Amalicious act of bullying, involving ayoung boy’s bedding being smearedwith human faeces during school
camp, has left his family shocked, while theschool remains unforthcoming. The 12-year-old learner from Bastion Pri-
mary School in Brackenfell was thrilled togo on his first ever school camp to Jonkers-hoek, but was far from prepared for whathappened next. The boy’s aunt told TygerBurger last
week that her nephew was allegedly being-verbally targeted by bullies during the firstnight of the camp, which took place between10 and 12 September, resulting in the tea-chers moving him to another bungalow.
Smearing campaignOn the second night, while the boy was
asleep, the aunt said someone sneaked up tohim and smeared human faeces underneathhim.“Hewas left to roll around in it for the rest
of the night”, she added.“When he woke up the next morning he
was ridiculed by all the other kids for havingan ‘accident’ even though hewas sleeping ina sleeping bag and the faeces was smearedon the outside of the sleeping bag,” she said. The incident was apparently not reported
to the boy’smother and it was only when hisaunt arrived at the camp to pick him up thenext morning that she realised somethingwas wrong.“As Iwalked toward himwhere hewas sit-
ting among the children in the campsite, heonly looked down and walked away.“I noticed that he looked very sad and he
didn’t even look atme or greetme,” she said. The boy’s teacher then approached the
boy’s aunt and asked her whether he hadever defecated in bed.“I assured her that this was not the case
as he was 12-years-old.“She then told me to my utter shock and
horror that there was an incident in one ofthe bungalows where a child had smearedmy nephew’s bedding with human faeces,”she said.
School promises to follow upAccording to the boy’s aunt, the same tea-
cher acknowledged the fact that she believedtheboywhenhe toldher thathehadnot defe-cated in his bed.“She also informedme that she was aware
of the bullying as some of the boys came toher and warned her that my nephewwas be-ing bullied,” the aunt said, adding that theteacher had expressed her shock at the inci-dent.The T-shirt and shorts used to rub the fae-
ces on the boy did not belong to him andwasdiscarded after the incident. The bedding was placed in black bags and
sent home with the boy.Only after speaking to her sister, was the
boy’s mother informed of the incident. She was apparantly told by the principal
on the same day that the matter will not beleft unresolved.During a meeting with the class teacher
and principal the followingWednesday, Bas-tion Primary School principal Chris Ek-steen advised the family that theywill inves-tigate the incident and asked to be given un-til Friday 19 September to resolve the issue.“Friday had come and gone, and still we
were not contacted by the school, who bythat time has also still not arranged for theschool’s social worker to counsel my son,”said the mom.

TygerBurger learned from the boy’s motherthat he was only scheduled to consult theschool’s social worker on Thursday 25 Sep-tember, almost twoweeks after the incident.“In the meantime he has been very with-
drawn and even aggressive at times. He isnot himself and we are worried about howthis incident has affected him,” she says.During their meeting with the school, the
boy’s family was allegedly informed by theprincipal that the incident was not anexample of bullying but just a prank.“We were stunned by this reply,” says the
boy’s aunt. “And even more stunned whenthey later said they believed that anotherchild might have had an ‘accident’ in bedand, being embarrassed, tried to hide it byblaming it on my nephew,” said the boy’saunt.“They said that theyhadquestionedall the
boys individually but nobody had owned up,yet they could not answer any of our questi-ons pertaining to the circumstances leadingup to the incident.”Hismother said: “Whywas I not contacted
directly after the incident?“Why was my son removed from the first
bungalow and not the bullies and what pu-nishment did they receive?
She says the teacher had conceded thatshe has been aware of the bullying, whichquestions the lack of action taken at thecamp.“Why does a bungalow filled with 15 kids
not have a teacher or adult present duringthe night?“And most importantly why did the tea-
chers not think that my son could contractE-coli from an incident like this and take im-mediate precaution?”
“I am furious about the fact that the schooldid not contact me immediately after the in-cident, and I got the impression they weretrying to sweep this incident under the car-pet.“As a single mother I felt immensely po-
werless in trying to protect my child.”The boy’s family feels that not enough has
been done by the school to address the inci-dent.“It is inconceivable that a child would re-
sort to such inhumane tactics and how is theschool going to prevent this from happeningagain? It is appalling that something likethis has happened at a school with a goodreputation,” the mother said.“I expect the school to do something to
make the kids understand this kind of beha-viour is not tolerated.”
Serious repercussionsJohn Buswell, a founder member of the
The Proactive Education Group, says agreat deal can be done to address bullyingin schools.According to him this is a growing pro-
blem in schools with up to 15 cases per dayreported to the group.“In many schools, bullying is out of
control and has huge psychological effectson the victims,” he said.“Victims of bullying often develop low-self
esteemwhich can lead to interpersonal rela-tionship problems later in life.In severe cases victims of bullying will
self-mutilate or even commit suicide,” hesaid.Bushwell says what happened to the boy
cannot be viewed as a prank and should bedealt with in very seriously light by the
school involved as this act poses serioushealth issues and can even be construed bycriminal legislation as assault. The Proactive Education Group, provides
a policy document to schools in SouthAfricaon how to deal with this ever growing trend.“We advise that all schools have a policy
document in place that defines what bully-ing is and provide a code of conduct. Itshould also provide the punitive measuresin place for perpetators,” he said.
Create a safe systemFurthermore, Bushwell says, there should
be a system in place whereby any child, pa-rent or teacher can safely report incidentsof bullying.“More importantly every child in the
school should be aware of this policy, under-stand the seriousness of it and have free ac-cess to it,” he added.“Line managers must be in place to inves-
tigate reportedmatters within seven days toprovide feedback and a course of action tobe followed.”Paddy Attwell, spokesperson for the De-
partment of Education in the Western Cape, said the department was aware of the allega-tions and viewed them in a serious light.“Our district office is investigating and
will provide support, as required. We cannotconfirm the facts at this stage, but we areaware that the alleged victim has been trau-matised and needs support,” he said.He advised all victims of bullying to con-
tact the department’s Safe Schools Call Cen-tre at 0800 45 46 47.Bastion Primary School declined to an-
swer any of TygerBurger’s questions or toprovide any comment on the issue.

Police identify key challengesDESIRÉE RORKE
@dezzierorke
Substance abuse, unemployment and alack of police visibility have beenidentified as the three main causes of
crime in the Kraaifontein police cluster.Additionally, the three main crimes arehouse burglaries, robberies and drug rela-ted crimes of which murder is the top con-tender.These findingwere revealed as part of the
policing needs and priorities (PNP) reportof 2013/14, released by theminister of Com-munity Safety Dan Plato in Kraaifonteinlast Monday. The PNP report provides an overview of
the root causes, motivations and main are-as where crimes are commited. The reportis prepared annually within all the clustersin the Western Cape by the Department ofCommunity Safety, with the aim to guideand influence policing priorities at provin-cial and national level. Plato explained:“The Constitution states that the cabinetminister responsible for policing must de-termine the national policing policy afterconsultingwith the provincial government, taking into account the policing needs andpriorities of the provinces as determined bythe provincial executives.”
Substance abuse fuels crimeThe Kraaifontein cluster includes Brac-
kenfell, Kraaifontein and Durbanville. Thepolice commanders of all three these stati-ons, CPF chairpersons and member of thevarious neighbourhood watches attendedthe meeting. The objective of the PNP re-port is to improve local police accountabili-ty and transparency as well as ensure thatresources are used well.“Crime statistics are no longer the only
reliable source of information to under-stand the crime trends in communities dueto underreporting and the late release of the
crime statistics,” says Plato. He says thatthe underlying principle for identifying thePNPs is to gaina comprehensiveunderstan-ding of what communities perceive as theirneeds and priorities and how the policemeets those needs. The PNP report is annually presented to
theNationalMinister for Police to be incor-porated into the their performance plans.According to Plato, accountability mee-
tings, research, crime stats, analysis and li-terature andmedia reviewswereamong themany tools used to determine the PNPs.Substance abuse was identified as being
33.3% of the cause for all crimes in the clus-ter, followed by unemployment at 14.94%and a lack of police visibility at 5.75%. Platoindicated that substance abuse plays a ma-jor role in increasing levels of violence andis the reason most crimes (including pro-perty related crimes) are committed becau-se the suspects need money to feed their al-cohol and drug addictions.Plato believes that police presence and vi-
sibility serves as a deterrent to crime and
must be increased, especially during theearly hours of the morning and evening. It was also discovered that some of the
dockets involving well known suspects inthe cluster often go missing and that thismotivates criminals to commitmore crime.
Believing in the police“Perceived police corruption could lead
to low levels of confidence and trust in thepolice and could affect levels of crime repor-ting negatively and lead to temptations forpeople to engage in criminal activity,” hesaid. Based on the outcome of the report theDepartment of Community Safety will re-commend several changes. At the top of the list is increasing of staff
and material resources at the three policestations, followed by installing more CCTVcameras in public areas and malls.Plato emphasised the need for shebeens
to be better regulated and better efforts ta-ken to revitalise substance abuse rehabili-tation centres and crime prevention pro-grammes, especially at schools.

Bykans elke naweekword jongmense in

Where there’s smoke, there’s waterThe City of Cape Town is rolling out the
use of smoke technology to detectillegal stormwater or sewer cross-
connections.According to a press released issued by
the City this week, the Water andSanitation Department’s first trial of newsmoke testing technology was a “roaringsuccess”. Testing was conducted in diffe-rent parts of the city and under varyingconditions to determine the system’s effi-cacy. This technology will now be used todetect illegal or unsanctioned stormwaterdischarges into the sewerage system.
Ernest Sonnenberg, the City’s maycomember for utility services says: “The in-
troduction of the smoke testing technologyrepresents a significant step forward forthe City, and is likely to result in signifi-cant savings for the ratepayer. Prelimina-ry estimates indicate that maximum sa-vings could be in the region of R36.55 milli-on.”
This new method of detection involvespumping smoke into the local sewerage sy-stem to locate inappropriate ingress ofstormwater into the sewerage system. Pre-viously it was not possible to detect or pin-point where this was taking place withoutentering a large number of properties, which are often difficult to access or obtainpermission to acess.
Now Water and Sanitation officials cansimply walk down the street and note thelocation of these cross-connections basedon the presence of swirls of smoke.
Where it is found that illegal orunsanctioned connections exist, the pro-perty owners will be provided with theircompliance to rectify the matter within astipulated period. Failing which, a fine willbe issued in terms of the City’s wastewaterby-law. “Illegal connections are problema-tic because, especially during wet weather, the presence of excess water can stretchthe capacity of the City’s wastewater con-veyance systems. Not only can this resultin overflows, but the City’s wastewater tre-
atment plants are being forced to processwater that otherwise should not have beentreated. Limiting the amount of water thatis unnecessarily treated every year willimprove the quality of effluent that entersthe environment,”says Sonnemberg. “Notonly will the environmental benefit be sig-nificant, but unpleasant overflows whichcould cause health issues will also be limi-ted, and there will be a significant savingfor the ratepayer. We urge residents to ple-ase cooperate with any City officials whoissue a notice that a contravention existson their property. It is only with your colla-boration that this problem can be effective-ly tackled.”

Peter van der Vindt (48) sê hy was altyd

More than half of the 280 new 3G and4G LTE base stations to be installedby Vodacom in the Western Cape-
will be situated in the Northern suburbs, says Richard Boorman, executive head ofcorporate communications of Vodacom.
By the end of this financial year Bracken-fell will have 12 3G and nine 4G sites.
This multi-million rand investment willsee the additional sites in eleven suburbsstretching from Milnerton and Blouberg-strand all the way to Kraaifontein.
According to Steven Barnwell, managingexecutive for Vodacom’s operations in theWestern Cape, this expansion forms part ofa R600 million network investment in theWestern Cape for the current financial ye-ar. “The bulk of this amount will go to-wards the network renewal and expandingour fibre optic network in this region. Weare also planning to increase the numberof 3G and LTE base stations by more than50%,” he said. LTE, long-term evolution or4G LTE, is a standard for wireless commu-nication of high-speed data for mobile pho-
nes and data terminals. Barnwell says thisupgrade will increase network capacityand provide improved voice quality and en-hanced mobile data speeds in the Cape Me-tro.“The expansion of LTE sites in the Nort-hern suburbs, means that smartphoneusers who reside here can now take advan-tage of fast LTE downloads speeds. WithLTE, video and music downloads can be ac-complished in a fraction of the time of tradi-tional 3G services,” he added.
One of Vodacom’s major strategic objec-tives is to sustainably reduce costs. “Itwould be simple to just reduce call ratesand data prices but this would be a disasterif rate reductions were not supported bynetwork investment to cope with the incre-ased demand.
“Vodacom’s strategy entails investingbillions of rand on the network to providethis additional capacity and ensure we’rebringing down the cost to communicate ona sustainable basis, with increased volu-mes offsetting lower prices.”,
Bellville will have 39 3G and 16 4G sites,whereas Kraaifontein will have 11 3G andsix 4G sites. Durbanville will have 40 3G si-tes and 17 4G sites.

The letter “Blaffende honde isverveelde diere” (TygerBurger,24 September) refers.I am experiencing a similar
situation. We are at the pointwhere we have had enough. Inmy case, an elderly lady livingon her own has a dog which isvery attached to her. What we have noticed is that
when she leaves the house, sheputs the dog outside – some-times she leaves the doginside. This obviously dependson how long she will be out.The dog will not stop howlinguntil the owner returns. Thesound it makes is like it’sexperiencing excruciating pain. The very first time we experi-enced this, we thought some-thing had happened to the ladyas the dog howled throughout
Look after yourdogs, please
the morning until the next day. Then we noticed she was notthere.I believe it’s about how a doghas been brought up. If youhave a dog that lives with youinside the house – that is itssafe haven. When you leave adog like that alone at home, you’ll have a dog that will pinefor you until you return. Pleasethink of your neighbours andmake alternative arrangements.

I am as shocked as everyoneabout the article (“Dog shotdead, airgun bullet lodged inheart”, TygerBurger, 24 Septem-ber).I believe the person responsi-
ble for this cruel and dangerousact committed a criminaloffence. Whatever firearm wasused (with expert accuracy Imight add) the intent was tokill. I would pursue the matterfurther and not let him getaway with this heinous act. Hehas caused untold emotionalharm to a five-year-old boywhose pet dog meant everythingto him and the rest of thefamily.I hope they catch you. You

In response to Colin Sutcliffe’sletter “Traffic cops never seenin Durbanville” (TygerBurger,24 September). I agree withwhat he says, you hardly seeany traffic police anywhere. Afew weeks ago, a couple oftraffic officials set up a speedtrap in Durbanville and when Ispoke to them regarding thefour-way stop 100m down theroad, where people very rarelystop, their response was: “Sorrywe are instructed to speed traphere.” So what they weresaying is that they are notpolicing, but collecting revenue. If you go into the trafficdepartment to report anincident, you are asked tocontact Goodwood as the trafficdepartment in Durbanville isonly for licensing.

I am responding to the ridicu-lous letter from Edwin Kanne-meyer (“No more learners atschool crossings”, TygerBurger,3 September). Scholar patrolteaches children a sense ofresponsibility. Isn’t it timechildren learned to toughen up?A little rain never hurt anyone. When I was at primary

The scent of newly blossomed wildflowersmingled with a smorgasbord of scrumptiousfoody aromas as scores of people gathered atBracken Nature Reserve on Heritage Day.
Heralding the coming of Spring, the diver-sity of local communities was celebrated inhigh spirits at the reserves’ annual SpringFestival, held with the support of theFriends of Bracken organisation.
Community members from Brackenfell,Kraaifontein and as far as Kuilsriver atten-ded the festival to revel in family fun, toge-therness and the colours of spring.
Tens of stalls, selling everything fromhandmade crafts and potplants to pancakesand Asian food kept visitors engrossed, whi-le nature enthusiasts were taken on walksto view Protea Scollymocephala, a new spe-cies that was discovered right there, in thereserve in June this year.
Reserve manager Tshepo Mamabolo says:“This species of protea has never grown inthis area of the city and was found in thenorth-western part of the reserve where theold landfill site was in operation for almost30 years.”
“We are thrilled about this discovery as itis a clear indication that the rehabilitationof the old landfill site is bearing fruit.”
Tshepo was doing a foot patrol in the reser-ve one morning in June tracking the spoorof a grysbok, when she stumbled upon theflower.
“I immediately knew this was a new spe-cies of flower in the reserve and had it identi-fied the next day by one of our botanists,”she said.
“After its closure in 2008 the landfill sitewas rehabilitated and hydro-seeded. Thethree healthy protea individuals are a resultof the hydro-seeding,” she said adding thatit is almost unfathomable to ponder how na-
ture has restored itself in the years since thelarge old landfill site has been closed.
The reserve is currently covered in a blan-ket of Cape daisies and other beautifaul fyn-bos species. Small animals and birds, incli-ding the Cape grysbok and jackal buzzard, has made the reserve their natural habitat.
The main event of the day was the firingof the canon on top of the hill to commemora-te the signal system used hundreds of yearsago to warn “burghers” of any impendingdanger approaching Table Bay.

A lip-smacking braai and a day filled withfun and games, saw members of TheHavenShelter celebrate Heritage Daywith dignity. The Haven is the only shelter in Kraaifon-
tein andBrackenfell to provide for the needsof the many homeless people in the area. Two third-year social work students from
the University of the Western Cape organi-sed the day to provide a non-threateningplatform for the members to spend some ti-me with their families.DerisiaNimrod andSoreneWilliamshave
been helping out at the shelter since Marchthis year as part of the practical phase oftheir training.Theyhavebeenassisting the resident soci-
al worker with counselling and groupwork.Nimrod saysmost of the the individualswhocurrently stay at the shelter ended up home-less due to substance abuse. As a result, all bonds with their families
are broken and no or very little contactexists, making the rehabilitation process somuch more difficult. She says that during the group therapy
sessions at the shelter, issues around familyconflict and life skills such as decision ma-king and relationship building are often dis-cussed.Although most of the family members in-
vited, did not show up for the event, the 100or so residents at The Haven got involved ina series of activities, including team buil-ding games.“Most of the acitivities focused on crea-
ting a positive outlook on life and encoura-ging the residents to take on the challengeof building anew future for themselves,” shesays.Afterward, in trueSouthAfrican style, the
day ended with a braai.“Almost all the participants afterward
said that they had learned alot and weremo-tivated by the interactive games and exerci-ses,” says Nimrod.

opposition and bad ideas;preparing for a crucial busi-ness pitch; handling thepressure of media inter-views and applying the un-written rules of communi-cating.
In the second part JohnLloyd, an internationalmarketing, sales and negoti-ation expert, will present“Stop Whining – Start Sel-ling.” Says Lloyd: “The oldeconomy is gone forever. So-me time-honoured, reliablebusiness strategies andskills still have their place. They must, however, be

Eating needles, bending cutlery and rea-ding people’sminds are just some of thethings you can expect to see at aMarcel
Oudejans show. The comedy magician is giving
Capetonians a rare chance to see him inaction on a public stage at this year’s CapeTown Fringe Festival.Marcel’s magic career started when he
was just eight years old and although he’sa Pinelands resident now, he grew up in theNorthern Suburbs area.“It was something that I was good at, even
at that age,” he says, adding: “I think Iwouldhave stopped had it not been for the fact thatI’d get the occasional show that would actu-ally give me money.”
TricksSo when other children went on to do part
time jobs like waiting tables, Marcel starteddeveloping his magic shows. Marcel startedout doing shows at the Bellville Library du-ring holidays, before moving on to a St El-mo’s in Brackenfell, where he’d earn R50and a pizza once a week, before he was evenold enough to work as a runner.By the time he was in Matric at Fairmont
High School, he was doing card tricks andmakingballoonanimals at theBellville Spurfor tips.“The better the tricks got, the better the
tips got,” he recalls.Withno formal training, this was a good way for Marcel to learn togauge his audience. After a short stint working in PC tech sup-
port in George, Marcel moved back to CapeTown to be with his girlfriend, now wife. Inthe beginning he held a day jobwhile perfor-ming in the evenings. At the time he was performing six nights
a week for three hours a night at Cubaña inEdward Street, until he got enough show en-
quiries to quit his “nine to five”.Today, Marcel is one of the country’s lea-
ding performers. In 2008 he was recognisedas one of Africa’s leading magicians at theVismayan International Magic Conventionheld in India.Marcel points out that the fact that there
are very few people who do what he do, andthat he never really has an idea where he’sgoing to be next makes his job far more inte-resting than being stuck in an office.Marcel is also a speaker and an MC and
is in high demand for corporate function, which sees him travelling all over the count-ry.It’s also why the public rarely get to see
what he does, but Marcel says the Fringe
Festival set up with its marketing and va-ried audience makes it far more viable forhim to put on a public show.“It’s also just fun to do a couple of shows
of what I want to do,” he says, as the showshe does for corporates are tailor-made to suittheir needs.
Play along“I get to play a bit more, there’s less risk.”Marcel says people have preconceived ide-
as aboutmagic shows based onwhat they’veseen and although he does do things likementalism, he says: “I never try to give theimpression that I’m doing this because I ha-ve special powers and abilities.”Marcel says he gets to do things extraordi-
nary and funwith lots of audience participa-tion.“Magic is about creating a shared experi-
ence ofwonder and excitement,” he says ent-husiastically. Marcel is a pragmatist andsays it doesn’t matter how good a magicianis, there is always a trick behind it, whichis why he doesn’t try to fool his audience. His show for the Fringe Festival is titled:
Slight of Mouth – The art of talking your wayout of anything.Marcel says there’s a lot of magic that lite-
rally happens with hismouth, but there’s al-so a lot of what he’s saying not matching upto what he’s doing.Marcel will be performing Sleight of
Mouth at the Cape Town City Hall’s Theatre3 onWednesday 1October at 19:00, Thursday2 October at 22:00, Friday 3 October at 17:00and Saturday 4 October at 20:00. Lion, a friendly, alert German Shepherd/Basset cross has been waitingfor two years for a “forever home”.
Adopt a petand find yourideal matchOctober is international
Adopt A Shelter Dogmonth.This shines a spot-
light on the canine friends of theFisantekraal Animal Welfareawaiting their forever homes.Every year millions of won-
derful dogs and cats enter res-cue centres and shelters andtragically, many will never lea-ve. “Yet these loving animalsare so worth bringing into yourfamily. By adopting one, youlight up both its life and yours,”said Jennifer Davies of the Fi-santekraal Animal Welfare(FAW).
Finding your ideal match“A common misperception is
that these animals are somehow‘substandard’ or require specialhandling due to abuse or ne-glect.“This couldn’t be further
from the truth. Yes, some mayhave special needs, but the vastmajority have delightful natu-res, are in excellent health andwill easily fit into your home,”she said.“Many come from normal
backgrounds – it was just thattheir owners just no longerwant or were able to keep them;or they got lost and were neverreunited.“A surprisingly large propor-
tion are even purebreds alt-hough mixed breeds are just asbeautiful,” she said. Reputableanimal shelters know the ani-mals’ personalities, likes anddislikes, and can match youwith your ideal dog or cat, Jen-nifer continued.Adoption fees are necessary
for several reasons as taking ca-re of these animals costs a fortu-ne. “Your pet’s adoption feehelps the welfare take care ofother animals in need. Further-
more, a popular source of ani-mals for dog fight bait or otherforms of abuse is ‘free to a goodhome’ adverts – these individu-als are unlikely to pay adoptionfees,” she said. The average adoption fee is
aroundR500 to R700 and usuallyincludes spaying or neutering, vaccinations and deworming, which would cost you well overR1500 at private rates.“Buying puppies or kittens
from pet shops and online isbest avoided as it contributes to-wards backyard breeding andpuppy or kitten mills.“Many of these animals’
parents are nothing more thanmoney-making breedingmachi-nes, living in appalling circum-stances. Because of the moneyinvolved, welfares struggle toget them sterilised and improvetheir lives,” Jennifer warned.Home checks can make peo-
ple nervous, but they are donefor your benefit and the ani-mal’s. Abusers are highlyskilled at pretending to befriendly, kind-hearted animallovers, she said.
How to adopt“Visiting the home is a good
way of ensuring that someone iswho andwhat they say they are.“It is also important to get a
feel for the home to ensure thatthe animal will actually fit intoyour life and family; that he orshe is the right one for you,” shesaid. Each FAW dog adopted bet-
ween 1 and 31Octoberwill recei-ve a free FAW goodie bag.V Send an email to [email protected] or phone084 519 0380. For those unable toadopt, FAW has a sponsorship pro-gramme for dogs awaiting adoptions.Visit www.faw.za.org for more info.

Die plaaslike a cappella-groep gebruik
saamgesing,” vertel Manina Pretorius.

Ajax Cape Town will be calling Cape TownStadium home for the next three seasons.Last Thursday, the City council approved
an agreement with the Urban Warriors.Mayoral committee member for Tourism,
Events and Economic Development, Gar-reth Bloor says: “We are pleased to havereached an amicable agreement with AjaxCT.
“The team has a huge following of soccerenthusiasts andwe are excited that the icon-ic stadiumwill be their home ground for thenext three seasons. This is part of our commitment to building
an inclusive city by supporting sport thathave big fan bases in our communities.”As part of the agreement, the City of Cape
Town will carry the stadium’s direct
cost and specific service costs for the games. The income accrued through ticket sales
will be paid to the City. This will go on until the estimated R3-mil-
lion direct costs have been recouped. The ex-pected sale of 57 000 tickets will adequatelycover the event costs.According to an official statement:
“Should there be a shortfall, Ajax will con-
tribute an amount up to R270 000towards the shortfall. The historical data of the last three sea-
sons’ ticket sales reveal that this is indeeda viable model.Ajax CT and the City of Cape
Town will share income generatedthrough sponsorships or income streamsidentified by the club.”
Ajax takes over Cape Town stadium
Building good rugby, from the bottom upThe second edition of the u-15 Legends
Iqhawe Week will be held at City Parkin Athlone fromMonday 6 to Thursday
9 October. The tournament is an extension of Vuka
Rugby, a provincial rugby developmentproject.Vuka Rugby spokesperson Ismail Teladia
says: “Our development projects focus onyoung players in disadvantaged communi-ties who have traditionally been excluded
from structured rugby training and grass-roots-level competition.”“Our broad aim is to uplift individuals,
and by extension communities, create ad-vancement opportunities for talented play-ers and build a deeper, broader pool of pro-fessional level talent.”The tournament is a joint venture be-
tween the South African Rugby Union andthe South African Rugby Legends Associa-tion.
Teladia says it aims to create a gatewayfor players from new, introductory, small, rural, lower-league and non-traditional rug-by schools to participate in a tournamentequal in stature to that of the National Cra-ven Week.A total of 14 provincial unions: Western
Province, Boland, South Western Districts,Eastern Province, Border, KwaZulu-Natal,Lions, Griquas, Free State, Griffons, BlueBulls, Leopards, Falcons and Pumas will
participate in this year’s installment.“The week promises to be very exciting
and a lot of interest has been shown in it.The coaches and directors from the top-fiverugbyplaying schools in each of the 14 rugbyunions have been invited to attend to ob-serve the immense talent which will be ondisplay,” Teladia says.“It’s a great opportunity for these young
players to showcase the incredible talentthat is so prevalent in their communities.”
Table View women ‘roses among the thorns’In an enthralling final title match on 19September, Table View Football Club star-ted off with a one point lead at the top ofthe log table against Durbanville.Either a win or a drawwould have given
either Table View or Durbanville theleague title. At halftime Table View were 2 -0 down
but dug deep and came back in the secondhalf with determination to score threegoals and clinch the title with a 3 - 2 win.The team has remained unbeaten this
season so far.The Table View women’s side was star-
ted about 10 years ago but currently only-Ashley Kondowe, the captain of the teamis still involved in her eighth season beingthe longest standing member.Table View is making great strides in
women’s soccer and their results are testo-mony to this.“For me as the coach, this is my third
season and my reason for coaching wo-men’s soccer is not only because it’s oneof the biggest growing sports in the worldbut also to improve them in a largely maledominated sport.“It is time for the roses to be seen amongs
the thorns and nurtured towards success. There are a lot of young girls playing soc-cer at school level so it’s a shame we can’tgetmore of themdown to play at club level, where I do believe the coaching and trai-ning is at a more specialised level.”She says that another reason for the
shortage of women players is that at clublevel the girls play with the boys until theu-13 stage but then the boys are movedstraight to senior level.
This leaves ahuge gap foru-15 oru-17 lea-gues which is where the school teams andplayers could bemore utilised and broughtin to compete at club level.Table View coach, Gary Heyburgh says:
“I believe this to be the objective of our lo-cal CTTFA Ladies League in the future–the sooner the better.”There are three levels of progression, the
CTTFA League, if you win that league youcanprogress to theSAFAPromotionalLea-gue and if you win that you can move upto the top level in the Sasol SAFA PremierLeague.“We have lost a few players over the last
fewyears to another big club because thoseplayers wanted to play and compete at ahigher level in the SAFA Promotional Lea-gue,”saysAshley. “So for us to avoid losingmore players in the future, we need to winthe CTTFA League and have the choice tomove up. Currently with four games to gowe are 7 points clear on top of the log andunbeaten in the CTTFA Ladies League.“We also entered our team into the Coca
Cola Cup both last year and this year (theFA Cup of Ladies Football) and made itthrough to the top 16 teams both timesbefore losing to SAFA promotional teams.“In terms of going forward, it’s our objec-
tive to have two side next season by win-ning the CTTFA Ladies League this yearand pushing the one team up to the SAFApromotional Ladies League and bringingin more players to put a second team intothe local CTTFA Ladies League,” said Ga-ry.The club wishes to encourage more wo-
men players to try out for the local clubleague. The club will host open trials forall adults, students and girls over the ageof 13 years. This will be held on Monday13 October at 18:00 at the Table View Foot-ball Club.Contact Gary Heyburgh on 072 388 6617

Durbanville sensei Graham Turner isno stranger to mixed martial arts(MMA) and has been on the mat for
the better part of 20 years. He recently met up with Nathan Raaths
from Johannesburg, who was awarded ablackbelt at theDeLaRivaBrazilian Jiu-Jit-su.“I actually started communicating with
Nathan on Facebook.“It was about a month ago that he invited
me up to Johannesburg to come and trainwith him at his gym.“It was a total new experience compared
to what you see in MMA fights, where youalso train without a shirt.“With the Marcello Monteiro system you
train and fight with a gi, which is the sameclothes that guyswearwhopractice karate.”“It changes everything because you can
control much more of the movements andmomentum by holding onto the gi of youropponent.“It’s always exciting and a challenge to
learn and expand your knowledge in the dif-ferent forms of MMA,” said Graham.
For the next round...Because of Graham’s years of experience,
sound technique and work rate, he has beengraded to the high level of purple belt andwill be graded for his brown belt in a fewweeks under the watchful eye of Raaths.Graham and his students do their MMA-
training on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sa-turdays, and gi-grappling onTuesdays,Wed-nesdays and Saturdays.“I’membracing the role as a teacher inhel-
ping students find their path.“It gives me great satisfaction to see how
these students grow in stature and find con-fidence in themselves and just becomingmo-re positive individuals.“I’m also excited for Nathan to come down
to Cape Town in the nextmonth or so to hosta seminar of the Deliriva system ofMarcelloMonteiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.With this style of training, and in specific
with the upcoming seminar, wewant to helpand nurture people from all walks of life, notjust serious fighters who live and breatheMMA.”If you are interested to get join
