There seems to be light at the endof the tunnel for frustrated com-muters who have to drive at asnail’s pace along along the R27and Blaauwberg Road every day.

The City of Cape Town on Mon-day confirmed that construction onthe road linking Sandown Road andthe MR28/N7 will start in June.

Completion of the project is esti-mated for December next year.

The traffic congestion along thesetwo main roads out of Table Viewhas increased dramatically overthe last couple of years due to rapidexpansion in the area. Of late the in-crease in road construction, mainlyto accommodate the lanes and busstations for the MyCiTi bus service,has worsened the situation.

The spend on infrastructure bythe city is an effort to address the

traffic problems by providing an ef-ficient public transport systemalong the West Coast.

Construction on the Sandownlink which will provide a much-needed third exit out of the TableView area was scheduled to start inNovember last year but has been onhold following a dispute between lo-cal developers and the city’s envi-ronmental authorities.

Developers, Parklands Joint Ven-ture – made up of the Aska PropertyGroup and Milnerton Estates – andthe city’s environmental and herit-age management branch were atodds over certain requirementsthat would mean sacrificing muchviable commercial land.

“This parcel of land was previ-ously studied and parcels of fynboswere identified and their protectionwas taken into consideration in theplanning of future developmentsthen. Now the city’s environmental

department requires some addi-tional 90 hectares of land,” Aska’smarketing director Tony Clarkewas quoted by TygerBurger lastyear.

The office of Brett Herron, maycomember for transport, roads andstormwater confirmed the issuesthat caused the original delay havebeen resolved. “We expect the ap-proval by the provincial govern-ment’s planning advisory board ofthe third development framework(Rivergate) rezoning by the end ofApril. The subdivision plan willthen be processed by the city. Thedeveloper will then appoint the con-tractor. It is expected that the con-tractor will be on site by the end ofJune,” Herron’s spokesman,Arthur Clayton said.

Road works that are currentlyunder way or projects scheduled tocommence include:

. MyCiTi construction on Race-

course Road (linking Otto du Ples-sis and Koeberg is set for comple-tion in September;

. Extension of Sandown Road tolink with the MR28 and N7 is sched-uled to begin in June and be com-pleted in December 2013;

. Rehabilitation of the R27 fromRacecourse Road to Sandown Roadis scheduled for 2015;

. N7 freeway extension (inter-change access to M5 link to Melk-bosstrand) is scheduled to com-mence in May 2012 and be complet-ed in November 2014;

. Potsdam MyCiTi road north ofBlaauwberg intersection is sched-uled to commence in June and becompleted in July 2013;

. Koeberg Road MyCiTi lanesplanned for 2013/2014, and

. Blaauwberg Road MyCiTilanes from R27 to Koeberg (widen-ing of the road included) is sched-uled for completion in May 2013.

Brown putrid juice drips down his fingersas thecornerof thebag is rippedopen.Thefingers nimbly feel for something solid -of value.

“See bossy, if you can’t see, you must feel.This could have been a 10c piece or maybe awoman’s earring. It’s like finding the soft spoton a woman’s body.”

Mogamat Rajap moves onto the next bag inthe big, black container.

The smell of decay, buzzing flies, and antsand fat white maggots crawling over the edgeof the bin don’t hinder his search at all.

Born in Hanover Park and growing up inAtlantis, Mogamat’s mother Farieda strug-gled as a single parent of nine children.

“My mother was a Grandpa addict. I couldnot see her wasting money like that. That iswhen I started stealing,” he says.

When sent on his regular trips to the shopto buy his mother’s drug of choice, the youngMogamat chose to pinch the headache pow-der and rather keep the money.

“Because tomorrow we would need moneyfor bread.”

His crime was exposed when he was 13.“My mom was very disappointed because

she didn’t bring me up like that. That is whenshe started treating me like a man. I startedstaying out late and smoking dagga.”

Despite a hard life, he has not been in prison.“I can thank God for that I don’t want my ass

in stitches. Just because it hasn’t happened I’mnot saying it can’t happen but you can’t feel iceblocks in my blood yet,” he says.

It is for this reason that he has chosen tocriss-cross the streets in West Beach rummag-ing through other people’s garbage for the lastfive years.

“We are here, not because of drugs of drink,but because of stress factors. Having a job isnot about what you know, it is about who youdrink with,” he summarises his experiencewith the favouritism of some former employ-ees.

Life is expensive and that is why he is sothankful for the goodness of others. He hasfound that respect can come from anywhere.

“Life is dear. The white people throw awaydigital and there are houses where people putout good food,” he says.

“Look here bossy, this is my sentimental.”Scratching around in a gym bag hanging

from his trolley he produces a white, oil-stained take-away paper.

“The police picked me up one night. Theyhad to drive past my sleeping place and I asked

them to stop so that I can just get somethingto eat, but they wouldn’t, and I was so hun-gry,” he says with a hand on his stomach.

“When we got to the station a policemangave me this, an African. A full packet ofwarm slap chips,” he says with big eyes.

He carefully puts thepaper back in the sidepocket of the bag.

His relationship withthe police is an ongoingtrial. They are stoppedregularly and the goodson their trolleysearched. Sometimes, hesays, articles that werelawfully mined in thebins are confiscated.

Asked what his biggestfind was, his trawlingpartner Sydney Ryckchips in: “There toomuch.”

“But the best I found inone day was a laptop -working, a DVD playerand a PlayStation2. A po-liceman still owns meR30 for the PlayStation,”Mogamat says.

Sydney carefully putsa cordless hairdryer onthe ground that he fishedout of the bin. He findsshort cream-colouredcargopants, lifts themupin front of him and twirlsthem around inspectingthe condition. His handsdeftly check the pocketsbefore folding it andputting it next to thehairdryer.

“In life nothing is im-possible, it is what you make of it,” he sayspicking up another trash bag. “But it iswhen you ask for help (from people) anddon’t get it, that you get annoyed and dothings that you should not and do not wantto do,” Mogamat says of some peoples’ deci-sion to become involved in crime.

Mogamat and Sydney sell their goods atthe Potsdam Taxi Rank and here too it isa struggle.

“We sell to the Africans but sometimesthey take the stuff instead of asking for a‘pasella’. Then there is a fight, the policeshow up and they say we are the thieves.

We don’t even make R150 a day,” he says.There is a strong sense of community

among the 30 -odd trolley pushers in the WestBeach area. Last year they set up a Christmastree behind a local shopping centre.

“We had a big Christmas tree – snow white

– and there was food. We were about 30 peopleand had a big party. People stopped and gaveus R150, R200. After everyone ate we loadedtwo trolleys with food to take to those whostay in the bush with us,” he says as the sunreflects off his metallic blue sunglasses.

“As for me, I am satisfied with life. I knowif I do wrong there are consequences.”

Ryck is gently downing two half-full bottlesof liquor. Next to the bottles on the curb arethree packets of Steak and Chops seasoning,a sachet of Aromat, the pants and hairdryer.

It was a fruitful stop and ahead on the nextcorner another bin awaits.

Concerted efforts across the world aregearing towards “going green”, but Mil-nerton Lagoon must have misunder-stood the term.

Last week the lagoon went almost com-pletely green, and upon closer inspectionthe thick algae had a few raising an eyebrowand others pulling up their nose.

A few days later and it disappeared againjust as quickly as it made its unwelcome ap-pearance.

TheCity ofCapeTownsays, however, thatit is perfectly natural – nothing to be con-cerned about, especially at this time of year.

Algae are photosynthetic organisms thatoccur in most habitats. They vary fromsmall, single-celled forms to complex multi-cellular forms, such as the giant kelp thatgrow up to 65 metres in length.

The “going green” statement made in theintroduction isn’t quite as far fetched as onewould think.

According to Wikipedia, algae fuel mightbe an alternative to fossil fuel and uses algaeas its source of natural deposits.

The websites reads: “Several companiesand government agencies are funding efforts

to reduce capital and operating costs andmake algae fuel production commerciallyviable. Harvested algae, like fossil fuel, re-lease CO2 when burnt but unlike fossil fuelthe CO2 is taken out of the atmosphere bythe growing algae.”

The first training sessions for this year’sYouth Dance Challenge kicked off thisweek.

The event, which is being held for the thirdyear, is organised by DanceCraft Studio (pre-viously known as Fred Astaire Tygervalley)in conjunction with media partner Tyger-Burger.

Owner of DanceCraft Studio Marina Mi-lanovic says the choice to sever ties with theFred Astaire franchise affords them greaterfreedom to be involved in social dancingprojects such as the Youth Dance Challenge,

Humira Live and Dance for Life Campaign andthe Artscape School Arts Festival.

She adds that apart from the name changeeverything else remains the same.

High school learners from 23 schools in fourareas will compete in the competition thisyear.

Schools from the northern suburbs takingpart are Sarepta, Silver Sands and WesternCape Sport School, Table View High, AbbottsCollege,BloubergrantHigh,CBCSt John’sPri-vate School, Durbanville High School, Ches-terhouse, Curro Private, DF Malan, Settlers,Parow, Northlink, Brackenfell, Monument

Park, Edgemead High School and Tyger-berg.

City bowl schools participating are SeaPointHigh,CapeTownHigh,HaroldCressy,Gardens Commercial and Jan van Riebeeck.

Thanks to the in-creased number ofschools this year, thecompetition will take ona different format.

“The main change isthat we will run the firstthree competitions sepa-rately for each of thefour areas. Each areawill have a quarter-final,semi-final and final com-petition. The UltimateFinal event will then seethe best couples in eachof the areas battle it outon the dancefloor at the same time,” Mi-lanovic explained.

She added the couples will this year betrained in dancing the box rumba, mamboand quick step.

Three schools have offered Dancecraft the

use of their halls for training. Schools fromthe city bowl will be trained at Gardens Com-mercial High, Kuils River schools will trainat the Western Cape Sport School in KuilsRiver, and schools from Milnerton and Blou-

berg will train at Blouber-grant High School.

Learners from the Bel-lville, Durbanville andother areas will be trainedat the DanceCraft StudioTygervalley.

The first classes tookplace on Monday (12March).

“We are delighted thatthe competition has be-come so popular. It is fan-tastic to see that schoolsthat have participated lastyear cannot wait to do it

again. It is also so exciting that in this thirdyear so many new schools, from various partsof town are joining,” Milanovic said.

Milanovic said they are also in the processof creating a website for the event(www.youthdancechallenge.info).

Members of the ACVV Koeberghave again fallen foul of the law.

The entire team of staff and man-agement of this charity organisa-tion in Melkbosstrand will have thecuffs slapped on them on Friday 30March. The expected raid at theACVV offices will take place at08:30.

Although the event will takeplace in a light-hearted spirit it isaimed at raising funds for a very se-rious issue – education.

The organisation believes thatcommunity upliftment should be-

gin with the young with educationbeing the key.

“By helping children to build agood educational foundation wegive them the tools to build a betterfuture for themselves and theirchildren,” says Nikki Pretoriusfrom the ACVV Koeberg.

It is with this thought in mindthat the organisation began a GradeR class for children from the sur-

rounding disadvantaged communi-ties in February 2010.

“Through proper Grade R educa-tion we give these children a fight-ing chance so they may start prima-ry school with the same excitementthat all children should feel on theirfirst dayofGrade 1,” saysPretorius.

Thanks to several donations theACVV Koeberg have managed tohelp 20 children on their journey to

a brighter future.Pretorius stresses that a lack of

pre-schooling put these children ata severe disadvantage.

“From here they will continue tostruggle, repeating many grades.Due to frustration and a feeling ofinadequacy many of them will havedropped out by the time they reachhigh school,” she says adding thatthe social consequences of this is

evident all around us.“We appeal to the public to visit

us in prison at the MelkbosstrandBirkenhead Centre where we willhave an officer with a bail-out-box,taking collections to pay our bailmoney,” she explains the fundrais-ing side of the event.

A local bird rehabilitation centre in TableView has become home to a family of newhatchlings.

A colony of 53 little Hartlaub’s gull chickswere removed from the roof of a commercialbuilding recently and relocated to the South-ern African Foundation for the Conservationof Coastal Birds (Sanccob) for rearing.

Hartlaub’s gull parents often choose thesafety of nesting on roofs or in the gutters ofhigh-rise buildings.

The birds’ habit of causing damage and dis-turbance often sees them being removedfrom these nesting places.

This is however an illegal practice andpunishable by law under the Seal and Sea-bird Protection Act.

“The removal or relocation of Hartlaub’sgulls is prohibited by law without the neces-sary permit,” said Nicky Stander, Sanccob’sresident rehabilitation manager.

The 53 chicks were shivering and soakingwet upon arrival at Sanccob but the volun-teers soon saw to it that each one waswarmed and cleaned and fluffy again.

Volunteers will spend the next six to eightweeks feeding and caring for these birds.

A Melkbosstrand business owner is re-gretting the day he decided to hire a localmoving company to transport his belong-ings from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

Johann Badenhorst, owner of a local guesthouse in Melkbosstrand, made use of AAMovers & Storage to handle his move fromWaterkloof in October last year.

Badenhorst says although their quote wasmore expensive than that of another well-known moving company, he decided to sup-port local and chose AA Movers & Storage.

“Their website looks very professional andthey guarantee a very professional service,”Badenhorst says.

This however proved to be where the pro-fessionalism stopped.

“The people who came to load the goods inWaterkloof were from a different movingcompany. Despite being assured that onlyclosed, secure removal trucks were used forthe relocation they loaded my billiards tableinto a trailer,” he says.

The furniture was loaded on 14 October andmeant for delivery in Melkbosstrand a weeklater.

WhenBadenhorst enquiredon theprogressof the move on 19 October he learned that hisbelongings had without his consent beenstored at a self storage unit in Midrand.

“Their excuse for storing my belongingswas that their truckbrokedownand that theystruggled to find parts over the weekend. Ican’t think that a business that claims to de-liver as a professional service as they say ontheir website, can only have one truck,”Badenhorst says.

It eventually took an irate Badenhorst fourweeks (10 November) to finally have his fur-niture delivered in Melkbosstrand.

“I suffered a loss of income for three weeksas chairs that I was supposed to use in my cof-fee shop were stuck along with my other be-longings in Midrand.”

This was however the least of Badenhorst’sworries. When his belongings finally arrivedthere were a host of breakages and some ofthe items were completely missing.

“The feet of my TV stand unit have beenbroken off, my leather chairs have beenscuffed up and one lounge leather chair hada cut in the back of the seat, the felt of mybilliards table needs to be replaced and onebox of Murano glassware which is irreplacea-ble is completely broken. I can only guess that

it must have been dropped.”Badenhorst stresses that every-

thing – even the chairs – was bubblewrapped and boxed up individuallyby himself and his mother. All boxescontaining glassware were clearlymarked “fragile”.

The loss suffered by Badenhorsttotals a whopping R82 899. This in-cludes the replacement or fixing of14 items such as the box of Muranoglassware (R8 000), restoration of anantique door (R4 000) and two fancytub chairs (R6 500).

Among the missing items is apainting valued at R12 000.

What further frustrates Baden-horst is the elusiveness of the com-pany’s owner Gina Moniz, despite amyriad of emails and telephonecalls.

“You cannot get to her. The secre-tary and manager keep you awayfrom her. Neither can you gain ac-cess to their offices or storage roomwithout an appointment. If youdon’t have an appointment you arenot allowed in. I had to stand outsidethe parking area and talk to themthrough the gate. I think somethingis definitely not kosher there,”Badenhorst says, adding that he al-so only received an invoice afterstaging a sit-in in the reception oftheir Killarney Gardens offices.

He says in hindsight it is apparent thebusiness is a one-man show which hedoesn’t mind, if they can deliver profes-sional service.

Badenhorst has taken up his complaintswith the company and has been given reas-surances since November that his belong-ings will be fixed and replaced.

“Nothing has been done. They gave mea name of a business in Paarden Islandcalled ‘Fine Restorers’. I have been there.The signage is still up but it is very appar-ent that the business has been closed forsome time now. I even tried calling thenumber on the board but it simply goes tovoicemail,” he says.

Although his belongings were insuredthis too will have a financial impact onBadenhorst.

“The assessor came to have a look andshe said that the damages were clearly theresult of intended abuse or gross negli-gence. It is not a case of just a cracked lamp-

shade here and a dent there. She said they couldpay out, but that will increase my premium.”

He said AA Movers & Storage says the reasonwhy some of his belongings went missing is be-cause some of the stickers which they them-selves use to inventory the items, came loose.

“From what we have assessed/seen is (sic)not as serious as what Mr Badenhorst is mak-ing it to be,” she said. She added that shecould not give any further comment “as weare consulting with our attorneys”.

Those who voluntarily sacrifice theirtime for the safety of others are shining ex-amples of everything that is right in theworld. Human beings are social creatures– we need each other when faced withgreat danger. Presently, no danger is moreimminent than theuncompromising crim-inal.

So why the bad attendance of Communi-ty Policing Forum meetings? Some willask what the point is of going to a meetingwhere people discuss crime? These peopledon’t see the bigger picture: CPF meetingsare not just a discussion – they constitutea war room.

Ifwe stand together,wecanconquer thisevil. The battle lines have been drawn andvictory is assured, but Tom wants to sleep,Dick wants to braai and Harry wants towatch television.

But it is up to us. Attend your local CPFmeeting and join your neighbourhoodwatch programme. You can either sitback, complainand secretlyhope someoneelse does the work or you can stand up andbe counted. The time has come.

Outraged at thetrolley return feeWith regards to the article “Trolleys con-fiscated” (TygerBurger 7 March).

I manage one of the many trolley man-agement companies in the Western Capeand would just like to say that I appreciatethe help of law enforcement to collect thetrolleys from the so-called “trolley push-ers” but at the same time I am outragedthat we, the trolley management compa-ny, must now pay R1 140 per trolley if wewant them back! A new trolley does noteven cost that much.

The so-called “trolley pushers” are theones stealing the trolleys and now the trol-ley management companies must pay fortheir crime. It is the same as saying if aperson steals your TV you must pay thevalue of that TV to have it returned to you.

I know there isa lot of crime in South Africa, but I’m surea similar system might work.

The word rehabilitate means to restore touseful life through education and therapyand discipline a state of order based uponsubmission to rules and authority.

In our present day society when a crim-inal is sentenced our institutions wherethey are detained immediately institutecompulsory rehabilitation processeswith theultimateaimto restore the crimi-nal to becoming a useful recharged law-abiding member of our respective com-munities.

In some of our homes and some learn-ing institutions we have numerous chil-dren who run amok and circles arounddiscipline guidelines and authority andthen we are left with our own bloodlinesor neighbour’s terrorising us on thehome-front and our educators within theperimeter of school fences.

At this stage in our desperate plans andmethods available to get our children offthe broad road of destruction and onto thenarrow road of hope we turn to institu-tions and experts who we hope and praywill rehabilitate and restore our childrento the law-abiding and normal people weonce knew.

The sad and realistic statistic is if ouranti-social child refuses to be rehabilitat-ed then the reverse rehabilitation proce-dure is null and useless. A thirsty horsecan be led to a trough but a considerateand caring groom unfortunately cannotmake that horse drink of the water whichgives life.

Now take note my title to this letter istitled Reverse Rehabilitation and this ismy reason after talking and listening topeople sharing their experiences in theireveryday struggle to raise their childrenin the prescribed constitutional guide-

lines.Let’s reverse the problem back to the

home stage when we cannot as in the oldbad days apply homely or official physi-cal punishment to address undisciplinedtransgressions.

The child or our child becomes consti-tutionally aware of the rights they are en-titled to and we as law abiding citizensmust obey the law of the land or there arenegative legal consequences facing us.

The way we were brought up in the oldbad days with the threat of pain did notmake us all angels but compare now tothen and you make your own conclu-sions.

Then when our children run foul of ourlaws and society, now people we want torehabilitate them but then it is, in mostcases, too late.

In the media there are allegations ofmaybe changing the constitution andwhile planning this should we not advo-cate that we are allowed to bend our littletrees before they are due to non pruningallowed to grow out of control.

We must rehabilitate our childrenwhile still in the home in the method wethink and apply will work.

Many years ago a rich young man didthe ultimate thrill – he as a single parentchild wanted to feel how it was to take alife and this he did.

When his mother visited him in deathrow to say her goodbyes he bit her hardwith meaning on her cheek it was his fi-nal goodbye kiss but his parting wordswere: “It is because of you I am here to-day, you never ever disciplined me whenI was wrong.”

“Drunk driving is not worth it, and althoughI think that the general attitude has changed,it all changes from person to person,” saidKensington resident Taryn Van Schalkwyk.

“I don’t think that people take drunk drivingseriously enough, and I feel that more thanone drink is too much when driving a vehicle,”said Table View resident Richard Coetzee.

“I deal with drunk drivers on a daily basis, andapart from causing trouble with petrol attendants and being rude, they are also dangerous. I don’t think that attitudes have changed in general,” said Du Noon resident ZenithMantanga.

After two years of meticulous planning,local metal band, Sindulgence, are al-most ready to release their debut album.

The Durbanville band is made up of Mullervan Niekerk on vocals, Byron Dinwoodie onbass andvocals,RyanEberlinonguitar,Rod-ney Dosson, also on guitar, and Michael Sny-man on drums.

Ryan explains that their name, Sindul-gence, is a play on words. “With us it is moresomething we are against,” he says, addingthat the name represents “the greed of theelite”.

Ryan points out that Byron’s lyrics are of-ten filled with social and political themes,while Byron shyly says: “But sometimesthey are just about men who live in cabins.”

“Our name is open to interpretation,” Ry-an states simply.

While the band plays metal, they don’t de-fine it any further than that.

“When we write, we don’t consider sub-genres,” Byron says.

He adds that if you had to compare themwith another band, they would probably beclosest to System of a Down.

“They pretty much do what they want,”Ryan says.

Their album, titled, Recollections, is duefor release in June.

“The themes around that are just as variedas the band’s name,” Ryan says.

When he joined the band in 2010, Byronsays they made a decision to put an albumout, no matter what. “To show people that wemade something and we are proud of it,” hesays.

Most of the album was recorded in lessthan a week, with a live, off the floor feel.

They worked with Dean Hammond, alsothe guitarist for Moment of Clarity, who re-corded, mixed and mastered the album.

Sindulgence have been working withEvent Horizons and are very busy withshows even before their album release.

On Friday they will be at Roar in Observa-tory and on Sunday they will be playing atBuckleys in Bellville.

Die Trans-Atlantiese rubber-boot-wedvaart van die Trans At-lantiese Bootvereniging (TABA)het die afgelope naweek vanafdie Olifantsriviermond na Melk-bosstrand plaasgevind.

Die groep van 28 rubberbootspan-ne het Donderdag 8 Maart inStrandfontein aan die Weskus by-mekaar gekom en het die tog oor423 km na Melkbosstrand aangepakin drie verskillende klasse.

Digte mis Vrydagoggend het diespanne gedwing om padlangs naLambertsbaai koers te kies. Natwee ure kon die deelnemers dietwee tydsnelbene na Elandsbaai enVeldrift via Dwarskersbos aandurf.

Saterdag is die wedvaart hervatin redelik gunstige omstandighede.Nadat die bote op Paternoster hulbrandstof aangevul het, is die ge-vaarlikste gedeelte van die kus om

Cape Columbine na Langebaan ge-trotseer. Met deinings van tussen4,5 en 6 meter het die NSRI al diedeelnemers tot by die strand byKlub Mykonos in Langebaan verge-sel. In die proses het twee deelne-ners hul bote in die branders omge-keer.

Die tydtoets-gedeelte oor ’n af-stand van 66km na Yzerfontein is ingunstige toestande afgelê.

Die Melkbosstrand-inwoner Ste-fan Lindeque, het die vinnigste tydnóg hier aangeteken toe hy die skofin net 51 minute en 18 sekondes vol-tooi het.

Sondagoggend moes die deelne-mers weer hul weg vind oor4 m-branders by die wegspring vanYzerfontein. Die toestande het egtergou gunstig gedraai en ’n opwin-dende finale skof na Melkbosstrandverseker.

Die Atlantic, soos die poging be-

kend staan, is tans die grootste en-kele NSRI-seereddingsoefeningwaar drie stasies saam diens doen.

Die P750-standaardklas is deurNickie Smit en Dewaldt Theron ge-wen, met Eben de Bot en GerhardtFernhoudt in die tweede plek enChristie Kriel en Marco Kriel der-de.

It might only be his first time around theblock but a young race car driver fol-lowed through on his goal to finally wina provincial championship.

The 18-year-old Nicholas Baines fromTable View was crowned champion of theMidas Clubmans Junior Championshiprecently after only his first year of maincircuit racing.TygerBurgerwrote about Baines (“For-

mula 1 will soon be calling”) in July lastyear.

At that stage he was already leading thejunior WP Championship for classes D,E and F. He was intent on not only main-taining his position but also to ultimatelywin the championship.

When the competition came to a closewith the final race at Killarney in Decem-ber, Baines already had a lead of morethan 30 points.

“This meant I could sit out the finalrace and still win the championship,” heexplains adding that this is the maximumamount of points a competitor can ac-quire on a race day.

The racing season stretches from Feb-ruary to December with eight of the nineraces counting towards the champion-ship standings.

In the nine races Baines achieved sev-en podium positions, five of them as thewinner.

Baines not only won the championshipoverall for classes D, E, and F but was alsoawarded the best newcomer award.

His points standing also saw him finishsecond overall for all racing classes, jun-iors and seniors (A, B and C).

This top performance also saw Motor-sport South Africa award him with hisWP colours.

It is huge achievement for the youngman who started racing at the age of five.

“I get tears in my eyes every time I talkabout it,” Baines’s father Guy said.

“We have been trying for 13 years towin a championship and for him toachieve it in his first year of full time rac-ing, is no small feat,” the father saidproudly.

‘No small feat’ for MidasClubmans Junior Champ

Nicolas Baines was crowned champion inthe Midas Clubmans Junior Championshiplast year, and hopes to defend his title thisseason.

The South African team have performedwell during the first Stand Up Paddle WorldChampionships that were held in Peru re-cently.

Among the paddlers that graced the podi-um was Table View waterwoman Brigettevan Aswegen.

“It was an awesome experience to be ableto translate our training into an achieve-ment in a international competition like theworld championships,” said van Aswegenwho came third in the women’s marathonevent, fourth in the technical race and waspart of the SA relay team that came third.

She says South Africa definitely has thetalent to compete internationally but needsmore experience in training and equipmentto contend with the top countries.

“We have been having a lot of fun doing

downwinds where we should have beentraining more in flatwind conditions overlonger distances. We are used to training forour specific conditions in Cape Town whichincludes a lot of wind,” she explained.

She says the lessons the local team havelearned in regards to issues like transport-ing boards overseas and dealing with cus-toms, have been invaluable.

“Talent wise we are on par with the restof the world, but when it comes to equipmentthey are light years ahead,” she said.

Ice hockey is much more than just guyssmashing each other into the boards.

Women also smash each other into theboards.

This statement is, of course made tongue-in-cheek, since it really is a complex sportwith tactics and skills intertwining fluidlywith force and determination.

The South African Women’s Ice HockeyTeam held their final practise session atGrandWest’s Ice Station recently before theyjetted off to compete in the World Ice HockeyChampionship in Korea.

Four of the women are from the northernsuburbs: Dalene Rhode (Ravensmead), Nico-la Roche (Table View), Samantha Jansen(Bothasig) and Simone van Wyk (Bellville).

This week (until 16 March), 20 of South Af-rican’s finest female ice hockey players willbe taking part in the 2012 IIHF Ice HockeyWomen’s World Championship Division IIGroup B.

They’ll be going head to head against someof the world’s top ice hockey teams from Bel-gium, Korea, Iceland, Poland and Spain.

Their manager, Wendy Horn, elaborates:“They play round robin and the one with themost points get promoted to the next divisionand the one ending at the bottom is relegated.

Last year we didn’t win a game, but oneteam pulled out, so no one was relegat-ed. We had a very young team, but thisyear we have more experience.”

To take skaters to the next levelmuch work has also been done on vari-ous “plays”, zone coverage and systemsto get them ready for the big days ahead.

Dalene (17) was the youngest member lastyear and has been playing ice hockeysince she was just eight years old.

According to Horn this sport is un-doubtedly growing. “There were about30 new ladies in Gauteng when lastthey only had 10!”

Most smaller sports in the countrystruggle to find sponsors, but if every-one who has the talent gets to the respec-tive ice-rinks and joins the burgeoning“masses” then this will also become athing of the past.

“You got to be tough – personality wiseand physically. Other important at-tributes include fitness, skating skills andhand-eye co-ordination.

“Get down to the ice rink, especially theyounger ones, and practise!” she says.

It is reasonably expensive to play, sincethe equipment is often imported.
