South African audiences are lining upto see an inspirational new South Afri-can movie that is locally produced and

directed.Frans Cronjé from Brackenfell, who pro-

duced the hit movie Faith Like Potatoes, andCobus van den Berg from Eversdal, produc-er of the equally successfulKlein Karoo, teamed up toproduce the rousing newmovie, Born To Win.

And word on the streethas it that if you liked FaithLike Patatoes, you will loveBorn To Win.

This time Cronjé has satin the director’s chair,while van den Berg was pro-ducer.

Based on the true story ofLeon Terblanche, Born ToWin confronts the question, “Where isGod?”.

“It sets the protagonist on a journey wherehe discovers that he has never been alonethrough all the hurt and brokenness of hispast. He learns that no matter how brokenyou are, God is always our only living hope,”says Cronjé.

“‘Born To Win’ shows how God turns thehurt, frustration and emptiness of a man in-to hope, faith and victory to inspire manyto be the winners they were born to be.”

The movie was released in cinemasthroughout South Africa last Friday and isdoing really well at Tygervalley, CapeGateand Parow cinemas, says Cronjé.

The innovative pair have also secured anAmerican cinema release and will announcedetails soon.

Rising star Greg Kriek makes his first fea-ture film debut, playing the lead role of LeonTerblanche alongside leading actress LeonéPienaar, who plays Elmarie Terblanche.

This is Leone’s second lead role in a fea-ture film. Award-winning actors and ac-tresses such as Sylvia Mdunyelwa-Kobus,

Dorette Potgieter and An-rich Herbst are part of thetalented cast, together withGrace Sithole, Kwezi Kobus,Merlin Balie, Cobus Venter,Tim Theron, Leandie duRandt and the much lovedNadia Beukes.

“This extremely talentedcast delivers such an honestperformance, it brings tolife this true story so au-thentically,” says Cronjé.

Die ry gekleurde huisies herinner sterkaan die kleurvolle aantrekkamers opMuizenbergstrand en die eens vaal sta-

sieterrein lyk nou skielik mooi.Die informele handelaars wat vir jare on-

wettig langs die stasie handel gedryf het, isnou die trotse eienaars van hul eie “winkel-tjies”, danksy ’n opruimingsprojek van CarinBrynard, wyksraadslid.

Die netjiese staalhuisies met oopvou-toon-banke bied handelaars ’n veilige skuiling teendie elemente, terwyl dit terselfdertyd die om-gewing baie netjies laat vertoon – ver verwy-der van die destydse staal- en plastiekgehug-gies.

Yandiswe Mfeti en haar ma, Nosango, is nettwee van die straathandelaars wat bevoordeelword deur die projek. Hulle verkoop reeds 15jaar lank lekkergoed en vrugte by die stasie.

“Vir die eerste keer het ons nou skuiling indie winter en lekker koel skadu in die somer.Ons het ook meer plek om ons goedere veiliguit te stal,” het Yandiswe gesê.

EnergieBrynard, wat ook die voorsitter is van die

Stad Kaapstad se veiligheidsportefeulje, hethaar energie gedurende die laaste jaar op diegebied om die stasie toegespits.

“Met die vele probleme wat ek oor die afge-lope aantal jare ondervind by die WilliamDabbs-kant van Brackenfell-stasie ten opsigtevan haweloses wat daar slaap en onwettige in-formele handel, het ek besluit om sterk op diearea te fokus en dit ook te verfraai,” sê sy.

Volgens Brynard is die ses handelaars watdaar handel dryf, ook intussen gewettig om ditte doen en word daar van hulle verwag om dieareas rondom hul stalletjies netjies te hou. Syhet ook gevra vir gefokusde wetstoepassing indie area.

Brynard verduidelik die rede vir die aksie.“Vervalle areas lok allerhande anti-sosiale

gedrag en met die fokus op opknapping enverfraaiing van die area, word die ‘brokenwindows’-teorie hier geimplementeer,”verduidelik sy.

Sy sien ook uit na die komsvan die nuwe Brackenfell-sakestadsverbe-teringsdistrik (BID), wat op 1 Septemberafskop. “Ek glo dat die Brackenfell-sake-kern ’n baie welkome opbloei gaan beleefná die instelling van die BID.”

Sy doen ook ’n beroep op inwoners omnie direk vir hawelose mense te gee nie,selfs nie vir kinders nie. “Baie van die men-se wat op die straat slaap, insluitende kin-

ders, is verslaaf aan óf drank óf dwelms ófalbei. Navorsing bewys dat tot soveel as 80 %van die mense wat hulle na die straat wend,doen so omdat hulle verslaaf is aan iets, ennie omdat hul waarlik sonder heenkome isnie,” sê sy.

GewoontesMeestal kan familielede nie meer die ver-

slaafde se gewoontes hanteer nie en sit danhul voet neer. Die verslaafdes wyk dan eer-der uit na die strate as om te rehabiliteer.

“Deur kos en komberse aan te dra, moedigons die haweloses aan om op die straat te bly,eerder as om hulp te gaan soek by die veleorganisasies wat hulle beywer om hawelosemense weer te integreer in die samelewing.”

Sy versoek inwoners wat wil gee om eer-der hul skenkings te maak aan organisasiessoos Teahmo, wat gemoeid is met sosiale enmaatskaplike sake en met die opheffing vanhawelose mense in Brackenfell.

“Dié organisasies doen goeie werk en pro-beer geleenthede skep vir mense om weerdie werkersmark te betree.”

Sedert TygerBurger verlede week dienuusberig geplaas het oor die man envrou wat hul klein seuntjie inspan om

Verskeie inwoners van Brackenfell,Kraaifontein, Bellville, Parow en sover asDelft, almal slagoffers van die gesin, het dieBrackenfell-polisiekantoor, sowel as Tyger-Burger se kantore, geskakel.

Ao. Erica Crous, woordvoerder van dieBrackenfell-polisie, is oorbluf met die reak-sie en bedank die gemeenskap vir hul same-werking.

“Ons kan nou bevestig dat die mense inander gebiede van die noordelike voorstedeaktief is en dat ons die saak as prioriteit on-dersoek,” sê sy.

SlagofferVolgens Crous is die klein seuntjie wat so

vyf of ses geskat word, en saam steel, ook’n slagoffer van misdaad, omdat hy deur syouers misbruik word.

“Hy is nie op die ouderdom toereken-ningsvatbaar nie en ’n minderjarige. Sy ou-ers, as dit wel sy ouers is, oortree die Kin-derwet deur hom só te misbruik. Indien ditnie sy ouers is nie, kan daar dalk sprakewees van mensehandel en kinderarbeid,” sêsy en voeg by dat dit van kardinale belangis vir dié kind dat sy ouers – die oortreders– opgespoor word.

Die Brackenfell-polisie het die gesin by-kans vasgetrek toe hulle verlede week in dieCapeGate-sentrum gewaar is deur ’n Tyger-Burger-leser, wat die sentrum en polisie inkennis gestel het.

“Die sentrum se wagte het hulle agterna-gesit, terwyl ons polisiemanne op pad was,maar het hulle verloor. Die polisie het diegebied gefynkam, maar kon hulle nie op-

spoor nie,” vertel sy.In ’n geval twee weke vroeër het die gesin

glo op ’n huis in Shellypark, Bellville toege-slaan. Die huiseienaar, Elhoise Hugo, ver-tel: “Terwyl ons besig was om ons huis aankopers te wys, het die ma en seuntjie by dieerf ingestap en my kom vra of die seuntjiegou die toilet kan gebruik,” vertel sy.

Honde“Ek het hom ingelaat, maar na ’n rukkie

besef hy vat baie lank. My honde het ookvreeslik begin blaf en ek het die ma gevraom hom te gaan haal.”

In die stadium het Elhoise besef haar hor-losie was in haar badkamer se wasbak enhet sy dadelik soontoe geloop om dit te gaan

haal. Hier het sy die ma teëgekom waar sywater by die wasbak gedrink het.

“My horlosie was nog daar, maar ek hetdie twee gevra om my huis te verlaat Ek heteers ’n ruk later opgemerk dat daar water-druppels op die grond naby my juweelbok-sie lê,” sê sy verslae.

Elhoise was geskok toe sy besef dat al haarringe uit haar juweelboks gesteel is. “Ek hetdadelik die saak by die Bellville- polisiekan-toor aangemeld. Ek is woedend! Baie van dieringe, soos die een wat ek op my 16de ver-jaardag gekry het, is sentimenteel vir my ensal nooit vervang kan word nie,” sê sy.

In ’n ander voorval het die drietal na be-wering ’n skootrekenaar uit ’n kerkkantoorin Parow gesteel.

’n Bende van vyf gewapende mans hetverlede Dinsdag omstreeks 10:00 op dieMTN-winkel in die Brackenfell-sentrumtoegeslaan.

“Hulle het die vier werknemers na die ag-terkant van die winkel toe gevat waar hullefone geëis het. Daarna is die werknemers sehande vasgebind,” vertel ao. Erica Crousvan die Brackenfell-polisiekantoor.

Three learners from Brackenfell HighSchool won the 2014 Aqualibrium SAICE-RandWater Schools Competition held in Jo-hannesburg recently, hands down.With only 35 penalty points conceded, An-

gelique le Roux, Aldo Siegling and Bennievan Eeden were the undisputed champions.This competition strengthens initiatives

to encourage learners to take mathematicsand science to enable them to choose one ofthe top priority scarce skills on govern-ment’s list such as civil and other engineer-ing disciplines, as well as water-related ca-reers.“The competition illustrates the realities,

municipalities face in curbing water losses,says SAICE-Rand Water spokespersonMarie Ashpole.This year thewinners of the regional com-

petitions gathered in Johannesburg to battlethe local winners for top honours.Water distribution systems are important

to supply safe and clean drinking water topeople.“The teams were tasked to design a model

water distribution network to distributethree litres of water equally between threepoints on the grid using two different diame-ter pipes and connection pieces. They werethen judged on how well they executed thetask – working on a penalty points system.“They had a period of about an hour in

which to design, construct and operate theirnetwork,” Ashpole explained.Learners were made aware of the intrica-

cies involved in the design of water distribu-tion networks and the actual water deliveryto households.

After heading one of South Africa’s mostproductive theatre companies formore than18 years, Artscape CEO, Michael Maas, hasdecided to retire.Maas (58), who lives in Plattekloof, will be

stepping down in October.Maas joined the institution in 1996 when

it was still known as the Cape PerformingArts Board (Capab).He was responsible for driving the trans-

formation process of the company into amodern, vibrant, multi-cultural institution.“I have achieved the goals that I had set

out for the growth of Artscape,” Maas says,“the institution is now on a strong footingand it is time to introduce new blood to takeArtscape forward.”At the end of 2012, Artscape announced a

multi-million rand plan to revamp the 43-year-old complex into a comprehensive cul-tural facility with a distinctive African per-sona.During his tenure, Maas oversaw the un-

bundling of an organisation with more than800 personnel into an efficient streamlinedcompanywith less than 100 permanent staff.Artscapehas becomeknown for thevaried

arts productions encompassing all genres,which make up its annual performing artsprogramme. Parentsneed toquell kids’drinkingA new responsible drinking campaignaimed at discouraging underage youthsfrom drinking alcohol has been launchedby The South African Breweries (SAB).

SAB’s message to South African adults isquite clear: It is not okay for underageyouths to drink alcohol under any circum-stances. Even small amounts of liquor cancause physical and psychological damageto their developing bodies.

SAB believes that there should be nodrinking for those who are under the ageof 18, a report released by the companystates.

The 18+ campaign is a call to action foradults to be role models in the fight againstunderage drinking, which SAB believes ithas a responsibility to lead.

Research by the University of South Afri-ca (Unisa) shows that a percentage of teen-agers in the average South African homehas at some stage experimented with alco-hol, but the vast majority of parents believetheir kids do not drink.

According to the 2012 Unisa Youth Re-search Unit Substance Abuse Survey, sta-tistics show that:

V Around 15% of boys and 8% of girls saidthey’d had their first drink before age 13;and

V People who begin drinking before theage of 15 are four times more likely to be-come alcohol dependent than those whohave their first drink at age 20 or older.

UK think tank Demos has conducted re-search which shows that parenting style isone of the most important and statisticallyreliable influences on whether a child willdrink responsibly in adolescence and inadulthood.

International research on youth bingedrinking has shown that the behaviour andinfluence of parents can have a significantimpact on underage drinking, and the im-portance of educating parents.

SAB will use the 18+ campaign to driveeducation among adults on the topic of un-derage drinking and its dangers and conse-quences. It seeks to encourage adults totake another look at some of their beliefsand practices.

SAB encourages parents to have openand honest conversations about alcoholwith their children. The key message aspart of the 18+ campaign is that parentsmust speak to our youth about alcohol be-fore alcohol speaks to them.

Key messaging highlighted in the cam-paign includes that it is not okay to giveteenagers a drink to “control” their con-sumption habits, nor is it okay for a childunder the age of 18 to be sent to buy alcoholfor an adult. Parents and other adultsshould also not be taking children withthem to a pub or tavern and it is not okayto do nothing when teenagers are seendrinking.

18+ is calling on all adult South Africansto support the campaign and get involvedin the fight against underage drinking.

Pledges can be made on www.sabsto-ries.co.za where there is also additional in-formation on the issue of underage drink-ing, conversation guides to help parentswith this difficult topic, and suggestions onadditional ways to get involved.

Children need to be educated about alcohol,not given a drink.

There are only a few tickets left for theCape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Fes-tival where locals Nuka and Wayne

Pauli are set to share the stage.The two will join an impressive list of col-

laborators in this sixth instalment of the fes-tivalwhich takes place at theBaxterTheatreon Saturday 30 August.

Nuka, who goes under the name NadiaKruger when she isn’t on stage, is also thefront woman for the indie band, Nuka andthe Fire.

She describes her music as raw, acousticfolk, but asserts that her tastes extend be-yond folk.

“I love jazz and blues, and some pop.”When she performs solo, Nuka says listen-

ers can expect an honest performance with“no frills or fuss”.

Nuka and the Fire, with the addition of anew drummer, are busy working on a fulllength album, while Nuka is also working ona solo acoustic album, “a very plain Jane,kind of ‘Norah Jonesey’ vibe”.She hopes torelease both early next year, but isn’t keenon the idea of a deadline. Also on the cardsfor Nuka is a possible music video and morepress write ups along with a tour in the pipe-line.

Keep goingAlthough he rarely gets to play acoustical-

ly nowadays, Wayne released his first folkalbum, Farewell Station Rd, in 1999. He’s al-

so a founding member of the well-knownCape Town blues act, Boulevard Blues.Heleft the band after two and a half years, head-ing to the UK with another band, where hestarted the rock band The Stremes with Ben-jamin Peacefull and Adam Shapiro (AtomShape) in London in 2006.

Wayne says they are in a similar boat toNuka and the Fire, in that they are alsoworking on an album, their second.“Musicis not an easy thing. Plans change, but theidea is to just keep going,” he says. The twoaren’t giving too much about their collabo-ration process away, but Wayne says:“You’ve gotta do it on the fly.”

Nuka jokes that the two have been jam-ming some songs together over a two litrebottle of Stoney, some Doritos and a pack ofcigarettes on the farm where she stays.

die internet nie, maar wat met ons kindersse slaap gebeur.”

Só sê Hugo Theron, ’n kindersielkundi-ge, in die laaste van ’n reeks van tweepraatjies oor tieners, tegnologie en die uit-dagings van ouerskap in die NG Kerk Dur-banville.

Theron is besig met sy doktorsgraad oordie invloed van hedendaagse tegnologie opkinders se ervarings en watter sielkundigerisiko’s en voordele dit inhou.

“Dis ’n enorme probleem. In Japan wasdie gemiddelde slaap by tieners die afgelo-pe vyf jaar maar 4 tot 5 ure per nag. In Ame-rika en China is dit net so ’n groot pro-bleem.

“Ook in Suid-Afrika was dit in elke enke-le studie wat gedoen is, die grootste pro-bleem.

“Skerms gee blou lig af, wat die internekorteks stimuleer en jou uit die slaap hou.Dieselfde geld vir ’n TV-skerm.

Selfoon“Dis die grootste rede hoekom tieners

minder slaap kry. As hulle slaap, word hulslaap ook onderbreek as die selfoon af-gaan.”

Volgens Theron is daar studies wat be-vind het dat selfs ’n afgeskakelde selfoonop die bedkassie slaapgolwe affekteer– veral die REM (Rapid Eye Movement)-fa-se van slaap.

“Dit het ’n effek op konsentrasie, emosio-nele regulering, akademiese vermoëns ensosiale interaksie.

“Dit maak kinders meer vatbaar vir

angs- en gemoedsteurings. Streshormonestyg, asook die afskeiding van kortisol enadrenalien. Jy sit gewig aan en dit lei totsiektes soos diabetes 2. Dit het ’n legio na-dele,” het hy gesê.

In agt jaar het tegnologieons wêreld baie verander,het Theron gesê. “Die vori-ge geslag dink dis ’n voorregom ’n selfoon te hê. Maar ditis só deel van die volgendegeslag, dat hulle voel dit isdeel van hulself – vandaardie ontsettende emosies watontlok word as dit wegge-neem word.

“Dit hou verband met dietiener se ontwikkeling van ’n eie identiteiten wat hy met tegnologie kan doen.

“Ons geslag kan onderskei tussen dieregte wêreld en kuberwêreld. Maar die vol-gende geslag tref geen onderskeid.”

Ontwikkeling“’n Groot gedeelte van ons kinders se so-

siale-emosionele en interpersoonlike ont-wikkeling geskied op die internet. Dit het’n effek op die neurobiologiese en psigo-so-siale kwesbaarheid van kinders.

“As kinders tieners raak, gaan hul brei-ne ’n stap terug, volgens ’n artikel oor ’nstudie in National Geographic.

“Baie van die dinge soos abstrakte denkeen empatie moet ontwikkel tydens adole-sensie. Die pre-frontale korteks van vroeëtieners se breine is nog nie ten volle ont-wikkel nie; daarom is hulle vatbaar vir dieinvloed van tegnologie,” het hy gesê.

“Hulle het ’n drang na sosiale interaksiemet hul vriende, en wil net heeltyd by hulvriende wees, maar het nie die remme omte weet wanneer om op te hou nie,” het hygesê.

“Geen sosiale media-blootstelling is sleg-ter as dié wat dit matig doen, maar dié watdit te veel doen, vaar slegter as die wat ditglad nie doen nie. Dit gaan oor hoeveel jy

dit gebruik, het hy gesê.Een van die nadele is dat

dit verslawend is. Skande-rings het gewys dat ’n ge-deelte van die brein wat virjou sê jy het ’n goeie job ge-doen en dopamien laat af-skei, geaktiveer word as ’ntiener met tegnologie om-gaan, sê hy.

“Die enkele sterkste ver-sterkingsmeganisme in diebrein is die vrees dat jy sal

uitmis, in Engels bekend as ‘fear of missingout’,” sê hy.

Tegnologie het ook ’n definitiewe impakop taalgebruik en die gehalte en diversiteitvan woordeskat.

In ’n verslag einde 2012 is bevind diewoordeskat van tieners in Engeland verge-lyk met dié van ’n 6-jarige en is hulle as ge-volg daarvan nie employable nie.

“Ons druk ons beleweniswêreld uit intaal, ook ons emosies. Dit het ’n implikasievir verhoudings. Jy kan nie vir alles sê ie-mand maak jou kwaad nie, want daar issubtiele nuanses in taalgebruik. Die effekvan die verval van taalgebruik is baie be-langrik.”

van tegnologie af te skakel, maar ons kandie hoeveelheid tyd bestuur wat ons daar-aan spandeer.

“Reg oor die wêreld toon studies dat diepositiewe aspekte van tegnologie negatiefraak na ’n sekere aantal ure skermtyd perdag.

“Ná vier ure raak dit sleg vir jou.”Maar in Korea is die gemiddele tyd per

dag 10 ure, in Amerika 9 ure en in Europa6 tot 8 ure per dag.

“Ons is in die moeilikheid”.“Maak seker jou tieners kry genoeg

slaap; hou tegnologie-vrye tye en verduide-lik die permanensie van jou digitale foot-print aan jou tieners.

Western Province members of the Na-tional Archery in the Schools Pro-gramme (NASP) team were selected

for the team who represented South Africain the recent World and All Star Champion-ships in Madison, Wisconson, USA.

South Africa competed against 2500 arch-ers from around the world last month.

This was the first year that seven of thesixteen members of the NASP SA nationalteam came from the Western Province.School archery in the Western Province issurely on the path to success.

Archers Jeandre Putter (Kraaifontein),Annelize Rabie (Joostenbergvlakte), AnjeTait (Kraaifontein), Courtney Beavers (Dur-banville), Heidi-Mari Lues (Durbanville),Gerdus Visser (Joostenbergvlakte), andKristie Goslett (Brackenfell) competed inthe World Championships.

South Africa came second after the USA,and amazed all by beating Canada despite

the fact that the Canadians are ranked high-er than South Africa.

The impact the SA team made on and offthe shooting range led to national team man-ager Charl Rabie being congratulated byother team managers.

Candadian team manager Hal Ziprick alsoinvited Charl to send a Western Provinceteam to their State Championships in Marchnext year.

While this invitation is a major accoladethere is the common problem with so manysports: funding will be a big obstacle to send-ing the team over to Canada.

Next year the World Championships willbe held in Tennessee, USA. Local archers areshooting great scores in the regional cham-pionships, and these archers will qualify forthe national team.

The Cape’s biggest youth soccer tourna-ment kicks-off at Stephan Reagan SportsComplex in Mitchell’s Plain on Friday.

The Engen Knockout Challenge, a three-day football extravaganza of which Peo-ple’s Post is the print media sponsor, willbe held tomorrow (Friday 22 August), Sat-urday and Sunday.

The 11th edition of the competition willsee u-17 teams battle for the cash prize,bragging rights and other prizes.

And for the first time, the tournament

winners will compete on a national stagewhen they take on the winners of the otherregional Engen Knockout Challenge tour-naments in Soweto in October.

The 16 competing teams have alreadybeen drawn into four groups for the round-robin stage which takes place tomorrowand until lunchtime on Saturday.

CYCLING: SA TRACK CYCLISTS VIE TO TAKE HOME THE PRESIDENT’S CUP

South Africa’s best track cyclists will becompeting in the SA Omnium Cham-pionships as well as the interprovin-

cial Lights by Linea President’s Cup andWestern Cape Grand Prix meetings from 22-24 August at the Bellville Velodrome.ThenewSAOmniumchampionwill be de-cided after participation in various eventsheld on Friday from 09:00 to 18:00 and Satur-day from 09:00 to 15:00.All the riders who represented SA at theCommonwealth Games in Glasgow will becompeting for the title and spectatorswill beable to watch Nolan Hoffman, silver medal-list at the World Championships last yearand holder of numerous SA titles, in actionagainst fellow national riders like KellanGouveris, Theuns van der Bank, Morne vanNiekerk,EvanCarstens andOupaMaluleke.Other talented riders will definitely havetheir sights on the title to prove they too de-serve a call-up to the national squad.Lights by Linea will be sponsoring the in-terprovincial meeting on Sunday 24 Augustfrom 09:00 to 12:00 and the Western CapeGrand Prix which will follow until 18:00.There is no better competition than whenteams fromWP,Boland/SWD,EasternCape,Kwazulu-Natal, Gauteng and Free Statecompete to be crowned the top province intrack cycling. Some of the best professionalteams, like Abantu (KZN), Bonitas (Gau-teng) and Giant (Boland), will be represent-ing their respective provinces and takingpart in the OmniumChampionships as well.

Interprovincial meetings make for ex-tremely exciting riding as cyclists always goall out to prove where the strength of trackcycling in SA resides. Spectators will also beentertained by the creamof the crop in tracksprinting, and with WP known as SA’ssprinting hub, locals should not be disap-pointed. WP will be fielding the SA elitesprint teamof Jean Smith, Kyle Borches andMatthew de Freitas, while the SA juniorchampion Eugene Soule (who will be com-

peting in the coming World Youth TrackCycling Championships) will be amongthe talented youngsters strutting theirstuff. Multiple lady track championMaroesjka Matthee will be proving sheshould also have been selected to competein Glasgow.This will be the first of three interpro-vincial meetings to decide the home of themuch-sought after President’s Cup.
