die kinders so in die steek gelaat het nie.“My bekommernis is dat hulle binnekort

gaan verhuis. Wie gaan dan die kinders severhaal ken? Wie gaan vir hulle opstaan enwat gaanvanhulleword?Tot nou toehet allepogings om te help op dowe ore geval,” sê sy.Nog ’n buurvrouwat ook anoniemwil bly,

het aan TygerBurger vertel dat die oudsteseun aan haar beken het dat sy ma homslaan, nadat syhomuitgevrahet oor die bloumerke wat oral op sy lyf sigbaar was.

Despite having drastically decreasedthe number of disabled parking baysfrom 40 to nine, management at the

new re-vamped Bracken Hyper maintainsthat the centre is “wheelchair friendly”.

Before the multi-million rand re-develop-ment started at the centre last year, the exist-ing 40 disabled bays were cordoned off witha boom in a separate parking area, which ac-cording to centre manager Mariska Gerber,was not practical for the re-development ofthe centre.

“The parking had to change due to the newstructure of the building,” she said.

“We have made provision for ramps aswell as nine new disabled parking bays in

front of the centre. We have also made provi-sion for seven ‘moms and babies’ parking infront of the centre, which is also availablefor the disabled people if nothing is availa-ble.

“These are now aside from the other ‘new’parking bays that we positioned right infront of the centre which makes it conven-ient for the elderly/disabled to enter and exitthe building,” she adds.

Furthermore, Gerber says the centre is inthe process of getting signage erected re-garding clamping should a visitor not be dis-playing a valid disabled sticker acquiredfrom the traffic department, when parked ina disabled bay.

Old-time Bracken Hyper shopper ReonNel, disagrees. “I am on crutches perma-nently and on several occasions was forced

to park a long distance from the entrance,as all the disabled bays for full,” he says.

“This was never a problem before.”According to Nel, who visits the centre

three times a week, two out of those threetimes, there is no disabled parking baysavailable for him to use.

“I have been disabled for 20 years, and Ifind it arrogant for this centre not to see theproblem for what it is and then still call thecentre ‘wheelchair or disabled friendly’.There is simply not enough parking bays al-located for disabled people,” he says.

“I wish the centre management and plan-ners at this and other centres can put them-selves in the shoes of a disabled person,when they do the initial planning.

“They might look at things differently,” hesays.

Hyper revamp drops disabled bays

A new and improved Tygerberg Hospital ison the cards as a major redevelopmentproject is announced for the facility.

This was announced by Western CapeMinister of Health, Theuns Botha, on Mon-day with news that the planned new centralTygerberg Hospital will require a capitalbudget of above R5 billion.

The redevelopment of Tygerberg Hospitalhas long been envisaged with the existing fa-cility planned in the late 1950s, planning andbuilding in the 1960s and commissioning in1972.

Currently it operates 1 384 beds with morethan 67 000 admissions in a year.

In his address Botha said the maturationof the Western Cape Government Health’svision ‘Healthcare 2030’ emphasised theneed to redevelop a central hospital.

“The redevelopment model incorporatesdata on the burden of disease, current utili-

sation rates of hospitals, and the need forspecialised treatment across the metro.

“It is envisaged that the new hospital willaccommodate 1 239 more beds.

“The additional beds required to addressthe patient needs for general specialist serv-ices in this area will be accommodated insurrounding hospitals, increasing their ca-pacity.”

In addition, plans are being developed fora 300-bed Northern Hospital beyond 2020.

Some of the objectives of a redevelopedhospital include provision of a facility suita-ble for training of undergraduates and post-graduate students The existing Forensic Pa-thology Laboratory on the estate has alsobeen earmarked for redevelopment.

It is also important to note that this facilityis a major incident centre for the WesternCape, and forms part of the province’s Disas-ter Management portfolio.

Die Stad Kaapstad beplan om ’n pro-gram te begin om die plaag van in-dringer-perdebye in dele van die

noordelike voorstede hok te slaan.Nadat TygerBurger verlede week oor dié

probleem by ’n tuin in Kraaifontein berighet (“Indringer-perdebye neem tuine oor”),het ons tientalle oproepe ontvangvan leserswat dieselfde probleem ondervind in anderdele van die stad, insluitende Brackenfell,Durbanville en selfs Bellville.

Al die lesers het dieselfde probleem: Dieperdebye neem hul tuine oor!

Die insek is geïdentifiseer as ’n indrin-ger-papierneswesp van Europa, wat vol-gens navorsers vir die eerste keer in Suid-Afrika opgemerk is in Kuilsrivier in 2008.

KompeteerVolgens dr. Ruan Veldtman, senior na-

vorser in die departement bewaringsekolo-gie en entomologie by die Universiteit Stel-lenbosch (US), kompeteer die wesp direkmet inheemse spesies vir voedsel en skui-ling – tot só ’n mate dat die inheemse spesieuitgedun word en die natuurlike prosesseversteur word. Op TygerBurger se Face-bookblad het talle lesers hul kommer uitge-spreek. Nolia Schoeman van Kleinbegin sêdie perdebye is volop by hulle.

“Die Stad Kaapstad se departement vanomgewingshulpbronnebestuur werk nousaam met die US se entomologie-departe-ment om die spesie op te spoor en sodoende’n volhoubare oplossing te vind,” sê LouiseStafford, indringerspesie-koördineerdervan die Stad se bogenoemde departement.

BekommerdStafford sê dat die Stad en die navorsings-

groep bekommerd is oor die potensiële im-pak van die wespes op die omgewing, maardathullenet toepaslikkanoptreenadathul-le vasgestel het waar die wespes gekonsen-treer is. “Kennis oor hoe die perdebye doel-treffend beheer kan word, word vereis,daarom beplan die Stad ’n proefterrein vir’n program. Pogings om die wespes te be-heer sal so gou moontlik begin,” sê sy.

“Beheermaatreëls sal begin sodra ons dienodige inligting saamgevat het,” sê sy.

Bates, ahead of the band’s South Africantour.Last time ELO were in South Africa,

Phil says he played with ELO Part II, inaround 1995, the band only played one out-door concert in Johannesburg.“It was a very strange tour we were on,

hopping around from country to countrywith one gig here and one gig there,” Philexplains, adding that he’s always wantedto visit Cape Town.“I’m actually very happy that we were

able to arrange a concert there,” he says,speaking from his home in Berlin.The British group ELO was formed in

1971, by RoyWood and Jeff Lynne with theidea of creating popular rock music, withclassical nuances. The group disbanded in1988, only to be revived by drummer, BevBevan, in 1989 as ELO Part II, which iswhen Phil came on board.“I have quite a long association with

ELO,” Phil says. His own band at the timewere signed to the same label as ELO inthe 70s and toured with them internation-ally.“When ELO Part II was being formed it

was a perfect fit really, because of my pastassociation with them and because I knewthe guys and music very well,” he says.Phil continues by saying while all of

ELO’s songs are interesting and greatsongs to sing, the one that he feels reallycaptures the spirit of the band is “Mr BlueSky”.“It has all the elements in there that rep-

resent ELO, I think,” Phil elaborates. Hesays fans can expect to hear this as wellas “all the popular major hits” when theband performs locally.Theywill be joined on stage by Gauteng-

based quartet, The Muses.“We play with string sections of differ-

ent sizes,” Phil explains, adding that thesuggestion to use TheMuses in SouthAfri-ca came from the local promoters.“We’ve been in contact and we’ve lis-

tened on YouTube and they seem verygood,” Phil says; “It seems like an interest-ing combination – the young and old.”Phil says jokingly that even if it doesn’t
