 4 chairperson Clive Justus is

now turningup theheat for different partiesto adopt a “soft boundary” approach andwork together to sort this area out.At a recent CPF meeting, feedback from

Warrant Officer Jacques Voigt, the mana-ger of sector policing in sector 3, painteda picture of policing success here.Voigt said there is an emphasis on “block

approach” in the Parow CBD and with thatin mind, there has been a clamp down onpetty crimes, specifically in the station andtaxi rank areas. He said this approach is tar-geted at crimes such as public drunkenness, loitering, the selling of counterfeit mer-chandise and the breaking of other by-laws.But Justus is calling for more intensive

action from the Parow police to help put thesituation at the taxi rank in order. “Their

mandate is to offer safety to all residents ofSouth Africa. It cannot be expected that thecity’s law enforcement manages to crackdown on all the drug sales, distribution ofcounterfeitmerchandise, possession of dan-gerous weapons and other criminal activi-ties here,” he said.He has also called on the city to release

ten more rent-a-cops for the subcouncil 4area tohelpwith the enforcement of by-lawshere.In a letter to the City of Cape Town’s regi-

onal operationsmanager, Justus demandedimmediate action against vagrants unlaw-fully occupying an empty building, and themismanagement of litter.“Litter from the area ismerely swept into

the roadway for the area cleaning team tosweep up.“This is double handling of litter. The cle-

aning team on the station must dispose ofall litter on site and not allow it to be trans-ferred into the public area,” he said.According to Justus, the response was a

promise to immediate “remedial action”.He said part of the problem in the area

was that the Parow police station employsa new station manager on average everythree months, the result being that there isno consistent plan.

Years of hard work paid off for GrandWestCSI bursary fund recipients when they we-re honoured at a gala dinner.

The 34 recipients come from all over theprovince and completed studies in thefields of mathematics, technology and sci-ence at seven tertiary institutions in CapeTown.

The recipients include Shaakira Afrika,Kim Cloete and Ashley Botha from BishopLavis, Shehan Classen from Ravensmead,Tazna Peters from Belhar and Kurt Tem-mers from Bonteheuwel.

A total of R9m in bursaries has been han-ded over since 2007 when the youngsterswere selected as worthy recipients of theinaugural GrandWest CSI tertiary BursaryFund.

According to a statement, they have sin-ce excelled. In recognition of their achieve-ments, theywere invited to attend a specialcelebratory dinner atGrandWest onThurs-day 15 May.

At inception, the GrandWest CSI Burs-aryFundpledgedR5mover a five-year peri-od, but an additional R4m has been contri-buted toward the tertiary education of over700 financially needy students.

There are no expectations of work frombursary students on completion of theirstudies, nor do they need to repay theirbursary. The only expectation is that thestudents participate in 40 hours of volun-teer work at a community project in theirarea of residencewhich, it is hoped, will in-stil an ethos of selflessness in students.

“We are delighted by the success of ourstudents and hope they will go on to usetheir education wisely, to enrich not onlytheir own lives, but also those of everyonearound them,” saidGrandWest generalma-nager Mervyn Naidoo.

“For many of the students, they are thefirst in their family, or even their commu-nity to graduate. They have the ability butthe sad reality is that without financial as-sistance they would not have been able topursue their studies.Wehave received a lotof positive feedback from various universi-ties,whichwearedelightedby, but ourulti-mate objective is to equip our studentswiththe knowledge and means to create satisfy-ing and fulfilling careers for themselves.”
