    ith new developments in Durbanville

    and Kraaifontein putting even more

    pressure on the Durbanville police,

    the communitymustkeeponputtingpressure

on the authorities for more resources.

This message was conveyed strongly and

clearly at the annual general meeting of the

    Durbanville Community Police Forum (CPF)

    last Wednesday evening.

    The new developments of Greenville,

Graanendal 2 and Clara Anna Fontein will re-

    sult in aneed formorepolice resources,which

we are not going to get.

It is going to be crazy, said Lieutenant

Colonel Marius Swanepoel at the meeting.

He said the Durbanville police area is vast

    and covers about 181 km.

The rural area is very big. In any shift two

to three vehicles are deployed, of which one

    is always in Fisantekraal.

Durbanville has two problem areas in

which 44% of crime is committed Fisante-

kraal and the Durbanville central business

    district (CBD).

A total of 23% of all crime occurs in Fisan-

tekraal 1 054 cases in the past year (from 1

    April 2014 to 31March 2015),mostly liquor and

drug-related, as well as contact crime and

    property related crime, he said.

In the CBD 21% of the crime occurred a

    total of 956 cases.

These were mostly theft out or frommotor

vehicles, common theft, contact crime or

    property related crime.

The reality is that these two areas drain

    our power, said Swanepoel.

Good news is that three new students were

taken in at the Durbanville police station this

year. They can be deployed in 2016. Another

three will then be trained in 2016, he said.

Without our partners, which include the

    Durbanville CPF, neighbourhoodwatches, se-

curity companies and the Victim empower-

ment programme (VEP), it would not have

    been possible.

Our partners have also invested in licence

plate recognition (LPR) cameras to make our

    community safe, Swanepoel said.

Dennis Smit, on behalf of the Durbanville

Business, asked whether any future planning

has been done in respect of the expected thou-

sands of new residents with the Greenville

    and other developments.

    FROM PAGE 1

What future planning will the police do to be

on top of it? We have been battling for over

30 years for a new police station, Smit said.

Lesley Ashton, chairperson of the Tyger-

berg Cluster Community Police Board (in-

    cluding seven police stations), saidDanPlato,

    provincial minister of community safety,

started a process of gunning the national

government for an extra station since 2013.

    Both Kraaifontein and Durbanville have

had huge developments and police services

    are under pressure, she said.

The problem is that it is considered as a

soft, long-term problem. It is not visually in

    the face yet, Ashton said.

But, we will continue pushing for what we

refer to as the forgotten North. It is not only

regarding police services, but also other so-

cial structures such as transport. It will be an

environmental wave that will affect us quite

    seriously.

Although there are talks about land ear-

marked for a newpolice station inGreenville,

the community will have to make themselves

seriously heard to relieve Durbanville and

Kraaifontein of the strugglewith poor resour-

ces in the growing areas. Our communities

must not go on idle and think we are on top

of it. I would hope to see a new police station

in 10 to 12 years time, Ashton said.

The meeting was also held to elect a new

    chairperson, secretary and assistant secre-

    tary.

Denzil Smerdon was elected as the new

    chairperson.

    n

    Samesmelting van twee subtak-

ke van die AHI-sakekamer in die

    noordelike voorstede beloof om

    voortaan meer betrokkenheid onder

    plaaslike sakelui te bewerkstellig.

    Daar is vandeesweek amptelik aange-

    kondig dat die eertydseAHIBellville- en

    AHI Oostenberg-sakekamers nou as die

    AHI Tygerberg bekend sal staan.

Dit maak net soveel meer sin. Werk-

saamhede sal meer sentraal wees en

vanuit n bestuursoogpunt gaan dit baie

makliker wees om aktiwiteite te kordi-

neer, s Phillip van Zijl, voorsitter.

Die AHI Tygerberg bestaan reeds se-

dert die tagtigerjare en het tradisioneel

    Bellville, Parow en Goodwood bedien.

In 2013 was daar in Brackenfell die

behoefte om n sakekamer te stig, hoof-

saaklik omdat sakelui besef het dat in-

dien Brackenfell nie ook n stadsverbete-

ringsgebied tot stand bring nie, agteruit-

gang ons dorp se voorland is, s Van Zijl,

dorp is.

In September vanjaarhet ek as voorsit-

ter van die AHI Tygerberg met George

Ferreira, toe voorsitter van die Oosten-

berg-subkamer, n gesprek gehad oor die

sinvolheid van n subkamer in Bracken-

    fell.

    Ons hetmet dieOostenberg-bestuur en

    die AHI Tygerberg-bestuur gekonsulteer

en besluit om voortaan as een sakekamer

te funksioneer, wat dan Bellville, Parow,

Goodwood en groter Brackenfell sal dek,

verduidelik hy. Van Zijl s dat huidige le-

de baie positief is oor di verwikkeling.

    Daar is netwerkgeleenthede op ver-

skillende plekke en almal kan alles onder

    een vaandel bywoon. Verskeie aktiwitei-

    sentrale vaandel beplan.

In Februarie hou ons n potjiekos-kom-

petisie vir ondernemings en in Maart is

die algemene jaarvergadering. In April is

die begrotingsdinee met die Stad Kaap-

stad en in Mei sal daar n netwerkgeleent-

heid wees by die Groen Energie-ontbyt.

In Junie hou ons n brandewyn-proe-

aand en in Augustus n vroue-ontbyt. Ons

beplan ook n opleidingseminaar vir en-

trepreneurs, waarvan die datum later be-

    kend gemaak sal word.

Volgens Van Zijl het die AHI Tygerberg

baie bereik in die laaste paar jaar.

Ons was instrumenteel om die Voor-

    trekkerwegkorridor-stadsverbeterings-

Tydens

    vaart.

    ow many undiscovered Wayde

    van Niekerks are possibly wan-

    dering around? was the rhetori-

cal question posed by HT Alexander, the

    principal of Bernadino Heights Secondary

School, on the occasion of the opening of a

new facility in Scottsdene on Saturday.

In the wake of the recent Scottsdene High

School building debacle which left the

    Scottsdene community somewhat disillu-

sioned after learners were left without

classrooms for months on end, the provin-

cial government's timing was spot on.

The facility, worth over R28 million and

known as a MOD cluster, was personally

handed over to the community by Western

    Cape premier Helen Zille.

An acronym for Mass participation, op-

    portunity and access, development and

growth, the MOD facility will provide aft-

    er-school sport and recreational activities

to learners from communities where these

opportunities are needed most, Zille said at

    the opening.

Here learners will have the opportunity

and support to access tutoring, career ad-

vice, sports facilities and the arts. Parents,

principals, school governing bodies and the

school community now have the opportuni-

ty to do their part by encouraging learners

to participate and excel. Our government is

    working tirelessly to create opportunities

for learners to be competitive in the world

    after school.

Built on the premises of the Bernadino

    Heights High School andWatsonia Primary

School, the facilitywill serve learners of Ca-

    valleria, Parkdene and Watsonia primary

schools, as well as Bernadino Heights and

    Scottsdene high schools.

Here learners will have the opportunity

to participate in activities such as athletics,

    cross-country running, cricket, chess, foot-

ball, hockey, tennis, volleyball and a debat-

    ing society.

    The sport infrastructure is complement-

    edbyacademicandeLearning support. This

    first-class educational support for learners

will be provided by our Year beyond (Yebo)

mentors a group of dedicated, competent

graduates and matriculants who have dedi-

cated a year of their lives to leading other

learners in their school careers, says Jessi-

ca Shelver from the department of educa-

tion. Learners will also get the necessary

life skills training at the clusters. This will

include health and career awareness to help

learners secure jobs once they leave

    school.

    Facility to help

Western Cape premier Helen Zille, flanked by

ministers of education, Debbie Schfer, and

cultural affairs, Anroux Marais, sounds off the

    opening of the facility.

    T

he City of Cape Town hosted its first

    ever annual neighbourhood watch

    (NHW) awards last Friday evening.

Of the sevenwinners, five are fromnorth-

ern suburb areas likeKuils River, Bellville,

    Milnerton and Blue Downs.

Hylton Mitchell, an organiser of the

event, said the NHW awards nominations

committee received a total of 122 entries

from watches all over the city.

The inaugural awards event brings to

light the incredible volunteer work being

done by NHW members who often at great

personal cost and sacrifice do this kind of

    community service work without seeking

    any favour or reward.

NHW formations based on crime trend

research is one of the most effective ways

crime is reduced in communities. By con-

ducting regular patrols these NHW forma-

tions add an additional safety net for local

    residents and communities often ravaged

the target of crowbar gang-style break-ins

or hijacking across Cape Town, he added.

According to Mitchell the Citys safety

and security directorate will be providing

more training, resources and support to

    NHWs across the Metropole.

The first NHW Member of Year winners

were: Neil Thyss from the Tuscany Crime

Watch in Blue Downs and fromnearbyVre-

delust in Kuils River, Logan Frieslaar.

The Safe City award went to Lianne Lip-

pert from the Tygerhof NHW in Milnerton,

with the Innovation award going to Reagan

Croeser from the Summer Greens NHW.

The Working Partnership award went to

the Loevenstein NHW in Bellvilles chair-

    man, Hennie Koekemoer.

The Community Cohesion award went to

Amina Rajap from Statice Heights NHW in

Athlone, and the NHW of the Year was the

Ikamva Peace Makers from Samora Ma-

chel. The Above and Beyond award went to

Tony Schreiber from the Bergvliet NHW.

    he Victim Empowerment Programme

(VEP) of the Durbanville police is in

urgent need of more volunteers to re-

lieve the pressure on the current team.

This was shared by Genni Engelbrecht,

coordinator of theVEP, at the annual gener-

al meeting of the Durbanville Community

    Police Forum (CPF) last Wednesday.

We have 15 volunteers on the roster in

Durbanville, and only two in Fisantekraal.

One of the latter, Aunty Betty, works daily.

She also has a full-time job and sometimes

just goes home in themorning after her vol-

unteer shift to get ready for work. We tried

to recruit more volunteers in Fisantekraal,

but with no success, Engelbrecht said.

Since June 2013 until now the volunteers

of theVEPhave supported 582victims in 269

cases, of which 159 victims of residential

robberies, 88 victims of business robberies,

29 victims in cases of domestic violence, 17

    victims in cases of neglectedandabandoned

children and 87 cases of suicide and at-

tempted suicide. In November alone they

supported 16 victims in five cases.

Engelbrecht also proposed that the CPF

make an allowance available to the VEP.

    TheVEP serves the broader community.

We need to put a process in place for assist-

ance for the volunteers. They receive no re-

muneration for what they do. My wish for

the team is to somehow thank them at the

end of the year for the hours and resources

they have put in, she said.

A functionwill be held tomorrow evening

    (Thursday) at the Bloemendal Restaurant

for the team, donated by Leon van Wyk of

Being IT, also a member of the Nerina

    Neighbour Watch, after Engelbrechts plea

    lastWednesday.TheresaUys, councillor for

    ward 21, supported Engelbrechts request

for an allowance at the meeting and said it

should be addressed urgently.V To make a

donation towards the volunteers, send an

email to [email protected] or contact

    Lieutenant Marchell Rhode (Durbanville)

City cemeterieswill offer limited services on

public holidays over the festive season and

    on specific public holidays.

    According to theCitysMaycomember for

    community services and special projects,

Belinda Walker, there will be limited or no

burials taking place at some of the cemeter-

    ies managed by the City.

All of the Citys cemeteries will be open

daily, including public holidays, as these

days are generally popular days for families

to pay their respects to loved ones who have

    passed on, said Walker.

The limited service refers only to burials.

On 16 December cemeteries will be open

for burials until 13:00; on 25 December and

1 January cemeteries will be closed for buri-

als; and on 26 December and 31 December

cemeteries will be open until 13:00. Cemeter-

heBellville leader of the countrys Dag-

ga Party, Jeremy Acton, is calling all

supporters of the so-called dagga cul-

    ture to a night vigil.

The partys hearings in the Cape High

    Court,which challenge the constitutionality

    and question the justification

of the prohibition of dagga, are

set to continue on Monday 7

    December.

    As such, Acton who hopes

    to come out smoking that

    Monday hopes to garner as

    Thousands of supporters of

of dagga for the public benefit

are expected to come out smok-

ing in Cape Town ... next week

    during the hearings, he said

    The Dagga Party of South

Africa has issued a call to all members of the

dagga culture in the Western Cape to attend

Town, outside the Cape Town High Court.

Acton said the eventwill start theMonday

at 08:30 and is set to end at 16:00 the Tuesday.

This includes the planned overnight outside

    the court on Monday night.

This gathering is required to provide evi-

dence to the court of the existence and soli-

darity of the dagga culture, and we call on

all supporters of legislation to bring posters

in support of legalisation and claim of dagga

    rights, Acton said.

Acton added more than 4 000

had already signed up in sup-

port of the case, basing his sta-

tistics on the Facebook page for

    the event under the search

    terms constitutional dagga

    hearings.

He said the MC teamwill be

    the BlazeRyders group from

    Somerset West.

    I hope thepeople of thedagga

    culture will show the country

that when we claim our rights

to cannabis, we are a peaceful

    grouping deserving of our

through art for more than a

    decade. She has been passion-

ate about making the arts ac-

cessible to the disabled in her

    capacity as director of audi-

    ence development and educa-

tion for the theatre, being a

    disabled person herself.

    Belinda Bell Jackson from

    the United Nations Associa-

    tion of South Africa (Unasa),

    one of the organisations Le

Roux has built close ties with,

congratulated her at the onset of the cam-

paign calling for 16 days of no violence

against women and children on 25 No-

    vember.

    As director of audience development

    and education at Artscape for

the last decade or so, she has

    ensured that many margina-

    lised communities have been

    greatly empowered to become

    lovers of theatre, and many

    high school kids and young

    people are currently involved

    in the performing arts

    through her visionary leader-

    ship, Jackson said.

Le Roux is known for stag-

    ing full Artscape productions

    in someof the provinces poor-

    est townships, fulfilling her

dream of taking the arts into

the heart of the countrys previously dis-

    advantaged communities, and leaving

    lasting impressions on the youth.

    leaner, fresher airwas inhaledby resi-

    dents in Kraaifontein and surround-

ing suburbs during the last year, ac-

cording to a recent air quality report .

And if these standards are kept up, resi-

dents in these areas can rest assured that

they will never be plagued by the so-called

brown haze that hangs over the Mother

City each winter. This haze is described as

a brown smog in the atmosphere during the

winter months due to the accumulation of

    gaseous and particulate pollutants.

Not only do recent air pollution levels

measured at an air qualitymonitoring labo-

    ratory inWallacedene indicate a downward

trend over the last few years, but this also

confirms that the average air quality in this

region is well below the South African stan-

dard. Only once during 2015 was the stan-

    dard measure of PM10 exceeded.

Particulate Matter (PM) is the term for

solid or liquid particles found in the air. It

can be directly emitted or can be formed in

    the atmosphere when gaseous pollutants

such as SO2 (sulfur dioxide) and NOx (ge-

neric term for nitric oxide NO and nitrogen

dioxide NO2) react to form fine particles.

An air quality standard of PM10 was es-

tablished to focus on smaller particles that

are likely responsible for adverse health ef-

fects because of their ability to reach the

lower regions of the respiratory tract.

    The PM10 standard includes particles

with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less

(0,0004 inches or one-seventh the width of

    a human hair).

David Oliver from the Citys health de-

partment said that elevated PM10 levels are

caused by several factors such as increased

traffic, domestic fires and the recirculation

of windblown dust. The monitoring labora-

tory was commissioned by the City and a

special task team formed in 2012 to ward off

a pending air pollution crisis in the far

    northern regions of the city.

    Proportional representative councillor

for the DA, Roxanne Hoorn, moved for this

    intervention in September 2012.

According to her better service delivery

to poorer areas such as Wallacedene could

prevent a crisis. At the time she predicted

that the provision of greener openareas and

more paved roads and sidewalkswould alle-

    viate some of the pollutants.

A report on air quality in Wallacedene

done in 2011, indicated elevated PM10 levels

similar to that of Khayelitsha where the

    brown haze is endemic.

The sources of thesehigh levels in Kraai-

fontein primarily originated from the ille-

gal burning ofwastematerials such as tyres

and copper cables, the burning of wood for

    domestic purposes, vehicle emissions and

dust from large unpaved areas during

    windy conditions.

At the most recent meeting Brackenfell

    ward councillor Marian Nieuwoudt was

elated with the good news and confirmed

what Hoorn predicted three years earlier.

The biggest problem being dust was

eliminated when large open spaceswere de-

veloped for housing and new roads along

with new sidewalks where dusty roads use

    to be, she said.

    Educational programmes implemented

by the task team might also be counted in

as a contributing factor. These programmes

made communities aware of the negative

    factors of open street fires.

Oliver promised a fully detailed report in

January to more precisely explain to resi-

dents what factors lead to this notable de-

    crease.

    Joostenbergvlakte Primary School recently

had a much needed facelift, thanks to volun-

teers of Absas corporate and investment

banking department who gave 230 hours of

    their time in 2015.

The bankers started working on small

projects and fund-raising initiatives to im-

prove the infrastructure of the school, says

    Lindi Hellyer from Absa.

With this R130 000 was raised to revamp

the learners toilet facilities and a structure

was built to cordon off an area for teachers

and visitors. The Community Chest also

made a financial contribution to the project,

    which was completed in 2014.

In 2015, money was raised to paint three

    classrooms for the 125 Joostenbergvlakte

    learners. The main infrastructure project

for 2015 was the roofing structure.

The school does not have an assembly ar-

ea to congregate to have meetings with

learners and educators. All they have is an

open cemented area, exposed to the extreme

weather conditions. A roofing structure has

since been erected to cover the open area

with an additional R240 000 that was raised

for this particular project, she explains.

And in doing so, the adorable 10-week-

    Breeder Alida Delport from Brackenfell

    ffordableHIV counselling and testing

have been made available at iKapa

Cares outlets in the northern sub-

urbs in the wake of World Aids Day on 1

    December.

    The Western Cape Government Health

(WCGH), in partnership with the Essential

Health Group Pharmacy in Kuils River,

Pick n Pay Hypermarket Pharmacy in

Brackenfell and Pick n Pay Plattekloof

Pharmacy in Plattekloof, are expanding its

health service offering to include HIV

Counselling and Testing (HCT), in addition

    to family planning here.

This programme is an initiative be-

tween the provincial government and pri-

vate sector to ensure that the population of

the Western Cape has increased access to

services and awareness in healthcare. The

goal is to avail necessary resources to our

patient pools to ensure better experiences

in receiving vital health care tools, says

Dr Beth Engelbrecht, Head of Department.

HCT is an important service as it is a

vital part in encouraging people to know

their status. The private partners already

render family planning and baby immuni-

sation services onbehalf of the department.

The addition of HCT is integral to ensuring

    accessibility and education awareness so

that people canknow their status, saysEn-

    gelbrecht.

These iKapa Cares outlets have trained

nursing sisters who provide this confiden-

tial service using quality supplies made

    available by the department.

    The test will cost R60.

Engelbrecht says this initiative seeks to

reach out to the ordinary person who can-

not afford private healthcare, but is not in

a position to take a day off work to access

    primary services.

In the private sector people are all about

the instantaneous service. They want to

come in immediately, and they want to be

out immediately. So howmuch time you ac-

tually need to invest when you are talking

to the client would be the biggest thing that

I learnt, says Tercia Ford, an iKapa nurse

    who participated in the training.

Of course your main objective is to pro-

vide a service and also a quality service. A

course like this just improves that, and its

great to be able to not turn anybody away

and to be able to say look there is this ser-

vice. In the private sector there are limita-

tions as to what we are able to provide and

this just enables us to reach more people,

    she says.

Kathy Searle, another nurse who under-

went the training, says: I think that the fu-

ture idea of HIV counselling and testing

coming into the pharmacies, the availabili-

ty for clients and the convenience, is really

exciting. I think its a perfect opportunity

to educate people to make informed deci-

sions and to help them stay healthy. I think

the more people who understand and are

aware of HIV and AIDS and the difference

between the two, how they can stay healthy

and still live a normal life even if they are

    HIV positive, gives people hope.

The service launched on 1 December and

will be rolled out at 18 private partner sites

throughout the Western Cape, with the

hope of expanding that access over the next

    12 months.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Is daar iewers

    tingsbetalersgeld.

Wat die omgewing betref, verloor ons

land water met beurtwater ons voor-

land en verloor renosters steeds hul

horings en lewens teen n ongekende

tempo. Boonop verloor boere in droogte-

    geteisterde gebiede hul oeste.

    In die kommunikasie-omgewing verloor

dag- en Sondagkoerante hul lesers en

Afrikaans moet hard baklei om nie sy

status as hor onderrigtaal te verloor nie.

Met gemiddeld 49 mense wat per dag

in SA vermoor word, het die polisie

lankal sy greep op misdaad verloor.

Op sportterrein gaan dit nie veel beter

nie.

    horison?

een van die vier sangers wat vanjaar

    saammet n simfonie-orkes enmassa-

koor in Klassieke Kersfees gaan optree.

Andr, wat in Johannesburg bly, het die

afgelope paar jaarmin opgetree, dus is Son-

dag 13 Desember n baie spesiale gebeurte-

nis. Hy deel die aand die verhoogmet Kevin

Leo, Jannie Moolman en Corlea Botha.

    Hy het aan die begin

    van die jaar saammet n

    skoolkoor opgetree en

    by die tweede liedjie die

    mense op hul voete ge-

had. Dit is toe dat ons be-

    sluit het hy moet weer

    begin optree, vertel Ju-

ne du Toit, wat Andr se

    bemarking hanteer.

    TygerBurger, een van

    die borge van die kon-

    sert, het vir Andr n

    paar vrae gevra:

    1. Waarmee is jy

    deesdae besig?

    Behalwe vir my vol-

    tydse werk as eienaar

    van n suksesvolle be-

    markingsmaatskappy,

    Andr Schwartz Marke-

ting (wat nie musiekbemarking is nie), en

my besige konserttoerprogram, is ek baie

    opgewonde oor my eie platemaatskappy,

waarmee ek besig is.

    eenvirmishandelde engestremdekinders

en die ander by Animals in Distress vir on-

    versorgde diere.

    2. Dis jou eerste keer by Klassieke Kers-

fees.

    3. Wat is jou mooiste kinderherinne-

    ring van Kersfees?

My pa is oorlede toe ek 13 jaar oud was.

    My herinneringe aanKersfees saammet Pa

    4. Waar gaan jy di Kersfees wees?

Ek het n baie bedrywige Desember, met

my laaste vertoning vanjaar op 20 Desem-

ber. Daarna wil ek terug huis toe om Kers-

fees by familie deur te bring, waarna ekmy-

self gaan bederf met n lekker vakansie in

    die Kaap saam met

    hartsvriende.

    5.Watter planne het

    jy vir volgende jaar?

    Maart/April my nuwe

CD in die mark te h.

    29 FEB 2016

    Dwaalkoel kon noodlottig wees

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    n

    omdat dit so warm was.

Enkele oomblikke later het sy die geweldi-

    ge slag gehoor.

Donaldson was op 24 Oktober tussen 13:00

en 14:00 tuis by hul huis in Valenciastraat

    vlieg.

Eers toe haar man tuiskom, het hy die gat

bo in die muur raakgesien. Met nadere on-

dersoek het hulle eers stukkies sement op

die vloer gekry en toe die koel.

Die koel, waarvan net die voorste punt

gevind is, was so groot soos n AA-batte-

ry. Dit het n gat so groot soos n R5-munt-

stuk in hul dak gelaat.

Ek wil mense hiervan

bewus maak, het sy gemaan. Sy is nou be-

Lt. kol. Marius Swanepoel van die Dur-

banville-polisie, wat die saak ondersoek, het

hierop ges dis blote spekulasie oorwaar die

koel vandaan kom, omdat die koel deur

    enigeen afgevuur kon gewees het.

Die koel is weggestuur vir ballistiese

toetse. Hy het ges die saak word in n baie

    ernstige lig beskou,maardat ballistiese toet-

    Tanya Badenhorst

    (32), n oud-leerder van

    Horskool Stellenberg

    wat aan die Hor Mei-

    sieskool Paarl gematri-

    kuleer het, s sy het

    nooit besef hoeveel

    daar in Durbanville is

    om te doen nie hier

    reg onder my neus.

    Durbanville is n ge-

    sinsvriendelike dorp

    en gemeenskap vir al-

    mal, met winkelsen-

    trums, perderitte, wyn-

    plase en staproetes wat

    wag omontdek teword.

ons as n klomp mammas of n gesin kon

    saamkuier.

eers geniet het, raak n straf eerder as ont-

spanning, s sy. Soos die keer toe sy met

haar maandoue baba Moedersdag in Simon-

stad gaan vier het. Dit was n sonnige dag

en alles het volgens plan verloop. Binne n

My suster het

    nogal voorgestel ek

gaan sit op die toilet en

    voed, wat my glad nie

    aangestaan het nie.

    Die restaurant het

    geen noodhulptoerus-

    ting beskikbaar gehad

    nie enmymamoes hulp

    soek by die naaste ap-

    teek, terwyl my man

    troos en die ander se

    kos koud raak.

    Hoewel dit een van

    ons gunsteling-eetplek-

    ke is, was dit skielik

    duidelik net nie geskik

vir n gesin met ons sa-

    mestelling nie, vertel

    sy. Soos enige entre-

    preneursonderneming

    het ons n probleem ge-

    identifiseer en n oplos-

    sing probeer vind.

    Sy het haar idee met

vriende soos Cecile van der Merwe, Lida

Vlok, Carlien Murray en Nadia Hogan be-

wees. Hiervolgens het ons drie kriteria

saamgestel, naamlik babavriendelik (0 tot 2

jaar), peutervriendelik (3 tot 5 jaar) en kin-

    dervriendelik (6 tot 12 jaar).

Ons het begin met n mammaforum,

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    I

    llegal scrapyards or so-called bucket

shops in Kraaifontein should be shut

down, not merely fined, the ward coun-

    cillor for Wallacedene, Simpiwe Nonkey-

zana, said at a recent sitting of the Bergdal

    subcouncil.

Robberies continue to increase as the il-

legal scrapyard business sector grows, he

    downright stated.

    Nonkeyzana believes the profusion of

bucket shops is in direct relation to the in-

crease in robberies and burglaries .

This trade needs to be stringently regu-

lated. These business owners make good

money and have the means to pay these

fines and then simply carry on with their

    trade, he said.

A recent investigation done by the Citys

metal theft unit revealed four illegal scrap-

yards that currently operate in Kraaifon-

    tein.

This investigation was requested by the

    subcouncil earlier this year.

The report tabled did not reveal the

names of the businesses, but only where

they were situated two in Wallacedene,

one in Bloekombos and one in Scottsville.

During the investigation it was found

that these businesses operated without the

correct license in terms of the land use act.

Three of the businesses were fined R1 000

each. According to the report no stolen

goods were found at any of the premises.

It was further indicated that all these

scrapyards are registered with the South

African Police Service in terms of the Sec-

    ondhand Goods Act.

It was also found they continued opera-

tions in spite of the fines and notices is-

    sued.

    Theunit stated theywould continuewith

integrated operations with all role players,

    specifically land-use inspectors to address

land-use issues with the intent of closing

    down illegal scrapyard businesses.

    Regular visible patrols and inspections

in the vicinity of these scrapyards will be

    conducted.

    Xoliswa Pakela-Mapasa, proportional

representative for the DA in Kraaifontein,

enquired whether it would not be more

prudent to assist such businesses to be-

come legal, instead of continuously fining

    them.

They are making money and are there-

fore not going to stop trading.
