Registered voters in Ward 23 will havethe opportunity to choose a new coun-cillor on 17 September.

The previous ward councillor, MarissaJansen van Vuuren, was officially relievedof her duties on 11August after a demandingdisciplinary process.Democratic Alliance (DA) member of par-

liament Denise Robinson last week con-firmed that Jansen van Vuuren’s DA mem-bership has been terminated.As a result, the communities of Big Bay,

Blaauwbergstrand, Blouberg, Cape Farms,east of West Coast Road, west of R304, northof Sunningdale/Parklands built-up area,Melkbosstrand and parts of Table View willknowby the endof Septemberwho their new

councillor will be.Jansen van Vuuren was left with a bitter

taste in her mouth after her two-and-a-halfyears as ward councillor was brought to anabrupt halt.“I challenge anyone to find fault in Ward

23’s development of roads, beaches andparks,” said a dismayed Jansen vanVuuren.

Disciplinary processSeveralmisconduct charges were brought

against her, such as her not performing herduties and living up to her responsibilitiesto the party, and deliberately harming theparty and bringing it into disrepute.Provincial DAmediamanager Liza Albre-

cht said they cannot divulge details of a dis-ciplinary process, but she said every DApublic representative is subject to the par-ty’s federal constitution and code of conduct

for councillors.“The DA requires every public represent-

ative to honour the principles therein. Diso-beying them will necessarily lead to a disci-plinary process,” she said.Five days of hearings which sometimes

carried on into the night came to an unsatis-factory conclusion for the outgoing council-lor.“I registered 3 500 new people for the last

elections, which met my target. The 14 646people who voted were satisfied with me asa councillor.“I never had any trust related issues dur-

ing my lifetime and cannot believe the accu-sations to remove myself from office as theydid,” said Jansen van Vuuren..She claims the charges against her were

made by a few “connected individuals withtheir own agenda”.

FlawedShe describes the disciplinary process as

flawed and made a thinly-veiled threat thatshe is determined to inform the public of the“disturbing things” that occurred behindthe closed doors in this particular matter.Regardless of her objections, Jansen van

Vuuren will not be able to appeal and Ward23 will have a new representative.Melkbosstrand Ratepayers Association

chairperson Smokie la Grange says she can-not comment on Jansen van Vuuren’s dis-missal, since she hasn’t dealt extensivelywith the councillor.But La Grange said she is very excited to

see who will succeed Jansen van Vuuren.“A good councillor is worth gold,” says La

Two housebreaking suspects were arrestedlast week Monday while fleeing with stolengoods.

A Table View Neighbourhood Watch(TVNW) members spotted three suspectsfleeing several blocks away from the housein Flamingo Vlei which was broken into atabout 17:30, said watch spokesperson JamieAgenbag.

“One of our call signs was alerted to a bur-glary in progress. He then called in a descrip-tion of the suspects who were busy fleeingon foot, said Agenbag.

A member of the public walking his dogsgave chase when he saw the suspicious men,but the suspects jumped over a wall.

“Our call signs soon managed to find thesuspects on Blaauwberg Road where they,along with local security companies, wereable to detain them while the police were enroute. Two of the three suspects were caughtwith stolen goods from the house whichwere positively identified.”

4 Kids with Cancer giving a present to 17-year-oldRobynvanRooyen forherbirthdayon Saturday.The box with pink wrapping paper was

under the table when I arrived at Mugg &Bean inCanalWalk to interviewRobyn andtake a photo.“Right, beforewe startmaybewe can take

a photo of Robyn with her brand new lap-top,” I blurted out thoughtlessly.“It was supposed to be a surprise,” ex-

claimed Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer vol-unteer Elri Mienie.But Robyn’s eyes nonetheless lit up at the

sight of the box and lifted the mood at thetable.The remarkable girl from Atlantis

laughed wholeheartedly at the misunder-standing and everyone followed her lead.She meticulously opened her present de-spite my faux pas, while everyone lookedon.Robyn is a two-time cancer survivor who

has beat a disease that has flattened menfive times her size.It is clear this girl has something else

counting in her favour – a steely determi-nation to keep the people she loves happy.Her fight against death has seen her blos-

som into a radiant, wise young woman.“I would like to tell every cancer patient

out there that we shouldn’t be afraid of can-cer or think that it’s a death sentence. Godonly picks his strongest warriors to fighthis toughest battles, so I’m actually hon-oured to have had cancer! I get to be an in-spiration to other people out there who arefighting it right at this moment,” she saidconfidently.“It’s awesome to see the smiles onmypar-

ents’ faces. That’s my goal in life – to seethem smile.”It quickly becomes clear that her attitude

leaves a legion of smiles in her wake.So it is just right to do something for her

as well, which is why Cupcakes 4 Kids withCancer thought they should give Robyn achoice of three presents forher recent birth-day.“I asked for either a laptop, to go on a

shopping spree, or a piano,” she said.Robyn loves writing songs, and she has

even released a single on CD, which shehopes is the start to a career as a composer.“The song’s name is ‘Thank You’ and is

dedicated to all the people who have sup-ported me during my fight.”The song is also dedicated to Cupcakes 4

Kids with Cancer.“Without the support of everyone I don’t

think Iwould have been able to survive can-cer twice now,” she said.

The laptop will help the grade 11 girl tocatch up with her school work.She was in hospital for the year of 2012

during her first bout with bone cancer, inand out of hospital last year, and this yearshe fought the second battle.Robyn just finished her last chemo ses-

sion last week and is “on the road to recov-ery”. Elri says she is very happy to be partof an organisation that has helped Robyn.They also gave Robyn a R500 Canal Walk

gift voucher for her birthday.Cupcakes of Hope, which helps cancer pa-

tients of all ages, has a main fund-raisingevent on 27 September at 55 malls acrossSouth Africa.It has been billed as “the sweetest way to

save a life”.The funds raised so far havehelped over 250 patients by paying formedi-cal or day-to-day living expenses. Cupcakesof Hope has also donated to 15 other chari-ties.

also in the process of “recycling” their livesfor the better.This being the story of Rowan Anderson,

a youth entrepreneur from Bonteheuwelwho operates his business the head office inStikland in Bellville, and another branch inElsies River.Rowan says he’s been living in TableView

for the last 16 months but is firmly rootedin the humble foundations laid by his par-ents who started the business to turn wasteinto a meaningful enterprise.Social entrepreneurship has become their

credo, says Rowan.Besides the homeless people they employ

froma shelter, they also partnerwith clientslike the city, schools and walk-in clients.“We have been employing people from the

Elim Night Shelter in Elsies River for 14months, which has been a very successful

endeavour.“Wewanted to adda constant social empow-

erment factor to our business, which wouldset it apart fromanyotherwastemanagementor recycling business,” he says. “I saw the op-portunity with Elim Night Shelter.”Rowan says they employ at least six people

from the shelter.“The workers from the shelter get paid

weekly like any other employee and we werelooking for premises when we opened the El-sies River branch and wemade the shelter anoffer for a section of their premises, and theyagreed.”Others have also heard of Rowan’s recy-

cling plant.“We have walk-in ‘customers’ – we assume

they collect waste from various places, binsand so on,” he says.Their business is also a participant of the

Sanlam ASISA Enterprise Development Pro-gramme.Mom Lydia Anderson-Jardine, who co-

founded their businesswithdadAnthonyJar-dine, says their participation in this pro-gramme is “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”.

A man believed to be a “binscratcher”assaulted a school girl with her ownhockey stick last week Wednesday.The girl’s injuries were

fortunately not severe,but the psychologicaltrauma of being attackedwill take longer to heal.It is believed that the

mugger, who was seendigging around in a bin,stoleher cell phoneon thecorner of North andWood streets.In most suburbs this is

where the story wouldend, but not in TableView.The suspect couldn’t escape the sub-

urb, because the local neighbourhoodwatch is almost always one step aheadof criminals.The watch was notified after the inci-

dent and the girl gave a description of

what the suspect was wearing.Within minutes, the suspect was spot-

ted by a watch member and then arrest-ed by the local police after he was posi-tively identified.Watch spokesperson Jamie Agenbag

said the girl was on herway to school when theincident occurred.The victim apparently

took a short cut throughthe field behind ViewChurch.When the breaking sto-

ry was published on thewatch’s Facebook group,one person was so upsetthat he wrote: “I think he(the suspect) should at-tend the next hockey

practice. Let the team show him whathappens to someone who messes withone of their own.”At the time of publishing the watch’s

The Southern African Foundation for theConservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB)in Table View has recently constructed apenguin nursery.The nursery supplements the existing

Chick Rearing Unit opened in September2011. The extra capacity enables SANCCOBto separate the older penguin chicks fromthe very young chicks to ensure their needsare properly catered for in preparation forrelease back into the wild. The nursery has

also created the much needed additionalspace to cater for the increasing require-ment forwild abandoned eggs to be hatchedand chicks to be reared.The Chick Rearing Unit has also been up-

graded with critical care equipment to fa-cilitate rearing the sensitive new hatch-lings. The nursery became fully operation-al mid-July as the first 15 penguin chickswere admitted to the unit.By collaborating with SANParks and

CapeNature, penguin chicks and eggs arebrought into SANCCOB’s care throughoutthe year from the colonies. These chicksand eggs are admitted when their parentseither abandon them when undergoingtheir annual moult or when they have fall-en ill or become weak. Whenever there is a desperate dog tiedto a post or a starving stray wander-ing around, there is only one person

to call – Dr Dolittle.

So what do dogs tell her?“Just giveme love and stop hurtingme,”

she exclaims.Table View’s 52-year-old Cheryl-lyn Pot-

gieter (aka Dr Dolittle) can’t really speakto animals, but shecan certainly speakup for them.“They just want to

be accepted,” saysCheryl-lyn.This Table View

NeighbourhoodWatch volunteersometimes gets callsin the middle of thenight to respond to an animal in distress,but her warm bed is never keeps her fromrushing to the animal’s help.Just last week TygerBurger published a

photo of Daisy,whohad gonemissing nearKoeberg Reserve, and readers respondedin droves to point Potgieter in the right di-rection.The scared and highly-strung Daisy ran

away from her foster home and was spot-ted on the beach front near Melk-bosstrand.At the time of going to press, the dog had

not been captured, but she has apparentlybecome big news in Duynefontein.Daisy is just one of themany animals Dr

Dolittle has saved from the harsh injustic-es of the world.She, along with animal anti-cruelty

unit’s Inspector Luke Keyser and theSPCA, will not rest until every dog livesa dog’s life.“If it wasn’t for the neighbourhood

watch and all the people and organisationsthat help me then I would not be able todo this,” she says.Her list of “thank you’s” is almost as

long as the onewith all the animals on thatshe rescued.

When her phone rings she dreads the possi-bility that some animal has been tied up some-where or another might have been run over.But no matter what gruesome sight she

might be facing when she arrives, Potgieterperseveres.“I will handle the dogs

others think are too vi-cious. Just the other daythere was a Border Col-lie in a squatter campthat bit a vagrant. Thedog was apparentlychained every day. Itwas put down the otherday,” she adds with dis-

gust.“I have no time for humans! There is noth-

ing I wouldn’t do for an animal. Poor animalsare put down for how humans treat them.”The hair raising stories she has to tell make

onewonderwhy she does it on a voluntary ba-

sis, but for every sad story there is a happyone.“There are so many with happy endings!

One time at 06:30 I heard on the neighbour-hoodwatch radio that a vagrant had just sto-len a Boerbull and an Alsatian. Boy oh boy!I jumped out of bed and was in the middleof the road a few minutes later. I caught theguy! The Alsatian had a skin problem, so wetook her to a vet.“When the owner came to pick up the dogs

I said that we do have a foster home for thesick Alsatian if he doesn’t want it anymore.He surrendered the dog and today he is ashappy as can be! You should see that dog to-day, oh, he is so beautiful,” she says passion-ately.Potgieter has seven of her own dogs and

erate injuries when she was hit by a vehi-cle on Boy de Goede Road in Table View.ER24 paramedics assessed the elderlywoman,who lay on the tarmac, anddiscov-ered that she injured her head when thevehicle hit her. There are only a few tickets left for the CapeTown Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival wherelocalsNukaandWaynePauli are set to sharethe stage.

The two will join an impressive list of col-laborators in this sixth instalment of the fes-tival at the Baxter Theatre on Saturday 30August.

Nuka,whogoes by thenameNadiaKrugerwhen she’s not on stage, is also the frontwoman for the indie bandNukaand theFire.

She describes her music as raw, acousticfolk, but asserts her tastes extend beyondfolk.

“I love jazz and blues, and some pop.”When she performs solo, Nuka says listen-

ers can expect an honest performance with“no frills or fuss”.

Nuka and the Fire, plus a new drummer,are working on a full length album, whileNuka is also working on a solo acoustic al-bum, “a very plain Jane, kind of ‘NorahJonesey’ vibe”.

She hopes to release both early next year,but isn’t keen on the idea of a deadline. Alsoon the cards forNuka is a possiblemusic vid-eo and more press write ups, along with atour in the pipeline.

Although he rarely gets to play acoustical-

ly nowadays, Wayne released his first folkalbum, Farewell Station Rd, in 1999. He’s al-so a founding member of the well-knownCape Town blues act, Boulevard Blues.

He left the band after two and a half years,heading to the UK with another band, wherehe started The Stremes with BenjaminPeacefull and Adam Shapiro in London in2006. They are also working on an album,their second.

About their collaboration process, Waynesays: “You’ve gotta do it on the fly.” Nukajokes they have been jamming some songstogether over a two litre bottle of Stoney,some Doritos and a pack of cigarettes on thefarm where she stays.

Western Province members of the Na-tional Archery in the Schools Pro-gramme (NASP) team were selected

for the team who represented South Africain the recent World and All Star Champion-ships in Madison, Wisconson, USA.

South Africa competed against 2500 arch-ers from around the world last month.

This was the first year that seven of thesixteen members of the NASP SA nationalteam came from the Western Province.School archery in the Western Province issurely on the path to success.

Archers Jeandre Putter (Kraaifontein),Annelize Rabie (Joostenbergvlakte), AnjeTait (Kraaifontein), Courtney Beavers (Dur-banville), Heidi-Mari Lues (Durbanville),Gerdus Visser (Joostenbergvlakte), andKristie Goslett (Brackenfell) competed inthe World Championships.

South Africa came second after the USA,and amazed all by beating Canada despite

the fact that the Canadians are ranked high-er than South Africa.

The impact the SA team made on and offthe shooting range led to national team man-ager Charl Rabie being congratulated byother team managers.

Candadian team manager Hal Ziprick alsoinvited Charl to send a Western Provinceteam to their State Championships in Marchnext year.

While this invitation is a major accoladethere is the common problem with so manysports: funding will be a big obstacle to send-ing the team over to Canada.

Next year the World Championships willbe held in Tennessee, USA. Local archers areshooting great scores in the regional cham-pionships, and these archers will qualify forthe national team.

The Cape’s biggest youth soccer tourna-ment kicks-off at Stephan Reagan SportsComplex in Mitchell’s Plain on Friday.

The Engen Knockout Challenge, a three-day football extravaganza of which Peo-ple’s Post is the print media sponsor, willbe held tomorrow (Friday 22 August), Sat-urday and Sunday.

The 11th edition of the competition willsee u-17 teams battle for the cash prize,bragging rights and other prizes.

And for the first time, the tournament

winners will compete on a national stagewhen they take on the winners of the otherregional Engen Knockout Challenge tour-naments in Soweto in October.

The 16 competing teams have alreadybeen drawn into four groups for the round-robin stage which takes place tomorrowand until lunchtime on Saturday.

Group A features defending champsAjax Cape Town, All Stars Youth SoccerDevelopment, Hellenic FC and Old MutualAcademy.

CYCLING: SA TOP TRACK CYCLISTS PEDAL FOR HONOURS AT VELODROME

WP hopes ride highSouth Africa’s best track cyclists will

be competing in the SA OmniumChampionships as well as the inter-

provincial Lights by Linea President’s Cupand Western Cape Grand Prix meetingsfrom 22-24 August at the Bellville Velo-drome.

The new SA Omnium champion will bedecided after participation in variousevents held on Friday from 09:00 to 18:00and Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00.

All the riders who represented SA at theCommonwealth Games in Glasgow will becompeting for the title and spectators willbe able to watch Nolan Hoffman, silvermedallist at the World Championships lastyear and holder of numerous SA titles, inaction against fellow national riders likeKellan Gouveris, Theuns van der Bank,Morne van Niekerk, Evan Carstens andOupa Maluleke.

Other talented riders will definitely havetheir sights on the title to prove they toodeserve a call-up to the national squad.

Lights by Linea will be sponsoring the in-terprovincial meeting on Sunday 24 Augustfrom 09:00 to 12:00 and the Western CapeGrand Prix which will follow until 18:00.There is no better competition than whenteams from WP, Boland/SWD, EasternCape, Kwazulu-Natal, Gauteng and FreeState compete to be crowned the top prov-ince in track cycling. Some of the best pro-fessional teams, like Abantu (KZN), Boni-tas (Gauteng) and Giant (Boland), will berepresenting their respective provincesand taking part in the Omnium Champion-ships as well.

Interprovincial meetings make for ex-tremely exciting riding as cyclists alwaysgo all out to prove where the strength oftrack cycling in SA resides. Spectators willalso be entertained by the cream of the crop

in track sprinting, and with WP known asSA’s sprinting hub, locals should not be dis-appointed. WP will be fielding the SA elitesprint team of Jean Smith, Kyle Borchesand Matthew de Freitas, while the SA jun-ior champion Eugene Soule (who will becompeting in the coming World YouthTrack Cycling Championships) will beamong the talented youngsters struttingtheir stuff. Multiple lady track championMaroesjka Matthee will be proving sheshould also have been selected to competein Glasgow.

At the interprovincial meeting teamsconsisting of men and women will be com-peting in the team sprint, team pursuit aswell as the extremely exciting 1 500 m anddevil takes the hindmost (in which the lastrider over the line falls out with the last two

riders sprinting for the title).This will be the first of three interprovin-

cial meetings to decide the home of themuch-sought after President’s Cup. Theveterans will also be taking part in the firstinterprovincial specifically for veterans.

The riders will be sure to save their bestfor last in Sunday’s Grand Prix meeting.

Since WP boasts many current andformer national champions, local specta-tors can be assured of great excitement andentertainment when the rest of the countryflocks down to the Cape to take them on inthe only Velodrome on the Afri an conti-nent.
